原创
Everyone loves astronauts.Whether actual or fictional, astronauts are seen as the best and
bravest aspects of humankind. So you have to admire the courage of authors Donald Goldsmith and Martin
Rees who argue that,in almost all cases, space exploration is too important to leave to imperfect human
beings. They write,"Robots can go bravely where humans rightly fear to set foot."
In The End of Astronauts:Why Robots Are the Future of Exploration, they challenge the three most
common rationales(全部理由)for putting humans in space.
First is the statement that "humans in space can do more, and more efficiently, than robots can".
The authors devote much of their book to proving it wrong. The second and third rationales have less to do
with efficiency than with "ambition and inspiration".That is,humans must satisfy their urge to explore
new frontiers, and "Humans in space add to our understanding of the space and ourselves.
As scientists, the authors don't have much patience for arguments based on unclear urges. They are cool
to the idea that colonizing (space has much value to humans,at least in the near term. They are more
open to the idea that spaceflight might aid in deepening our understanding of the human species.
While we civilians might be excited at the thought of human footprints on a distant planet,
astronomers care more about getting data they can work with. So,at its heart,The End of Astronauts is an
argument about return on investment:For the cost of a single human journey to Mars, the authors point
out,we could launch dozens of uncrewed missions.
To support their point, the authors remind us of the remarkable discoveries made by robotic missions
to explore the solar system over the past six decades, and they emphasize the risks facing future human
space explorers. In all, their book is a readable and useful contribution to this long-standing debate.

关键词the youngest astronomers
Two high school students have identified four new planets in distant space about 200 light years from
Earth, making them "the youngest astronomers"to make such a discovery.
Kartik Pingle,16,and Jasmine Wright,18,who both attended schools in Massachusetts,
participated in the Student Research Mentoring Program (SRMP).With the help of Tansu Daylan,an
MIT doctor for Astrophysics and Space Research, the students studied and analyzed data from the
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).Together they focused on TESS Object of Interest (TOI)
1233,a nearby, bright sun-like star and here they found four planets rotating ()around the star.
"We were looking to see changes in light over time,"Pingle explained."The idea is that if the planet
transits ()the star,or passes in front of it,it would periodically cover up the star and decrease its
brightness."
While studying 1233,Pingle and Wright had hoped to find at least one planet, but were
overwhelmed with joy when a total of four were found."I was very excited and very shocked,Wright
said."We knew this was the goal of Daylan's research, but to actually find a multi-planetary system,
and be part of the discovering team, was really cool.
Three of the newly discovered planets are considered as "sub-Neptunes",which are gaseous
)but smaller than the Neptune in our solar system. While observing the planets, the team
determined each one completes their orbit around 1233 every 6 to 19.5 days. However, the fourth
planet is labeled a "super-Earth"for its large size and rockiness-this one orbits around the star in just
under four days.
"We have long been studying planets beyond our solar system and with multi-planetary systems, the

two young students are kind of hitting the jackpot. They are really blessed,Daylan said."The planets
originated from the same disk of matter around the same star, but they ended up being different planets
with different atmospheres and different climates due to their different orbits. So,we would like to
understand the fundamental processes of planet formation and evolution using this planetary system.
Daylan added that it was a "win-win"to work with Pingle and Wright on the study."As a
researcher,I really enjoy interacting with young brains that are open to experimentation and learning and
have minimal bias(偏见),”he said.“I also think it is very beneficial to high school students, since
they get exposure to cutting-edge research and this prepares them quickly for a research career."
1.How did the two students identify the four planets?
A.By helping Professor Tansu Daylan with the data.
B.By analyzing the change of brightness of star 1233.
C.By studying Neptune, which exists in our solar system.
D.By interacting with other young talented brains.
2.What can we learn about the discovery?
A.It was independently made by two young students.
B.It was made with a creative approach.
C.It was meant to be made by Tansu Daylan.
D.It turned out that more than one planet was discovered at a time.
3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase "hitting the jackpot"in
paragraph 5?
A.Making a discovery difficultly.
B.Achieving the goal easily.
C.Succeeding in something luckily.
D.Performing a task carefully.
4.According to the article, what benefit does the study bring?
A.It allows scientists to work with young people without prejudice.
B.It equips future astronomers with better research abilities.
C.It provides more viewpoints, thus promoting more discoveries.
D.It arouses students'interest in exploring the unknown universe.

spacesuits
Humans have been exploring the infinite abyss (beyond Earth's atmosphere. When astronauts
explore the vast expanse of outer space, they need to wear high-tech spacesuits to protect them from the
freezing conditions of the universe.
Hollywood movies have idealized the iconic suit, its design leading the masses to believe it's an
outfit that can be slipped on within minutes. In fact, the spacesuit, which is made up of nearly a half
dozen different components and can have up to 16 layers,is its own fully functioning spacecraft that takes

hours to put on and requires help from one's colleagues
The astronauts on the Artemis missions,NASA's next program to send the first woman and the first
person of color to the moon, will wear the latest spacesuit, called the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility
Unit, also known as xEMU,according to NASA.
Each spacesuit has a portable life support system, which includes a water tank for the cooling
garment and a carbon dioxide removal system to regulate body temperature, remove excess heat and
maintain the astronauts'health, said Richard Rhodes, the deputy director for xEMU pressure garment
development at NASA.A two-way radio system is also included so the astronauts can communicate during
the missions.
"When the Apollo astronauts walked on the moon, they couldn't bend over and pick up a rock,"
said NASA astronaut Mike Fincke.Fortunately, spacesuits have come a long way since then and have a
more flexible structure with gloves. The gloves are one of the most complicated parts of the spacesuit, said
Cathleen Lewis, curator (of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum.
"Gloves are very difficult to design to be protective and also allow the manual dexterity (that
astronauts need to do meaningful work,"she noted.
The spacesuits will also be getting some upgrades for the latest lunar mission.Richard Rhodes's team
is working on a spacesuit that will allow for more movement to explore the rough terrain of the moon while
still being strong enough to protect the wearer.
5.What can we learn about the spacesuit in Hollywood movies?
A.It provides the most ideal design.
B.It functions as a spacecraft of its own.
C.It can be put on without too much difficulty.
D.It can protect astronauts from the cold in space.
6.In what aspect does paragraph 4 mainly talk about the latest spacesuit?
A.Its operating methods.
B.Its components.
C.Its existing problems.
D.Its initial aims.
7.Why are the Apollo astronauts mentioned in the passage?
A.To contrast the Apollo spacesuits with the latest one.
B.To give an example of a successful space mission.
C.To demonstrate the failure of the Apollo missions.
D.To criticize the incompetence of the Apollo astronauts.
8.Which of the following best describes NASA's spacesuit for the next lunar mission?
A.High-tech but impractical.
B.Portable and mobile.
C.Costly but well-received.
D.Flexible and protective.

[2023-2024重庆市主城四区高-下期末]Once upon a time,in a small village,there lived a teenager
named Maya.Maya had a dream-to become an astronaut and explore the space. However, many
doubted her dream, considering them unrealistic for someone from their common background.
At school,Maya had to put up with classmates who made fun of her because they thought her dream
was too big and impossible. They laughed at her for spending hours studying astronomy instead of
engaging in more "realistic"activities. She faced doubts not only from her classmates but also from some
members of her own family. They questioned her choices, pushing her to choose a more traditional job
that would provide a good income and a better future.
Maya, not discouraged by the doubts, worked hard in her studies. She ate books on astronomy,
attended science camps, and found help from teachers.Maya's love for space grew stronger with each
passing day, fueling her determination to overcome any difficulties in her path.
As Maya approached her final year of high school,an opportunity arose-a well-known scholarship
that offered a chance to study astrophysics at a famous university.Maya knew that this could be her ticket
to achieving her dream.
The scholarship selection process was strict, testing the related knowledge, skills, and
talent.Maya poured countless hours into preparation, broadening her mind and improving her skills.
When the day of the scholarship interview arrived,Maya faced a group of respected professors and
experts in the field.Nervously, she answered their questions and shared her love for space exploration.
Although the interview was challenging,Maya refused to let self-doubt consume her.Weeks turned into
months as Maya awaited the scholarship results.Doubts and anxieties plagued (her mind, but she
reminded herself of the importance of being strong.
