If, like me, you're a fan of film, then there's no better place to watch something than on the big screen at the cinema. You enter the dark theatre and take your seat, ready to be entertainedW1. But while you are absorbed inP1 some movie magic, many others are now getting their film fixed at home. Over the last few years, cinemas have seen a comeback. Customers have been attracted by comfortable seats, and lots of choice of things to watch. Multiplexes in particular can screen up to twenty films at the same time, suiting all different tastes. In addition, 3D and even 4D movies can give the audience an extra immersive experience. So what's not to like about a trip to the cinema? The coronavirus pandemic has put the future of cinema under the spotlight. Some have had to close because of reduced ticket sales. In the UK, it's brought about a surge in TV watching and online streaming. It's reported that half of UK adults will keep and continue using their new streaming subscriptions. This isn't great news for cinemas. They rely onP2 the releaseW2 of a big blockbuster to bring the crowds back, but the launch of new films, such as James Bond: No Time To Die, are being delayed. Disney has released its $200m blockbuster, Mulan, online instead of in movie theatres. John Fithian, from the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Variety magazine: “This idea of waiting out the pandemic to make your movies more profitable doesn't make sense to me. There won't be as much of an industry left to play your movies in if you do that.” 1.What's mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? D.Delaying the release of blockbusters can bring in more profits. 的观点John Fithian(约翰·菲西安)会同意。 发行;释放 P重点短语 1.be absorbed in 专心于;全神贯注于 2.rely on 依靠 Ⅱ 七选五 Winning an Oscar isn't all about acting ability While the awards claim they recognize the top performances from around the world, a new study has found that you're more likely to win an Oscar if you're an American acting in a film that portrays American culture. __1__ British actors are more likely to take home an award. Researchers say the trend suggests viewers are more likely to perceive a performance as “truly brilliant” if they are members of the same social group as the actor. It can be seen, perhaps most famously, in the case of Leonardo DiCaprio, who finally won a longawaited Oscar in the 88th Academy Awards for his role in The Revenant, which follows the story of an American frontiersman. __2__ In 2014, Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, and Jennifer Lawrence took an award home in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook. __3__ The findings come from a new study published in the British Journal of Psychology. The team investigated a total of 908 merit prize winners: 97 winners and 383 nominees for the Oscars, and 97 winners and 331 nominees for the BAFTAs. Overall, they found that US actors dominated the awards, claiming over 50 percent of the prizes across the Oscars and BAFTAs. __4__ When the performer and judge shared membership within a particular social group—for example, being American—the actor was more likely to win. As a result, American actors were found to win 52 percent of all BAFTAs, and 69 percent of all Oscars. While British actors won just 18 percent of all Oscars, and 34 percent of BAFTAs. __5__ In the Oscars, Americans who performed in films about nonUS culture accounted for just 26 percent of the award winners. But, those who performed in films about American culture made up 88 percent of the winners. A.In recent years, many actors have cast themselves as frontiersmen. B.Subject matter played a role, too, according to the researchers. C.And, the same applies to London's BAFTAs. D.But they also noted a trend within social groups. E.But the trend also stretches back throughout the years. F.Things are different in Britain. G.Daniel DayLewis won an Oscar in 2008 for his role in There Will Be Blood. As is wellknown, some plays in the world are so successful that they run for years on end. In many ways, this is unfortunate for some poor actors who are required to go on repeating the same lines night after night in the play. In fact, people tend to expect them to know their parts by heart and never have cause to falter (结巴) when they are performing on the stage. Yet this is not always the case. A famous actor in a highly successful play was once cast in the role of a nobleman who had been imprisoned in the Bastille for twenty years. In the last act, a gaoler (狱卒) would always come on to the stage with a letter which he would hand to the prisoner. Even though the nobleman was expected to read the letter at each performance, he always insisted that it should be written out in full. One night, the gaoler decided to play a joke on his colleague to find out if, after so many performances, he had managed to learn the contents of the letter by heart. Thus, before the last act, he secretly replaced the letter full of contents with a blank sheet of paper. Then came the last scene. The curtain slowly went up on the final act of the play and revealed the nobleman sitting alone behind bars in his dark cell (牢房). Just then, the gaoler appeared with the precious letter in his hands. He entered the cell and presented the letter to the prisoner without hesitation. But the copy he gave him had not been written out in full as usual. It was simply a blank sheet of paper. The gaoler looked on eagerly, anxious to see whether his fellow actor had at last learnt his lines. Opening the letter, the nobleman amazingly found it totally blank. It was much to the gaoler's surprise that the nobleman would return the letter to him. [精彩范文] Opening the letter, the nobleman amazingly found it totally blank. The nobleman did not know what had gone wrong, but it was too late to change the letter, and he could not ask why. This is the final act, which must bring the whole play to a successful conclusion. After a brief pause, as if he knew something, he calmly handed the letter back to the gaoler. It was much to the gaoler's surprise that the nobleman would return the letter to him. How could he read it without letters? Did he really know his lines by heart? The gaoler, confused, waited to see. The actor who played the nobleman had already memorized the contents of the letter. He knew that someone was going to play a joke on him, so he didn't even need the prop paper to let people know what he was capable of. He played the last scene smoothly as usual.
