There is nothing as enjoyable as having a day out in the fresh air and sunshine, but if you’re not careful, you may get sunburnt. You might be surprised to learn that not only humans get sunburnt. This is a problem for some animals too.
Animals without much hair such as elephants and pigs are most likely to get sunburnt. Luckily, many of these animals have their own ways to protect their skin.
Pigs, for example, like to roll in the mud (在泥里打滚). This isn’t a dirty habit. In fact, the coating of mud keeps them cool in hot weather and protects their skin. Similarly, elephants throw sand on their backs and heads for use as a kind of natural sunblock (防晒霜).
Land animals aren’t alone in having trouble with sunburn. Whales also face this problem. It’s a good thing that blue whales’ cells (细胞) can repair skin damage (皮肤损伤), so they don’t often get skin illness.
