Marilynn Moe, 80, is a resident of the Homestead, a senior-living and care community in Rochester, Minnesota, managed by Mark.
Mark fell for Marilynn’s charm in 2012, the day he came to interview for the job. He was standing in the hallway, hoping he didn’t look as nervous as he felt, when a stylishly dressed woman walked right up to him. “Good morning,” she said. “I’m Marilynn. I hope everything works out for you.” She gave him such a warm smile that he couldn’t help but smile back, nerves forgotten.
He got the job, and it didn’t take long for him to realize what a treasure Marilynn was. She’d arrived herself only two years before, moving from Fargo. It was a huge change. She loved teaching, seeing her students’ skills and confidence grow. Would she find something as fulfilling at the Homestead?
“I could have just sat in my apartment,” she says, “but I wasn’t going to do that.”
Marilynn noticed that most people kept to themselves and didn’t know much about their neighbors, so she started a monthly newcomers’ get-together. One by one they’d go around the circle and share a fun fact about themselves as an icebreaker.
She went to the monthly women’s breakfast. To her disappointment, only three or four others showed up. She took over, each month lining up one of the residents to give a talk about a special interest, trips they’d taken, former careers, even more weighty topics. She personally invited women to attend. It wasn’t long before the room was packed.
She gave out birthday cards, using the Homestead’s monthly newsletter to get the dates. She played the piano for church services and special occasions.
Marilynn didn’t notice anything different about the Homestead, but others did. “These changes you’re making, they’re great,” the residents would tell Mark. “Keep it up.” Mark knew he wasn’t the one who deserved the credit. Marilynn wasn’t trying to become a noticeable figure. She cared deeply about the people around her, doing so naturally and without intending to seek recognition.
4. How did Mark feel after meeting Marilynn in the hallway?
A. Amused. B. Worried. C. Astonished. D. Relieved.
5. What does the underlined word “fulfilling” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Spiritually satisfying. B. Truly comforting.
C. Extremely interesting. D. Incredibly challenging.
6. Why did Marilynn take over organizing the women’s breakfast?
A. To improve its quality. B. To promote healthy eating.
C. To make it more engaging. D. To show her personal power.
7. What can be inferred about Marilynn’s contributions to the community?
A. They go unrecognised by Mark. B. They come from her caring nature.
C. They are used to gain her influence. D. They are far from Mark’s expectation.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

My husband, Haywood, reached retirement age after 37 years of teaching this summer. I am excited to have more time with the person I like best in the world. The only downside was his stuff. What does he do with all the books?
Haywood brought home, all the books, to a house already piled up with the books passed down from our parents after they passed away. Every bookshelf in the house — and there are a lot of bookshelves in this house — was already stuffed beyond moving.
People have been arguing that print is dead, or about to be dead. It is not dead in this house. We write in books. We fold pages and underline passages and draw little stars at the edges of the pages.
Before the objections begin, let me say that I am 100 percent in favor of every kind of reading there is: e-books, audio books, Braille books, graphic books, you name it.
Nevertheless.
I will always prefer a book I can hold in my hand, the kind that smells of paper and glue. The material feel of it pleases me.
For me, a book made of paper will always be a beautiful object that warms a room even as it expands (or entertains, or challenges, or informs, or comforts) a mind, and a bookcase will always represent time itself. I walk past one of our bookcases, and I can tell you exactly why a particular book is still there, never removed as space grew limited.
When I reread a book from my own shelves, I meet my own younger self. I am what I have read far more surely than I am what I have eaten. By looking at our bookshelves, I can tell you who my husband was, too.
Our books ensure that I am still surrounded by all the selves I have ever been, and all the selves my husband has been. I prefer the messy shelves, the folded pages, the notes written in a familiar hand.
8. What can be inferred about the Haywood family?
A. They push reading broadly. B. They show off their books,
C. They should limit their books. D. They have a reading tradition.
9. What is the author’s attitude towards e-books?
A. Supportive. B. Grateful. C. Passionate. D. Curious.
10. Why can paper books warm a room according to the author?
A. They calm people’s mind. B. They hold emotional memories.
C. They decorate the room well. D. They improve the family relation.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. My Books, My Moods B. My Bookshelf, Myself
C. My Tie to My Husband D. My Preference to Print Books
D 9. A 10. B 11. B
根据第二段“Haywood brought home, all the books, to a house already piled up with the books passed down from our parents after they passed away. Every bookshelf in the house — and there are a lot of bookshelves in this house — was already stuffed beyond moving.(海伍德把所有的书都带回家,我们的家里已经堆满了父母去世后留下的书。房子里的每个书架——这个房子里有很多书架——都已经塞得无法移动了)”可知,海伍德家族有阅读的传统。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Before the objections begin, let me say that I am 100 percent in favor of every kind of reading there is: e-books, audio books, Braille books, graphic books, you name it.(在反对开始之前,我想说,我百分之百地支持所有的阅读方式:电子书、有声书、盲文书、图文书,应有尽有)”可知,作者对电子书的态度是支持。故选A。
根据倒数第三段“For me, a book made of paper will always be a beautiful object that warms a room even as it expands (or entertains, or challenges, or informs, or comforts) a mind, and a bookcase will always represent time itself. I walk past one of our bookcases, and I can tell you exactly why a particular book is still there, never removed as space grew limited.(对我来说,一本纸做的书永远是一件美丽的东西,它温暖了一个房间,即使它扩展了(或娱乐,或挑战,或告知,或安慰)一个心灵,书柜永远代表着时间本身。当我走过我们的一个书柜时,我可以确切地告诉你为什么某本书还在那里,因为空间变得有限而从未移走)”可知,纸书可以温暖房间是因为它们拥有情感记忆。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Our books ensure that I am still surrounded by all the selves I have ever been, and all the selves my husband has been. I prefer the messy shelves, the folded pages, the notes written in a familiar hand.(我们的书确保我仍然被我曾经的自己和我丈夫曾经的自己所包围。我更喜欢凌乱的书架,折叠的书页,用熟悉的笔迹写的笔记)”以及本文讲述了作者对纸质书的深厚情感与偏爱。作者丈夫退休后,家中书籍堆积如山,但这并未让作者感到困扰,反而让她倍感亲切,书架上的书籍见证了作者和丈夫的历程,是时间的见证者,因此,作者坚称纸质书在她心中有着不可替代的地位,可知,B选项“我的书架和我自己”最符合文章标题。故选B。

When Sherlock Holmes asked Dr. Watson to consider the previous night’s “curious incident” involving a dog, Watson replied that nothing had happened. “That was the curious incident,” observed Holmes. This clue enabled Holmes to conclude that the murderer must have been someone familiar to the victim’s dog because the dog did not bark when the murderer appeared. Most people would miss this important clue because, like Watson, they pay little attention to non-occurrences.
In everyday life, consumers often make decisions based on brief descriptions of products in advertisements and other one-sided promotional materials. Why are people willing to make decisions based on limited information? People are accustomed to using whatever evidence is readily available to them — however insufficient — at the expense of other information that persuaders fail to mention. Omission neglect (insensitivity to unmentioned options, features, issues, or possibilities) is particularly problematic given the nature of the world. Information describing alternatives — such as job applicants, consumer products, medical procedures, and decision outcomes — varies dramatically across situations. Some alternatives are discussed at considerable length, while others are described only briefly. To some extent, nearly everything is described in terms of limited or incomplete evidence.
Research on omission neglect has shown that people often fail to detect the absence of important missing information, and this leads people to form strong beliefs on the basis of weak evidence. Strong beliefs are beliefs that are overly extreme and held with a high degree of confidence. In general, people should form more extreme beliefs when more rather than less information is available. However, when people are insensitive to omissions, people form extreme beliefs regardless of how little is known about a topic, according to Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion.
The results of research published by Sanbonmatsu suggest that omission neglect occurs because missing information is not very noticeable. To the extent that this is true, omission neglect should be reduced when the importance of missing information is enhanced. More moderate judgments are made when people are sensitive to omissions due to a clear warning that the given information is incomplete, due to very high levels of prior knowledge about the target object or issue, or due to comparison processes that make it painfully obvious that some objects are described by a large amount of information whereas others are described by a small amount.
12. What led Sherlock Holmes to his conclusion?
A Watson’s peculiar reply. B. His observation of the victim.
C. The absence of the dog’s barking. D. The time of the murderer’s appearance.
13. What do people tend to do when making decisions?
A. Analyse the persuaders. B. Gather more information.
C. Assess the influence of the decisions. D. Fail to notice what is unmentioned.
14. What is Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion?
A. More information builds confidence. B. Weak evidence can lead to strong beliefs.
C. Most people like to challenge themselves. D. It is hard to know everything about a topic.
15. What does the last paragraph intend to do?
A. Debate about the truth of information.
B. Warn people against incomplete information.
C. Increase the awareness of missing information.
D. Improve people’s ability to compare information.
C 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据文章第一段“This clue enabled Holmes to conclude that the murderer must have been someone familiar to the victim’s dog because the dog did not bark when the murderer appeared.(这一线索使福尔摩斯得出结论,凶手一定是受害者狗熟悉的人,因为狗在凶手出现时没有吠叫。)”
根据文章第二段“People are accustomed to using whatever evidence is readily available to them — however insufficient — at the expense of other information that persuaders fail to mention.(人们习惯于使用他们容易获得的任何证据——无论多么不充分——而忽略了说服者未提及的其他信息)”可知,人们在决策时往往会忽略未提及的信息。
根据文章第三段“Research on omission neglect has shown that people often fail to detect the absence of important missing information, and this leads people to form strong beliefs on the basis of weak evidence.(关于遗漏忽视的研究表明,人们往往无法察觉到重要信息的缺失,这导致人们基于薄弱的证据形成强烈的信念)”和“However, when people are insensitive to omissions, people form extreme beliefs regardless of how little is known about a topic, according to Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion.(然而,根据Sanbonmatsu的结论,当人们对遗漏不敏感时,人们就会形成极端的信念,而不管对一个话题了解有多少。)”
根据文章第四段“The results of research published by Sanbonmatsu suggest that omission neglect occurs because missing information is not very noticeable. To the extent that this is true, omission neglect should be reduced when the importance of missing information is enhanced. More moderate judgments are made when people are sensitive to omissions due to a clear warning that the given information is incomplete, due to very high levels of prior knowledge about the target object or issue, or due to comparison processes that make it painfully obvious that some objects are described by a large amount of information whereas others are described by a small amount.(Sanbonmatsu发表的研究结果表明,遗漏忽视的发生是因为缺失的信息不是很明显。
Picture this: you’re tramping through the rugged wilderness, surrounded by towering trees and breathtaking views. The sense of adventure is exhilarating, but what happens if you take a wrong turn or find yourself in an emergency? ____16____ It is a small device that is on a satellite network with good coverage across New Iceland. When you go adventures, PLBs can make a difference in ensuring your safety.
Peace of mind
The idea of carrying a PLB provides a significant boost in peace of mind. ____17____ Whether trekking through familiar trails or venturing into uncharted territory, a PLB ensures you’re never truly alone in an emergency. Equip yourself with this essential device and hike with the confidence that help is always within reach.
Reliable connection
Unlike mobile phones, which can lose signal or run out of battery, PLBs are designed to work in the most challenging environments. They operate on dedicated frequencies and have excellent batteries that can last for years without needing a charge. ____18____ A PLB’s signal can penetrate dense forests, deep canyons, and even stormy weather, ensuring your call for help gets through.
____19____
Investing in a PLB doesn’t have to break the bank. Prices for these devices have become more accessible and considering the potential cost of an unplanned search and rescue mission, a PLB is a small price to pay for your safety. ____20____
A PLB is necessary for any serious tramper. Its ability to provide a reliable, lifesaving connection to rescue services, regardless of your location, cannot be overstated.
A. Spot tracker
B. Affordable Safety
C. This reliability is crucial when every second counts.
D. If you can’t afford one, they are readily available for hire as well.
E. This is where a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) becomes an invaluable tool.
F. They use a different network to PLBs and have less coverage and a weaker signal.
G. Knowing you have a direct line to rescue services allows you to explore more confidently.
E 17. G 18. C 19. B 20. D
上文“what happens if you take a wrong turn or find yourself in an emergency?(如果你走错了路或发现自己处于紧急状态会发生什么呢?)”提到一个困境,下文“It is a small device that is on a satellite network with good coverage across New Iceland.(这是一个小型设备,在卫星网络上,覆盖整个新冰岛)”介绍了一种救援设备,空处应是引入这个设备,E项“这就是个人定位信标(PLB)成为宝贵工具的地方”符合语境,下文的“It”指代E项中的“Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)”,故选E。
根据本段小标题“Peace of mind(安心)”和上文“The idea of carrying a PLB provides a significant boost in peace of mind.(携带 PLB的想法可以大大促进内心的平静)”可知,本段主要讲携带这个设备让人安心,G项“知道你有直接的救援服务可以让你更自信地探索”符合本段主旨,故选G。
根据本段小标题“Reliable connection(可靠的连接)”和下文“A PLB’s signal can penetrate dense forests, deep canyons, and even stormy weather, ensuring your call for help gets through.(PLB的信号可以穿透茂密的森林、深谷,甚至是暴风雨天气,确保你的求救信号能够传递出去)”可知,PLB信号连接可靠,下文提到这种可靠的信号连接在紧急情况下的重要性,C项“当每一秒都很重要时,这种可靠性至关重要”符合语境,C项中“when every second counts”呼应下文的“dense forests, deep canyons, and even stormy weather”,故选C。
空处是段落小标题,根据本段中“Investing in a PLB doesn’t have to break the bank. Prices for these devices have become more accessible(投资PLB不一定会让你倾家荡产。这些设备的价格已经变得更容易获得)”可知,本段主要讲PLB价格不贵,B项“负担得起的安全”符合语境,概括本段。故选B。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Prices for these devices have become more accessible and considering the potential cost of an unplanned search and rescue mission, a PLB is a small price to pay for your safety.(这些设备的价格已经变得更容易获得,考虑到意外搜索和救援任务的潜在成本,为了你的安全,PLB是一个很小的代价)”提到PLB价格不贵,D项“如果你负担不起,它们也很容易被租用”承接上文,也是关于其价格,故选D。

Cookies for Forgiveness
Last week, a U-Haul truck pulled up across the street, and a college student unloaded a Ping-Pong table onto his front lawn. To most, it might seem harmless, but to me, it was a trigger. In my town, a Ping-Pong table on a lawn isn’t just for games — it’s a beer-pong table, a symbol of late-night noise and chaos. Years ago, my husband and I lived near the university, surrounded by students who turned beer pong into a lifestyle. The thumping bass and laughter kept us awake night after night. We eventually moved to a quieter neighborhood, at great expense, to escape it.
So, when I saw that table, memories of those sleepless nights flooded back. Anger bubbled up inside me, hot and uncontrollable. I marched over, past the table, and knocked on the student’s door. I demanded he remove it, expecting him to apologize. Instead, he met my rage with defiance. “Who are you to tell me what to do?” he shot back. His words only fueled my fury. I yelled things I didn’t mean, my voice sharp with profanity (脏话). My husband, sensing trouble, pulled me away before things escalated further.
The rest of the day, I seethed But by morning, shame replaced anger. I shuddered as I replayed the confrontation in my mind. Why couldn’t I keep my cool? Why did I let something so trivial ignite me? I’ve always struggled with anger — it runs in my family — but I’ve worked hard to change. Therapy, meditation, journaling—I’ve tried them all. Yet, there I was, yelling at a stranger over a Ping-Pong table. I knew I had to make it right.
I turned to what I do best: baking. I pulled out a batch of frozen peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie dough I’d made weeks earlier. The dough balls were my secret weapon, ready to transform into warm, comforting cookies at a moment’s notice. As the cookies baked, the house filled with their sweet, buttery aroma. I let them cool, then arranged them on a plate, my hands trembling.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150词左右;
I walked across the street, past the offending table, and knocked on the student’s door.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I walked across the street, past the offending table, and knocked on the student’s door. When he opened the door, surprise flickered across his face. I forced a smile and held out the plate of cookies. “I’m really sorry about yesterday,” I said, my voice trembling slightly. “I overreacted, and I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that. These cookies are a peace offering.” He stared at me for a moment, then his expression softened. “I guess I could have been nicer too,” he replied. He took a cookie and took a bite. “These are great,” he said, a small smile tugging at his lips.
As I walked home, I felt lighter, as if a weight had been lifted. I was proud of myself for facing my anger and making amends. I realized that holding onto anger only hurts myself in the end. This experience was a reminder that I still have work to do on managing my emotions, but I’m making progress. I looked back at the house across the street and smiled. The Ping-Pong table no longer seemed like a threat. Instead, it was a symbol of a fresh start and the power of forgiveness.

A Spiritually satisfying.
