A voice reaches us, crying out from the depths of a silence: “I am alive, I can think, and no one has the right to deny me these two realities.”
The words were conveyed by a flicker (跳动) of the left eyelid. It came frons a book, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by a former journalist, Jean-Dominique Bauby. He worked for journals like the Quotidien de Paris and Paris Match. For four years until December 1995 he was the very successful chief editor of Elle.
Then the unthinkable happened. A cardiovascular (心血管的) accident sent him into a deep coma (昏迷). His brain remained undamaged, but its connection to his body left him with only the ability to blink his left eyelid. The poor man was found to be suffering from the rare disease “Locked-in Syndrome”. unable to breathe or eat without assistance.
In this body, however, his brain was working wildly, trying to make people understand what he was thinking. With the help of a specialized nurse, Claude Mendibil, he was able to write his book, using only his ability to blink at the most frequently used letters.
He would spend most of the night editing his thoughts and composing sentences. It took him about 200,000 blinks to write his book of more than 100 pages. In it, Bauby describes his paralyzed (瘫痪的) existence as being trapped in an old-fashioned deep-sea diving bell while the “butterflies” of his mind fly freely.
One would expect from this process formal factual report, but that is not the case. The book reads in flowing images that light up his dilemma. The style is clear and fresh, and not without elegance, imagination and humor.
He is also in search of past time, of memory itself, of the books he had read, the poems he had learnt by heart. Even sadder, he thinks of all the books he wanted to read and hadn’t gotten to. He has to listen to someone else reading them to him. He recalls meals, a horse race, his life and work as an editor, and his struggle in his hospital bed to twitch (抽动) his nose when a fly lands on it.
“From this hell comes a great message of life and hope,” said Antoine Audouard. a friend of Bauby’s and the book’s publisher.

Dolphins love to play around, doing things like surfing, playing with stuff, and running after each other. However, have you ever been to a wildlife park and seen dolphins opening their mouths wide? Researchers uncovered that dolphins use the “open mouth” facial expression to show their cheerfulness, instead of attack.
Other animals use their faces to show they want to play, but it wasn’t known if sea creatures do the same thing. This led the team to carry out this study. They recorded videos of 22 dolphins that lived at two wildlife parks. The dolphins were recorded when they were playing in pairs, playing with their human trainers and playing on their own.
During the 80 hours of video footage, the scientists counted 1,288 times when the dolphins used the “smile” expression. The team said 92% of those happened when dolphins were playing with each other. They seldom used the expression when they were playing on their own or with humans. Nearly 90% of the expressions happened when a dolphin could see their playmate’s face. If other dolphins spotted their “smile”, they returned the expression around a third of the time. Elisabetta Palagi, a biologist, said that the relaxed open mouth “is a universal sign of playfulness, helping animals and us signal fun and avoid misunderstanding”.
The research focused on dolphins in parks. Those living in the wild could behave differently when playing. It’s possible that while playing in more open spaces, dolphins might prefer to communicate using sounds instead of facial expressions. “Future research should study eye-tracking to explore how dolphins see their world and take advantage of acoustic signals (声学信号) in their communication during play,” added Livio Favaro, a co-author and zoologist, in the press.
This research throws light on the unique communication skills used by these intelligent sea creatures as well as the importance of facial expressions to set the right intentions (意图).
8. What does an “open mouth” in dolphins indicate according to the researchers?
A. A sign of attack. B. A desire to bite.
C. An expression of joy. D. An intention to escape.
9. What research method did the researchers use?
A. Making a comparison. B. Analyzing cause and effect.
C. Doing experiments in labs. D. Reviewing previous studies.
10. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Dolphins in different areas behave similarly.
B. Future research would include wild dolphins.
C. Eye-tracking was widely used in this research.
D. Dolphins prefer to use sounds to communicate.
11. What is the most suitable title of this passage?
A. Dolphins in Parks “Smile” More.
B. Dolphins “Smile” While Playing.
C. Dolphins Copy Each Other to Smile.
D. Dolphins Behave Better When Alone.

The rapid development of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) has been influencing education at all levels, from primary and secondary to higher education.
Countries around the world are trying to find ways to use AI more flexibly in education, so as to provide education for students in faraway areas and teach people the skills needed to get successful jobs in the 21st century. China has become a leader in the application of AI in education and training by developing smart learning systems and stepping up research on AI.
An important area of research is the possible use of AI to promote language learning. AI can help teachers to tailor resources for learners, producing their specific resources according to individual learners’ needs and improve students’ performance. Researchers from Beijing Normal University explored how an automatic resource generation system can help in teaching Chinese as a second language in schools.
The researchers developed a model to use AI to ensure the resources meet learners’ needs, with studies showing the use of the teaching-learning model improved students’ performance. Students who were taught lessons using the model more actively participated in the course.
In addition to teaching languages, AI can also be used to help students of all ages to learn about different cultures. Researchers from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and some other foreign universities have been exploring ways to use AI to help students from different countries learn from each other and know about each other’s cultures while sitting in the comfort of their homes.
With the development of machine learning, AI has the potential to change education if designed and applied properly. AI applications should be designed in a way that they benefit learners and educators. For that purpose, rules for learners, teachers and other staff in educational organizations should be in place.
12. Why are countries exploring the use of AI in education?
A. To become a leader in the world.
B. To prepare people for future jobs.
C. To develop smart learning system.
D. To advance the use of AI in research.
13. What does the underlined word “tailor” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Apply widely. B. Buy cheaply.
C. Process carefully. D. Design specially.
14. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Making proper rules. B. Inventing smart systems.
C. Conducting more researches. D. Learning different cultures.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rapid development of AI.
B. AI application in language teaching.
C. Possible uses of AI in education.
D. The development of machine learning.

Benjy and I were working in the yard together one afternoon. It was during a summer between college terms, a time of uncertainty for my son. Benjy wanted to follow in my footsteps as a musician, but he was impatient for success. Talented as he was, often he took up one thing and his passion faded. I ached for him and wished I could say something.
Taking a break, Benjy looked around our 15 acres with its stream, its trees, and its rolling grass. “This place is beautiful,” he said. “How did you get it?”
I had long expected Benjy to ask about this, so I told him the story of the land.
Gloria and I were teaching in a town where I had grown up. We wanted land so we could build a house to welcome our first baby. I noticed a parcel south of town where cattle grazed (吃草). It belonged to a 92-year-old retired banker named Mr. Yule, who owned a lot of land in the area, but was selling none of it. He gave the same speech to everyone who inquired. “I promised the farmers they could use it for their cattle.”
Nevertheless, despite being turned down so many times, Gloria and I persisted in visiting him at the bank, where he still spent his days. Then one day, after we claimed our names and intention, Mr. Yule looked up from his paper, pursed his lips and stared. “Gaither. Bill Gaither. Are you any relation to Grover Gaither?”
“Yes, sir. He was my granddad.”
Mr. Yule put down his paper and removed his glasses. Then he pointed to a couple of chairs, and we sat down.
“Grover Gaither was the best worker I ever had on my farm, patient and persistent in everything,” he said. “Showed up early, stayed late, did whatever needed doing and never had to be told.” Mr. Yule squinted, his eyes distant with the memory. “What’d you say you wanted, Gaither?”
I told him again.
“Let me do some thinking on it, then come back and see me.”

空格处指代“全世界苎麻的产量”,结合上文“The ramie output in China”可知,空格处为同类异物特指,且output不可数,应用that,相当于the output (of the world)。故填that。
故填are place。
engaged in“从事于……” 故填in。

故填the。
根据空格前的has carried out many可知,空格处应该用复数名词innovations作宾语。

“Grover Gaither was the best worker I ever had on my farm patient and persistent in everything,” he said. “Showed up early, stayed late, did whatever needed doing and never had to be told.” Mr. Yule squinted, his eyes distant with the memory. “What’d you say you wanted, Gaither?”
I told him again.
“Let me do some thinking on it, then come back and see me.”

Para 2: I nodded at Benjy, “Yes, patience and persistence really matter.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 1: We were in his office again within a week. To our surprise, Mr. Yule greeted us warmly and informed us of his decision. “I’ve thought about it, Gaither. I’ll sell you that parcel of land,” he said with a firm voice, handing us the terms of the sale. The price was unexpectedly reasonable, and we were overjoyed. Before we could thank him, Mr. Yule added, “Your granddad taught me that good things come to those who are patient and persistent. I see the same quality in you.” With hard work and determination, we eventually built our home on that land, which marked the beginning of countless cherished memories.
Para 2: I nodded at Benjy, “Yes, patience and persistence really matter.” Benjy looked thoughtful as he processed my words. “So, it’s not just about talent, but also about sticking to something and working hard for it?” he asked. I smiled, sensing a breakthrough. “Exactly, son. Success doesn’t come overnight. It’s about staying dedicated even when things get tough.” That afternoon, we kept working silently in the yard, but I could sense a shift in Benjy’s attitude. Later that evening, he played his guitar with renewed passion, as if he had rediscovered his purpose and the value of perseverance.
