The original structure only had books on the lower level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling was raised to accommodate even more books. A. They house the rarest books. B. They were unusually designed. C. They were expanded as needed. D. They overlook surrounding buildings. B In the digital age, opportunities are arising for everyone. However, only those putting plans into action can stay ahead. Alexandr Wang is one such example. Los Alamos National Laboratory was where Alexandr spent his childhood. Both his parents were physicists there. Alexandr, from a young age, had a sharp mind. As a kid, he was regarded as a math wizard (奇才) and competed in national math and computer competitions. Finishing high school, Alexandr entered MIT (麻省理工学院) where machine learning and AI amazed him. He saw the potential (潜力) of AI, and was excited about how it could change the world. But it wasn’t making a real impact. His ambition to set up a company in that field was seeded then. At 17, he got the role of tech lead at Quora and dropped out of MIT. “I told my parents it was just going to be a thing I did for the summer. Obviously, it wasn’t,” Alexandr said. Surely, his parents were disappointed. They all knew he made that change filled with unexpected risks. But Alexandr said, “If you aren’t willing to take a risk now, then when?” Alexandr met Lucy Guo at Quora, with whom Alexandr founded Scale AI, which turned out to be a considerable success. In fact, at that time, there were various opportunities in the tech world. It was hard to decide which road they should go down. Then he and his team decided to take a different approach — instead of following diverse paths, they agreed to focus on one. They went with “imagery, computer vision and other kinds of sensor data”. And that is what made the company’s profits rise quickly. Scale AI has a net worth of about $7.3 billion at present, with Alexandr being the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. When asked lessons he’d like to share with founders, Alexandr stated there are a number of things. “The top one is always doing things that go with your values and how you want to build a company at the beginning. When you talk to investors (投资者), they’ll contribute advice that may go against your goal. Figure out your focus and what gets you started.” 4. What inspired Alexandr to build Scale AI? A. The work at Quora. B. His experiences at university. C. The influence of his parents. D. His talent for math and computer. 5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4? A. The key to the success of Scale AI. B. Challenges of Alexandr’s career. C. Alexandr’s great achievements. D. The process of founding Scale AI. 6. Which of the following can best describe Alexandr? A. Clever and generous. B. Courageous and outgoing. C. Ambitious and sociable. D. Adventurous and determined. 7. What did Alexandr advise founders to do? A. Stick to one particular direction. B. Keep an open mind on suggestions. C. Remain true to the original intention. D. Find a friend to start a company. C Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people. According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere. There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster. When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often. This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life. 8. Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe”? A. Practice. B. Provide. C. Suggest. D. Explore. 9. What is the function of paragraph 2? A. To clarify a concept. B. To lead in the topic. C. To make a conclusion. D. To provide evidence. 10. How does nature help people according to the two major theories? A. Refresh oneself. B. Live a better life. C. Improve urban environments. D. Deal with stressful issues. 11. What can be inferred according to paragraph 4? A. It is not easy to get in nature. B. Nature treatment is still unpopular. C. Most patients prefer nature treatment. D. Doctors usually recommend nature to patients. D People hate mosquitoes due to their blood-sucking tendencies. Scientists too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been researching ways to keep them away. A team of researchers from Virginia Tech in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors attract mosquitoes. After analyzing the mosquitoes’ behavior, the researchers discovered several chemicals in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”. Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and the other with the scent (气味) of flowers, can keep the insects away. The team also found that what matters to mosquitoes is not just the chemicals, but rather the combination of chemicals with each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel (驱除) mosquitoes by using another kind of soap. The findings were “remarkable”, said senior author Clement Vinauger in a news release, adding that he would choose a coconut-scented soap to keep mosquitoes away How these insects manage to find humans has also made scientists curious. According to a new study published in Current Biology, researchers built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans. The pads were heated to imitate sleeping humans. They found that the insects can track scents up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid, which is usually produced by bacteria on human skin. The smell of one participant wasn’t attractive to the insects, and researchers believed it was due to the person’s diet, which is a mainly plant-based food. By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent (驱蚊剂) With more studies, scientists believe changing a person’s diet could one day make them “mosquito-proof”. This is especially beneficial for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria, CNN reported. 12. What did the researchers from Virginia Tech try to find out? A. What soap scents can help avoid mosquitoes. B. How many soap flavors attract mosquitoes. C. Why mosquitoes prefer certain soap flavors. D. What kind of people attracts mosquitoes most. 13. How did researchers study mosquitoes’ ability to track humans? A. By making volunteers fall asleep. B. By heating pads with human scents. C. By watching mosquitoes in the natural world. D. By building a canteen shared with mosquitoes. 14. Which of the following may attract mosquitoes most? A. The scent of flowers. B. Combination of different smells. C. A person with a plant-based diet. D. Carboxylic acid 15 What is the best title of the passage? A. How to Kill Mosquitoes? B. What Kind of Soap Is Most Useful? C. Using Soap Is of Great Significance D. Soap Science Beats away Bug Bites How to Make Your Online Shopping Safer? There’s every reason in the world to shop online. 【答案】4 B 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段中“Finishing high school, Alexandr entered MIT (麻省理工学院) where machine learning and AI amazed him. He saw the potential (潜力) of AI, and was excited about how it could change the world. But it wasn’t making a real impact. His ambition to set up a company in that field was seeded then. (高中毕业后,Alexandr进入了麻省理工学院,在那里,机器学习和人工智能让他感到惊叹。他看到了人工智能的潜力,并对其如何改变世界感到兴奋。然而,它并没有产生真正的影响。那时,他萌生了在这一领域创办公司的雄心)”可知,Alexandr在大学的经历激发了他创立Scale AI的灵感。故选B项。 【5题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段中“In fact, at that time, there were various opportunities in the tech world. It was hard to decide which road they should go down. Then he and his team decided to take a different approach — instead of following diverse paths, they agreed to focus on one. They went with “imagery, computer vision and other kinds of sensor data”. And that is what made the company’s profits rise quickly. (事实上,当时科技界有各种各样的机会,很难决定他们应该走哪条路。后来,他和团队决定采取一种不同的方法——不再分散精力,而是同意专注于一个领域。他们选择了“图像、计算机视觉和其他类型的传感器数据”。正是这一策略使公司的利润迅速增长)”可知,本段主要介绍了专注于一个领域是Scale AI成功的关键。故选A项。 根据第三段中“At 17, he got the role of tech lead at Quora and dropped out of MIT. “I told my parents it was just going to be a thing I did for the summer. Obviously, it wasn’t,” Alexandr said. Surely, his parents were disappointed. They all knew he made that change filled with unexpected risks. But Alexandr said, “If you aren’t willing to take a risk now, then when?” 根据最后一段中Alexandr所说的话“The top one is always doing things that go with your values and how you want to build a company at the beginning. When you talk to investors (投资者), they’ll contribute advice that may go against your goal. Figure out your focus and what gets you started. (最重要的一点是,始终要做与你的价值观相符的事情,以及你最初想要如何建立公司。当你与投资者交流时,他们可能会提出一些与你的目标相悖的建议。明确你的重点以及是什么让你开始的)”可知,Alexandr强调了要始终遵循自己的价值观和初衷。由此可知,他建议创始人要坚持初心。故选C项。 C Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. C 9. D 10. A 11. 根据文章第二段“According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. (根据国际应用心理学协会的说法,更低的压力,更好的情绪,更好的大脑活动,甚至快乐都可以与花时间在户外有关。)”以及划线单词所在句子的主谓部分“That’s why(这是……的原因)”可知,前一句中所说的减轻压力与在户外有关系,与后一句有因果关系,因为自然疗法对身体有好处,因此很多项目才会建议把自然作为潜在的治疗方法。A.practice练习;B.provide提供;C.suggest建议;D.explore探讨。 根据文章第一段“Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people. (科学家估计地球上有数百万棵树。我不敢相信这些树能对人有治疗作用。)”引出话题。第二段“According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere. 根据文章第三段“The first one is called attention restoration theory. (第一个是注意力恢复理论。)”以及“The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. (第二个主要理论叫做压力减少理论。)”可知,大自然疗法主要采取的方式是减少压力,是人体基本认知恢复。A项“Refresh oneself.(清醒头脑)”符合题意,故选A项。 根据文章第四段“When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often. D People hate mosquitoes due to their blood-sucking tendencies. Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been researching ways to keep them away. D. Carboxylic acid 15. What is the best title of the passage? A. How to Kill Mosquitoes? B. What Kind of Soap Is Most Useful? C. Using Soap Is of Great Significance D.
