Which is better? Must I have a British teacher if I wish to learn British English? Yours truly, Manuel Gonzales Paris The editor’s reply: English is a global language with many varieties. American and British English are the two main varieties. Each has many accents: the English of a Bostonian, for example, sounds very different from that of a Texan. The major differences between American and British English are essentially differences of accent, inflection (词尾变化), spelling and, above all, vocabulary. Variations in tense usage exist but are not a big problem for learners of English. Some people claim that British English is superior to American English but really it is a matter of one’s own preference and needs as to which variety is learnt. So, “useful” is probably a more appropriate word than “better”. If you need to use English only with British people (for example, if you are going to live in the United Kingdom), then it will probably be a good idea to have at least one British teacher on your program. However, in a lot of cases, learners of English as a foreign language need to use it to communicate with native speakers from all over the world. Many will need to speak English with other non-native speakers (for example, a Swede with an Italian). In such cases, it doesn’t matter whether your teacher is American or British. In addition, there are excellent teaching books, audio and video cassettes, devoted to either British or American English. Your teacher will be able to choose from these in order to provide you with relevant listening comprehension work and vocabulary input. 41. It can be inferred from this text that Manuel Gonzales _________. A. has attended a language course B. is a non-native English speaker C. has found a good British teacher D. prefers American English to British English 42. Which of the following differences between American and British English is NOT difficult for learners? A. Accent. B. Spelling. C. Vocabulary. D. Tense usage. 43. Which of the following cases is an example of underlined “such cases”? A. A Greek and a German talk in English. B. A Swede lives in the United Kingdom. C. A person learns English as a foreign language. D. A learner has access to teaching audio and video cassettes. 44. The editor thinks that having a British teacher is _________. A. quite practical B. fairly necessary C not essentially useless D. not particularly important 45. The editor develops the reply mainly by _________. A. making comparisons B. providing examples C. following the order of importance D. following the order of Manuel’s questions C The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is looking for those who are forward-thinking, active and from all ages or backgrounds to contribute to our children’s home in Thailand, as part of our Work-Study Volunteer Program. For your international tasks you will be assigned to teams made up of volunteers in all centers, and work on administrative (行政的) tasks for not just the centre you are staying in, but the whole organization. This is a great opportunity to experience the overall management of an international organization. If you are interested in these tasks, contact us about our tourist program. Fluent written and spoken English is required for all our programs. Your minimum stay is 4 weeks. Your cost is $55 — $75 per week. Basic food and accommodation are included and cost decreases for longer stays. 46. In the author’s opinion, each IHF centre has to _________. A. work while respecting the local custom B. improve the people’s living standards C. develop the science and technology D. give all the local children free education 47. Which of the following will be required for a volunteer in IHF? A. Similar work experience. B. Excellent English skills. C. Good teaching skills. D. At least four months’ stay in Thailand. 48. How much does a volunteer have to pay at least? A. 55 dollars. B. 220 dollars. C. 300 dollars. D. 880 dollars. 49. What can we learn from this passage? A. Those who are above 60 can’t be volunteers. B. A volunteer has to pay for his accommodation. C. A volunteer doesn’t need to pay if he stays longer. D. A volunteer can serve in one program for only three weeks. 50. This text is mainly written for those who ________. A. are interested in volunteer work B. want to earn enough money C. like to do management work D. want to go sightseeing in Thailand D I read somewhere that we spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the issue, let’s take a look at three types of “waits”. The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink(洗碗池) as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless. A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup required a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes.”I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience. Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen. Turning one’s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn’t come to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody. We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy. 51. While doing a Watched-Pot Wait, we tend to ___________. A. keep ourselves busy B. get absent-minded C. grow anxious D. stay focused 52. What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched-Pot Wait?\ A. The Forced Wait requires some self-control. B. The Forced Wait makes people passive. C. The Watched-Pot Wait needs directions. D. The Watched-Pot Wait engages body and brain. 53. What can we learn about the Lucky-Break Wait? A. It is less voluntary than the Forced Wait. B. It doesn’t always bring the desired result. C. It is more fruitful than the Forced Wait. D. It doesn’t give people faith and hope. 54. What does the author advise us to do the next time we are waiting? A. Take it seriously. B. Don’t rely on others. C. Do something else. D. Don’t lose heart. 55. The author supports his view by _________. A. exploring various causes of “waits”. B. describing detailed processes of “waits”. C. analyzing different categories of “waits” D. revealing frustrating consequences of “waits” 第二部分:非选择题部分(共35分) 一、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 In October 2020, two friends and I started our gap year in Laos. We went across to Laos for cooking lessons, and it was there that I went into a middle school and helped with English lessons. Volunteering had always been put off by the idea of having to pay a company to work for nothing, but this one was free. We moved onto Vietnam, and began to nonstop shopping, which usually we girls like. But I just wasn’t feeling it. I preferred doing something “better”, which I wanted to do. So. I left my friends and went ahead to Cambodia. The day I arrived at an HIV orphanage (孤儿院) called House of Family, and I volunteered there before. I asked the doctor what happened to all the other orphans—there were only 30 kids at the orphanage but the popularity of HIV/ AIDS in Cambodia is among the highest in Asia. She explained that they were living at the rubbish dumps, so I went there. I discovered children eating badly, sleeping on dirt and walking barefoot on burning poisonous waste. It was inhumane (不人道的) and unacceptable. So I came back to England, borrowed a video camera, raised £1,000 on Facebook and returned two weeks later to do the first Small Steps project. I gave boots, clothes aid, food and water to the children. Then I came home, edited the film, screened it and got an amazing reaction from the public. I registered Small Steps as a charity and intended to repeat the project—called Around the World in 80 Dumps — on inhabited dumps around the world, to create awareness and help people. I am now the director of Small Steps, and the next project is in Nicaragua. In the process of doing charity, I also realize that many of the people whom I have met as a volunteer are an unforgettable part of my life. Perhaps I received far more than I ever gave. 56. I would like to know whether to learn British or American English. A. quite practical B. fairly necessary C. not essentially useless D. not particularly important 45. The editor develops the reply mainly by _________. A. making comparisons B. providing examples C. following the order of importance D. following the order of Manuel’s questions 【答案】41. B 42. D 43. A 44. D 45. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇应用文。这篇文章是一封读者来信和编辑的回复。读者询问关于学习英语的问题,编辑则在回复中提供了详细的建议和解释。 【41题详解】 推理判断题。根据Manuel Gonzales的来信中的句子“I am planning to attend a language course in order to improve my English.(我打算参加一个语言班来提高我的英语水平。)”和最后的落款“Manuel Gonzales, Paris(Manuel Gonzales,巴黎)”可以推断出,Manuel Gonzales是一个非英语母语者。故选B项。 【42题详解】 细节理解题。根据回信中第二段的句子“Variations in tense usage exist but are not a big problem for learners of English.(时态用法的变化是存在的,但对英语学习者来说不是什么大问题。)”可知,时态用法的差异对学习者来说不难。故选D项。 【43题详解】 推理判断题。根据回信中最后一段中划线部分上文“However, in a lot of cases, learners of English as a foreign language need to use it to communicate with native speakers from all over the world. In such cases, it doesn’t matter whether your teacher is American or British.(然而,在很多情况下,英语作为外语学习者需要用它来与来自世界各地的母语人士交流。许多人将需要与其他非母语人士(例如,瑞典人与意大利人)说英语。在这种情况下,你的老师是美国人还是英国人并不重要。)”可知,“such cases”指的是非母语者之间用英语交流的情况。选项A(一个希腊人和一个德国人用英语交谈)符合这一描述。选项 B(一个瑞典人住在英国)和选项C(一个人把英语作为外语来学习)不符合“such cases”的情况。选项D(学习者可以使用教学音频和视频磁带)与“such cases”无关。 故选A项。 【44题详解】 推理判断题。根据回信中最后一段中“However, in a lot of cases, learners of English as a foreign language need to use it to communicate with native speakers from all over the world. Many will need to speak English with other non-native speakers (for example, a Swede with an Italian). In such cases, it doesn’t matter whether your teacher is American or British.(然而,在很多情况下,英语作为外语的学习者需要用它来与来自世界各地的母语人士交流。 C The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is looking for those who are forward-thinking, active and from all ages or backgrounds to contribute to our children’s home in Thailand, as part of our Work-Study Volunteer Program. C. analyzing different categories of “waits” D. revealing frustrating consequences of “waits” 【答案】51. B 52. A 53. B 54. D 55. C 【解析】 【分析】本文属于说明文阅读,作者通过这篇文章主要向我们描述了等待分为三种,我们不应该在等待时失去信心 【51题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段的句子During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. 可知,在等待的过程中,大脑从身体中溜走,四处游荡,直到水从柜台边缘流到你的袜子上。所以我们在等待一壶水煮开的时候我们总是心不在焉的。故选B。 【52题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段After all,Forced Waiting requires patience可知强迫等待需要耐心。所以强迫等待需与被监视的等待的区别是强迫等待需要自控。故选A。 【53题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段的句子waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.可知等待你的好运不一定意味着就会发生,即e Lucky-Break Wait不一定带来渴望的结果 。故选B。 【54题详解】 细节理解题。根据第最后一段中The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don’t be desperate.可知,下次站在水槽边煮面时,一定不要灰心。所以作者建议我们下一次等待的时候,我们不要绝望,不要灰心。故选D。 【55题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段To understand the issue, let's take a look at three types of“waits”.可知,为了理解这个问题,让我们看看三种类型的“等待”。所以判断出作者是通过分析不同种类的等待来支持自己的观点的。故选C。 第二部分:非选择题部分(共35分) 一、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 In October 2020, two friends and I started our gap year in Laos. 56.
