11
With the detox now finished, they’ve switched on⑥ their devices and they’re back online.I bet⑦ you’re as eager as I am to find out just how many have been motivated⑧ enough to last⑨ the full seven days! And what,if anything, has been learnt from the experience?
12
bet后跟的是省略了that的宾语从句;其中“as eager as I am”属于“as...as...” 一样……”;find out后的how many引导宾语从句。
switch/swItʃ/v.(用开关)改变,转换
▶I bet he will win.
14
⑧motivate/ˈməʊtIveIt/vt.
motivate sb.to do sth.
motivated adj.
▶He won’t last long in that job.

I lasted two days. The detox was more difficult to tolerate⑩ than I had expected. I felt like I had lost an arm! Not eating for two days would have been easier! But on reflection⑪,I can see how much of my time had been occupied with⑫ checking my phone. I’m now trying to spend less time online and more time picking up my hobbies.
17
主句是“主语+be+adj.(+for sb.)+to do”句型,tolerate与主语the detox之间是逻辑上的动宾关系。
18
⑩tolerate vt.
[同义]put up with/stand/bear
⑫be occupied with...

I lasted four days.On Monday,my classmate and I spoke about what we did at the weekend—it felt really strange not to already know what he had done. We would usually have posted pictures and updated our profiles⑬. Doing the detox meant we had to talk and
explain what we were doing and thinking! It made me realise the value of real contact that I had forgotten.
21
it是形式主语,真正的主语是not to already know what he had done,其中what引导宾语从句。
此处可以理解为省略了从句if we hadn’t taken part in the campaign。

I managed the whole week! At first, I really felt I was missing out⑭.Then, instead of messaging my friend, I went round to⑮ her house.Without our phones,we had a proper⑯ conversation for over two hours, without being distracted⑰ by messages from other people. It felt so good! Then I decided to visit a different friend every day.By the fifth day,I wondered—was I really missing out by not constantly⑱ checking my phone to see what everyone else was up to⑲ ?
▶Prepare food in advance to ensure you won’t miss out on the fun!

I did all seven days, too! To be honest⑳, I didn’t find the detox too difficult, but I did give my phone to my dad to avoid
giving in! My brother thought I should make full use of the time
without my phone, so he took me to check out㉑ our local sports
centre. An hour’s sport each day left me tired out㉒ and wanting to go
to bed early . The detox made me healthier!
29
30
⑳to be honest老实说,说实话
㉒(be) tired out 疲惫不堪
[同义](be) worn out/(be) exhausted

33
34
㉓be embarrassed to do sth.
㉔throw in the towel认输
towel/ˈtaʊəl/n.[C]毛巾

Today, with most of us owning a smartphone that allows us to post pictures or videos on social media wherever and whenever we want, oversharing has become unprecedentedly harder to avoid. But the tricky thing is that people are unaware that they’re oversharing. It can only be triggered (引起) by their friends and family. A survey shows that every two in three people in the US think their friends share too much on social media.
Oversharing can have negative influences. For instance, it can put your personal information at risk. When you update your status, or simply recall an experience on social networking sites, chances are that you are divulging critical personal information.
According to a Canadian survey, 45% of people aged 18-34 “overshare” their financial information online. “Young people share payment card information via e-mail, loan out their cards, and don’t keep their PIN confidential,” said a reporter. This behavior mirrors similar habits of sharing personal information on social media sites. They’re really not totally aware of who has access to this information and who else can be seeing this information and what could be done with it.
“Oversharing contributes to a larger culture in which such behavior is considered appropriate or even desirable,” said Seidman, associate professor at Albright College in the US. Elizabeth Bernstein, a US-based educator, said, “The constant increase of oversharing is partially connected with the wild use of social media as a subconscious (下意识的) attempt to control anxiety. We actually use a lot of mental energy to try to manage other persons’ impressions of us by oversharing.”
Moreover, oversharing online can damage effective communication in real life. “Having such easy access to so many people makes communication superficial (肤浅的),”said Chen,a psychologist at South China Normal University. “In the end, the lack of deep communication hurts strong social bonds, particularly friendships.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential negative effects of social media on young kids and teens. But the same risks may be true for adults. A review study suggests addiction symptoms, such as failure to pay attention to personal life, procrastination and escapism, appear to be present in some people who use social media excessively (过度地).
A study also shows that when people stop using the Internet, they also go through small but measurable physical effects. Rather than promoting health, as frequent interactions (互动) with offline social networks do, the findings show that interacting with social media may predict the opposite result for young adults—it may undermine it.
In fact, another study found that social media use is linked to greater feelings of social isolation (隔离). We fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others as we check our social media pages. The study looked at how we make comparisons with others’ posts, in “upward” or “downward” directions—that is, feeling that we are either worse or better off than our friends. It turned out that both types of comparisons made people feel worse, which is surprising, since in real life, only upward comparisons make people feel bad. But in the social network world, it seems that any kind of comparison is linked to depressive symptoms.
All of this is not to say that there is no benefit of social media—obviously it keeps us connected across great distances. But occupying yourself with social networks when you have some time to kill is very likely a bad idea. If you are feeling brave, try taking a little break, and see how it goes. And if you are going to keep “using” it, then at least try to use it reasonably.
