Text 2
W:Mr. Smith,I hear that you traveled across Europe last summer.
M:Yes,I started in Berlin, stayed in Paris for three days, and ended up in London.
Text 3
W:I have joined the health club. How long do you think it will take me to lose ten pounds?

M:I’m an English teacher. What do you do,Monica?
W:I work at the library at the University of British Columbia.
Text 5
W:Good afternoon. May I help you?
M:Yes,I have a reservation. My name is Su Rumei.
W:So that’s Mr. Su from Beijing,China. Yes,I have your reservation for a double room. It’s for three nights.
Text 6
W:Hey there,how are you doing?
M:Good, how about you? What’re you doing today?
W:I’m good. I’ll probably go to the park and play soccer in the afternoon.
M:Oh,that’s cool. Do you like playing football?
W:Yeah. I like tennis,too.
M:Tennis is fun. My favorite sport is baseball.
W:Oh,really? I’ve never played baseball.
M:It’s tons of fun! Maybe I should show you how.
Text 7
M:Hello,Lucy!
W:Hi,Jim! Have you ever done volunteer work?
M:I’ve thought about it,but I don’t know what I should do. What about you?
W:I do it all the time.
M:Like what? Teaching homeless children? Helping old people?
W:I often clean up parks, and sometimes I work at an animal hospital.
M:Don’t you find it a little boring?
W:No. In fact,I even like doing the cleaning.
M:How much time do you spend on it? Some people I know do it one or two days a week.
W:I don’t do it that much...usually,five hours a week.
M:Could I do volunteer work with you next week?
W:Of course.
Text 8
W:I’ve sent out the invitations for the dinner party,Darling.
M:That’s good. Now what should we do?
W:We’ve got to plan the menu.
M:Oh,that’s right. Do you have anything in mind?
W:I think I’m going to make the chicken salad we had at Pompa last time. Remember I asked the cook for the recipe?
M:Yeah, but did you forget that Linda doesn’t eat chicken?
W:Linda? Oh! I forgot to invite her! She’ll be mad at me. It just slipped my mind.
M:Well,it’s not too late yet. I’ll make a phone call. Don’t worry.
W:Thanks! I think I’m getting old!
M:Looks like you are!
Text 9
W:Hi,Tom. I know you like computers. What started you in them?
M:I built my first computer when I was in junior high school. I was crazy about reading; I studied everything I could get my hands on. Then I began to build my own machine.
W:Where do you see computers going in the future?
M:You’ll have computers on the walls,in your hands,in your cars, throughout your house... They will all be connected and look less like traditional computers today.
W:What kind of computer do you have?
M:A notebook, which I use for all my work in the company and for e-mail.
W:There are some people who say that technology is dangerous and is moving too fast. What’s your opinion?
M:Well, this kind of progress can’t be stopped. Criticism is always voiced in every generation, and of course, every coin has two sides, but it’s important to always consider the good side of the technology we create, for it has improved our society.

Books to Read in Your 20s
The Kite Runner
By Khaled Hosseini
As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend it.
Firefly Lane
By Kristin Hannah
This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book to your best friend.
Half the Sky
By Nicholas D.Kristof
For any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression of women and girls.
The Little Prince
By Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
This children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.

When I found an advertisement for a conference by chance, I instantly told my co-workers. It looked like a great day of presentations highly relevant to our research, and I expected they would be eager to attend with me. However, no one was interested.
A year earlier, I left India for the United Kingdom to pursue my research career. At work, although everyone had a say, I shied away from engaging in discussions or putting forward my opinions. I was afraid my co-workers would realize how weak I really felt. Some mornings just stepping out of my room and going into the lab seemed a tough task.
Socializing didn’t help, as I constantly feared committing social mistakes. I longed for new experiences, but my insecurities prevented me. I started to keep more and more to myself. That began to change after a quiet breakdown in the lab prompted (促使) me to contact the university’s mental health services. The consultant suggested I attend a nearby concert by a famous singer from my home country. I approved of his idea. So, there I was in the packed concert hall, surrounded by strangers—all of us clapping and singing the choruses of the familiar songs. It was a beautiful night, and it proved to be a turning point.
My growing self-confidence carried over into my work, where I started to speak up and put forward my opinions. I offered to help co-workers design experiments and troubleshoot problems. I began to ask questions during departmental meetings. I finally felt like an active member of the group. So, when that conference came around, I felt comfortable to register for attending on my own and I was so glad I did. Not only did I meet the speakers, but I also introduced myself to other attendees. The encounters inspired me to critically evaluate my own professional interests.

Sometimes people call each other “scaredy-cat”. But have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn’t always clever to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either;all feelings need to be expressed.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and put them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are that you’d see little fruit flies flying all over them. They are bad.
You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.

Lots of people may wonder why so many children feel anxious and depressed, despite good family situations, a wealth of educational resources and the care of their parents and teachers. The other day when I met with my interviewees for their stories and discussed the problem with them, the same question occurred to me.
I understand that hardworking parents want their children to perform well in all aspects, including their life and study and have a bright and promising future, but it seems that most of the time parents cannot give their children proper guidance based on actual situations. Many kids are their family’s only child, so they lack interaction with their siblings. As a result, when they don’t know how to get along with their classmates at school, they tend to become overwhelmed.
The symptoms of childhood depression are rarely obvious, meaning parents often fail to notice them early, which results in low diagnosis rates. Usually, by the time the seriousness of the problem is realized, the child has entered a more serious state. Worse still, many parents have no idea on how to treat their children’s mental problems. They seem more likely to believe that the child is undergoing a phase of adolescent rebellion rather than a mental health issue.
After this interview, my understanding is that depression itself is not the thing that hurts those with such problem. Instead, the damaging thing is the perception of the problem. Society’s limited understanding of the condition may actually hinder (阻碍) the patients’ recovery. One interviewee said that letting people know that there is a mentally ill person in your family often results in ridicule (嘲笑) and misunderstanding rather than friendly empathy, especially in smaller communities.
In spite of fierce competition in all walks of life, I still think that giving children a healthy and happy growth environment will play a more important role in producing a bright future than examination results.

Many arguments teenagers have with their parents are about one thing: independence. As you get older, you’ll want to do more stuff on your own, without your mom and dad tagging along with you. The arguments generally start when your parents think you aren’t ready for extra responsibility while you think you are. Arguing with your parents isn’t the best solution at all, but the best solution is gaining trust from your parents. 36

Whenever you have to write a paper,a letter,or any other document for work or school, you probably head toward the computer. Now,most people reach for 56._________ (keyboard) faster than they pick up pens.In a Scottish primary school, however,Mr.Norman Lewis is taking a different approach. He feels that neat handwriting 57._________ (be) still an important skill,so he has his students write not only by hand but also 58._________ old-fashioned fountain pens.
57.答案:is
58.答案:with
write with sth.
Fountain pens 59._________ (use) in schools long ago and have been regaining popularity lately because they are refillable.Today,a writer 60._________ (simple) throws an empty pen away and gets 61._________ new one.
59.答案:were used
61.答案:a
So far,Mr.Lewis is pleased with the results of his experiment. He reports that his students are taking more care with their work, and their self-confidence has improved as well.He is happy with the 62._________ (improve) he sees in his students’ writing 63._________ in his own writing. He knows that computers are here 64._________ (stay) and that they will not disappear. However,he believes that the practice with fountain pens helps students to focus,to write faster, and they can feel proud of 65._________ (they).
63.答案:and
64.答案:to stay
be here to stay为固定搭配,意为“已经成为生活中的一部分”。

The Old Man and the Sea was written by Ernest Hemingway. The hero is an old fisherman named Santiago.
The novel tells a story about how the hero fights against his enemy. He doesn’t catch a fish for 84 days in a row. On the 85th day, he meets a very large fish, which is difficult to cope with. Even faced with the threat from a shark, he finally succeeds in bringing the fish home.
Personally, I think this is a touching story that will motivate everyone, whatever their age.
The Sports Day was fast coming to the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. Jim, one of the fast runners of the school, was confident that he would win so he was not doing anything at all. “You have to work hard to come first in the race, Jim. You are not practicing at all,” said Jim’s mother.
“Mom, you know how fast I am! Then why should I waste my time running? Only I will win;no one else will win!” shouted Jim. “Jim, you may be right but talent without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you dearly,” his mother warned him. Jim just laughed and shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders. He was so confident that he would win the prize as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tim,a classmate of Jim, was also participating in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he was very devoted and practiced till late night and had developed great endurance (耐力) and willpower (意志力) to win the race.
There were a few days left for the Sports Day but Jim did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night. The Sports Day was almost around the corner but Jim was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his devotion and hard work had become a very fast runner.
At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students crowded the ground to cheer their favorites. The signal was given to the participants to begin the race. The coach blew the whistle and everyone began to run towards the finishing line. It was so exciting. Jim and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck and neck
Suddenly, Jim went ahead of Tim. _________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tim’s mother came to Tim and praised him for his hard work.

Suddenly, Jim went ahead of Tim. The crowd cheered for him. Soon, it was clear that Jim was going to beat Tim. But, when they were just a few metres away from the finishing line, Tim surprisingly picked up speed and ran ahead of Jim and reached the finishing line. Tim surprised everyone with his brilliant performance. He proudly received the prize and the money.
