Text 1
M:I can't connect to the Wi-Fi.I think I've damaged my phone.
W:No, the whole network is down.It must be my dad.He turned it off to make me study.
Text 2
W:Hello, Hunter.Where are you?
M:Hello, Lucy.I've been already in the shopping center.I drove all the way here. There's a traffic jam on the main street. It would be a wise choice for you to take the subway here instead of the bus.
Text 3
M:I would like to return the jacket, please.
W:Do you dislike the size or the color?
M:Neither. But my wife found there was a small hole in the right pocket when I got home.
W:Oh, I'm terribly sorry, Sir.
Text 4
W:John, can you help Linda with those boxes? I need to help this customer with a product return.
M:No problem.I just need to sign the delivery drivers' forms, and then I will help her.
W:Thank you.
Text 5
M:Hi,Linda! I heard you won the school writing contest. Can you give me some tips to be a success? I entered a contest at the city library, but didn't win.
W:I didn't win the school writing contest.I sent the same story to the newspaper and surprisingly got an award.
Text 6
M:Shall we see a movie after work?
W:Oh, I've promised to go swimming with Helen.
M:What a shame! Then do you have any plans this weekend? I've booked two tickets for the international flower show.Would you like to go with me?
W:Well, I usually go to see my parents on Saturday, but I'll be free on Sunday.
M:Let's make it Sunday, OK?
W:Fine.Oh, I have to get back to work.I've got tons of things to deal with on my desk.
Text 7
M:What is that music?
W:Oh, sorry to disturb you.Let me turn it down.
M:No, it's good.I like slow songs like that.I might buy it.
W:You won't be able to.That is me playing.
M:You're a musician? Was that you playing the guitar?
W:Yes.We have a band.My brother plays the piano and we also have a drummer and another guitar player.
M:You are so good.Where did you learn to play so well?
W:I come from a family of musicians and I studied music at university.
M:You should make a record. If music like that could be played on the radio, you would be famous.
W:It's nice of you to say so.Perhaps one day we will.
Text 8
M:Look at this photo. You look like that famous TV presenter in black with your hair like that.
W:No, she is older than me.Anyway, her hair is red, not brown.
M:Why did you have it like that?
W:I had it cut especially for that holiday.I thought it looked good.
M:Look! Here's a photo of us in the sea.Do you remember how warm the water was?
W:Yes.And then on the beach a guy kept trying to persuade us to let him draw pictures of us.
M:Oh, yes, I nearly had forgotten about him.He wouldn't take no for an answer, would he?
W:Poor man.He must have needed money.Maybe we should have agreed.
Text 9
M:Are you going for the job interview tomorrow?
W:Yes,I have to go to the Lincoln Street at 10:00 a.m.Can you drive me there tomorrow?
M:Yes, of course. It's a long way to take a bus there.
W:Thanks a lot. That's a great help. Well, you know, I haven't had much working experience.
M:I don't think that matters. You're the right person they are looking for.And I know they need engineers.
W:Well, I don't know.
M:Don't you want the job?
W:Of course I do. I really need it. And there's another thing. I don't think I'm good enough at language.
M:But your German is really good. I was impressed by the way you talked to those people we met on holiday last year.
W:But I don't think I speak German well enough, and my French is terrible.
M:Well, I don't agree. You have talent in languages.
W:It's very nice of you to cheer me up,but I'm still worried I'm not going to get the job.
M:We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?
Text 10
My daughter Cathy always gets so excited when there is a food donation at school. She searches my kitchen, takes away all the canned foods and throws them into the big box in the school hallway. She's also enthusiastic about searching my wallet for coins to put in the charity collection box in her classroom. While I'm glad to see how much she likes giving to others,I wonder if she would be generous in sharing her own money or toys.Teaching kids to give is just as important as teaching them to save and spend.Several of my friends have started
teaching their children to make charity a part of their daily life. For example, the Smiths give their son nine dollars a week as pocket money. Each week he's expected to set aside two dollars for saving and one dollar for giving. If you want your kids to appreciate the importance of charity, the Smiths suggest starting the charity lesson by giving your child one week to find a charity they would like to support. At the end of the week have a family meeting to talk about it.

Creating Young V&A
When the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green was founded in 1872, it was East London's first public museum.Today, we are transforming this beloved building into a new national museum of design and creativity dedicated entirely to children.
Relaunching later this year as Young V&A, the museum will be a place to imagine, play, create, debate and design.Young V&A will help children to develop abilities such as creative thinking, problem-solving and collaboration through imaginative, hands-on gallery displays and creative programming for schools, families and community groups.
How you can help
In a climate of growing inequality and reduced funding for the arts, it is vital that we support young people's creative development. We rely on your generous donations and are thankful for your support.Whether you can give £25 or £25,000, all donations will help to complete this project.
£25 could buy books for the new Reading Room.
£75 could buy sensory materials to help bring the collection to life for young visitors.
£150 could conserve and display an inspirational object in the permanent galleries.
£5,000 could help furnish the new creative studios in the Learning Centre.
Ways to give

During the cold winter months of 2013, Shyam Bihari Prasad, an old retired man, moved to Vasant Kunj in New Delhi to live with his daughter. This elderly gentleman would visit a temple near his home every morning, where he would often see several children standing outside, begging the people for food.
“These children have working parents who lock their homes when they go to work. They have to leave their children outside to look after themselves.Classes in the local government school start only at 10:00 a.m., so these children beg for food outside the temple before going to school,” says Prasad.
One morning, Prasad bought biscuits from the shop near the temple gate for a few of them. When talking with them, Prasad learnt more about their school and the different classes the children attended. He also asked them some basic questions and realized they had no grasp of simple concepts in science and math, nor any knowledge of spelling and writing in English and Hindi. He asked them if they would like to study. After receiving a positive response, he promised to meet them on the pavement outside the temple the next day at 8:00 a.m.Ever since that cold winter morning in November 2013, these street children have had classes on the pavement outside the temple.
Several local residents take a keen interest in the classes as well, offering help when they have time.Madam Manju comes in to teach the children English, Brother Singh helps them with math, and Madam Kirtika gives lessons in both science and math. There are others who donate books and some who buy snacks for the children.
Despite the noisy vehicles and passers-by, the children here are focused and eager to read and write. They didn't know how to sit or talk properly at first. Now they have changed and help each other with their studies.Shyam Bihari Prasad has turned the lives of many of these children around. They are doing well in their school exams and are spending happy and fruitful mornings instead of begging on the street.

24.Why did the children wander around the temple?
A.They were too young to go to school and had to kill time there.
B.The temple was a good place for them to play and study.
C.Their parents lock their homes before their classes start.

For Cruz, who grew up in Peru's mountainous region of Cuzco, fog represents a massive opportunity. As a boy, he had to hike for more than an hour every day across rough hills to collect water from the nearest source. But over time, he realized that during the rainy season, drops of water would gather in the large leaves of banana trees. One day, he and his father built a canal system with the leaves to collect water. He moved to Lima at the age of 25.
Shocked by the water shortages and the expensive water supply that some of the city's poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos in Agua in 2005.The idea was to deploy the method he learned in his hometown on a larger, better-adapted scale, which would provide free, independently sourced and easily accessible water for those who needed it most.He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s.The nonprofit provided the materials for free, and the community built the infrastructure (基础设施) themselves.
At the highest point of Los Tres Miradores, there is a curious set of large structures that is like a fleet of ships in the sky. They are so-called “fog catchers”.The 40 fog catchers there provide enough water for 180 families, whether to bathe, clean, drink (after being filtered at home) or to irrigate crops on small garden patches.
Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions.German researcher Lummerich says, “They are cheap and easy to construct. In a world searching for water supply systems, it is one important approach that can make an essential difference locally. It could make the difference between having water and not having water available.” There are some issues, however. For one, fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. At the same time, fog catchers must be properly cleaned and maintained to stay effective. Most crucially, appropriate climate conditions are required.Fog isn't everywhere.

28.Why did Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos in Agua in 2005?

解析:标题归纳题。通读全文并结合最后一段中的“Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions.”
D
An 8-year-old boy I know is small for his age, shorter and slighter than his friends, even smaller than his 5-year-old sister.Concerned about the increasing use and possible risks of growth hormones (生长激素), I asked his mother if she'd considered treating him with it.She replied, “Not really. He's built like his father, who was short and slight as a boy and didn't shoot up until college.”
His father, at 41, is now 6 feet tall, though still very slender. He recalls being a reasonably athletic child but without the physical power of his friends, making up for what he lacked in mass with speed and agility.“I enjoyed competitive sports and worked on skills others didn't have,” he told me, and said he encourages his son to recognize and capitalize on the skills he has.
If only every parent with a short but healthy child approached the matter as sensibly.Experts estimate that 60% to 80% of children who are short for their age do not have a growth hormone deficiency (缺乏) or other medical condition that limits growth. But knowing there's a therapy available to increase height, some parents seek a medical solution for a perceived problem, even when there is no medical abnormality. They should also know, however, that new research has linked growth hormone treatment to serious unfavorable health effects years later.
Dr.Adda Grimberg, a doctor at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, recalled that “Twenty years ago, families were focused on health. They came in with a child who was not growing right and wanted to know if there was an underlying disease. Now, more and more, they're focused on height. They want growth hormones, looking for a specific height. But this is not like online shopping; you can't just place an order and make a child the height you want.”
In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of recombinant human growth hormones for the condition known as “idiopathic short stature”, or short build of unknown cause, which is not a disease. But it has caused a growing number of parents to consider using the hormones to boost the height of their children.
The resulting rush to therapy reflects concerns about a widespread societal bias (偏见) against shortness, rather than a true medical need.Experts have noted that the practice backs up the belief that short stature is unacceptable, leading to an increasing demand for therapy. It is far better, Dr.Grimberg suggested, to help a short child develop coping skills than to buy inches through medicine.

Whoever wrote the song “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” must have never experienced the holiday blues.Fortunately, psychological research suggests some effective ways you can use to beat the holiday blues. The key point is that sadness and other tough emotions are not what we should try to avoid. 36 Here are four strategies to help you make your own happiness recipe this holiday season.
Don't force cheer
At family gatherings with cousins you secretly can't stand, you tend to put on a happy face.Indeed, that might even seem like the most mature response—no drama, no conflict. But a 2011 study followed dozens of bus drivers, looking to see when they gave forced or honest smiles at their passengers. 37 Thus, trying to force happiness seems to have the opposite effects.
38
The results of the bus-driver study can be explained by researchers who find that negative feelings like sadness or anger only increase when we try to control them.We feel bad when our appearance is not consistent with our inside feelings. We don't like contradictory behavior.
Respond cautiously
Recently, scientists have been paying special attention to the benefits of caution. When you respond cautiously to an emotional trigger, you pause rather than react at once.A cautious response to a negative event reduces sadness we experience. 39
Enjoy a mix of emotions
Of course, the holidays will bring a mix of highs and lows, but the most important lesson to keep in mind is that this variety of emotions might be the best thing possible for your overall well-being. 40 Just make sure you're balancing them with lighter experiences. And don't forget to give yourself a break.
A.Let off sadness
B.Relax your mind
C.Instead, they can help contribute to a healthy and happy life.
D.We tend to deny the important function emotions serve.
E.In other words, sadness, anger, and other difficult emotions are nothing to fear.
F.Besides, it is associated with less anxiety, and may even carry physiological benefits.
G.The results showed when the drivers pretended to have a good mood, their actual moods got worse.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述的是如何应对假日忧郁,以及如何通过使用不同的策略来在假期中保持心理健康和幸福感。
36.答案:C
解析:空前“The key point is that sadness and other tough emotions are not what we should try to avoid.”说明悲伤和其他难以控制的情绪不是我们应该试图避免的,空格处应该说悲伤和其他难以控制的情绪是有好处的,C选项“Instead, they can help contribute to a healthy and happy life.”说明了悲伤和其他难以控制的情绪的好处,因此承接上文,符合语境。
37.答案:G
解析:空前“But a 2011 study followed dozens of bus drivers, looking to see when they gave forced or honest smiles at their passengers.”说明2011年进行了一项研究,空格处应该说这项研究的结果,G选项“The results showed when the drivers pretended to have a good mood, their actual moods got worse.”说明了研究的结果,因此承接上文,符合语境 。
38.答案:A
解析:空格处是本段小标题,由空后“The results of the bus-driver study can be explained by researchers who find that negative feelings like sadness or anger only increase when we try to control them.We feel bad when our appearance is not consistent with our inside feelings. We don't like contradictory behavior.”可知,本段主要讲的是我们要把悲伤或愤怒的负面情绪释放出来,而不是控制它们,A选项“Let off sadness”说明了要释放悲伤,概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题。
39.答案:F
解析:空前“A cautious response to a negative event reduces sadness we experience.”说明了谨慎反应会减少我们所经历的悲伤,空格处应该说谨慎反应还有什么好处,F选项“Besides, it is associated with less anxiety, and may even carry physiological benefits.”中的it指代前面的“A cautious response”,在上文的基础上补充说明谨慎反应的另一个好处,因此F项承接上文,符合语境 。
40.答案:E
解析:空前“Of course, the holidays will bring a mix of highs and lows, but the most important lesson to keep in mind is that this variety of emotions might be the best thing possible for your overall well-being.”说明各种各样的情绪对整体健康是最好的,也就是即使是负面的情绪,那也是好的,因此不用害怕负面的情绪,E选项“In other words, sadness, anger, and other difficult emotions are nothing to fear.”说明了我们不用怕悲伤、愤怒和其他困难的情绪,和上文意思一致,因此E选项承接上文,符合语境。

My schoolmate Molly and I signed up as volunteers. Then, the charity helped us contact a local poor family. The family had a kindergarten girl Melissa. That Sunday morning, Molly and I took the school bus and reached the family. When seeing a shabby house, we were touched. We nervously knocked on the door.Melissa opened it and looked up at us, seemingly wondering, “Could these girls be trusted?” Still, she welcomed us in.
After communicating with her parents for a while, Melissa gave us a tour of their home.“Here is the TV.Here is the picture I drew,” she said. Her parents, quiet in chairs, watched her and smiled.“Here is my brother, who died,” Melissa added.Molly and I just broke inside.Just then, Melissa's mother called her.Melissa walked over to her, who secretly told her something. Then Melissa came to us, smiling, “Mama said my brother lived inside our hearts forever.”
After a short silence, Molly and I chatted a lot with Melissa's parents. Then, waving goodbye to her parents, Melissa held my hand and Molly's and happily got on our bus.All the way, Melissa appeared excited.

Finally, we reached the cafeteria. It was alive with kids and volunteers.Melissa followed us to the food counter, marveling at the variety of food.“Wow! They must be yummy.” Hearing her words, I began to explain the different options available, while Molly filled her tray with what she selected. As we sat down at a table, Melissa couldn't wait to savor every bite. Her face lit up with satisfaction, reminding us of the importance of our mission.Sensing a kid leaving the cafeteria with some leftovers, Melissa paused, looking at the food counter.“Do you need anything else?” I smiled.
Melissa stood up, saying, “Can I bring some grapes home for my family?” She looked at us, adding, “I think nothing is sweeter than grapes here.” Molly and I exchanged glances and nodded, touched by her thoughtfulness. On the bus ride back, Melissa held a bag of grapes gently as if they were treasures.Hardly had she stepped into the house when she shared her experience and the delicious grapes with her family, which melted our hearts.Over the next few months, we witnessed the positive impact of our presence. As summer ended, we reflected on our experiences and continued volunteering, knowing that even the smallest acts of kindness could make a big difference.
