Ⅳ.阅读理解
When it comes to cancer, red meat is often thought to be the bad guy. But new research from the University of Chicago has shown that a nutrient found in red meat may support our body's ability to fight off cancer cells.
The nutrient in question is called TVA, which is a long-chain fatty acid (酸) that our bodies cannot make by themselves. “TVA in humans is mainly from foods, including beef and lamb,” said study author Jing Chen, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. In the new study, Chen's team collected 255 bioactive substances from nutrients into a database and tested whether any of the substances could affect the immune (免疫的) system's ability to fight cancer cells. Specifically, the team focused on their ability to activate a class of white blood cells called CD8+ T cells, also known as killer T cells, finding and destroying infected cells and, in this case, cancers.
After evaluating the top six substances in both human and mouse cells, the team found that TVA produced the best results. “TVA strengthens CD8+ T cell function and thus promotes T cell-based immune system response to battle cancerous growth,” Chen said. The team found that mice with a diet enriched with TVA saw significantly reduced cancerous growth. “Focusing on bioactivity of nutrients rather than individual food might be more important, and taking supplements (保健品) with enriched bioactive nutrients is likely more efficient than consuming foods containing these nutrients,” Chen said.
Chen thinks there may be other nutrients that can do the same. “There is early data showing that other fatty acids from plants signal through a similar receptor as TVA, so we believe there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing,” he said.

Ⅴ.读后续写
Last Saturday, I drove back home from a long hard day. It was snowing heavily and the traffic inched slowly forward like snails. I was so hungry because I skipped my lunch that I decided to stop by a fast food restaurant and had a quick bite before I continued my journey home. It took me a long time to find a place to park my car. With my face buried in my collar, I walked slowly in the snow. Soon my hands were numb (麻木) with cold, so I pulled my gloves out of my coat pocket and put them on.
I ordered some fried chicken and dug into my pocket for my wallet to pay, only to find it was not there! I remembered I did bring it with me before I set out. Embarrassed, I left the chicken on the counter and said I would return in a minute. Deeply worried, I got out of the restaurant and ran towards my car, wondering where my wallet, with everything in it, was.
Fresh snow was like a blank paper, recording my tracks. My attention fixed on the ground, I expected to find it on my way. Unfortunately, what I found was only the shape of it in the snow. Obviously, I lost it when I pulled my gloves out. Judging from the footprints on the ground, I was not the only one. There was someone else joining my way. But the footprints of this guy were messy. It seemed that he walked back and forth. My heart sank. At a loss of which way he went, I knew I could never claim my wallet back. Bye, fried chicken, not today. I walked towards my car helplessly.
A short, skinny man was standing by my car. He seemed like homeless because he was dressed in oversized worn-out coat and his face was dirty. He was stamping his feet to keep warm. I felt sorry for him because I had nothing to help him, no money, no food.

[参考范文]
The man noticed me and asked if this was my car. Surprised as I was, I nodded, waiting for what he was going to say. He seemed excited, directly coming closer and quickly taking out a wallet, which I knew was mine at the first glance. I couldn't stop staring at the surprising packet. I knew I wouldn't say goodbye to my fried chicken today. But first, I needed to show my sincere gratitude to the good soul, who must have stayed in the cold for long just to find the owner. I opened my wallet, pulled out two banknotes and delivered them to him as my thankfulness. However, he just smiled, shaking his head.
