如何应对恶劣天气
In late June 2018, the weather forecast for western Japan
predicted heavy rain, but no one was prepared for what was to come.
By mid-July, large areas were flooded. Some areas received over 100
cm of rain. The whole buildings were washed away. At least 225
people died, and millions had to leave their homes.
6
The weather is changing. Over the last few years, heavy rains
have caused floods in many parts of the world. There have been
droughts(干旱) in Brazil and Australia. Heat waves in Europe
have killed thousands. There have been more hurricanes(飓风) and
tornadoes(龙卷风). In 2017 alone, the financial(财政的) cost
from weather events around the world was 340 billion dollars.
As more wild weather events happen, people are asking questions:
What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or
are we to blame(责怪)?
The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is
natural. But most scientists agree human activity has made the Earth
warmer. This global warming makes heat waves more likely. The
higher temperatures also cause more water to enter the air. This
causes heavier and more rain. Many scientists also believe global
warming makes hurricanes and other storms stronger.
8
This means we're likely to see more wild weather. “But we don't
have to just stand there and take it,” says scientist Michael
Oppenheimer. He and other experts say we need to stop the Earth
from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that
will help save lives.
1. How much rain fell in some areas of Japan in July 2018?
A. Over 100 m. B. Over 100 cm. C. 225 cm. D. 340 cm.
2. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To give examples of recent wild weather events.
B. To describe a serious flood that happened in 2017.
C. To guess how the weather will change in a few years.
D. To count the financial cost caused by wild weather.
√

3. What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. A worried world.
B. Wild weather.
C. The increase in wild weather.
D. Deaths caused by wild weather.
4. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Scientists are trying to understand what causes hurricanes.
B. Wild weather is partly a result of human activity.
C. Higher temperatures lead to more rainfall.
D. Global warming makes storms stronger.
√

5. [观点推断]Which of the following would
Oppenheimer probably agree with?
A. It is too late to stop global warming.
B. Wild weather is not caused by global warming.
C. People don't have to think much about global warming.
D. Stop global warming, and the weather will get better.

冰雹来袭:认识与防范
It happens in summer or late spring, lasts about 2 to 10 minutes
and has small balls of ice that fall like rain. What could it be? It is
hail(冰雹), also called hailstone or hailstorms. ①
Hailstorms often visit the United States. The area like Nebraska,
Colorado and Wyoming would experience seven to nine hail days
every year. The place with the most hail in the world is Kenya. It
hails about 130 out of 365 days a year. ②
17
It's hard to tell exactly when a hailstorm might come. They can
cause lots of damage (破坏) to people, buildings, cars, plants and
animals. In fact, hailstorms can even cause deaths. ③
The best way to protect yourself from a hailstorm is to be
prepared. We all should have our tools prepared all year round, and
those tools should include helmets(头盔). They can help you save
your head from both the hail itself and other things brought by
heavy storms. Make sure you stay inside until the hail stops and stay
away from windows. If possible, find a room at least one level down
from the top of the house. If you get caught outside in a hailstorm,
try your best to run into a house. If you can't find a house to stay
in, find something to protect your head. Remember that stay out of
low land areas, because they could be filled with water. Avoid trees
because they are also dangerous. ④
