机智的汤姆·索亚
(2024重庆B卷改编)On Saturday morning, all the summer world
was sweet and fresh. There was cheer in every face, except Tom
Sawyer.
Aunt Polly made him paint their fence(栅栏) as a punishment.
It was 90 feet long and 9 feet high. He stared at the fence, and all
gladness left him. “This will take forever,” he sighed(叹气).
7
He knew the boys with all kinds of toys would soon come along
and make fun of him. At this dark and hopeless moment, an idea
came to him! He went back to work quietly.
Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and
carrying a big apple.
Tom went on painting—paid no attention to him. Ben stared a
moment and called Tom.
No answer. Tom surveyed his last touch with the eye of an artist,
then he gave his brush another gentle sweep. Ben called him again.
“Why, it's you, Ben! I wasn't noticing.” Tom turned suddenly
and said.
“I'm going to swim,” said Ben. “Do you want to come? Oh, you
have to work. What a pity!”
“I'm not working, ” Tom answered. “Well, maybe it is working,
but I like it.”
“What?” shouted Ben. “You like it?”
“Of course,” Tom kept painting, and said. “Boys don't get to
paint a fence every day.”
Ben stopped eating his apple and watched Tom. Tom swept his
brush gently back and forth. The fence looked clean and white.
Before long, Ben really wanted to paint. “Let me try a little,” he
begged Tom.
Tom considered, “No, I can't. Aunt Polly warned me to do it
well. Only one boy in a thousand has the talent to paint.”
“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I'll be very careful. I'll give you
my apple.”
Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his
heart. Tom rested under the tree. He ate the apple and smiled.

新兴热门运动:飞盘
In recent years, a sport has become popular for how social it is.
It can also be competitive. The sport is frisbee(飞盘).
The History of Frisbee
In the early 20th century, pies were very popular with Yale
University students. They not only enjoyed eating the pie, but also
throwing the empty pie plate around. This was the first version of
the frisbee.
18
According to a research, it now beats skateboarding, cycling and
other sports as one of the most popular sports among young
people—about 60 percent of people who took part in the survey said
they want to make new friends by playing the game.
Frisbee is a very social game. Men and women can play the
sport together and there is no body contact. People have seen friends
more often since they started playing frisbee.
For those who want to compete, there are many choices, too.
They can try the team disc(圆盘状物) sport called “ultimate”.
Unlike some games, ultimate encourages honesty and fair play, with
no judges(裁判) on the court. In another game called “disc golf”,
players try to hit faraway targets(目标) with a disc.
Playing Rules
The rules of frisbee are very simple. The players' main goal is
simply to catch the frisbee. The thrower can't move when throwing
the frisbee, while others without the frisbee can move as they want.
In a team game, a player will try to get the frisbee and throw it to
a teammate.
The increasing popularity of the activity has got the attention of
the government. On July 7, 2022, it was announced that the first
Chinese Frisbee League was held. Now, this sport can be seen in
many cities around the country and has become a national exercise
