1.(23-24八年级下·山东淄博·期中)As a child, Alain Robert was afraid of height. One day, when he was 12, he returned home from school. At the front door of his building, he looked for his keys. He didn’t have them. It was 3: 30 p.m and his parents worked until 6: 00 p.m.
Alain looked at his flat on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and imagined himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” Fifteen minutes later, he was in his house and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Alain still climbs buildings. In 2003, he climbed a building in London dressed as Spiderman to advertise the movie. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101 (one of the tallest buildings in the world). To reach the top of a building, Alain uses only his hands and special shoes. Alain climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity—for children and the homeless.
When he climbs, he wants to send a message to people. If you have a dream- something you really want to do—it can become real. But you must be brave and keep trying. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it”.

2.Which floor did Alain live?
3.Why did Alain climb a building in London dressed as Spiderman?
4.How does Alain reach the top of Taipei 101?

Has a person ever warmly held a door open for you? How do you feel after playing with friends? And what would you say is your favourite family memory? These questions have one thing in common: they’re all about connecting with people. “Let’s Connect” is the theme of this year’s Children’s Mental (心理的) Health week. It improves mental health by building healthy social (社会的) connections.
Humans naturally connect with others, whether that’s family, friends or people in our community. Healthy connections give people energy and support—we all need people to celebrate and share our worries with. Social connections aren’t just about mental health; they improve physical health too, helping us to live a long life.
Then how to connect with others? “You can reach out and connect with people in so many different ways,” says Julia Clements, the organizer behind Children’s Mental Health Week. You can connect in person or online, with your friends, parents, teachers or classmates. It’s not just people, either. “Some people feel connected with their pets or in nature,” says Clements. She agrees talking to others can be helpful to a lonely person. She advises making time to build more connections through actions as well as words.
Everybody may feel lonely sometimes and refuse to talk to others. “Remember that there are always people that care for you,” advises Clements. She says it’s important to tell someone you trust about how you are feeling, or safe organizations such as Helpline or Shout. They can really help.
1.What do the three questions in the beginning have in common?
2.What does the underlined word “they” refer to (指的是) in Paragraph 2?
3.According to Clements, what can be helpful to a lonely person?
4.Being a teenager, what can you learn from the passage? Write 30 words or more.

In 2015, Liu Weixue gave up a well-paid job as a designer to learn from his grandfather the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas. “I fell in love with the art at a very young age. I want to bring it to life.” Liu said. “When it rains, someone uses the umbrella—that’s what I want to see.”
There are more than 70 steps, including making bamboo ribs (竹伞骨) and pasting (样) papers. It takes at least a week to make an umbrella. After mastering the skills, Liu opened a studio (工作坊) and worked with local umbrella-making masters.
In order to win the hearts of young people, Liu improved the oil paper umbrellas. As the traditional paper breaks easily, he used a thicker (更厚的) paper. He uses a lighter kind of bamboo to make the ribs, so the umbrellas weigh less. As young people like hand-painted pictures, he invites painters to draw patterns (图案) on the umbrella cover.
Since online shopping is popular, Liu opened an online shop to sell umbrellas. It now has more than 80,000 followers. Still, Liu doesn’t hurry. To ensure quality (保证质量), his studio makes only 1,000 umbrellas each year.
Liu hopes the art will be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students and shows up at events in different places to promote (推广) the art.

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. In China, people created the 24 solar terms thousands of years ago to guide agricultural (农业的) production.
Rain Water is one of the 24 solar terms which stands for the increase (增加) in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, the river water melts, wild geese fly from south to north, and trees and grass turn green again.
Here are several things you may not know but can make you know about Rain Water better. Let me introduce them to you.
Rain in spring is as precious (宝贵的) as oil
According to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil. In northern China the spring drought (旱灾) is common. So rain is so precious and important to the crops.
Return of a cold period
A returning cold in the late spring often happens during Rain Water. The fast increase in air humidity (湿度) can result in lower temperature and wet weather. Remember not to take off your coats so early in this period.
Visit to in-laws (姻亲)
One of the main customs during Rain Water is sons-in-law (女婿) visiting their in-laws and giving gifts. According to the tradition, gifts are usually two cane chairs with four meters of red belt. They stand for good health and long life. Another traditional gift is cooked pig’s knuckles (蹄). The son-in-law expresses his thankfulness this way.

How much do you know about Chinese oil-paper umbrellas? They are not just tools (工具) to keep people away from rain or sunlight, but also works of art (艺术品) with rich cultural meaning in China.
Chinese oil-paper umbrellas are one of the world’s oldest umbrellas. According to historical records, the first oil-paper umbrella came out during the Eastern Han Dynasty. They soon became very popular, especially among the literati (文人). They loved to write and draw on the umbrella to show their literacy tastes and painting skills.
Oil-paper umbrellas are a necessary part of traditional Chinese weddings (婚礼). A red oil-paper umbrella is needed when the bride (新娘) goes into the groom’s home. That’s because people believe the umbrella can help stop bad luck. Also, the sound of oil-paper in Chinese sounds like “youzi”, which means having more children.
It takes quite a lot of time and effort to make a Chinese oil-paper umbrella by hand. Luzhou in southwest China’s Sichuan Province is now the only main production place for handmade oil-paper umbrellas in China. There, craftsmen (手艺人) must complete more than 90 steps and use over 100 different tools to make a single umbrella. With all their efforts, a traditional oil-paper umbrella made in Luzhou can stand strong winds and 3,000 openings and closings.

Jiang Mengnan, a 30-year-old woman who was born in a small village of Yizhang County, Chenzhou City, received the 2021 Touching China Award. The award ceremony (典礼) was broadcast live on CCTV on the evening of March 3, 2022.
She lost all her hearing due to nerve (神经) deafness caused by drugs (药物) when she was six months old. Since then, she’s been living in a silent world, where she can only communicate with others by looking at their mouths and reading their lips (嘴唇).
When she first learned to read lips, Jiang touched her parents’ throats to feel the vibration (振动) when they spoke and tried so hard to imitate (模仿) their lip movements in front of mirrors. Her parents needed to repeat a syllable (音节) for many times before she could learn it.
By doing so, Jiang finally was able to “listen” and “speak” in her own way. Jiang’s parents, who are both teachers, love reading books and newspapers. It is because of their decision to encourage her to learn lip reading that Jiang could go further in her pursuit (追求) of study.
Her perseverance (毅力) later earned her the admission to Jilin University, where she got a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree.
Jiang said that she chose to study in Jilin University because her role model Zhang Haidi, an outstanding woman with disability, studied and graduated from the university. Moreover, she had a hero dream of being a doctor to save lives.
In September 2018, Jiang was admitted as a doctoral candidate (博士研究生) in the School of Life Sciences, Tsinghua University.

Directed (执导) by Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (举击). The name YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea —you only live once.
Jia was born in 1982. She has tried many different roles in her life, including crosstalk (相声) and sketch (小品) performer, variety show (综艺节目) guest and actress. It was in 2019 that she became a director for the first time, making her movie Hi, Mom (《你好,李焕英》).
Jia didn’t study directing at university. And she believes this is both a good and bad thing. It makes her feel freer in film making because she doesn’t need to follow a fixed style (风格).To everyone’s surprise, Hi, Mom made her the world’s highest-grossing (票房最高的) woman director before 2023.
Before making YOLO, Jia was often seen as an overweight comedian (肥胖的喜剧演员). She often made jokes about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost 50 kg and looked very different. Some people online said even her voice became softer, and they call this a “rebirth” for Jia.
In Jia’s eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of staying true to herself. “It’s hard to predict (预言) one’s life. I’m just following my heart but not looking for changes on purpose (故意地). Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my energy(精力) into them,” Jia told Xinhua.
“Jia didn’t change at all. She’s just being more herself,” said talk show host Chen Luyu in her program A Date With Luyu (《鲁豫有约》).

Shadow puppetry (皮影戏) started during the Western Han Dynasty and it has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap.
The puppets are usually made from leather (皮革) or paper. It is hard to make them. The puppet-makers have to take 24 steps, which include washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting, to make a puppet.
Just like many things that are in danger, traditional arts also face the risk of disappearing. “Many young people still think that shadow puppetry is an old-fashioned folk art,” said Liu Chaokan, the sixth-generation inheritor (继承人) of shadow puppetry in Yunnan province.
Liu understands why old art forms couldn’t interest young people, so he connects new stories with the traditional form of storytelling. In a recent show based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West, Baigujing dances to a Korean pop song. Popular Chinese cartoon characters, together with the modern factors (元素), are Liu’s secret in getting the attention of children. “Since they couldn’t understand those old stories, why don’t we show them the cartoon characters they love in shadow puppetry shows?” said Liu.
To keep the old art forever young, Liu thinks they should respect (尊重) its traditions and protect the basic of the art.

During the Festival, Liu Huimin and his team are preparing for the show called “Datiehua” (打铁花). It is the traditional art for more than 1,000 years—since the Song Dynasty. As its name suggests, the traditional art was created by the way of making iron (铁). It was seen as a form of celebration. When villagers open a business or get married, they invite Liu and his team to celebrate the big activity and hope the show can bring them good luck.
For Liu and the villagers in Shanxi, Datiehua is one of the most popular Spring Festival shows, just like the Yangko dance, and drum beating.
According to Liu, they need to heat the iron for nearly 40 minutes before the show starts and the temperature must be higher than 1, 500℃.
When night falls, the show starts. Using a big long spoon, a man takes out the molten (熔化的) iron. Then he hits the spoon with a piece of wood. Bang! Bang! The red-hot molten iron becomes beautiful “stars”. These shining “stars” light up the night sky. In some ways, they can be more beautiful. People sit or stand to watch the show with happy smiles on their faces.
Behind the wonderful show, however, has great danger. The artists wear hats and sheepskin coats as protection, but accidents still happen. During a performance in Henan province, Liu’s hair and face got burnt.
“People ask me why I’m still doing it when it’s so dangerous. I tell them that I’m just happy to bring joy to people.” Liu explained.

Disney has made many cartoon movies. The princesses (公主们) are often girls’ favorites. However, have you noticed that Disney princesses are changing?
In the early Disney cartoon movies, princesses like Snow White, Cinderella are usually good-looking and kind-hearted. But they depend on others to get out of trouble and find happiness. They end up living happily with their princes.
But now more girls know they have to fight for their own happiness. Disney has noticed the change. So the princesses in its newer movies don’t just have good looks.
Merida is a good example. She was a princess and she likes going on adventures. She spends her days practicing archery (射箭), riding her horse and experiencing the world. She loves her family, but she wants to create her own life.
Disney even put up their “new rules for being a modern princess”. The rules include: Care for others; Live healthily; Be honest; Be friendly; Believe in yourself; Try your best; Never give up.
None of the rules are about the looks of a princess. Anyway, one’s inner beauty is more valuable.

Alain looked at his flat on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and imagined himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” Fifteen minutes later, he was in his house and his fear of heights was gone.

2.What does the underlined word “they” refer to (指的是) in Paragraph 2?

In 2015, Liu Weixue gave up a well-paid job as a designer to learn from his grandfather the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas. “I fell in love with the art at a very young age.

The 73-year-old used to be a Chinese teacher. After retirement (退休), Yang wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms (平台) gave her the idea of continuing her teaching online. At first, she offered free pinyin lessons for kids. However, she gradually learned among her fans there are many illiterate (不识字的) adults. So she decided to give lessons online for adults. Yang said she found many illiterate adults develop a sense of shame (羞愧的).
They are afraid to go to new places, worried that they couldn’t teach their children. So she added more information in her lessons to meet their needs.
“Many illiterate adults didn’t have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in need of learning words. I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said.
Considering that most adult students have to make time to attend the lessons, Yang holds two live-streaming lessons every day starting at 8: 30 am and 8: 30 pm. Now she has nearly 300,000 fans on the short video platform Douyin.
Zhang Mei who was born and raised in the countryside is one of them. She had never been to school. She watches Yang’s live-streaming whenever she has spare time. Now she can read Chinese characters with pinyin and she has found a job.
