1.(23-24八年级下·安徽合肥·期中)Are people less happy or happier when they get older? If your answer is “happier”, then you are right. Study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.
The findings came from a Gallup Survey of more than three hundred and forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped greatly after people arrived at their fifties. Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early seventies.
The study also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns (情感模式) as they grow older. However, women at all ages were reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
So why would happiness increase (增长) with age? One theory (推测) is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

3.(23-24八年级下·北京房山·期中)People use laughter to communicate with others. It’s how we tell friends that we find their jokes funny, or how kids in a park show that they are having fun. Humans laugh to express many kinds of feelings, from happy to sad, from like to hate and so on. But how about animals? Do they also laugh? If they do laugh, is there a connection between animals’ laughing and playing?
A study shows that not only humans but also some animals enjoy good laughter. Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA, suggested that a number of animals can laugh. Through their research, they found that 65 kinds or groups of animals laugh while playing. The animals that laugh the most include monkeys, rats and dolphins.
Animal sound sometimes is like a short laughter, but scientists said that not all of these are connected to playing. After all, animals sometimes make sound as if they are laughing but in fact, they are in danger, or perhaps they are using it to fight with animals that may eat them.
Sasha Winkler, a scientist studying animal behavior, noticed that the small monkeys she worked with liked to play together by catching each other. While having fun together, they made panting sounds, almost like they were out of breath, which reminded Winkler of quiet laughter. In that sense, researchers pointed out very interesting ideas of laughter and panting. They believe that laughter comes from heavy breathing during play.
Study suggests that many animals laugh so that their playing partner knows they are having fun. This is important because animal play can sometimes look like fighting. Laughter becomes a way for animals to stop harmful act when communicating with others. Some animals also make a “play face” like a smile to show that they are happy and not angry.
One big difference between human laughter and animal laughter is that humans laugh much more loudly. Most sounds animals make during play are very quiet so they can only be heard by the animal they are playing with. But for humans, loud laughter is a sign that we’re part of a group. “It’s really amazing that so many animals have a similar function of sound during play,” said Winkler. “These special parts of animal laughter will also be an important area for future study.”
1.Animals sometimes make sound as if they are laughing when they want to _______.
A.hide their true feelings
B.play tricks on their partners
C.interest more partners to join in
D.warn animals that may eat them
2.The word “panting” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to _______.
A.loud B.quiet C.breathless
3.What do you know about animal laughter from the passage? _______
A.All kinds of animals laugh when they are playing.
B.It can be a way for animals to stop harmful act.
C.Animals make sound of laugh louder than humans.
D.It usually shows they are happy and not angry.
4.Why does the writer mention the difference in the last paragraph? _______
A.To lead to the topic of future research on laughter.
B.To show the function of animal laugh during play.
C.To explain that loud laughter is a sign for people to be in a group.
D.To suggest that human should train animals to laugh while playing.

4.(23-24八年级下·重庆綦江·期中)Every year, as the summer days grow shorter, an amazing change happens in Canadian forests. As summer changes to autumn, the trees turn colors, changing from summer green to shades of red, orange, and yellow.
My grandmother told me that a strange man came at night with a paint brush to paint the leaves those wonderful colors. And I believed her, for it was a wonderful way of explaining this change to a little boy. But as I grew older, my natural curiosity (好奇) led me to do some research on my own.
Trees need food, just like all lives. Leaves produce food for the tree. It’s just sugar, which is sometimes called glucose (葡萄糖). Leaves use sunlight to change water and CO₂ into oxygen (氧气). The process is known as photo-synthesis (光合作用). A chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素) helps make this happen. Chlorophyll is the reason why leaves are green in summer.
However, Canadian winters are long, cold and dark. There isn’t enough sunshine in winter for the leaves to make food. In autumn, as the days shorten, the trees get a message to slow down. It’s time to take a rest. Don’t worry, though. They have enough food prepared to last all winter.
When the leaves stop making food, they no longer need to make chlorophyll. Slowly, the chlorophyll disappears. Remember, this is the chemical that makes leaves green. As the chlorophyll goes away, so does the green color. We begin to see the other colors that are always there. We could not see them before because green is a strong color.
1.The writer thought ________ changed the color of leaves in autumn when he was a child.
A.the wind B.a strange man C.the sun D.his grandmother
2.Which of the following can NOT help make the photo-synthesis happen?
A.Water. B.CO₂ C.Glucose. D.Chlorophyll.
3.What is the passage mainly about?
A.What magic chemicals we have now. B.What food trees need during a year.
C.How a strange man painted trees. D.Why leaves change colors in autumn.
4.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?

2.细节理解题。根据第三段“Leaves use sunlight to change water and CO₂ into oxygen. The process is known as photo-synthesis. A chemical called chlorophyll helps make this happen.”
5.(23-24八年级下·内蒙古鄂尔多斯·期中)Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep (深), such as your wishes or fears (害怕), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong, and though they may not be perfect (完美的), they at least will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose (故意地) to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value (重视) all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.
1.If you and David are neighbors and classmates, and do things together, but don’t share your feelings, you are “________”.
A.pest friend B.guest friends C.best friends D.not friends
2.The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.how to make a best friend B.how to learn from your best friends
C.what a “best friend” is D.what a best friend can do for you
3.From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A.pest friends are more important than guest friends
B.a “pest friend” will never become your best friend
C.a best friend hardly does something bad to you
D.we miss our best friends when we’re not with them
4.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A.B. C. D.

6.(23-24八年级下·辽宁营口·期中)The Earth has a history of more than 4 billion years, and modern man has lived on it for only 35,000 years. During that time, people have changed the Earth in many ways. They have done both good and bad things to the Earth.
In big cities, cars and buses have polluted the air so that many people now have very bad health problems. Factories have also polluted the land, the air and the water. As a result, many rivers and lakes have become very dirty. Some of them are even dead now.
All over the world, people have cut down millions of trees. Many types of animals, as a result, are in danger and the quality of the air has become worse.
At the same time, people burn oil, coal and wood. The dirty air has formed a “ blanket” around the Earth. The heat from the Sun cannot go away, so the air temperature is rising. This is called the greenhouse effect. This means that the level of the sea is rising and the climate is changing.
These problems are very serious for our future, but we can do something now. People have already taken action to improve the environment. We can be green consumers. That is, we should only buy and use things that do not damage the environment. We should stop the habit of using things once and then throwing them away. Many countries now use the wind, the Sun and the sea to make electricity. In some cities, for example, people cannot drive cars on certain days. In other places, they use electric cars and buses. These are just a few of many things we can do.

7.(23-24八年级下·辽宁营口·期中)As climate change brings dangers to people, we are now facing another problem—underground climate change. It is reported from a research team from Northwestern University, US that with the development of cities, the rising underground temperature is causing the ground to heat up and deform (变形).
In the last three years, the team had put more than 150 temperature sensors (感应器) under Chicago. The places include subway tunnels, underground parking lots and basements (地下室) of buildings. The temperatures they recorded were surprising. For example, air temperatures in underground structures can be up to 25℃ higher compared to the undisturbed ground temperature. After collecting data in Chicago, the team created computer models to see how temperatures will influence the ground until 2051.
When heated, some soft materials may contract (收缩), and other materials, such as stone, may expand (膨胀) in size. The models showed that warmer temperatures can cause the ground to expand upward by as much as 1.2 centimeters, or sink downward by as much as 0.8 centimeters. This may even cause the ground to crack (开裂), leaving people who live and work above in dangerous situations.
“The effects can be very bad, but it takes a long time to see them.” Rotta Loria, who led the study, said in a report. As scientists have already known a lot about underground climate change, future plans for cities should take it into consideration. Materials that take in heat can be used to keep the heat from entering the ground.
The team also pointed out that the rising temperature could be seen as an opportunity. City planners can try to collect heat underground and send it above for heating.
1.The “undisturbed ground” refers to (指代) places like ________.
A.Basements B.tunnels C.public parks D.underground parking lots
2.Because of the rising underground temperature, what may happen?

B.The underground buildings may contract.
C.More earthquakes may take place.
D.More changes in the ground may happen.
3.To avoid the underground climate change, ________.
A.the materials that can take in heat should be used
B.the number of people who take the underground should be limited (限制)
C.fans should be fixed in the ground
D.more sensors can be put in the ground to record the temperature
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The longest journey begins with the first step.

8.(23-24八年级下·浙江温州·期中)
Are you sitting comfortably? Just stop for a moment and look at your posture (姿势) without making any changes. What are your legs doing?
Are they crossed? And are you a right or left crosser? Some 62 percent of people cross right over left, 26 percent go the other way, and 12 percent have no preference. There are typically two ways to sit in a chair and cross your legs. One is at the knee and the other is at the ankle (踝关节). But as comfortable as it may be to sit with your legs crossed, it is bad for your health and posture.
For a start, research shows that sitting cross-legged can increase the misalignment of the hips (髋关节错位), with one being higher than the other. And it changes the speed at which blood moves in the lower part of the body, which can increase the risk of blood clots (凝块).
Most of the research suggests crossing at the knees is worse than the ankles. Indeed, sitting this way can cause an increase in your blood pressure (血压) because of the pooling of blood and your heart having to work harder against this. And this can increase the risk of damage to your blood vessels (血管), which is why when you take your blood pressure, you should put your feet on the floor.
The longer and more often you sit cross legged, the more likely it is that you’ll have changes in the muscle and bone in your hip. Your neck can also be affected because one side of the body becomes weaker than the other.
So, in order to keep a healthy body, do not cross your legs when you’re reading on a chair or watching TV on the sofa.
1.The writer introduces the topic by ______.
A.giving a suggestion B.raising questions
C.giving background information D.showing facts with numbers
2.According to the passage,______ people cross their left legs over right legs.
A.about 12% B.about 26%
C.about 62% D.about 88%
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Sitting cross legged makes your heart work harder.
B.Research shows crossing at the ankles is worse than the knees.
C.Sitting cross-legged can change the muscle and bone in your neck.
D.Sitting cross-legged can make it possible for blood to clot in the whole body.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Are You a Leg-crosser? B.Mind Your Blood Pressure
C.Sit Without Your Legs Crossed D.Sit With Proper Posture
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.A 4.C

9.(23-24八年级下·浙江温州·期中)People all love watching fireworks. But let’s stop and think about the price we pay for a few minutes of excitement.
To begin with, the amount of money we spend on fireworks is too much. The excitement is gone in a moment. What we really are doing is burning money. Yet, year after year, thousands of cities and towns spend our money on firework shows. Those tax dollars would be put into much better use feeding the hungry and housing the homeless.
Then, there is the matter of pollution. Fireworks have chemicals (化学品) that are harmful to people and animals. Over the years, these chemicals will pollute the air and the water we drink.
Next, let’s consider the rubbish left behind after a firework show. What a mess! We would expect that those who set off the fireworks would pick up the rubbish. But they don’t. The mess they leave behind shows the kind of attitude (态度) many people have towards our environment.
Some fireworks can hurt your hearing, especially the fireworks used in public shows that give off a big BANG. Hearing loss costs too much to pay for. Besides all the safety warnings, we still see hurts and deaths because of fireworks. About 10,000 Americans are hurt every year by fireworks. According to the Council on Fireworks Safety, children from the ages of five to fourteen are the ones most often hurt. Those sparklers (烟花棒) cause 10% of the hurts.
In my opinion, all fireworks should be stopped selling. Public firework shows should be paid for through volunteer money, not tax dollars. Finally, those people playing with firework shows should clean up the mess they make.
1.Which of the following sentences can be put into “_________” in the fifth paragraph?
A.Finally, fireworks are dangerous.
B.Lastly, hearing is important to us.
C.Last but not least, fireworks are too expensive.
D.Fourth, there are too many kinds of fireworks.
2.What effect (影响) do fireworks have on people and the environment?
A.They do no harm to people and animals.
B.They can’t keep people safe and can bring hurts.
C.They don’t bring people a few of excitement
D.They don’t pollute the air and the water people drink.
3.Which of the following ideas would the writer agree with?
A.Public firework shows should be paid for by tax dollars.
B.A small number of harmful chemicals in fireworks are nothing to be worried about.
C.Hearing loss is a small price to pay for the excitement that fireworks provide.
D.The money people spend on fireworks should be better spent helping others.
4.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To talk about firework safety.
B.To express opinions on fireworks.
C.To describe different kinds of fireworks.
D.To talk about noise during firework shows.

10.(23-24八年级下·辽宁沈阳·期中)“Cats!” “Dogs!” These look like fighting words. But you may know clearly there are dog people and cat people. Dog people think dogs are “ man’s best friends”, while cat people like cats because of their elegance (优雅) and independence (独立). Sometimes the two groups even argue with each other. Which pet do people like better?
Dogs seem to win. An associated opinion poll (民意调查) showed that people in the US like dogs more than cats. 74% said they liked dogs “a lot”, but only 41% said the same thing about cats. The Pet Industry White Paper also showed that there are around 11,000,000 more dog owners than cat owners in Chinese cities.
However, cats seem to have more attention online. People call them “masters” (喵主子) online while the dog owners are “servants who clean their masters’ feces” (铲屎官). Even those who don’t have pet cats are doing something called “cloud cat petting” (云吸猫). It means taking pictures and videos of cats online.
An article in The Guardian pointed out that dog owners usually go outside to play with their pets or their neighbors’ dogs. But cats are mainly indoor animals, so the Internet becomes a virtual (虚拟的) “cat park” for cat owners.
But it doesn’t really matter if you like cats or dogs better. Keeping a relation with any animal can make us feel good.

Chris Bailey, a popular blogger (博客作者), tried this out. Here are the advantages (优点) that he has found about drinking water.
First, you lose weight (体重) faster. You don’t have to exercise but just keep away from drinks for 9 days. So water is very important. It is the same as running for 8 kilometers a day! So write down your resolution on a piece of paper and put it on the wall. And you will see the result soon.

What’s more, water washes out something bad in your body. So drinking enough water can stop you from getting old soon. If you want to look young and beautiful, drink water right now! Keep on doing it for longer, and you will be surprised to touch your soft and clean skin (皮肤).

There are many reasons to enjoy drinking tea. However, you should let the hot tea cool down a little before you drink it. Why? A new study reported in the International Journal of Cancer gives the answer.
“Many people enjoy drinking tea, coffee or other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase (增加) the risk of esophageal cancer (食道癌), so you’d better wait until hot drinks cool down before drinking,” the lead writer of the study, Dr. Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society, said.
For the study, Islami and his team followed more than 50, 000 people aged between 40 and 75 years old. They found 317 of those people had esophageal cancer. The National Cancer Institute reported that about 17, 290 Americans had esophageal cancer in a year, and that only about 19 percent of sick people survived. However, five years later, they died.
The scientists found that drinking 700 ml drinks (about three cups) every day or more at a higher temperature (60°C or hotter) would have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer, compared with people drinking the same cups at temperature below 60℃.
This is not the first report showing a person drinking very hot drinks has the risk of cancer. In 2022, the World Health Organization showed a report. It found that drinking very hot drinks of any kind could increase the risk of cancer.
1.Why does the writer advise people not to drink very hot drinks?

One day, I told Sam I regretted (后悔) never traveling abroad to know better about the world before working. Sam decided to learn German in Berlin, even though his friends thought it was meaningless.
The night before he was to leave, I failed to say any words again. Maybe, I thought, it wasn’t necessary to say anything.
What does it matter if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? But as I stood before Sam, I knew it does matter. My father and I loved each other. However, I always regretted never hearing him put his feelings into words.
“Sam,” I said, “if I could have picked, I would have picked you.” I wasn’t sure he understood what I meant. Sam came towards me and threw his arms around me, saying “thank you”. My eyes misted over (模糊). Then, the moment ended, and Sam left home.

14.(23-24八年级下·浙江台州·期中)In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us.
Or can they? A new TV show gives us a new look at plants. Shown on Jan.10 on Bilibili, it tells the secret lives of plants, and the wonderful and unbelievable ways that plants work.
▲ . In the rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” (战场). Only two percent of the sunlight gets through it. Have you ever realized that you’re dreaming in the middle of a dream? If this happens during a night mare, you can wake yourself up. If it happens during a common dream, you can decide what to dream about next. Want to fly? Go right ahead! People call this type of experience a lucid dream.
Some people have lucid dreams naturally, while others need to practise. The key to lucid dreaming is realizing that you are in a dream. To do that, most people need a “reality check”. One way of checking is to look at a clock or words on a page, look away, and then look back again. In a dream, words and numbers are often unclear, or change completely.
A lot of lucid dreaming devices promise an easy way to lucid dreams. These devices play sounds or shine red lights as reality checks. If these sounds or red lights appear in the dream, the user may realize, “Hey, I’m dreaming!”
Unluckily, a scientific report of lucid dreaming devices found that none of them were reliable. For example, the Remee lucid dreaming mask was popular on Kickstarter when it came out in 2012. But many people complained that it didn’t work. They didn’t have lucid dreams, and didn’t remember seeing any red lights. Another device, the $299 Aurora headband, which can record brain-waves as well as body movements, also made people unsatisfied.
What do you think? Have you ever had a lucid dream? Would you want to try a lucid dreaming device? Or are these devices just a lie?
1.What type of experience can be called a lucid dream?
A.Dream about keeping flying in the sky. B.Decide what to dream about in a dream.
C.Realize you had a dream after waking up. D.Have an unpleasant dream during the night.
2.According the passage, which picture is one way of checking the reality?
A. B. C. D.
3.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Most people need to practise hard to have lucid dreams.
B.Sounds and red lights are sure to appear in lucid dreams.
C.Reality check helps people know if they are in lucid dreams.
D.Remee lucid dreaming mask was popular because it worked well.
4.The underlined word “reliable” probably means ________.
A.safe B.cheap C.useful D.popular
5.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Some good suggestions on having lucid dreams.
B.Different kinds of reality check for lucid dreams.
C.The introduction of lucid dreams and the devices.
D.Opinions on buying lucid dreaming devices or not.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.C 5.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了什么是清醒梦,以及清醒梦设备并不可靠。
1.细节理解题。根据第一段“If it happens during a common dream, you can decide what to dream about next. Want to fly? Go right ahead! People call this type of experience a lucid dream.”可知,如果它发生在一个普通的梦中,你可以决定下一步做什么梦。想飞吗?继续!人们把这种体验称为清醒梦。即决定在梦中做什么是清醒的梦。故选B。
2.推理判断题。根据第二段“One way of checking is to look at a clock or words on a page, look away, and then look back again. In a dream, words and numbers are often unclear, or change completely.”可知,检查的一种方法是看一个时钟或一页纸上的单词,移开视线,然后再回头看,在梦中,单词和数字经常不清楚,或者完全改变。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据第二段“The key to lucid dreaming is realizing that you are in a dream. To do that, most people need a ‘reality check’.”可知,清醒梦的关键是意识到你在梦中,要做到这一点,大多数人需要“现实检查”。即现实检查帮助人们知道自己是否在清醒梦中。故选C。
4.词义猜测题。根据第四段“For example, the Remee lucid dreaming mask was popular on Kickstarter when it came out in 2012. But many people complained that it didn’t work. They didn’t have lucid dreams, and didn’t remember seeing any red lights”可知,例如, 2012年推出的Remee清醒梦面罩在Kickstarter上很受欢迎,但许多人抱怨它不起作用,他们没有清醒梦,也不记得看到过什么红灯。由这个例子可知“none of them were reliable”与“it didn’t work不起作用”表达的意思相近,所以reliable与useful意思相近。故选C。
5.主旨大意题。根据全文可知,本文主要介绍了什么是清醒梦,以及清醒梦设备并不可靠。即本文是清醒梦和设备的介绍。故选C。

19.(23-24八年级下·山东济南·期中)Did you know that a seed (种子) can have its own “identity card (身份证)”? The “card” shows that the seed is at the national crop germplasm bank (国家作物种质库) in Beijing, known as China’s seed bank.
A seed’s journey to the seed bank starts with a census (普查). China’s latest census of agricultural seeds started in 2021 and ended in January this year, reported CCTV News. Workers collected more than 139,000 new seeds from all over the country. They then arrived at the seed bank.
When seeds first come in, they each get a number for their “physical examination” (检测). For example, workers put all kinds of Job’s tears (薏米) from different farms together. Then they put them into groups according to the seeds’ look or taste.
Next, workers check the seeds to make sure they’re healthy and all the unhealthy ones are given up. A worker at the seed bank showed CCTV News a seed that had a large insect (虫子) inside it. “A seed like this should not be saved,” he said.
With the bad seeds gone, researchers then test the good ones to see how likely they are to grow. The seed bank has a quick, smart way of doing this: Workers test the seeds and use the information they get to predict (预测) their growth. Workers dry and weigh the best seeds after several tests. Then, they’re stored in a super cold freezer (冰箱) at -18 ℃.
China’s seed bank keeps all the seed information safe and helps people learn about them. This can help develop new plants that can grow better and deal well with hard environments, ensuring the food security (安全) of the country.

Come on, Amy. You must TRY HARDER. Amy told herself silently. She was in her class’ Second-Day-of-School Game with her teammates, whom she only met yesterday. This was her first chance to make new friends, and she was nervous.
So far Amy hadn’t given any useful suggestions—after all, she was totally new to this town. Luckily, no one seemed to care about it. This relaxed her a lot.
Since the Blue Team left the park, they had worked out the first two clues (线索) and had been to the post office. Now they were in front of the cinema.
Henry was reading aloud the third clue: Go to our town founder’s last resting place.
I know THIS ONE! Amy thought, excited.
“To the cemetery (墓地)” Cindy said.
“No, wait!” Amy said. “I’ve read about it. The founder was buried (安葬) near the library."
“Wow. I’ve walked by every day,” Tyler said. “Never knew that!”
“Good job! That will save valuable time, ” Cindy smiled at Amy.
“We still need to hurry,” Tyler reminded, pointing to the Yellow Team coming near.
“I know a shortcut!” Henry suggested. “Follow me!” No one moved.
“No, seriously,” Henry said. “You know I’m always running late. I know every shortcut in town.” The others finally agreed.
A few sharp turns, and they were there! This time Amy read the clue aloud: Now go to the place where the football is running around!
“The football stadium!” They called out together and started to run…
Now they’d got the final clue: Look where you’ve been, see where you are. Use your map wisely and you’ll be a star!
Looking closely at the map, everyone thought hard.
“Aha! A star!” Cindy suddenly broke the silence. She quickly took out a pencil.
As they watched her drawing lines on the map, everyone understood.
They began running back to where they started. They were closer and closer, and finally crossed the finish line—just one step behind the Red Team!
“So…close…” Tyer made a face, and they all laughed together.
“Nice job, new girl,” Cindy gave Amy a high-five.
“That was really fun,” said Henry. “I hope we’ll be on the same team soon.”
“Me, too.” Amy agreed, smiling.

(A= Paragraph 1)
A. B. C. D.
1.What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A.The land, the air and the water. B.People.
C.Rivers and lakes. D.Factories.
2.What does the fifth paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Problems. B.Ways. C.Advantages. D.Effects.
3.How is the text organized?
(①=Paragraph1,②=Paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Modern Man and the Earth B.Environmental Problems
C.The Changes on the Earth D.The Future of the Earth
A.Soft materials may expand in size.
B.Rome was not build in a day.
C.One should look at the problem in two ways.
D.Provide for a rainy day.

11.(23-24八年级下·辽宁葫芦岛·期中)Young people enjoy different kinds of drinks (饮料), though they know how bad drinks are for their health. What will happen to you if water takes the place of all drinks?
Chris Bailey, a popular blogger (博客作者), tried this out. Here are the advantages (优点) that he has found about drinking water.
First, you lose weight (体重) faster. You don’t have to exercise but just keep away from drinks for 9 days. So water is very important. It is the same as running for 8 kilometers a day! So write down your resolution on a piece of paper and put it on the wall. And you will see the result soon.
Sometimes when you have to stay up late for a test, you may drink a cup of tea or coffee. But do you know 75 to 85 percent of your brain (大脑) is water? Nothing else! Just by drinking water, your brain can work efficiently. You may remember things quickly.
What’s more, water washes out something bad in your body. So drinking enough water can stop you from getting old soon. If you want to look young and beautiful, drink water right now! Keep on doing it for longer, and you will be surprised to touch your soft and clean skin (皮肤).
Lastly, you save money! The price of water is much lower than that of other drinks. Drink enough water every day, or spend money visiting doctors. Think about it!

13.(23-24八年级下·浙江金华·期中)In a few hours Sam would be flying to Germany. We looked at each other but no sound broke the silence (寂静) of my beach-side house.
Such a moment was not the first time for me. On Sam’s first day of kindergarten (幼儿园), I felt his stress (压力) when holding his hand. He looked at me—as he did now. But I said nothing till the school bus came. About ten years later, I drove him to the college. He was sick but I didn’t know then. I thought he was just too tired. I tried to think of something to say as he would start a new period of life. Again, ________.
Sam was weak when he was born but grew into a strong boy. Then he became the best baseball player in high school. His finest moment came when he got the first prize at a science fair. I was sorry he gave up his athletic talent, but proud (自豪的) that later he chose English literature.
What I had said to Sam was not new. It was nothing. But, it was everything.

Some plants spread (蔓延) their big leaves to reach light. But other plants may catch them up and get a lift. Finally, they are both overtaken (超过) by a fast-growing tree. Similarly, some trees may give out something to protect themselves.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, if a tree finds water, it will share it with others. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease (疾病), it can tell nearby plants about it.
The TV show not only makes us amazed at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the needs of all life, including ourselves. 15.(23-24八年级下·山东潍坊·期中)This Spring Festival, the most eye-catching movie might be YOLO (热辣滚烫). So far, it has made over 3.3 billion yuan at the box office.
Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing. The name YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea —you only live once.
Jia has tried many different roles in her life, including crosstalk (相声) and sketch (小品) performer, variety show (综艺节目) guest and actress. It was in 2019 that she became a director for the first time, making her movie Hi, Mom. Jia didn’t study directing at university. She believes this is both a good and bad thing. Before making YOLO, Jia was seen as an overweight comedian (肥胖的喜剧演员). She often made jokes about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost 50kg and looked very different. Some people online said even her voice seemed softer, and they call this a “rebirth” for Jia.
In Jia’s eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of staying true to herself. “It’s hard to predict one’s life. I’m just following my heart but not looking for changes on purpose. Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my energy into them.” She said.

Experts say poor people around the world will suffer most in the future unless environmental damage is stopped. They say more should be done to balance (平衡) human and environmental needs.
The world’s population is now over 7 billion, and it is expected to increase to about 9.3 billion by the year 2050. Since water supplies (供给) and lands are heavily used, more than 4 billion people will be living in countries that cannot meet people’s daily needs in 50 years. However, people in developed countries are using much more of the world’s resources than people in developing countries. So international laws are needed to improve poor conditions, promote (促进) social development and protect the environment.
