Jimmy is an automotive mechanic (汽修工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He has good heart, but always feared applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said,“Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please. I insist.” Jimmy agreed.
Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applications waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease (润滑油) on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself.
Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.
“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and they shared a cup of well-deserved coffee as he landed himself a new job.
4. What did Jimmy see on the way to the interview?
A. A friend’s car had a flat tyre. B. A wild man was pushing a car.
C A terrible car accident happened. D. An old man’s car broke down.
5. Why did the old man offer Jimmy a ride?
A. He was also to be interviewed. B. He needed a traveling companion.
C. He always helped people in need. D. He was thankful to Jimmy.
6. How did Jimmy feel on hearing the interviewer’s question?
A. He was sorry for the other applicants.
B. There was no hope for him to get the job.
C. He regretted helping the old man.
D. The interviewer was very rude.
7. What can we learn from Jimmy’s experience?
A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. Good is rewarded with good. D. Two heads are better than one.

Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.
Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply.
That is partly because people are driving more, but Mark Rosekind, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said distracted(分心)driving was "only increasing, unfortunately."
"Big change requires big ideas." he said in a speech last month referring broadly to the need to improve road safety. So to try to change a distinctly modern behavior, lawmakers and public health experts are reaching back to an old approach: They want to treat distracted driving like drunk driving.
An idea from lawmakers in New York is to give police officers a new device called the Textalyzer. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of a crash could ask for the phones of the drivers and use the Textalyzer to check in the operating system for recent activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.
"We need something on the books that can change people's behavior,” said Félix W. Ortiz, who pushed for the state's 2001 ban on hand-held devices by drivers. If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone."
8. Which of the following best describes the ban on drivers' texting in the US?
A. Ineffective. B. Unnecessary.
C. Inconsistent. D. Unfair.
9. What can the Textalyzer help a police officer find out?
A. Where a driver came from. B. Whether a driver used their phone.
C. How fast a driver was going. D. When a driver arrived at the scene.
10. What does the underlined word "something" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Advice. B. Data. C. Tests. D. Laws.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. To Drive or Not to Drive? Think Before You Start
B. Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer
C. New York Banning Hand-Held Devices by Drivers.
D. The Next Generation Cell Phone: The Textalyzer.

As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
12. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
A. The right way of exercising. B. The causes of a heart attack.
C The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart.
13. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Diet plan. B. Professional background.
C. Exercise type. D. Previous physical condition.
14. What does Levine’s research find?
A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
15. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.

A Gift of Gold
It was the winter of 1937, just after Christmas. The Depression (大萧条时期) was still going on, but I was in good spirits. I was going to graduate from elementary school, but my mother still dressed me in shorts. Most of my classmates had given up wearing shorts. For the graduation ceremony, all the boys were expected to dress white shirts and dark-blue wool pants (裤子).
I waited until a week before I told my mother. On a cold Monday afternoon I went home from school.
“Mom,” I said, about graduation…”
“Yes?” she answered.
“They are going to give me the first-prize medal,” I said.
Still working over the stove, she looked over her shoulder at me and smiled broadly. “That’s wonderful, Baby. Dad and I will both be there, and we’ll be the proudest in the place.”
She must have seen by the look on my face that something was wrong. She turned her back and said, “So?”
“So, I have to get long pants,” I said.
“Baby, we don’t have the money for new pants right now,” she said.
“Okay,” I burst out. “Then I won’t go to graduation. Plus, I’m running away from home!”
“If I were you, I wouldn’t pack my bags. We’ll solve the pants problem somehow,” she said.
The following Saturday, when my mother said, “Let’s go shopping,” I knew that she had solved the problem. Then we left home. We took the trolley (有轨电车) and got off at Southern Boulevard, the best shopping street. Our clothing store was just a couple of blocks away.
But first we walked a short way down the Boulevard and stopped at a place I had never noticed before.
“Wait here,” she said. Then she opened the door with the hand with a gold wedding ring on her ring finger and entered a storefront (店面) that looked like a bank.
She went out about ten minutes later with a purse in her left hand, and then we went to the pants store. I chose a pair of pants. After a patient bargain with the seller, my mother bought it at the price of three dollars and fifty cents and handed it to me.
注意:1, 续写词数应为150左右;
I was holding the pants tightly under my arm when my mother went to pay the money.

With the question in my mind, we took the trolley (有轨电车) back home.

C. A terrible car accident happened.
D 5. D 6. B 7. C

根据第二段中“While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car(在等公交车去办公室接受面试的时候,他看见一位老人疯狂地踢着他的汽车轮胎。很明显那辆车出了问题)”可知,吉米在去面试的路上看到一位老人的汽车抛锚了。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please. I insist.”
根据第三段中“The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself.(面试官坐在一张面向办公室窗户的大椅子上。他前后摇晃着椅子,问道:‘真的需要接受采访吗?’吉米的心一沉。‘以我现在的样子,我怎么可能通过这次面试呢?’他想。)”可知,听到面试官的问题时,Jimmy认为以自己当时的状态,不可能通过面试,没有希望获得那份工作。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其根据倒数第二段“Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.(然后面试官把椅子转过来,让吉米吃惊的是,原来是他早上帮助过的那位老人。原来他是这家公司的总经理。)”以及最后一段中““Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!”(‘对不起,让你久等了,但在你走进办公室之前,我就很确定让你成为我们的一员是正确的决定。我只知道你是个值得信赖的员工。恭喜你!’)”可知,文章讲述了Jimmy在应聘途中无偿地帮助的老人正是他去面试公司的总经理,而后他被提供了那份工作。从这个故事中我们不难认识到:善有善报(Good is rewarded with good)。故选C。

"Big change requires big ideas." he said in a speech last month, referring broadly to the need to improve road safety.
B Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer
C. New York Banning Hand-Held Devices by Drivers.
D. The Next Generation Cell Phone: The Textalyzer.
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第一段中“Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.”(在过去的七年里,大多数州都禁止司机发短信,公共服务活动也尝试了各种各样的方法来说服人们在开车时放下手机。)以及第二段中“Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse.”(然而,无论以何种标准衡量,这个问题似乎都在恶化。) 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.”(这项技术可以确定司机是否发了短信、发了邮件,或者做了纽约免提驾驶法不允许的其他事情。)
根据句中的“We need something on the books that can change people's behavior.”(我们需要一些能改变人们行为的东西,)可知,something是能够改变人们的行为的事情。根据下文的“If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone.”(他说,如果Textalyzer法案成为法律,“人们会更害怕拿起手机。)可知,人们的行为会改变的条件是当Textalyzer法案成为法律。受到法律的约束和惩罚,司机们才不会在开车的时候使用手机。故something指代的是法律。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。纵观全文,第一段和第二段阐述的是“虽然大多数州已经尝试了各种各样的方法来说服人们在开车时放下手机。可是问题却越来越严重”。第三段中“That is partly because people are driving more.”(部分原因是开车的人越来越多)可知,解释了该行为产生的部分原因。 Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer(发短信还是在开车?
D
C. The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart.
13. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Diet plan. B. Professional background.
C. Exercise type. D. Previous physical condition.
14. What does Levine’s research find?
A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
15. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
D 13. C 14. A 15. C

Simple ways to improve your written English
Many people think it is really difficult to improve (提高) their writing in English. Don’t worry, though. Here are some simple steps that you can take to improve your written English.
● Increase your vocabulary.
To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly. ___16___
Tip: When you learn a new word, try to learn all the forms of that word.
● ___17___
People often say that we learn to write best by reading. Reading in English is useful in many ways. It is a great way to get an idea of the different styles of writing and see how to use words properly.
Tip: ___18___ Learning shouldn’t be boring. Read each text several times to make sure you understand how to use new words and expressions in the text.
● Improve your grammar.
Grammar is very important because it improves the quality (质量) of your writing.
Tip: ___19___ The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.
● Just do it!
The best way to improve your writing is to get a pen and paper and write. Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text. ___20___
A. Know your readers.
B. Read widely and often.
C. Always check your writing twice.
D. Remember, practice makes perfect!
E. Choose books or articles that interest you.
F. Use simpler language and shorter sentences to show your ideas.
G. Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.
G 17. B 18. E 19. C 20. D
That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly.(这不仅仅是能够知道很多单词,这意味着能够正确地使用它们)可知,G项Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.(通过例句学习新单词,而不仅仅是单词表)符合文意。选项G中的new words与标题中的vocabulary以及与上句中的lots of words呼应,并且选项G中的doing this可与use them correctly形成指代关系。
Reading in English is useful in many ways.(读英语在很多方面是很有用的)可知,这个小标题强调读英语的重要性。
Choose books or articles that interest you.(选择你感兴趣的书或文章)符合文意。
The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.(第一次,找出一般的错误,第二次,找出你正在学习的语法点的错误)可知,此处指写完后要检查两遍。 选项C中的“twice”可与其中的“The first time…the second time”呼应,故选C。
Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text.(准备好写几遍的打算)及本段的小标题Just do it!(就这么干吧!)

But first we walked a short way down the Boulevard and stopped at a place I had never noticed before
“Wait here,” she said.
注意:1, 续写词数应为150左右;
I was holding the pants tightly under my arm when my mother went to pay the money.

I was holding the pants tightly under my arm when my mother went to pay the money. I saw her take a tiny brown envelope from her purse, tear the sealed envelope open and remove the contents. There were four brand-new one-dollar bills inside. She carefully unfolded them and handed them to the seller. The seller gave my mother the fifty cents change. Feeling greatly curious, how did she manage to get such a large sum of money? Maybe my parents found new jobs with a higher salary.
With the question in my mind, we took the trolley back home. Sitting next to my mother on the trolley, I had the window seat and looked out. I even imagined Father had come home early and prepared a wonderful meal. About halfway home, I glanced down at my mother's hands folded across her purse, which was resting on her lap. It was then that I saw the gold wedding ring that had always encircled her ring finger on her left hand was no longer there. Deeply moved by what my mum had done, I truly understood everything and embraced my mum tightly, with tears rolling down.
