Waikiki Beach This famous two-mile stretch of sand is home to scores of family-friendly beach hotels and all kinds of action-packed excitement.Waikiki Beach is the perfect place to go if you're looking for warm ocean water and golden beaches.Kids will enjoy walking along the beach, stopping for shaved ice or an ice cream and taking a dip in a safe area of the ocean. Polynesian Cultural Center Nothing appeals to the whole family like Hawaiian past coming alive.Besides, the colourful costumes, lively songs, and traditional dances in the Pacific region are presented here. You'll see customs of Fiji, New Zealand, Marquesas, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and Hawaii all represented in Polynesian Cultural Center's recreated island villages, which is decorated with palm trees and tropical gardens. My editorial team leader died recently after a short illness. He was 31.The news was so unexpected that it left us all shocked and upset.A female colleague burst into tears and cried sadly at her desk.Somehow, we got through the day's work. The next day was the funeral. Our big boss stepped forward to deliver a eulogy(悼词) and was soon in tears. She carried on, in Chinese of course, but at the end said in English: “There will be no more deadlines for you in heaven.” Next came a long-term colleague who also dissolved in tears but carried on with her speech despite being almost overcome by emotion. Then a close friend of the dead man paid tribute, weeping openly as he spoke. Sorrow is spreading.Men and women were now sobbing uncontrollably. Finally, the man's mother, supported between two women, addressed her son in his coffin. She almost collapsed and had to be held up.We were invited to step forward to each lay a white rose on the casket. Our dead colleague looked as if he was taking a nap.At the end of the service I walked away from the funeral stunned at the outpouring of emotion. In the UK, families grieve privately and then try to hold it together and not break down at a funeral. Here in China it would seem that grieving is a public affair. It strikes me that it is more releasing to cry your eyes out than try to keep it bottled up for fear of embarrassment, which is what many of us do in the West. Afterwards, a Chinese colleague told me that the lamenting(哀悼) at the funeral had been restrained(克制) by Chinese standards. In some rural areas, she said, people used to be paid to mourn noisily. This struck me like something out of novel by Charles Dickens. But we have all seen on TV scenes of grief-stricken people in Gaza and the West Bank, in Afghanistan, Iraq and the relatives of victims of terrorist bombings around the world.Chinese grief is no different.I realized that it's the reserved British way of mourning that is out of step with the rest of the world. 语篇导读 主题语境:人与社会/不同民族文化习俗。本文为记叙文,讲述了作者亲身经历的一场中国葬礼,对比了中英两国在表达哀悼情感上的文化差异,展现了个人的观察、感受与思考。 4.What do the underlined words “stiff upper lip style” mean? D.The boss's speech was best thought of. 答案 B 解析 细节理解题。根据第三段末句可知,作者对葬礼上的场景感到震惊,故选B项。 6.What can be implied from the passage? A.The English might cry noisily for the dead in Dickens' time. Recently, Huangmei Opera “Female Consort Prince” became a hit on short video platforms. The interactive platforms are expanding the charm of the traditional opera among young people.Peking Opera was also well-received on short video platforms thanks to a series of augmented reality (AR) effects.Users love to film short videos with a set of virtual facial makeup, headwear and costumes.Data indicate that these effects were applied by more than 18 million users, most of whom were young. In addition to Chinese operas, intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) items, such as embroidery, paper-cutting, printing and dyeing, shadow play works, oiled paper umbrella making, and bamboo weaving are also actively promoted on short video platforms. In a word, short video platforms are becoming an important channel to display China's intangible cultural heritage. Generations of stone carvers in Chimalhuacan also created much of the stonework found on buildings and in parks in the capital's downtown. While carvers in other areas long ago turned to machines, the workers here only use hammers and other special hand tools. Many are self-taught, but some, like Tomás Ugarte, aged 86, learned in the traditional way. This method of rock cutting has been passed down between family members, dating back about five generations. The rock cutters are generally old. There were about 600 official stone carvers about 10 years ago. Now, there are probably only around 300.The carvers are dying and their children generally do not want to take up the trade. Still, the stone carvers keep the old traditions alive. Many people in the area use stone tools made by the stone carvers. Rev.Alberto Sandoval, who has known the stone workers since 1990, described them as “the backbone of the community”. Most of the carvers have work areas at home, which provides them with some money. They sell carvings for prices from $500 to $2,000.But they often do not sell much. Unlike many craftspeople who want to see their works shown in museums, the carvers here also work for free at repairing the stonework at the 250-year-old local church, Santa Maria de Guadalupe. Asked if the trade will continue, carver Mario Olivares read a poem written on the church wall: “Your art, your tradition, your culture and the nobility(高贵) of the people keep the spirit of this town alive.” 12.What is special about the stone carvers in Chimalhuacan?
