My love of antiques(古董) has been going on for years. So the other day when I drove past an old house in the country and saw a homemade sign that read, “ANTIQUES FOR SALE”,I stopped.A young man was in charge of the sale.“We're cleaning out Grandpa's house before we sell the farm,” he said.“Getting rid of all this old stuff(东西).”
The “old stuff” was wonderful:several old chairs with cane seats, a walnut drop-leaf table, two weathered wooden stepladders, and an old hooked carpet in excellent condition.I was attracted but then—hurrah!—in the corner of an upstairs bedroom, I found a small bookcase filled with old books.
Something about the sight of old books pulls me like a magnet(磁铁), and old books of poetry are especially attractive.Around the turn of the last century, the best gift one could give a friend was a book of poetry by Shelley or Shakespeare, Bryant or Burns.Sure enough, there was a lovely, old, published-in-London book with gold lettering on a deep-blue cover: “The Poetical Works of Robert Burns”.The illustrations were quaint(古色古香的) and charming. One of the poems was, of course, “Auld Lang Syne”.I would have paid much more, but the price was $1.
Back home, I put my purchase in the basket beside my favorite chair.I like to scatter a few old books of poetry around the house—one or two beside my chair, one on the kitchen counter to scan while I wait for something to cook, and one on my bedside table.
Old books of poetry are full of wisdom—the easy-to-digest kind. Some are like self-help books, but their advice is condensed—no wasted wordage. Some are praises to dear friends; some describe the beauty in life with words that are beautiful to read.Joseph Roux, a 19th-century French poet, once said, “Poetry is truth in its Sunday clothes.”
I love this lovely old book.It was cherished(珍爱) by someone long ago; now it's my turn to read and enjoy it.

The sonnet was introduced into English poetry by Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elder and Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, during the first half of the sixteenth century. It originated, however, in Italy three centuries earlier, with the earliest examples known being those of Giacomo da Lentini, a Sicilian poet. The form was taken up by the two most famous poets of the Italian Renaissance, Dante Alighieri and Francesco Petrarch, and indeed the latter is regarded as the master of the form.
The Petrarchan sonnet form in English poetry includes fourteen lines. Each line is ten syllables long and divided into five pairs of syllables. In each pair, the first syllable is unstressed and the second stressed. This can be seen if we look at the first line of one of William Wordsworth's sonnets, After-Thought: “I thought of Thee, my partner and my guide”.If we break down this line into its syllabic parts, we can see the five pairs and the stress pattern(in this example each stressed syllable is underlined), thus: “I thought/of Thee/my part/ner and/my guide.”
The rhyme scheme for the Petrarchan sonnet is equally as strict. The poem is generally divided into two parts, the octave(8 lines) and the sestet(6 lines).
Early on, however, English poets began to vary and experiment with this structure. The first major development was made by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and was taken up and perfected by William Shakespeare. The Shakespearean sonnet also has fourteen lines with each line containing five pairs of syllables, but rather than the division into the octave and sestet, the poem is made up of three quatrains(四行诗) and a final rhyming couplet(对句).And each quatrain has its own rhyme scheme; thus a Shakespearean sonnet would rhyme abab cdcd efef gg.Such a structure naturally allows poets greater freedom to develop ideas.
These, then, are the two standard forms of the sonnet in English poetry, but it should be recognized that poets rarely follow rules exactly and a number of other sonnet types have been developed.

In late 2021, The Road of Tang Poetry, a book co-authored by Nobel Prize-winning French novelist Le Clézio and Professor Dong Qiang, was published by People's Literature Publishing House in China. This book also represents a practice of cross-cultural dialogue.
Le Clézio regards the Tang Dynasty as the golden age of Chinese poetry.Due to their efforts, Le Clézio and Dong simplified complex issues and broke time and space limitations to examine five outstanding poets from the Tang era.
Nature, women, and wine are themes of common concern to Chinese and foreign poets alike.Influenced by European poetic traditions, Le Clézio was amazed the first time he read Li Bai's Sitting Alone in Face of Peak Jingting. The peace and harmony when the man is alone with nature, as conveyed in the poem, deeply impressed Le Clézio, who loves nature deeply. The poem even inspired him to look for his own “Mountain Jingting”,where he could sit facing its peak like Li Bai and lose himself in nature. In addition to Li Bai, other Tang poets, such as Du Fu, Bai Juyi, and Zhang Ruoxu, also highly praised nature through poetry.Like them, foreign poets like British and German Romantic poets sang nature's praises.
When trying to understand Chinese poetry, Westerners must have “windows” through which to read. For example, due to insufficient knowledge of Chinese language and culture, French poet Judith Gautier relied heavily on her Chinese teacher Ding Dunling to explain the Chinese texts when she was translating classical Chinese poetry.
The path of spreading Tang poetry through joint efforts made by Chinese and French scholars should be an energetic, inclusive stream of poetry that welcomes mutual learning, as a saying suggests, “Poetry is a stream that continually flows.”

Mindful Imagery
Most writing forms attempt to explain something—a scene, a situation, an idea, a set of instructions, an experience. 2 It shows. It paints a picture and pulls you into it.When you master the art of showing readers an idea through imagery, you can easily apply the concept to your other writing.
Language, Word Choice, and Vocabulary
Of course, language is essential to all types of writing, but in poetry, words must be selected carefully in order to generate a visceral(发自肺腑的) response from readers. This is achieved by learning how to use language that evokes(唤起) emotions without telling readers what they should be feeling. 3
Musicality
A poet must be constantly aware of meter and rhythm.Think about how you feel when you hear a particular piece of music. You tap your feet and shake your hips. Our bodies respond physically to music. 4 When this musicality is brought to other forms of writing, readers feel it in their bones and muscles. They will have a physical reaction.
5 And poetry writing helps you develop skills for connecting with readers mentally(language), emotionally(images), and physically(rhythm).Whether you apply poetic concepts to fiction, blogging, or article writing, your engagement with poetry will help you produce better writing.
A.Poetry doesn't bother to explain.
B.Writing is about connecting with readers.
C.Poetry is not a favorite form of writing for many.
D.Every single word must be necessary to the poem.
E.But poetry is like music and there's something for everyone.
