GEORGE ANSWERS YOUR HEALTH QUESTIONS I have such a terrible time falling asleep every night that I’m always tired and it’s affecting my schoolwork. What should I do? — Mindy in Nevada One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you’re not alone. Getting enough sleep has become as important as eating vegetables and exercising regularly. It’s very important for your body. Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping in on weekends doesn’t really work. In fact, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm than good, if you have sleep problems. What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? If your sleep problem continues for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory. Worse still, if your sleep difficulties last a long time, that could lead to anxiety or depression. Therefore, you’ve got to have some healthy sleep habits. Below are some suggestions: ●Go to bed at the same time — including weekends, if possible. ●Wake up around the same time every morning. When you sleep late just one morning during the week, it may disturb your body clock. This will make it hard for you to sleep that night. ●Do something relaxing before going to bed. ●Exercise during the day. Don’t exercise right before going to bed. ●Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol makes you excited, which prevents you from falling asleep or wakes you up during the night. ●Don't smoke. Smoking is always bad for the body. Smoking before bedtime keeps you awake. If trying these tips over a couple of weeks does not help you, speak to your doctor. Do not take any sleeping pills without first asking your doctor. Many have strong side effects. 36. ________ young people have sleep problems. A. 10% B. 20% C. 25% D. 50% 37. John and I spotted in a store was different from the others. It was thick, soft and well preserved, with a black velvet collar, beautiful tailoring (剪裁), and a Fifth Avenue label at an unbelievable price: MYM28 (171yuan). I looked at my son and we both said nothing, but John’s eyes gleamed Dark, woolen topcoats were popular with teenage boys, but they could cost several hundred dollars. This coat was even better. John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror. The fit was perfect. He wore the coat to school the next day and came home with a grin. “Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it.” he said. Over the next few weeks, John changed. He was polite, less argumentative, more thoughtful, and overall much happier. “Good dinner, Mum,” he would say every evening. Without a word of objection (反对) he would carry in wood for the stove. One day when I suggested that he might start on his homework before dinner, John, who always put things off, said, “You’ re right. I guess I will.” When I mentioned this to one of his teachers, she joked that the coat must have changed him. John and I both know that clothes do not define (给……下定义) a person, but there is something to be said for looking good. Sometimes, watching John leave for school, I’ve remembered what it felt like to be in the eighth grade — a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to life as it is to try on a coat. Sometimes, watching John leave for school, I’ve remembered what it felt like to be in the eighth grade — a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to life as it is to try on a coat. The whole future is stretched out ahead, where all the doors are open. And if I were there right now, I would picture myself walking through those doors wearing my wonderful, magical coat.(John和我都知道,衣服并不能定义一个人,但看起来不错是有道理的。 故选A。 根据第二段“This coat was even better. John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror. The fit was perfect.(这件外套更好。 根据划线词后文““Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it.” he said.(“孩子们喜欢你的外套吗?” 根据第四段“One day when I suggested that he might start on his homework before dinner, John, who always put things off, said, “You’ re right. I guess I will.” When I mentioned this to one of his teachers, she joked that the coat must have changed him.(有一天,当我建议他在晚饭前开始做作业时,总是拖延John说:“你说得对。我想我会的。”当我把这件事告诉他的一位老师时,她开玩笑说这件外套一定改变了他)”可知,John穿了新外套后,他愿意听从别人的建议。故选C。 【45题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“And if I were there right now, I would picture myself walking through those doors wearing my wonderful, magical coat.(如果我现在在那里,我会想象自己穿着那件神奇的外套走进那些门)”可知当我们穿着自己喜欢的衣服的时候,我们就会变得更好。 C Weekend getaways (短假) and romantic dinners used to be sweet escapes from the daily working life. Nowadays, vacations are often interrupted by the ding of an instant message on a wireless laptop. That's not news to modern workers, many of whom may just be getting back from a long winter break during which they worked more than in years past. One-fifth of Americans carry a laptop on vacation. Countless more carry cell phones, many of which can be used to check company e-mail. And why not? With wireless coverage extending, staying connected is simple. Recently, Jet Blue Airways announced a trial of free e-mail and instant messaging services for passengers on one of its aircraft. Other airlines are expected to follow suit. But there's a hidden cost to companies: employee burnout, using work cell phones and checking company e-mail at the poolside is not a vacation. “If I were a manager, I would insist that my employees leave their cell phones at work during their vacation and not check their e-mail while away,” said Dov Eden, an organizational psychologist. “In the long run, the employee will be better rested and better able to perform his or her job.” A nine-year study of more than 12,000 middle-aged men at high risk of heart disease showed that participants who vacationed more had a lower risk of dying than the vacation-deprived (剥夺的). In a nationwide survey, nearly half of the 2,000 adults questioned said stress has increased in the past five years, with 75 percent ranking money and work as the leading causes of stress. One way to beat work stress could be to work from home or another remote location. This alternative work arrangement is a win-win set-up (体制). Telecommuting (远程办公) has an overall beneficial effect, because the arrangement provides employees with more control over how they do their work. Telecommuters reported more job satisfaction, less stress and improved work-family balance. 46. According to the first paragraph, Americans carry a cell phone or a laptop on vacation mainly to ________. A. entertain themselves B. keep in touch with their family C. check company emails D. tell their managers about their experiences 47. What does the underlined phrase “employee burnout” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Employees become very angry. B. Employees demand a pay rise. C. Employees leave the company. D. Employees get extremely tired. 48. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________. A. companies have more control over telecommuters B. telecommuting is good for both companies and employees C. telecommuting can reduce the company's stress D. employees will work more slowly if they work at home 49. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. In the past, people on vacation were seldom interrupted by work. B. Dov Eden agrees with Jet Blue Airways' announcement. C. Many airlines have been providing their passengers with instant messaging service. D. All people are under stress because they have no vacation to relax. 50. What would be the best title for the passage? A. How to Spend Your Holidays B. The Modern Vacation: Fully Wired, Totally Ruined C. Modern Life with Cell Phones D. Telecommuting — a Win-win Set-up 【答案】46. C 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. 根据第一段的句子“One-fifth of Americans carry a laptop on vacation. Countless more carry cell phones, many of which can be used to check company e-mail.(五分之一的美国人在度假时携带笔记本电脑。 根据最后一段的句子“This alternative work arrangement is a win-win set-up. Telecommuting has an overall beneficial effect, because the arrangement provides employees with more control over how they do their work. Telecommuters reported more job satisfaction, less stress and improved work-family balance.(这种替代性的工作安排是一种双赢的安排。远程办公总的来说是有益的,因为这种安排使员工对自己的工作方式有了更多的控制权。远程办公者的工作满意度更高,压力更小,工作与家庭的平衡也更好。)”可知,远程办公对公司和员工都有利。故选B项。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段的句子“Weekend getaways (短假) and romantic dinners used to be sweet escapes from the daily working life. Nowadays, vacations are often interrupted by the ding of an instant message on a wireless laptop.(周末度假和浪漫晚餐曾经是逃离日常工作生活的甜蜜方式。现在,假期经常被无线笔记本电脑上的即时消息打断。)”可知,过去人们在度假时很少被工作打断。故选A项。 根据全文内容,特别是第一段的句子“Weekend getaways (短假) and romantic dinners used to be sweet escapes from the daily working life. Nowadays, vacations are often interrupted by the ding of an instant message on a wireless laptop. That's not news to modern workers, many of whom may just be getting back from a long winter break during which they worked more than in years past.(周末度假和浪漫晚餐曾经是逃避日常工作生活的甜蜜方式。 Yang Sulian, a 72-year-old former Chinese teacher in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has made an unusual retirement decision: teaching herself middle school mathematics. An elderly woman asked her to take care of the baby girl in her arms while she went to use the nearby public restroom. Yang helped her and waited for her with the baby, but the woman never returned. Later, two notes from two different people were found hidden in the baby’s blanket. It turned out that the baby was first abandoned by her mother, a young college graduate, who was not ready for raising a child Then the baby was given up a second time by the older woman. The reason why the baby was abandoned a second time was that she was in poor health. Yang and her husband, though not well off, finally chose to seek treatment for the baby girl, paying the medical bills of11,000 RMB. At the same time, they made a plea (请求) through local media for help to find the baby’s family. When the plea failed to receive any information, Yang finally adopted the girl and named her Qianqian. Last year, Qianqian was admitted to a good school in Chengdu. Yang paid for Qianqian to attend after-school classes in preparation for the entrance exam, and also tutored (教导) Qianqian herself, after first teaching herself the material. ●Exercise during the day Don’t exercise right before going to bed. What we wear can help shape what we are inside. D. It’s beneficial to try different things in our lives. C Weekend getaways (短假) and romantic dinners used to be sweet escapes from the daily working life. 46. All her efforts are for the sake of her adopted granddaughter, Qianqian. Yang still vividly remembers the day she met Qianqian, who was still a baby crying in a blanket. It was July 2003. Yang and her husband though not well off, finally chose to seek treatment for the baby girl, paying the medical bills of11,000 RMB.
