It started innocently enough, as most things do. My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner. As a 45-year-old mother, I am not a physical person at all. But I still decided to join him in a training class. The first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground, I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body trembled with adrenaline (肾上腺素), as I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, but I had accomplished it.
Four months into my climbing journey, I had an accident while bouldering (攀岩). I’m not sure what exactly happened, but I believe, my foot missed a hold on the way down. I didn’t land properly and injured my lower back. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I feared that I would never return to rock climbing or bouldering and said to Nick sadly, “A piece of me would slip away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever. I couldn’t let that happen.”
It took nearly three months before I felt strong enough to give it another try. Nick was supportive throughout the process. I made it halfway up, but then panic set in. I felt like I had let myself and Nick down. He reassured me, telling me not to worry, to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready. Fifteen minutes later, I chose a different path. I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time. Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.
Rock climbing was doing wonders for me. It has not only enhanced my physical and mental strength but also implanted in me a newfound sense of confidence. Moreover, it serves as an excellent opportunity for Nick and me to strengthen our bond, while encouraging me to explore more possibilities, embodying the spirit of pushing myself to the limits.
4. Why did the author join rock climbing at first?
A. To keep her son company. B. To step out of comfort zone.
C. To improve her physical condition. D. To seek adventure and enjoyment.
5. The author’s words to her son in paragraph 2 imply that _______.
A. she was concerned about disconnecting with Nick
B. she feared losing self-identity gained from climbing
C. she valued the new insight developed from climbing
D. she was eager to demonstrate her physical capabilities
6. What was the key to the author’s successful try after recovery?
A. Her passion. B. Nick’s backing.
C Her experience. D. Doctors’ encouragement.
7. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Facing up to the next challenge B. Reaching for a lifelong ambition
C. Pushing boundaries with rock climbing D. Enhancing competence through bouldering
C
Snow can be a powerful reminder of childhood snow days — that joyful surprise when another expected day of sitting in school turned into one that was instead filled with snowball fights or skating. But there are also plenty of reasons why snow can appeal to people without that fond nostalgia (怀旧).
Snow quite literally changes our physical experience of the world. For example, freshly fallen snow is porous (多孔的) enough to absorb sound well, making the world quieter. And it plays even more strongly on our sense of sight. One aspect of that visual appeal is the way snow reflects light in the darker months. “A lot of people really struggle with winter darkness as much as they struggle with the cold,” says Leibowitz, who has written a book about mental health in winter. “The brightening effect of the snow, I think, is really powerful.”
Snow changes the very shape of the world people see around them, Leibowitz says, pointing to the way a fresh blanket of it hides and yet reveals the surroundings. “Things that you look at every day suddenly can appear very different,” she says.
In the right conditions, snow can be fascinating. But for certain people, the same weather can become the very opposite: annoying, exhausting or depressing. Leibowitz recommends welcoming changing seasons, taking inspiration from the long nights and cold days—and argues that snow can be a helpful cue to do so. “It’s such a clear visual reminder that we’re in a different season that perhaps it inspires people to respond more adaptively,” she says.
But as climate change continues to unfold, some historically snowy areas will lose the most magical precipitation (降水) and face nothing but cold rain. “There are a lot of places in the world that are right on this borderline where the difference of a couple of degrees of warming is the difference between a white, snowy winter…and a gray, rainy winter,” Leibowitz says. “I think there’s a lot that is lost when we lose the cold and when we lose the snow.”
8. What does the underlined word “one” refer to in paragraph 1?
A. A reminder. B. A surprise. C. A day. D. A snowball.
9. How does snow change our experience of the world?
A. By making musical sounds. B. By increasing the cold of winter.
C. By exercising our sense of sight. D. By offering a new look of the world.
10. What is Leibowitz’s suggestion to snow haters?
A. Searching for visual cues. B. Ignoring negative emotions.
C. Adjusting to seasonal changes. D. Cleaning unpleasant surroundings.
11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Express concern for snow loss. B. Make predictions of climate change.
C. Present reasons for increased rainfall. D. Summarize consequences of cold rain.
D
While we aim to avoid any appearance of baseless theories, it is noteworthy to observe the long-standing practice of putting magnets (磁铁) in cows, a phenomenon that has been carefully unfolding for years. Why are farmers putting magnets in cows?
Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with “hardware disease”. Hardware Disease occurs after an animal eats a metallic object that then makes a hole in the wall of the reticulum, the second stomach room in ruminant animals (反刍动物). This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants, similar to a person at an unlimited food event — quickly and eagerly large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used in fencing, for instance.
Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle’s diet. Farmers have also adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling gun. The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming fixed in the animal’s tissue. These magnets, once positioned, remain within the animals throughout their lifespan, only being removed after death when the cows pass away or are processed for meat.
Moseley, a Veterinary Medicine professor, states in a hardware disease resource, “The magnet gathers foreign metallic objects, reducing the risk of making a hole in the reticulum.” Research shows a mild magnetic field affects a cow’s small blood pathways, improving circulation and aiding recovery without significant impact on the cow or milk quality.
12. Why are magnets fed to cows?
A. To change feeding habits. B. To prevent hardware disease.
C. To improve the milk quality. D. To enhance digestive system.
13. What is the main cause of hardware disease in ruminant animals?
A. Eating without chewing. B. Taking magnets by mistake.
C. Sufficient chewing hard food. D. Swallowing metals accidentally.
14. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To describe the historical practice of putting magnets in cows.
B. To deny the adoption of cow magnets to enhance cattle health.
C. To discuss the influence of a mild magnetic field on milk quality.
D. To explain the reason for using magnets to prevent hardware disease.
15. What might be a logical continuation of the passage?
A. Exploring more potential benefits of cow magnets.
B. Investigating the broader applications of magnets.
C. Discussing the alternative methods of caring for cows.
D. Evaluating the long-term effects of magnets on animals.

I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a documentary (纪录片) about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the country. I love animals, and I felt an urge to go to this fundraising event. However, none of my co-workers would go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the area around the hotel didn’t seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to brave it. I gathered up my wallet and room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were nearly deserted. I managed to find the street the theater was on, but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers — very big, tough-looking bikers.
I’ve known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night, and there were twenty or so very large men — all wearing insignia (徽章) that indicated they were in some sort of club — standing before me. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date of the event?
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theater. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.

First Aid Knowledge Hits the Campus
Last weekend, our school hosted a hands-on first aid training program titled “First Aid Knowledge Hits the Campus”.
First Aid instructors began with live demonstrations, teaching CPR and wound bandaging through interactive drills. Students then practiced these skills under expert guidance. The highlight was a timed emergency simulation where teams raced to perform first aid on “injured” volunteers.
The event left a lasting impact. Over 90% of participants reported feeling more confident in handling emergencies. “I finally know how to act in critical moments,” shared one participant. Teachers praised the blend of theory and practice, calling it “life-saving knowledge every student needs.”
Possible version 2:
First Aid Knowledge Hits the Campus
Last weekend witnessed an activity with the theme of “First Aid Knowledge Hits the Campus”, which brought a wealth of first aid knowledge to students.
The day kicked off with an engaging seminar led by first aid instructors, sharing their expertise through interactive demonstrations and practical sessions. What followed was first aid practice under the attentive guidance of the professionals. The climax arrived when students competed in a simulated emergency contest, where teams raced to apply skills under time pressure.
The impact of the event has been tremendous. Not only did students gain practical knowledge, but they also built confidence and improved adaptability in emergency situations. (可增加 “Mastering CPR techniques makes me feel empowered to save lives,” shared a participant.)
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. They were chatting loudly and seemed to fill every corner of the place. My heart sank even further. I quickly found an empty seat in the back row, trying to make myself as inconspicuous as possible. I clutched my bag tightly, constantly glancing around, praying that nothing bad would happen. Every now and then, I peeked at the bikers, wondering what they were doing here. Were they going to cause trouble? The tension in the air was palpable, and I regretted my decision to come alone.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. They had come to support the fundraiser for the local animal shelters. As the documentary unfolded, showing the plight of the abandoned dogs, I saw many of the bikers wiping away tears. They were as moved as I was by the heartwarming and heartbreaking stories. During the intermission, some of them even came over to me, smiling kindly and asking if I was enjoying the film. Their tough exteriors hid big, soft hearts.
