By the time Nalin Kamat was 13 the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi- page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five- year - old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
As Nalin was busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
4. What do we know about Nalin Kamat from the first two paragraphs?
A. He drew teenagers’ growth in his work. B. He became a working artist when aged 13.
C. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition. D. He showed his series at the capital art center.
5. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery?
A. To promote artists by showcasing their work.
B. To form the connection between different galleries.
C. To expand his own business through themed shows.
D. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
6. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery?
A. Pioneering. B. Short-lived. C. Popular. D. Unpromising.
7. What kind of person is Nalin Kamat according to the text?
A. Helpful and cautious. B. Devoted and creative.
C. Humorous and intelligent. D. Knowledgeable and ambitious.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. B

Dear Editor,
After I attended your summer camp about health and lifestyle choices, I realised I hardly ever felt well, either physically or mentally. I often felt sleepy and dizzy, and lacked passion. Most worrying, though, I got the flu easily and experienced many toothaches, too.
At the end of the camp I heard, “Change the world by changing yourself.” This stimulated my motivation. A dentist once examined me and told me that too much sugar in my meals had damaged my teeth and health. I made up my mind to change two things in my life: to eat nothing with sugar and to exercise regularly.
After that I stopped buying all the sweets, biscuits, and sugary drinks that I used to have every day. Whenever I went out with friends, I brought snacks from home, things that didn’t have any added sugar:fruit, nuts, dried meat, etc.
My exercise was very simple:I went outside every day for at least 30 minutes and did something active. Sometimes I played table tennis or badminton with my cousins. Other times I jumped on my skateboard and rode around my neighbourhood, or just took a long walk.
The results have been fantastic. I feel more dynamic and stronger than ever, in both body and mind. I sleep soundly at night now. I no longer suffer from a flu virus or toothaches either. Best of all, in my opinion, is how I feel about myself. I feel like I’m in control of my own life. To make choices about myself is within my own power. I CAN change myself. I just need to try.
Yours truly,
Wang Lu
Dear Editor,
As I took part in the summer camp about personal life choices, I started to analyse my choices, especially what I did to relax and how it was affecting my whole life.
After starting high school, I felt stressed out and always relaxed by playing computer games. I got so absorbed that I played the games day and night. Playing was fun, but I felt even more worn out afterwards! So after the camp, I realised that it was very, very important to adjust my lifestyle. I decided to take control of my life and find other ways to relax.
It was a big struggle not to join my friends in playing online games as I’m mad for them. However, I realised that to succeed in quitting, I had to replace it with something else. So I thought about what to try. Rock climbing, bowling, watching comedies, and playing basketball were the things I thought of doing instead.
Now my dad and I go rock climbing together monthly! It has enhanced the quality of my life, improving my health and increasing my happiness. I get refreshed through climbing, spend more time with my dad, and get to meet new friends.
After six months of trying out new ways of relaxing, I feel much more energetic. I feel that I can change myself for the better. And if that’s true for me, then it might truly be possible to change the world for the better. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
Sincerely
George Fielding

Your favourite foods might not taste the same in the future, and the climate crisis is behind it.
In Spain, the black Iberian pigs, which are very important for making special ham, usually eat acorns (橡子) and surrounding grass under oak trees. However, because of heatwaves and a five-year drought, these natural foods are becoming less. So, the pigs are now fed olives (橄榄), thereby changing the unique flavour of the ham.
Drought also affects how fruits taste. For example, watermelons and cantaloupes (香瓜) taste different when there’s a drought. Researchers from a Spanish tech centre told a Spanish newspaper that sugars and other compounds build up during droughts, changing the taste of food, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
Beyond drought rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food flavours. Typically, warm days and cool nights improve the sugar and acid content in fruits, which are essential for the optimal flavour. However, global warming makes this hard to achieve. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier due to early blooming and high temperatures during growth.
While the food we eat is deeply influenced by the climate crisis, our food choices also cause it. Eating meat and dairy from cows has a big impact on the climate. Raising livestock (牲畜) produces a lot of greenhouse gases. Making animal protein also needs more land, energy and water than making plant-based protein.
This may seem like a problem that can’t be solved, but we can break this cycle. The Good Food Institute, a US group, believes people will choose alternative protein if they are as tasty and affordable as meat.
Meanwhile, more people have started to take action. According to The New York Times, Will Hlamris, a US farmer, practises regenerative farming, allowing cows to move around freely, using less chemical use and disturbing the soil less, which is more environmentally friendly.
12. What changes the flavour of the ham?
A. The harvest of acorns and the surrounding grass.
B. People’s need to make the flavour special.
C. The shortage of food sources and alternative feed.
D. The unique compounds caused by heatwaves.
13. What does the underlined word “optimal” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Strange. B. Best. C. Worst. D. Common.
14. According to the Good Food Institute, people will choose alternative protein if ______.
A. the environment changes B. they are cheaper than meat
C. they are delicious and cheap enough D. the greenhouse gases disappear
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Benefits of regenerative farming. B. Food production affected by climate.
C. Livestock’s role in making protein. D. Climate crisis changing food taste.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第二段“In Spain, the black Iberian pigs, which are very important for making special ham, usually eat acorns (橡子) and surrounding grass under oak trees. However, because of heatwaves and a five-year drought, these natural foods are becoming less. So, the pigs are now fed olives (橄榄), thereby changing the unique flavour of the ham.(在西班牙,黑伊比利亚猪是制作特殊火腿的重要原料,它们通常吃橡树下的橡子和周围的草。然而,由于热浪和长达五年的干旱,这些天然食物越来越少了。因此,猪现在被喂橄榄,从而改变了火腿的独特风味)”可知,食物来源的短缺和替代饲料是导致火腿风味改变的原因。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Typically, warm days and cool nights improve the sugar and acid content in fruits(通常,温暖的白天和凉爽的夜晚会提高水果中的糖和酸含量)”和下文“However, global warming makes this hard to achieve. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier due to early blooming and high temperatures during growth.(然而,全球变暖使这一目标难以实现。例如,由于早熟和生长过程中的高温,日本苹果变得不那么酸、更软、更干)”可知,全球变暖使得水果的成分有所变化,日本苹果变得不那么可口,味道不佳。由此可知,原先的气候条件可以促成水果达到最佳的风味。由此推知,划线词意思是“最好的,最佳的”,与B项Best意思一致。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The Good Food Institute, a US group, believes people will choose alternative protein if they are as tasty and affordable as meat.(美国健康食品研究所认为,如果替代蛋白和肉类一样美味又实惠,人们会选择它们)”可知,该机构认为,替代蛋白足够美味和便宜的情况下,人们会选择它们。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Your favourite foods might not taste the same in the future, and the climate crisis is behind it.(你最喜欢的食物在未来可能尝起来不一样,而气候危机是背后的原因)”可知,文章主要讨论了气候危机如何影响食物的味道,包括干旱、气温上升和海平面上升等因素。由此可知,D项“气候危机改变食物味道”最能概括文章的主旨。故选D项。

“Vacation, finally!” exclaimed Meg, coming home to find Jo already lying on the sofa.
“What will you do on your vacation?” asked Amy.
“Stay in bed late, and do nothing,” replied Meg.
“Sit in the old apple tree and read!” said Jo.
“Beth, let’s not do any lessons for a while, but play all the time and rest, like Meg and Jo,” begged Amy.
“I will, if Mother. doesn’t mind. I want to learn some new songs,” replied Beth.
“May we all try what we want to do, Mother?” asked Meg.
“You may try your experiment for a week and see how you like it,” Mrs March said with a smile.
“It will be wonderful, I’m sure,” said Meg.
“Fun forever, and no work!” exclaimed Jo.
The next morning Meg got up at ten o’ clock and had breakfast alone. Jo spent the morning with a friend and the afternoon reading in the apple tree. Beth pulled all her toys out of her closet but then left them to play some music. Amy put on her best dress and went outside to draw, hoping someone would notice the beautiful young artist. No one appeared, so she went for a walk, got caught in the rain, and came home dripping.
In the evening, they all assured their mother the experiment was going well. She smiled, said nothing, and did her work, keeping their home pleasant and running smoothly.
The days became longer and longer, and it affected all four girls. Meg found time hanging heavily and started cutting and spoiling her clothes, trying to make them more fashionable. Jo read till her eyes hurt and she was sick of books. Beth sometimes suddenly shook her doll and shouted at it. Amy was quite bored, for she didn’t like dolls or reading, and she couldn’t draw all the time. But no one would admit that they were tired of the experiment.
On Saturday morning, the girls got up to find no breakfast in the dining room and no mother to be seen.
Meg ran upstairs and soon came back, looking relieved but a little ashamed.
“Mother isn’t sick, only very tired. She says she is going to rest today and let us do the best we can.” Meg said.

【答案】“Mother says it has been a hard week or her, so we must take care of ourselves.” Beth and Amy set the table, while Jo and Meg got breakfast ingredients. Fearing to ask advice, Jo and Meg did their best alone, and discovered that cooking, indeed, was a rather difficult task. They boiled the vegetables for too long, and was upset to see they were too soft. The bread burned black and the meat was tough. After the ruined breakfast was finished, they walked out with the dessert proudly, and watched as each one tasted the creation. Unfortunately, none of them are satisfied with breakfast.
In the evening, the girls sighed: “Not a bit like home without Mother”. At this time, Mother came in. “If you learn a bit of cooking, Jo and Meg. That is quite useful” said Mrs. March. She added that the comfort of home depends on each doing her duties. The girl finally understood that teaching. “Don’t you feel that it is more pleasant to help one another to make home comfortable and lovely to us all?” “We do, Mother, we do!” cried the girls. “Then, you must take up your duties again tomorrow. I know they sometimes seem difficult, but they become easier with time.”

Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food flavours.
B People’s need to make the flavour special.
