There is the case of Ivan Mishukov, a 6-year-old boy from Moscow. Police found him living with dogs in the city’s streets in 1998. There, he had been begging for two years. Try to think about this: When you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato, suddenly the tomato starts to shout! It would never really happen. But a new study showed that plants make sounds when they are stressed (压力).
Scientists from Tel Aviv University did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. They listened to three groups of plants: one group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems (茎), and the third group was untouched.

13.(22-23七年级下·江苏南京·期中)In December 2022, people in Shenzhen found that water ran more slowly from their taps. The government said the city was facing its most serious water shortage ever.
Some other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming “thirsty”,The Paperreported. Compared (相比) with northern areas, southern areas have more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water?
In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has less than 200 cubic meters of water each year. It’s l/12 of the country’s average. According to the United Nations, it is an “absolute water shortage” (极度缺水) when the number is below 500 cubic meters.
Climate change is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source (来源) of water. In 2022, the river was reported to be drying up. Because of climate change, there’s also less snow in the mountains of Xizang. The snow has long been the source of water for many areas in China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.
There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don’t use water efficiently (有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don’t have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to store water. The water just goes into the sea.
1.Where is this text most probably from?

C.1200 cubic meters. D.2400 cubic meters.
3.Why is there less water in China’s rivers according to Paragraph 4?
A.People are using up the water in these rivers.
B.The rivers flow through many areas with less rain.
C.Mountains in Xizang have less snow.
D.Most water goes to the sea before people can get it.
4.Which is NOT a reason for the water shortage mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.Water pollution. B.Wasting water.
C.Lack of storing place. D.Climate change.
5.What is the author’s attitude to the shortage of water?

With Sora, you may soon be able to find out. The latest AI model can generate videos up to a minute long from some key words in seconds. It was built by OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT.

There is the case of Ivan Mishukov, a 6-year-old boy from Moscow. Police found him living with dogs in the city’s streets in 1998. There, he had been begging for two years. Ivan found food to feed the dogs. And in return, the dogs kept him warm and protected him while he slept. When he was saved, he could hardly speak.
The first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only made the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the study team told CNN.
Scientists believe that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is stressed and not good for laying eggs on (产卵). When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound to choose which one to eat.

12.(22-23七年级下·江苏盐城·期中)David lives alone with his mother. He hasn’t got a father. He hasn’t got any brothers or sisters. And he hasn’t got a pet. He likes cats, but his mother says he can’t have one. She says they can’t have a cat because they haven’t got a garden. David thinks his mother simply doesn’t want a cat. A boy in his class lives in a flat and he has a cat. And David knows that pirates have cats, and they haven’t got gardens!
But in a way he doesn’t mind. He doesn’t feel lonely. His head is full of explorers, gangsters, astronauts, cowboys, native Americans and secret agents.
“Eat your breakfast quickly, love,” says his mum.
She is making his lunch. She works at the hospital and she is wearing her nurse’s uniform. She starts work in half an hour and she is in a hurry.
“OK,” David replies, starting to eat his cereal. His mother looks quite serious. He knows she worries about him a lot.
“Sorry, I’m late, Mum.”
“That’s all right,” she says, and smiles.
“Now don’t forget your sandwiches,” she says.
“Don’t worry.”
But ten minutes later, when David runs out of the front door to catch the bus, his lunch is still on the table. And then David misses the bus.
He waits another fifteen minutes for the next one. When it arrives, he gets on and goes up the stairs to sit on the top floor. He sees that he is the only person on the bus wearing a blue sweatshirt and grey trousers—the uniform of Westbourne High School. He's very late.
David likes looking out of the window at the cars, the people, the shops and houses. He soon sees two boys. They aren’t wearing school uniforms. A boy with red hair is riding a bicycle, and the other one is running beside him. They are laughing.

With Sora, you may soon be able to find out. The latest AI model can generate videos up to a minute long from some key words in seconds. It was built by OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
The public cannot use Sora now. OpenAI is asking experts to test it for possible risks (风险). The model is also open to a small group of artists. The company hopes to make Sora better.
Before Sora, the leading text-to-video AI model was made by Runway. The videos it produced were short and often frightening. So most people were surprised by the high quality of Sora’s videos.
Sora model isn’t perfect now because it may not understand cause and effect. “For example, a person may take a bite out of a cookie, but then the cookie may not have a bite mark,” OpenAI says on its website. What’s more, Sora cannot tell left or right. In a video on the OpenAI website, a man is running on a treadmill (跑步机) in the opposite direction. At the same time, some people have other worries. They are afraid that some people may not use AI-generated content in a correct way. Unreal AI-generated information is the biggest risk the world faces. To solve this problem, OpenAI says that it’s also building tools to help users to find out videos made by Sora.
