In this lively little city, there are many fun places to see and things to do. Here are the top four things you can do when you visit Sydney.
Enjoy the view from the top of Sydney Tower
At 305 meters, Sydney Tower is the tallest building in the city, offering a 360-degree view. From it, you can see Sydney Harbour (港口), the Sydney Opera House, and even the Blue Mountains. For an extra thrill, try the Skywalk, an outdoor glass-floored platform.
Ride the famous Sydney Ferries (渡船)
Ferries are a key part of Sydney’s transport system. They leave from Circular Quay, travel through Sydney Harbour, and reach Manly Beach. Enjoy attractive views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House along the way. Once at Manly, explore the beach, enjoy local seafood, or take a walk.
Visit the famous Sydney Opera House
Take a guided tour of the Sydney Opera House to learn about its history and design. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a variety of performances, from opera and ballet to modern music and theater. After your tour or show, relax at a nearby cafe or restaurant with a harbour view.
See animals up close at Taronga Zoo
Taronga Zoo, located on the shores of Sydney Harbour, is home to over 4,000 animals from 350 species. Feed a giraffe, take a photo with a koala, or watch a penguin show. The zoo also offers unique experiences like the “Roar and Snore” overnight stay, allowing you to camp out and enjoy the zoo after dark. Educational talks and animal encounters make it a fun visit for all ages.
Whether it’s your first time in Sydney or you’re visiting again, these activities will help you fully enjoy the uniqueness of this city.

A Canadian named Justin was fishing during a recent rafting (漂流) trip on the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan Rivers when he heard something noisy in the water. He saw a nose barely above the water. Unable to tell what kind of animal it was in the dark and water, Justin reached for the animal but ended up falling out of his raft in the freezing cold river. Luckily, Justin was somehow able to locate the animal—a coyote pup (郊狼崽)—in the water and catch his raft before it floated away for good.
Unfortunately, when Justin brought the animal back to his raft, the baby coyote was unconscious and didn’t seem to be breathing. The pup was lucky again. Justin had experience with CPR and pushed on its belly in hopes of revival(复活). After a few pushes, water came out of the coyote’s nose and he was breathing again! Justin and his new friend were both wet through so they made their way back to land, where Justin made a fire and tried to warm the little guy up.
During his 10-day rafting trip, Justin brought the coyote he named YipYip along for the ride, and kept the coyote with him the entire time. The little pup would eat with Justin and sleep in his backpack. Justin wrapped him in his jacket when it was cold. When Justin was able to get Internet service, he called his wife for advice. The couple eventually got in touch with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan (WRSOS).
According to WRSOS president Bonnie Dell, YipYip quickly befriended the other adopted coyote pups. “He is wilding up and has a healthy fear of humans now. He will not be returned to the wild until he is old enough,” Dell said, adding that YipYip would have died without Justin’s efforts.
24. What happened when Justin was fishing?
A. His raft got out of control. B. He nearly fell into the river.
C. Someone was crying for help. D. An animal was struggling in the river.
25. What does the author mean by saying “The pup was lucky again”?
A. The pup was not quite dead.
B. The pup was rescued from the river.
C. Justin warmed him up with a fire in time.
D. Justin knew a medical technique for revival.
26. Which of the following can best describe Justin in Paragraph 3?
A. Caring. B. Controlled. C. Defensive. D. Scared.
27. What is YipYip’s present situation?
A. He acts strangely. B. He is somewhat fierce.
C. He is perfectly normal. D. He needs special medical care.

With the largest population in the world, China has the most mouths to feed on the planet. Consequently, food waste is a great problem in China. It is reported that more than 6% — or 35 million kgs — of the country's total food production is lost before reaching consumers, in the household and warehouse storage, transport and processing sectors. With an ever-growing population, it's imperative to deal with food waste in China.
Thankfully, policies covering food waste have been rapidly emerging in recent years. Since 2010, the Chinese government has selected 100 cities and encouraged them to explore alternative waste management systems. In 2016,China amended (修改) its Solid Waste Law to stop illegal dumping (倾倒) and promote recycling and reuse of waste, including food. Restaurants will soon be charged a fee for the amount of food waste they produce. And China is using a good food waste processing method called anaerobic digestion, a process that transforms organic waste into biogas, which can be used as energy, or turned into biofuel.
Moving forward, policymakers should consider loss and waste reduction to be as important as increasing production. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the current policy system of agricultural subsidisation (补贴) mainly includes price guarantees and subsidies for crops, production materials, seeds and agricultural machinery, which leads to local governments focusing on crop production while paying little attention to the wastage in the supply chain. There should also be increased investment in the construction of new warehouses and special funds for storage, transport, and processing technologies.
If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitting (排放)country in the world, generating about 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions. This issue is not location-specific, but an issue that affects every living thing on the planet and should therefore be seen as an essential area to take action in.
28. What does the underlined word “imperative”in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Impractical. B. Hopeful. C. Costly. D. Urgent
29. What can we say about the anaerobic digestion method?
A. It has been widely used in restaurants.
B. It is required by the Solid Waste Law.
C. It is eco-friendly to reuse food waste.
D. It has proved effective in 100 cities.
30. What is a result of the current agricultural subsidisation policy?
A. Food waste in the supply chain is ignored.
B. Prices of production materials go up.
C. Investment in the supply chain increases.
D. Food waste during crop production gets serious.
31 What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To promote the idea of recycling food waste.
B. To call for action against food waste.
C. To assess the consequences of food waste.
D. To discuss the reasons behind food waste.
D
When the company OpenAI developed its new artificial intelligence (AI) program, ChatGPT, in late 2022, educators began to worry. ChatGPT could create text and it seemed that a human wrote it. How could teachers discover whether students were using language created by an AI chatbot to cheat on a writing task?
As a linguist who studies the effects of technology on how people read, write and think, I believe there are other more pressing concerns besides cheating. These include whether AI, more generally, threatens student writing skills, the value of writing as a process, and the importance of seeing writing as a tool for thinking.
As part of my research on the effects of AI on human writing, I surveyed young adults in the U. S. about some issues related to those effects. One participant said that at some point if you depend on predictive text, you’ re going to lose your spelling abilities. Enter “Was Rom” into a Google search and you’ re given a list of choices like “Was Rome built in a day”. Type “ple” into a text message and you’ re offered “please” and “plenty”. These tools complete our sentences automatically, giving us little chance to think about our spelling, and continuously asking us to follow their suggestions.
Evan Selinger, a philosopher, worried that predictive texting reduces the power of writing as a form of mental activity and personal expression. “By encouraging us not to think too deeply about our words, predictive technology may change how we deal with each other,” Selinger wrote, “We give others more algorithms (算法) and less of ourselves. Automation can stop us thinking and the resulting text didn’t feel like mine anymore.”
I asked ChatGPT whether it was a threat to humans’ motivation to write. The bot responded: “There will always be a demand for creative, original content that requires the unique viewpoint of a human writer.” It continued: “Writing serves many purposes beyond just the creation of content, such as self-expression, communication and personal growth, which can continue to encourage people to write even if certain types of writing can be automated.”
I was glad to find the program had seemingly admitted its limitations.
32. What’s the author’s main concern about ChatGPT?
A Whether it will lead to students’ cheating.
B. Whether it will write articles like humans.
C. How students will make use of it at school.
D. What effects it will have on students’ writing.
33. What will predictive technology do to us according to Evan Selinger?
A. Give us more creative ideas. B. Make us write like a machine.
C. Encourage us to think more deeply. D. Make us tend to ignore grammatical mistakes.
34. What can we learn from ChatGPT’s response?
A. Writing will become completely automated.
B. Robots will work with humans in writing.
C. Robot writing will become more creative.
D. Human writing will still matter a lot.
35. What may the author think of the bot’s reply to his question?
A. Satisfactory. B. One-sided.
C. Ambiguous. D. Unacceptable.

67. 读后续写
The day of my big solo (独唱表演) had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom and dad and my little brother. It was a big event: the Spring Fling Choir Concert. My name was on the cover of the program. “Cindy Hamond … Soloist.” I couldn’t believe it. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn’t Renee Swanson’s.
Renee and I had been friends since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she was always ahead of me. Dance-class recital needs a big finish? Renee was picked. Softball? She played first base. And the school plays? Renee would have the leads. The only time I ever came in ahead of Renee was at roll call (点名). Hamond comes before Swanson. I count that as a victory.
The choir concert tryout was stressful for me. We waited while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jenkins got to the H’s, my heart sped up and my whole body was shaking. When I came back, Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and Renee calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over.
When Ms. Jenkins announced who had made the special choir group, I wasn’t surprised when Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said under my breath, “what else is new?”
Sudden clapping came. Everyone was looking at me. I’ve missed something here, I thought. Ms. Jenkins looked at me, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me. The solos take extra preparation.” Solo? I got the solo? I could hardly believe my ears. I glanced over at Renee. She smiled and gave me the thumbs-up sign.
Now the day had come. we filed onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center. Ms. Jenkins raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. I could see my parents were smiling at me.
The spotlight circled me in its bright light. Ms. Jenkins nodded and pointed her baton at me, but I froze right there on the spot.

26 Which of the following can best describe Justin in Paragraph 3?
A. Caring. B. Controlled. C. Defensive. D. Scared.

31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To promote the idea of recycling food waste.
B. To call for action against food waste.
C. To assess the consequences of food waste.
D. To discuss the reasons behind food waste.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. A 31. B
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。 文章介绍了中国食物浪费问题及其采取的措施,号召人们采取行动减少食物浪费。
【28题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第一段中的“food waste is a great problem in China(食物浪费在中国是一个大问题)”以及本段中的数据“more than 6% — or 35 million kgs — of the country's total food production is lost(损失了超过该国粮食总产量的6%,即3500万公斤)”可知,食物浪费现象在中国很严重,因此解决这一问题很“紧急”。文末将食物浪费比作一个国家,并指出其是一个需要采取紧急行动的区域,因此推断选项中划线词与urgent意思相近。故选D。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“And China is using a good food waste processing method called anaerobic digestion, a process that transforms organic waste into biogas, which can be used as energy, or turned into biofuel.(中国正在使用一种叫做厌氧消化的良好的食品废物处理方法,这是一种将有机废物转化为沼气,沼气可以用作能源,也可以转化为生物燃料的过程)”可知,厌氧消化法( anaerobic digestion)是一种很好的处理餐厨垃圾的方法,它能将有机垃圾转化为沼气用作能源,或者将沼气转化为生物燃料。由此可推知,厌氧消化法是一种很环保的处理餐厨垃圾的方法。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“the current policy system of agricultural subsidisation (补贴) mainly includes price guarantees and subsidies for crops, production materials, seeds and agricultural machinery, which leads to local governments focusing on crop production while paying little attention to the wastage in the supply chain.(目前的农业补贴政策体系主要包括对农作物、生产材料、种子和农业机械的价格保障和补贴,导致地方政府关注作物生产,而不重视供应链的浪费)”可知,现行的农业补贴政策的结构导致地方政府对供应链中的浪费问题关注较少。故选A。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。本文介绍了中国的食物浪费问题、中国应对食物浪费采取的措施以及其他解决食物浪费问题的办法,再结合最后一段中的“This issue is not location-specific, but an issue that affects every living thing on the planet and should therefore be seen as an essential area to take action in.( 食物浪费问题不是某个地方特有的问题,而是影响地球上每个生物的问题,因此必须采取紧急行动。)”可知,本文的主要目的就是号召人们采取行动,解决食物浪费问题。故选B。

A. Whether it will lead to students’ cheating.
B. One-sided.
C Ambiguous. D. Unacceptable.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. D 35. A

【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要探讨了ChatGPT对学生写作的影响及其潜在问题。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As a linguist who studies the effects of technology on how people read, write and think, I believe there are other more pressing concerns besides cheating. These include whether AI, more generally, threatens student writing skills, the value of writing as a process, and the importance of seeing writing as a tool for thinking. (作为一名研究科技对人们阅读、写作和思考方式影响的语言学家,我认为除了作弊之外,还有其他更紧迫的问题。这些问题包括人工智能是否会威胁到学生的写作技能,写作作为一个过程的价值,以及将写作视为一种思考工具的重要性)”可知,作者更关注它对学生写作会产生什么影响。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Evan Selinger, a philosopher, worried that predictive texting reduces the power of writing as a form of mental activity and personal expression. “By encouraging us not to think too deeply about our words, predictive technology may change how we deal with each other, ” Selinger wrote, “We give others more algorithms (算法) and less of ourselves. Automation can stop us thinking and the resulting text didn’t feel like mine anymore.”
根据第五段中“The bot responded: “There will always be a demand for creative, original content that requires the unique viewpoint of a human writer.” It continued: “Writing serves many purposes beyond just the creation of content, such as self-expression, communication and personal growth, which can continue to encourage people to write even if certain types of writing can be automated.” (机器人回答说:“对创造性的原创内容的需求总是存在的,这需要人类作家的独特观点。”它还说:“除了创造内容之外,写作还有很多目的,比如自我表达、交流和个人成长,即使某些类型的写作可以自动化,这也会继续鼓励人们写作。”)”可知,虽然未来有些写作会实现自动化,但是那些原创、个性化的写作永远是需要的。由此推知,人类完成的写作很重要,机器无法取而代之。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I was glad to find the program had seemingly admitted its limitations. (我很高兴地发现,这个项目似乎已经承认了它的局限性)” 可知,作者对ChatGPT的回答是满意的。故选A。

【答案】An Experience of First Aid
Learning that English newspaper in our school is going to publish a column about safety education, I can’t wait to share my relevant experience in order to draw people’s attention to safety. As a little child, my hands were scalded by the boiled water due to my carelessness. Seeing the burn in my hand, my mother placed the injured part under the running cold water. Then she applied the medicine. Thanks to my mother’s calm and timely treatment, the burn didn’t leave a scar.
First aid knowledge can not only save lives, but also it can help reduce the severity of injuries. I hope everyone can master some basic and practical first aid skills like CPR and Heimlich manoeuvre, which is beneficial to people.

第二节 (满分25分)

Paragraph2:

【答案】Paragraph 1:
I couldn’t breathe, neither could I think, and worse still, I couldn’t sing. The note started up and then stuck in my throat. “You can do it, Cindy.” Renee whispered. “I know you can.” I wasn’t as sure as she was. My turn came again. I took a deep breath and sang out. All that came out was a rusty-sounding squeak (刺耳的声音). But in that same moment, from behind me, came the pure tone of the right note. Renee gave me a gentle poke (轻戳). My voice lifted and matched hers. When the next note came, it was all me.
Paragraph 2:
The rest of the solo went well. And when the concert was over, came the thunderous clapping. Renee was the first to hug me. “Thanks, Renee,” was all I could get myself to say. Renee smiled and gave me another hug. “What are friends for?” Friends? Did she say friends? “You’re right,” This time I hugged her, beginning to love the feeling of being her friend.
