RESTORE AND REWILD
The 2024 Nature Restoration Law aims to renew and protect 20 percent of the European Union’s (EU’s) decreased land by 2030. Europe is launching hundreds of bold rewilding initiatives in the following places, which leads to a lot of benefits for wildlife and people.
Apennine
Hunting, poisoning, and traffic accidents endanger some 60 Marsican bears in the central Apennine. Removing outdated fencing helps them move freely and the number of tourists is strictly controlled.
Kraansvlak
Bison (野牛) introduced to work as landscape engineers feed on trees invading easily destroyed sand hills. The result: a sustainable ecosystem and habitat.
Koitajoki
Work to restore 2,500 acres of peatlands (泥炭地) has been beneficial to birds, flood reduction, and ecosystems under the water, aiding fish such as Finland’s last natural salmon.
Carpathian Mountains
The government’s calling on sustainable tourism leads to decreasing tourist numbers. The region is seeing the return of wildlife to abandoned farmland.
CONSERVATION VS REWILDING
These two restoration models are guided by different approaches and long - term goals.
1. What is the intention of launching the Nature Restoration Law?
A. To protect the world’s land. B. To conduct wildlife research.
C. To preserve the EU’s declining area. D. To promote biological initiatives.
2. What is the common approach used in Apennine and Carpathian Mountains?
A. Forbidding hunting. B. Limiting tourist numbers.
C. Dismissing outdated measures. D. Restoring abandoned lands.
3. Which area is more suitable for applying rewilding?
A. Rich farmland. B. Pre-industrial sites.
C. Isolated habitats. D. Wide-ranging landscape.

Do I think the sky is falling? Sort of.
My husband and I were recently in Egypt, where the temperature reached 113 degrees, a bit warm for my tiny princess self. Medic, medic! So, we left Egypt. Back home, my dearest friends struggled with health stuff, with family craziness, with damaged children both young and grown.
The game of life is hard, and a lot of us are playing hurt. I ache for the world but naturally I’m mostly watching the Me Movie, where balance and strength are beginning to fail. What can we do as the creaking (嘎吱响的) elevators of age slowly descend? The main solution is to get outside every day, ideally with friends. Old friends-even thoughts of them-are my comfort.
Recently I was walking along a beach with Neshama. We go back 50 years. She is 84, short and strong. Every so often, she bent down somewhat tentatively and picked up small items into a small cloth bag. “What are you doing?” “I’m picking up micro litter. I try to help where I can.”
I reminded her of an old story. A great warhorse comes upon a tiny sparrow lying on its back with its feet in the air, eyes tightly shut with effort. The horse asks it what it’s doing. “I’m trying to help hold back the darkness.” The horse roars with laughter. “That is so funny. What do you weigh?” And the sparrow replies, “One does what one can.” This is what older age means; we do what we can.
We continued our walk. Neshama bent to pick up bits of litter and started to slip, but I caught her and we laughed. We are so physically vulnerable in older age. We have caught each other a lot and have come through some periods of darkness and overwhelming losses, but friendship makes it all a rowing machine for the soul. We can take it as long as we feel and give love, and laugh gently at ourselves as we fall apart. We know by a certain age the great lies in our life - if you do or achieve this or that, you will be happy and rich. No. Love and service make us rich.
4. What does the author think of her present life?
A. She enjoys making new friends.
B. She feels more struggles over aging process.
C. She finds it challenging to handle family crises.
D. She wants others to learn from her life experiences.
5. What message does the story of the sparrow convey?
A. Age makes small efforts less meaningful over time.
B. Strength in numbers is necessary to change the world.
C. Even the smallest action will contribute to a bigger result.
D. Every small action counts, no matter how insignificant it seems.
6. Which of the following can best describe Neshama?
A. Healthy and cautious.
B. Caring and responsible.
C. Cooperative and modest.
D. Educated and committed.
7. What does the author suggest about the meaning of life in older age?
A. Love and acts of service bring true richness in life.
B. Happiness is achieved through love, rather than wealth.
C. Health and. independence are definitely the ultimate goals.
D. True richness comes from love, service, and achievements.
B 5. D 6. B 7. A
根据文章第三段中的“The game of life is hard, and a lot of us are playing hurt. I ache for the world but naturally I’m mostly watching the Me Movie, where balance and strength are beginning to fail. What can we do as the creaking (嘎吱响的) elevators of age slowly descend?
根据文章第五段中的“The horse roars with laughter. “That is so funny. What do you weigh?” And the sparrow replies, “One does what one can.” This is what older age means; we do what we can. (马大笑起来,“这太有趣了。你有多重呢?”麻雀回答说:“一个人能做什么就做什么。”这就是衰老的意义;我们做自己力所能及的事。)”可知,文中提到麻雀的故事,麻雀虽小却努力想要阻挡黑暗,回应马的质疑时所说的话,意在传达不管行动看起来多么微不足道,每一个小行动都是有意义、有价值的,都很重要。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段中的“She is 84, short and strong. Every so often, she bent down somewhat tentatively and picked up small items into a small cloth bag. “What are you doing?” “I’m picking up micro litter. I try to help where I can.”
根据文章最后一段中的“We know by a certain age the great lies in our life - if you do or achieve this or that, you will be happy and rich. No. Love and service make us rich. (到了某个年龄,我们就知道我们生活中的伟大之处——如果你做到了或做到了这一点或那一点,你就会幸福而富有。不,爱和服务使我们富有。)”可知,作者认为在老年阶段,爱和服务才会让我们的人生真正富有,也就是生命的意义在于此。故选A项。
C
Among the members of my social network, a handful bring out mixed emotions — both eagerness and fear. Interactions with them feel like a conversational game of Russian roulette (轮盘赌). In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but if I catch them at the wrong moment, they can wipe out all my positive energy. There is simply no knowing what is to come. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies.
Julianne Holt-Lunstad and her colleagues at Brigham Young University have designed a scale that identifies four categories of relationships. You can try it for yourself. Pick a couple of people within your social network and answer the following two questions on a scale of one (not at all) to six (very much). When you are feeling in need of advice, understanding or a favor, how helpful is your connection? Likewise, how upsetting is your connection?
People who score one on both questions are your indifferent relationships — a neighbor, perhaps, with neither good nor bad qualities. Those who score highly on the first question, while getting the lowest possible rating on the second, are your supportive and loyal social ties. Those with the lowest score on the first question and high marks on the second are aversive relationships. Finally, anyone with a score of two or more on both scales is considered an ambivalent connection — your frenemies. They may be incredibly generous when you have a problem yet can also strike back with a bitter put-down when they feel envious or threatened.
Research suggests that ambivalent, love-hate relationships are often more stressful than consistently negative ones, damaging mental and physical health. Cutting off contact may not always be possible, especially if the person is a boss or family member. So, what can be done?
Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection. Personally, I use this insight to prepare myself emotionally, focus on the positives, and limit interactions when needed. It also leads me to reflect on my own actions — am I ever the frenemy? I am resolved to be a little more mindful of my interactions with all my ties.
8. Why does the author compare interactions with certain people to Russian roulette?
A. To suggest ways to handle these interactions.
B. To show how these people compete for attention.
C. To introduce a social game these people like to play.
D. To stress how unpredictable these interactions can be.
9. Which figure best illustrates the different types of relationships in our social network?
A. B.
C. D.
10. What does the author suggest readers do?
A. Avoid interacting with frenemies.
B. Caution against acting like a frenemy.
C. Encourage frenemies to act more positively.
D. Balance frenemies with supportive friendships.
11. What is the central message the author intends to convey through this text?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. Only true friends are worth keeping.
C. A healthy friendship needs give-and-take. D. Love-hate relationships are surprisingly bad.
D 9. B 10. B 11. D
文章第一段“Interactions with them feel like a conversational game of Russian roulette (轮盘赌). In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but if I catch them at the wrong moment, they can wipe out all my positive energy. There is simply no knowing what is to come(与他们的互动感觉就像一场对话式的俄罗斯轮盘赌。在心情好的时候,这些人能带来一个充满乐趣的夜晚,但如果在不合适的时候遇到他们,他们会耗尽我所有的正能量。根本不知道接下来会发生什么)”可知与他们的互动感觉就像一场对话式的俄罗斯轮盘赌,可推理出这里将与某些人的互动比作俄罗斯轮盘赌,重点在于强调这种互动的不可预测性,就像轮盘赌的结果难以预知一样,可能好也可能坏。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“People who score one on both questions are your indifferent relationships(在两个问题上都得1分的人是你的冷漠关系)”、“Those who score highly on the first question, while getting the lowest possible rating on the second, are your supportive and loyal social ties(在第一个问题上得分高,而在第二个问题上得分尽可能低的人,是支持和忠诚的社会关系)”、“Those with the lowest score on the first question and high marks on the second are aversive relationships(在第一个问题上得分最低,在第二个问题上得分高的人是厌恶关系)”以及“Finally, anyone with a score of two or more on both scales is considered an ambivalent connection — your frenemies(最后,在两个量表上得分都在 2 分或以上的人被认为是矛盾关系 —— 你的亦敌亦友关系)”可知本文区分了四种我们社交网络中不同类型的关系,分析各个选项图表,B选项中清晰地呈现了四种不同的分类情况,横坐标代表第一个问题的得分情况,纵坐标代表第二个问题的得分情况,对应不同区域划分出了符合文中描述的四种人际关系类型,所以B选项正确地说明了我们社交网络中不同类型的人际关系,故选B项。
根据文章最后一段“I am resolved to be a little more mindful of my interactions with all my ties(我决心更加留意我与所有关系的互动)”以及“It also leads me to reflect on my own actions — am I ever the frenemy?(这也让我反思自己的行为 —— 我是否曾经也是别人眼中的亦敌亦友呢?)”
根据第一段“Among the members of my social network, a handful bring out mixed emotions — both eagerness and fear. Interactions with them feel like a conversational game of Russian roulette (轮盘赌). In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but if I catch them at the wrong moment, they can wipe out all my positive energy. There is simply no knowing what is to come. If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies(在社交圈中,有些人让我又期待又害怕。与他们相处就像玩俄罗斯轮盘赌,心情好时能享受欢乐时光,但若时机不对,他们的言行可能会让我感到沮丧。如果你也有这样的经历,那你可能也遇到过“假面朋友”)”、倒数第二段“Research suggests that ambivalent, love-hate relationships are often more stressful than consistently negative ones, damaging mental and physical health. Cutting off contact may not always be possible, especially if the person is a boss or family member. So, what can be done?( 研究表明,这种爱恨交织的矛盾关系往往比持续的负面关系更让人感到压力,对身心健康造成损害。如果这个人是你的上司或家庭成员,切断联系可能并不总是可行的。那么,我们该怎么办呢?)”以及最后一段“Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection. Personally, I use this insight to prepare myself emotionally, focus on the positives, and limit interactions when needed. It also leads me to reflect on my own actions — am I ever the frenemy? I am resolved to be a little more mindful of my interactions with all my ties(仅仅意识到关系的矛盾性就可能提供一些保护。
D
“Can you finish the work by the end of the day?” This question might cause anxiety for many employees. However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some individuals to complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.
In a study focused on retirement planning, volunteers completed a brief online survey under two different deadline conditions. One group had seven days to finish the survey, while the other was given 14 days. The researchers discovered that those facing the longer deadline often viewed the task as more difficult. Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and resources, they were also more likely to procrastinate and less likely to complete the assignment compared to those with shorter deadlines.
Recognizing that people frequently deal with multiple deadlines, researchers explored how individuals manage various tasks at the same time. The findings found a mental tendency: individuals often delay important tasks in favor of urgent but less significant ones. For example, many delay routine medical check-ups crucial for health in favor of rushing to a store for a limited-time sale. This occurs because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate satisfaction.
These patterns have significant results for managers and others involved in setting deadlines, Understanding these mental processes can help find strategies to enhance task completion rates. Short deadlines for urgent tasks tend to draw attention more effectively, leading to higher completion rates and reduced procrastination. On the other hand, longer deadlines can lead to excessive careful thought or distraction, resulting in incomplete work.
However, it’s essential to recognize that longer deadlines may still be necessary for complex tasks particularly when external factors, such as resource availability or cooperation, require additional time for proper completion. In such cases, a balanced approach is crucial: setting realistic deadlines that account for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes. By recognizing the minor differences of human motivation, individuals and organizations can develop effective strategies for task management.
12. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Finish quickly. B. Put off. C. Start early. D. Do carefully.
13. Why do people tend to delay important tasks for urgent ones?
A. Urgent tasks offer instant rewards.
B. Urgent tasks are more complicated.
C. Important tasks are less challenging.
D. Important tasks need multi-tasking.
14 How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcomes?
A. Set all tasks with shorter deadlines.
B. Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C. Balance task urgency and complexity.
D. Extend deadlines for significant tasks.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Role of Urgency in Task Completion
B. Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C. Influences of Delay on Work Quality
D. The Power of Deadlines in Task Management
B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第二段“Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and resources (虽然最后期限延长参与者最初投入了更多的时间和资源)”及“less likely to complete the assignment compared to those with shorter deadlines. (与截止日期较短的学生相比,完成任务的可能性较小。)”可知,此处通过although引导让步关系,表明主从句的转折意义,即延长截止日期会使参与者投入更多时间和资源,但可能会造成任务时间过长,即任务被拖延,并极有可能完不成任务。由此推断划线单词的含义是“拖延,延期”。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“This occurs because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate satisfaction.(这是因为重要任务感觉更复杂、更遥远,而紧急任务能提供即时的满足感。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“In such cases, a balanced approach is crucial: setting realistic deadlines that account for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes.(在这种情况下,平衡的方法至关重要:设定既考虑紧迫性又考虑复杂性的现实截止日期可以带来更好的结果。)”
根据第一段“However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some individuals to complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.(然而,最近的研究表明,较短的截止日期实际上可以帮助一些人更高效地完成任务,并让他们觉得工作量不那么可怕。)”
Conversations are like two-way streets: we take turns speaking and listening. While we often focus on what we say, there’s something profoundly positive in the act of listening. ___16___ But here’s where it gets tricky: being a good listener isn’t easy. It can be emotionally draining, especially in tough conversations.
My colleagues and I recently explored the downsides of listening in a study with school teachers. We asked the teachers how much effort they put into listening to their students. And we found that the more effort teachers put into listening, the more they reported feeling burned out. Why does this happen? For teachers, listening isn’t just about hearing words. ___17___ This can be incredibly draining, especially when teachers feel responsible for solving problems they may not have the resources or time to address.
This isn’t just a problem for teachers, it affects all of us. Whether we’re parents, partners, friends, or colleagues, we all find ourselves in situations where we have to listen to others’ worries and stresses. And without realizing it, we absorb that emotional weight. ___18___ In a world where we’ re constantly connected, we need to be aware of the emotional costs of listening.
___19___ First, focus on listening without planning your response. This keeps you present and allows the speaker to feel truly heard. Second, understand that sometimes listening is enough; don’t feel you have to fix the problem. ___20___ Finally, don’t always feel like you have to reflect. When someone is sharing a deeply negative experience, like the loss of loved ones, reflecting those emotions back to them may only deepen their pain.
Ultimately, while listening is one of the most powerful tools we have for connection, it’s important to know when to fully engage and when to take a step back to protect our own well-being.
A. So, how can we listen without burning out?
B. How can we fix their problems while listening?
C. Often, listening, even without taking action, is healing.
D. Over time, this emotional burden can wear us down, leading to burnout.
E. It involves absorbing their students’ emotional challenges and struggles.
F. As is often the case, attentive listening brings unintended bad consequences.
G. It can build trust, strengthen bonds, and expand our understanding of the world.
G 17. E 18. D 19. A 20. C
上文提到“While we often focus on what we say, there’s something profoundly positive in the act of listening.(虽然我们经常关注我们说了什么,但倾听的行为中有一些非常积极的东西)”说明倾听有积极的影响。 G选项“It can build trust, strengthen bonds, and expand our understanding of the world.(它可以建立信任,加强联系,并扩大我们对世界的理解)”正好阐述了倾听的积极作用,与上文形成连贯的论述,其中选项中的it指代前文提到的“倾听的行为”。
D选项“Over time, this emotional burden can wear us down, leading to burnout.(随着时间的推移,这种情感负担会让我们筋疲力尽,导致职业倦怠)”进一步说明了长期承受情感负担的后果,与上文形成连贯的论述。 其中选项中this emotional burden与上文的that emotional weight相呼应,符合语境。故选D。
上文提到“In a world where we’ re constantly connected, we need to be aware of the emotional costs of listening.(在一个我们不断相互联系的世界里,我们需要意识到倾听的情感成本)”说明倾听有情感成本,需要找到应对方法。 A选项“So, how can we listen without burning out?(那么,我们如何在不感到筋疲力尽的情况下倾听呢?)” Second,...Finally,...” 故选A。
上文提到“Second, understand that sometimes listening is enough; don’t feel you have to fix the problem.(第二,要明白有时倾听就足够了;不要觉得你必须解决问题)”说明倾听本身就是一种支持,不一定需要采取行动。

The year 2013 marked a turning point in my life. In June, my husband was offered a new Job in Ghana. Feeling that I had hit a career bottleneck as a photographer and copywriter (广告文字撰写人), I, without any hesitation, made the decision to relocate with him.
While my husband engaged in work, my visa didn’t grant me the same privilege. But that’s okay. I didn’t know what to do anyway. I was left isolated, homesick and lacking purpose. Our new home was a bungalow near a river that cut across expansive grasslands. With few people around our home, I turned to nature, which had been a fondness of mine since childhood. Every day, I would take my camera and wander around, photographing aimlessly.
It wasn’t long before September arrived, bringing the full flow of the rainy season. After one particularly bad thunderstorm, I found a finch (雀) — a poor little thing barely a month old with one wing broken — on the ground. Evidently, he had been abandoned by his flock, his nest blown from a tree. The sight was heartbreaking. He was the size of my lite finger. His eyes were tightly shut and he was shuddering, too young to survive alone. I somehow felt a connection with it. Immediately I scooped him up and cautiously placed him in a cardboard box with towels, mimicking a nest, and stayed up all night researching how to care for him.
The next day, he seemed to regain some energy. He woke with his mouth open, though still too weak to let out a call. I fed him some food and chirped (叽喳) at him. To my amusement, he chirped back and even climbed into my hand. I affectionately gazed at this adorable creature, who was now boldly pecking (啄) my fingers now and then. A surge of warmth ran through me. Tenderly stroking his feathers, I chirped a lullaby, singing him to sleep. Gradually, his eyes drooped and he drifted off. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene — as far as he was concerned, I was his mother.
Para 1. “I will take care of you.” I murmured, making my promise to him.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2. At that moment I realized that as I dedicated myself to the finch’s care, something within me changed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“I will take care of you.” I murmured, making my promise to him. The bond between us grew stronger with each passing day. I named him Sunny, as his bright yellow feathers brought a ray of sunshine into my life. Sunny became my constant companion, and I poured all my love and attention into nurturing him back to health. I researched tirelessly, learning about finch behavior, diet, and habitat. Every moment spent with Sunny was a precious gift, and I found purpose in providing him with the care and love he needed.
At that moment, I realized that as I dedicated myself to the finch's care, something within me changed. I discovered a newfound sense of fulfillment and purpose that had been missing from my life for so long. As I watched him grow stronger, his broken wing healing, I felt a renewed sense of hope and joy. The experience of nursing Sunny back to health inspired within me a desire to make a difference in the lives of animals and share their stories through my photography.

14. How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcomes?
A. Set all tasks with shorter deadlines.
B. Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C. Balance task urgency and complexity.
D. Extend deadlines for significant tasks.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Role of Urgency in Task Completion
B. Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C. Influences of Delay on Work Quality
D. The Power of Deadlines in Task Management

Para 2. At that moment I realized that as I dedicated myself to the finch’s care, something within me changed.
