Until recently most evenings, after my kid had finally fallen asleep, I would sink into the sofa, turn on Netflix, and watch episode after episode until either my exhaustion or my husband would call time on this pitiful sight. Turning the television off, I'd experience a surge of self-disgust at how dry my eyes felt, and disappointment that the whole evening had disappeared. I would be momentarily but overwhelmingly surprised by my re-entry into a world in which there were no socially-awkward-but-brilliant private detectives, but just a dishwasher that needed loading and a child who would be waking all too soon. I felt crushed by this return to my life.
I started to think more about what was happening as I turned the TV on — why I would plan to watch just one episode, but when I came to the end of it, I'd find myself unable to stop. It was as if I had no space in my mind to make any other choice; I was swallowing up episodes without digesting them, without even chewing them over, swallowing each one whole.
There is a way of consuming TV, and perhaps everything, that makes it very difficult to feel what the“right amount” is, because it is more about getting away from something, rather than digesting something. Of course, we all need a little escapism every now and then. But if we escape ourselves completely, and for too long, we can lose touch with the ordinary, deeply meaningful moments of our day-to-day lives, such as cooking a nice meal for dinner.
Between my child and my job and my odd detective TV shows, I have not been very good at cooking. Eating has come to feel like something I do to survive, rather than something I enjoy. I've lost my appetite—not in the sense of not being hungry, but in the sense of losing contact with a part of myself — my appetite for life. Recently, I decided to have a night off from watching TV. I didn't turn it on and I was amazed by how much time I had. I tidied the kitchen and felt satisfied by the ordinary, everyday experience of contributing something useful to family life, rather than escaping it. I felt I wanted more evenings like that, and not so many lost in TV. But does it have to be all or nothing? Or can I stay in contact with my appetite and find my way to an amount that feels right?
4. Why did the author feel disappointed when turning the TV off?
A. Because her eyes felt dry.
B. Because her child would wake soon.
C. Because the whole evening had been wasted.
D. Because her husband put an end to the night.
5. What may happen if we escape ourselves thoroughly?
A. Getting away from watching TV. B. Missing daily highlights.
C. Avoiding a chance to survive. D. Losing touch with detectives.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Self-reflective and sensible. B. Self-content and honest.
C. Thoughtful and modest. D. Talented and passionate.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. What is a wasteful night? B. How can you relax at night?
C. How can you regain your appetite for life? D. What do you feel exhausted about?
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者在晚上沉迷于看电视,导致对生活失去兴趣,最终通过反思和改变,重新找回对生活的热情的故事。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Turning the television off, I'd experience a surge of self-disgust at how dry my eyes felt, and disappointment that the whole evening had disappeared.(关掉电视后,我感到眼睛干涩,并因为整个晚上都消失了而感到失望)”可知,作者失望的原因是整个晚上都被浪费了。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“But if we escape ourselves completely, and for too long, we can lose touch with the ordinary, deeply meaningful moments of our day-to-day lives, such as cooking a nice meal for dinner.(但如果我们完全逃避自己,并且时间过长,我们可能会失去与日常生活中有意义的普通时刻的联系,比如做一顿美味的晚餐)”可推知,如果我们彻底逃避自己,可能会错过日常生活中的亮点。故选B
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“There is a way of consuming TV, and perhaps everything, that makes it very difficult to feel what the“right amount” is, because it is more about getting away from something, rather than digesting something. Of course, we all need a little escapism every now and then. But if we escape ourselves completely, and for too long, we can lose touch with the ordinary, deeply meaningful moments of our day-to-day lives, such as cooking a nice meal for dinner.(有一种消费电视的方式,也许是所有东西的方式,让人很难感觉到“适量”是什么,因为它更多的是为了远离一些东西,而不是消化一些东西。当然,我们都需要时不时地逃避现实。但是,如果我们完全逃避自我,而且时间过长,我们就会与日常生活中那些普通的、深刻意义的时刻失去联系,比如为晚餐做一顿美味的饭菜)”可知,作者通过反思自己的行为,意识到过度沉迷于电视剧的问题,并尝试改变,表现出一种自我反思和理智的态度。故选A。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Recently, I decided to have a night off from watching TV. I didn't turn it on and I was amazed by how much time I had. I tidied the kitchen and felt satisfied by the ordinary, everyday experience of contributing something useful to family life, rather than escaping it. I felt I wanted more evenings like that, and not so many lost in TV.(最近,我决定休息一个晚上,不看电视。我没有打开它,我惊讶于我还有这么多时间。我整理了厨房,为家庭生活贡献一些有用的东西,而不是逃避它,这种平凡的日常经历让我感到满足。我想要更多这样的夜晚,而不是沉迷于电视)”可知,主要讲述了作者在晚上沉迷于看电视,导致对生活失去兴趣,最终通过反思和改变,重新找回对生活的热情的故事。所以短文的标题为“怎样才能重获对生活的渴望?”。故选C。

Due to social events in recent years, the relationship between social media and teenagers mental health has been under heated discussion.
On Sept. 30, a British court decided that content on social media platforms led to the depression (抑郁) of 14-year-old Molly Russell. Russell interacted with 2,100 posts related to pessimistic (悲观) and self-harm in the six months, leading up to her depression, reported the Observer website.
The correlation has also been proved by science. A study in 2019 showed that the frequent use of social media by teenagers can lead to a decrease in their mental health.
So, how can we make sure that teenagers won’t get hurt while using social media? Chan,18, from the University of Macao shared her experience. Chan said that she one cam e across short videos romanticizing (浪漫化) mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. She immediately reported them to the platform.
But she said that the users’ power to control videos is still limited. “It is ultimately the responsibility of the social media platforms to get rid of content that is potentially harmful.” She also noticed that the age of social media users has become increasingly younger. Society should pay attention to this, she said. “Since it’s not possible to cut off access to social media for younger users, why not introduce a ‘supervision mode’ (监管模式) with which parents can regulate the content to be viewed by teenagers beforehand?” she said.
Wu Chengyu, 18, studies at Tianjin Experimental High School. He said that several years ago he came across a game that attracts teenagers to self-abuse and depression. He quickly chose to ignore it so he wouldn’t be influenced. This is the same way he reacts when exposed to negative content on social media.
In Wu’s opinion, teenagers today should improve their social media literacy (素养), telling real from fake and good from bad. “Also, everyone can be a content creator on social media.” he said. “We should all strengthen our awareness of ethics”.
8 What led to Russell’s depression according to a British court?
A. Her interaction with others online.
B. Negative information on social media platforms.
C. Short videos she watched on the Internet.
D. Her addiction to online posts.
9. Which of the following statements does Chan probably agree with?
A. A supervision mode ought to be introduced by parents.
B. The number of younger social media users should be limited.
C. It is the responsibility of the society to romanticize mental illnesses.
D. Parents should monitor the content to be viewed by teenagers in advance.
10. Who should be ultimately responsible for removing negative content according to Chan?
A. Parents. B. Schools.
C. Social media platforms. D. Content creators.
11. What does Wu suggest teenagers should do?
A. Use social media wisely. B. Reduce social media usage.
C. Stay away from online games. D. Learn more about social media.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A

Brazilian artist and activist Mundano recently painted an unusual mural (壁画) on a building in Sao Paulo. The paint included materials collected from natural disasters, such as ash from wildfires and mud from floods. Mundano hoped to draw global attention to climate change, as extreme weather events have been causing destruction across Brazil.
The large mural — over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide-shows the gray remains of trees on a brown land that is dry and cracked, representing the deforestation (滥伐森林) and serious drought in the Amazon rainforest.
The mural also shows local activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle of flowers around her head. She holds a sign that says: “Stop the destruction #keep your promise.” The artist says those messages are directed to Cargill, a US-based soybean (大豆) producer. Soy farming is one of the biggest causes of deforestation in the Amazon. Cargill says it will end deforestation in its supply chain in Brazil by 2025. Mundano is seeking to hold the company responsible for that promise.
In recent months, human-caused wildfires have severely damaged protected places in the Amazon area. Smoke spread over a very large area and affected the air quality in some Brazilian cities.
Drought has caused a terrible situation nationwide. On October 22, the depth of the Amazon’s Negro River measured (测量) 12.46 meters, showing a small increase from 10 days earlier, when the river was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago. But this last reported measure is still about 6 meters below normal for the same date in earlier years.
Earlier this year, a flood in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul killed more than 180people, affected over 2 million people, and destroyed city communities.
Mundano used mud from that flood to create the mural, ashes from Brazil’s fires in the Atlantic Forest, and clay from an Amazon village where Alessandra Korap is from. “From floods to droughts, everything is connected!” Mundano said in an interview.
12. What makes the mural unique?
A. Its size. B. Its paint. C. Its colors. D. Its audience.
13. Why does Mundano include Alessandra Korap in his mural?
A. To push Cargill to honor its promise. B. To celebrate Brazil’s natural beauty.
C. To draw attention to global warming. D. To show the importance of soybeans.
14. What can we learn about the Negro River?
A. A flood here took over 180 lives. B. Its depth hit a record low on Oct. 22.
C. It was 6.46m deep 122 years ago. D. It has suffered greatly from drought.
15. What is implied in Mundano’s actions and words in the last paragraph?
A. Climate disasters are closely related. B. The Amazon is home to great civilizations.
C. Natural materials are perfect for painting. D. Floods and droughts are the worst disasters.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. A

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However, it was soon that they realized that they couldn't solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their idea among youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges are and what advice they have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added, “keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.

Until recently, most evenings, after my kid had finally fallen asleep, I would sink into the sofa, turn on Netflix, and watch episode after episode until either my exhaustion or my husband would call time on this pitiful sight.
B Because her child would wake soon.
C
8. What led to Russell’s depression according to a British court?
A Her interaction with others online.

On October 22 the depth of the Amazon’s Negro River measured (测量) 12.46 meters, showing a small increase from 10 days earlier, when the river was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago.

While controlling all factors may be challenging, teachers can manage the materials on classroom walls to reduce distractions (分散注意力的事)。
____17____ A student’s working memory processes visual and verbal (口头的) information. Too many posters, regulations, or information sources can overload a student’s working memory, making it difficult to focus and process information.
____18____ The average preschool is overloaded with labels, lists, and rules, which can decrease children’s ability to focus and learn. Decorations are sometimes mistaken for quality. Experts point out that reading and writing performances are particularly affected by levels of stimulation, while math benefits from student-centered and personalized classroom designs. Involving students in designing their learning space can give them a sense of ownership and pride. ____19____
The color of the classroom is another critical factor. Red and orange can make students feel nervous, while blue and green are calming. Younger children may respond well to bright colors like yellow, but older students benefit from light shades of blue and green. The International Association of Color Consultants North America emphasizes the importance of appropriate color design for creating conducive (有利的) learning environments and promoting health. ____20____ Such settings are likely to cause students to become uninterested in learning.
