Little Samantha Peszek LOVED gymnastics (体操), more
than toys, even more than ice cream.
When she was just five years old, she watched the
Olympics for the first time with her parents. Of course, her
favorite part was the gymnastics competition. It was right then
and there that Samantha had a dream. “I’m going to be an
Olympian!” she shouted with excitement.
“Dream BIG, Samantha! If you have a strong will, you can
achieve ANYTHING.” her parents added.
▲ In order not to forget her big plan to be the very best,
she even had her mum help her hang the word DREAM up in her
room. Samantha trained very hard and soon found she was great
at all of the events except the balance beam (平衡木).
“I couldn’t do it, mum!”
“My dear, you have to have the bad days to enjoy the good days. Come on!”
Again, Samantha kept fighting. That meant it was time to continue to try at that terrible
balance beam. With her coach’s help and her parents’ support, Samantha felt unbeatable.
Four years later, when it was time to get her big chance as an Olympian, Samantha made a
couple of mistakes.
“I’m so mad I didn’t win.” Samantha cried.
Her mum looked at her, “We don’t love you for you win. We love you because you are

terrible happened.
Samantha hurt her ankle (脚踝) before the competition!

Years ago, Maja Matarić, a computer scientist, wanted to create a robot to help her in
working with children. For effective human interaction (互动), the robot needed a face. However,
she didn’t want it to look too much like a human because she thought that would make people
scared.
Some scientists think that when robots look nearly, but not quite, human, they can scare
people away. Their skin may not move naturally, their eyes might not light up when they laugh,
and their smiles could look fake (假的). That makes them seem alive but not quite natural, just
like a zombie (僵尸).
Dave Hanson feels differently. His company designs robots with faces made of a special
rubbery (有弹性的) fake skin. The skin can crease (皱起) like human skin .
Hanson’s robots are also able to copy expressions(表情 ). With camera eyes, the robot can
know whether you’re happy or puzzled by watching your smiling mouth or a crease in your
forehead. It then show you similar facial expressions.
While people might find robot faces scary at first, Hanson
believes that they can soon get used to it. He thinks if robots are
going to work closely with humans, they should look as much like
us as possible, as our faces are an important part of the way we
communicate.
九年级英语 第 7 页 共 10 页
Matarić, however, argues that robot faces don’t need to look a lot like us. Her research shows
that people can enjoy interacting with robots whether or not they look human. Our brains are
wired (生来就会)to hunt for faces, so we can easily find them even in simple shapes, such as two
circles on top of a robot’s body.
▲ If a robot turns its head or eyes toward something, it gives humans a clue that the
machine will move in that direction.
Matarić’s team designed their robot, Bandit, with a simple face. On its face you can see big
eyes, wiggling (扭动的 ) eyebrows and red lips that can make different shapes. Moving just the
eyebrows and lips lets Bandit express many feelings: surprise, calm, happiness, even anger.
Matarić says that as robots play a bigger role in our lives, we would become more used to
different robot faces.
56. Why didn’t Maja Matarić want the robot to look too much like a human?
A. Because she was afraid people would not like to interact with it.
B. Because she disliked working with robots with scary faces.
C. Because she thought people would get scared by its face.
D. Because she thought designing a robot with a face requires much effort.
57. Paragraphs 3 to 5 mainly show that having human-like faces may make it easier for robots to
__________.
A.read humans’ feelings B. crease like humans
C.attract more people D. communicate with humans
58. What does the underlined word “copy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A . explain B. control C. explore D. follow
59.Which sentence may be the best to fill in the “ ▲ ”?
A. However, whether robots look like humans matters a lot in daily communication.
B. Since humans are born with special abilities, we can find robots without a face in a short time.
C. Even so, having some kind of face can help a robot communicate better.
D. Anyway, having a face in a simple shape makes robots look like humans.
60. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Should robots have human-like faces? B. What face will you give your robot?
C. Is it necessary for robots to act like humans? D. Do we need to design more human-like robots?
D
①As someone who’s been studying English for many years now, you might think you know
the English language pretty well. But if you heard a British person say by accident, “A Billy left
some bees and honey in my sherbet (冰冻果露 ) last night,” would you understand what they
meant? Probably not, and many native speakers may not know what this person was saying either.
②The example above was a sentence that a London taxi driver might say to another member
of his or her tribe. In fact, the sentence would be, “A customer left some money in my cab last
night.”
③So, what exactly is meant by “tribe”? A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed
out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe. This is a group that defines (定义) who we are and
even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its own “secret language”, as the BBC called it. If
you work in a certain industry-education, for example, you may use slang words (俚语 ) and
九年级英语 第 8 页 共 10 页
acronyms (首字母缩略词) that only other people who work in that industry would understand. Or
if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark in the city, which
only locals would understand.
④These so-called secret languages each have their own fascinating history. In the US, for
example, the underground “ballroom” (舞厅 ) tribe of 1970s and 80s New York City and its
language were showed in the 2018 FX show Pose.
⑤These secret words don’t always stay within their tribes, however. Words from many tribes,
especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop, often enter people’s everyday vocabulary. For
example, the phrase “to have beef” — meaning “to be in a conflict (冲突) ” —was made popular
by US rappers. Today, it’s widely used by native English speakers all over the world.
⑥As BBC reporter Susie Dent wrote, “We are all surrounded by amazing secret languages,
full of history and stories and in-jokes. And one thing is certain: our tribal conversations will never
run out.”
61. The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used ________.
A. to compare the local language with the standard language
B. to explain what is the exact meaning of tribes in London
C. to teach readers how to communicate with London taxi drivers
D. to show the languages of tribes are often difficult to understand
62. Why are the underground “ballroom” tribe mentioned ?
A. To show their special way of dancing. B. to prove secret languages have their own history.
C. To introduce the following popular TV show Pose. D. To stress the importance of tribes .
63. What can we know about “secret languages”?
A. They mostly came from musical cultures.
B. Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation.
C. They first started in London in the 1980s.
D. They have failed to become popular among young people.
64. What is Dent’s attitude towards the future of secret languages?
A. Confident. B. Worried. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
65. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A.①②③/④⑤/⑥ B.①/②③④⑤/⑥ C.①②/③④⑤/⑥ D.①②/③④/⑤⑥

them. It can be a good way to sell them to earn money and support a green lifestyle.
•Want to prepare for your future career? Begin practicing now. Are you skilled in dancing?
Maybe you can give younger children dancing lessons during holidays.
