Passage 1
Success Requires “Ample Doses of Pain”
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, has a simple message for young people who want to achieve greatness: No pain, no gain. That was essentially his message for students at his alma mater, Stanford University, where he made a speech at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
“Greatness is not intelligence. 1 And character isn’t formed out of smart people; it’s formed out of people who suffered,” Huang said in response to a question about how students can maximize their shot at being successful.
2 In 1993, he co-founded computer chip company Nvidia, where he’s served as CEO for more than three decades. The company’s success turned Huang into a billionaire. Now, with Nvidia’s chips in high demand for building AI software, it’s become one of the world’s most valuable companies with a valuation worth of $2 trillion.
“One of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations,” Huang said, noting that most Stanford graduates have very high expectations as a result of having an elite education. Often people with very high expectations have very low resilience because they are not accustomed to, or prepared for, failure. “ 3 I don’t know how to teach it to you except for I hope suffering happens to you,” he said. Psychologists also tend to agree that resilient people are more likely to have the strength and confidence to handle challenges and bounce back from failure. Huang certainly had to struggle in his company’s early days.
“To this day I use the phrase ‘pain and suffering’ inside our company with great joy,” Huang told the Stanford students. “ 4 You want greatness out of it.”
A.Greatness comes from character.
B.Unfortunately, resilience matters in success.
C.Building character is a key factor in determining success.
D.When it comes to achieving success, Huang knows more than most.
E.That’s why I still worry Nvidia could ultimately fail, despite its massive success.
F.I mean that in a happy way, because you want to refine the character of your company.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.F

1.根据上文的““Greatness is not intelligence.(伟大不是智慧。)”和下文的“And character isn’t formed out of smart people; it’s formed out of people who suffered,” Huang said in response to a question about how students can maximize their shot at being successful.(“性格并不来自聪明的人;它是由经历过苦难的人造就的。”在回答有关学生如何最大限度地获得成功的问题时,黄说。)”可知,A项(伟大源于性格。)承接上文,回答了伟大来自哪里,下文解释性格来自哪里。故选A项。
2.根据下文的“In 1993, he co-founded computer chip company Nvidia, where he’s served as CEO for more than three decades. The company’s success turned Huang into a billionaire. Now, with Nvidia’s chips in high demand for building AI software, it’s become one of the world’s most valuable companies with a valuation worth of $2 trillion.(1993年,他与人共同创立了计算机芯片公司英伟达,并在该公司担任了30多年的首席执行官。公司的成功让黄成为了亿万富翁。现在,英伟达的芯片在构建人工智能软件方面需求旺盛,它已经成为世界上最有价值的公司之一,估值达到2万亿美元。)”可知,黄仁勋作为英伟达公司的首席执行官,他懂得很多促使创业成功的经验,D项(谈到成功,黄比大多数人都懂得多。)能够作为话题句,引领下文。故选D项。
3.根据上文的““One of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations,” Huang said, noting that most Stanford graduates have very high expectations as a result of having an elite education. Often people with very high expectations have very low resilience because they are not accustomed to, or prepared for, failure. (黄说:“我最大的优势之一就是期望值很低。”他指出,由于接受了精英教育,大多数斯坦福大学毕业生的期望值都很高。通常,期望很高的人的适应力很低,因为他们不习惯失败,也没有为失败做好准备。)”和下文的“I don’t know how to teach it to you except for I hope suffering happens to you,” he said. Psychologists also tend to agree that resilient people are more likely to have the strength and confidence to handle challenges and bounce back from failure. Huang certainly had to struggle in his company’s early days.(他说:“我不知道怎么教你,我只希望你遭受苦难。”
4.根据上文的““To this day I use the phrase ’pain and suffering’ inside our company with great joy,” Huang told the Stanford students.(黄对斯坦福大学的学生们说:“直到今天,在我们公司里,我都很高兴地使用‘痛苦和磨难’这个词。”)”和下文的“You want greatness out of it.(你想从中获得伟大。)”
Passage 2
Monarch Butterflies Listed as Endangered
The monarch butterfly, known for its legendary migration from Mexico to Canada, is now at great risk of extinction. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the population of this orange-and-black insect has shrunk between 23% and 72% over the past 10 years. IUCN has labeled it as being endangered after having added it to its Red List of Threatened Species.
5 . In order to make space for agriculture and urban development, people have been illegally cutting down trees. As a result, the massive forested areas that had previously sheltered the butterflies during winter have now been destroyed.
Another factor at play is the use of herbicides (除草剂) in agricultural fields. 6 . Just before leaving their overwintering grounds, females lay eggs on milkweed plants. But now milkweed is disappearing, and monarch caterpillars are losing their host plants.
Climate change has also taken a heavy toll on the species. 7 . What’s worse, severe weather conditions such as hurricanes and storms are proving to be disastrous for the already vulnerable butterflies.
Monarch experts are calling for the public’s help in the fight to save the species. “Few species inspire the awe and wonder that the migratory monarch butterfly commands,” said Dr. Sean T. O’Brien, President and CEO of Nature Serve. “While efforts to protect this species are encouraging, much is still needed to ensure its long-term survival.”
What can be done to case the problem? A middle-of-the-road solution is gaining ground. Scientists recommend promoting the growth of native milkweed and nectar flowers. Monarch butterflies are a common backyard insect in America, so everyone can contribute their share. — 8 . They can also plant flowers for monarchs. — Those flowers will provide nectar for monarchs when they bloom.
A.People can plant milkweed to support their egg-laying and caterpillars.
B.When they are caterpillars (幼虫), monarchs entirely depend on milkweed.
C.Hence, local people should maintain thick forests and reduce the use of pesticides within the monarch’s range.
D.The reasons for the threat to monarchs are varied, but the leading one is the decades-long destruction of its habitats.
E.In a one-two punch, droughts have limited the growth of milkweed, thus threatening the butterflies’ overwintering habitats.
F.To help ensure the survival of monarchs, the habitats of the Monarch butterfly need to be protected and conserved.
【答案】5.D 6.B 7.E 8.A

How to Start Your Podcast
Do you have a favorite podcast? That can be a difficult question to answer for some as there are so many options. That is because the world is full of interesting topics and thoughts about them. 17
A podcast is a series of audio episodes that cover a particular subject. The first step to creating a podcast is to find your topic. It is believed that the best topics are ones about which you know a lot and love.
Another important step is to make sure you have the right equipment. While podcast equipment can be complex and expensive, it doesn’t have to be. 18 You can record all of your audio on your phone. Then with your computer — and the right software — you can mix the audio. This is the process of putting your audio together into one perfect sounding file.
After you have your topic and equipment, you’ll want to choose your format (形式,格式). 19 Your podcast could also include more than one of these options.
Once you’ve decided, you can start drafting your episodes. However, whatever format or formats you choose, maintain the same structure for each episode. The next step is to find a quiet place and do your recording.
When you’ve completed your recording and audio mixing, you’ll need to find a platform for your podcast. Luckily there are plenty of free and paid platform options on which to upload your podcast. Before uploading, make sure you have an interesting title and good tags for your show. 20 You want to get the word out about your podcast to grow your audience. Your podcast just might become someone’s new favorite.
A.For your first podcast, you can simply rely on your phone and computer.
B.No one is going to make good content just by opening their mouth.
C.Your podcast could be one person speaking, two persons conversing, or many people offering their opinions.
D.Good podcasts connect because they’re focused on a topic and because their hosts are able to deliver a voice and perspective that is unique.
E.If you feel you have something engaging and valuable to share, start a podcast.
F.Be sure to post about your show on social media and get your podcast listed in a podcast directory.

18.根据上文“While podcast equipment can be complex and expensive, it doesn’t have to be.(虽然播客设备可能既复杂又昂贵,但它并非必须如此)”以及下文“You can record all of your audio on your phone.(你可以使用手机录制所有的音频)”可知,此处上下文说的是播客设备不必复杂和昂贵,只要用手机就可以,与A项“For your first podcast, you can simply rely on your phone and computer.(对于你的第一档播客,你只要依靠你的手机和电脑)”表达的含义一致,故选A项。
19.根据上文“After you have your topic and equipment, you’ll want to choose your format (形式,格式).(在你确定了话题和设备之后,你会想选择你的格式)”可知,此处上下文说的是播客的形式,与C项“Your podcast could be one person speaking, two persons conversing, or many people offering their opinions.(你的播客可以是一个人在讲话,两个人在对话,或者许多人在提供他们的观点)”表达的含义一致,故选C项。
When you’ve completed your recording and audio mixing, you’ll need to find a platform for your podcast. Passage 6
Everyone knows that running is a good way to stay in shape. The simplicity of running appeals to many people. You don’t need a lot of complicated or expensive equipment; you just need a good pair of running shoes. Well, that idea is changing. 21
This is not a surprise to the Tarahumara Indians, who live in northwest Mexico. The rough terrain (地势) in their area makes it easier to travel on foot than by horse or by car. Traditionally, the Tarahumara were hunters. They follow their prey over long distances, sometimes, for days, until the animals became exhausted. 22 They are known for their endurance, running races of 50 miles or longer. When Tarahumara athletes ra n in the marathon at the 1968 Olympics, they didn’t understand that the race was over after only 26.2 miles, so they kept running. “Too short, too short,” they complained.
But here is the amazing part: Tarahumara runners don’t wear running shoes. Tarahumara shoes are very simple. The sole (鞋底) is a piece of rubber held to the foot with homemade belt. These rubber soles protect against sharp objects, but they don’t provide any support or cushioning.
How is it possible that some of the best runners in the world don’t wear running shoes? Scientific studies are beginning to point to something the Tarahumara have known for centuries: Human beings are built for running barefoot. In a recent study, researchers used a video camera to examine how athletes run when they are barefoot. 23 When they do this, the arch (足弓) of foot absorbs the impact. Then that force is redirected back up through the leg.
24 Walk into a sporting goods store today and you will find sections that are devoted to the shoes using the simplest structure. With a thin sole and heel, they are designed to be the shoes that feel like no shoes. The increasing number of these shoes on the market is evidence of this new trend. It is clear that shoe companies and runners are beginning to accept the wisdom of Tarahumara — barefoot may be the best.
A.The study revealed that barefoot runners land on the middle of their foot.
B.Some researchers suggest that perhaps you do not need shoes at all.
C.As a result, for the Tarahumara, running very long distances became part of daily life.
D.Many of these shoes have higher heels that are equipped with special materials.
E.As the force of impact drives the foot toward the ground, the arch flattens and expands.
F.In response to this research, shoe companies started to reconsider the design of running shoes.
【答案】21.B 22.C 23.A 24.F
21.上文“You don’t need a lot of complicated or expensive equipment; you just need a good pair of running shoes. Well, that idea is changing (你不需要很多复杂或昂贵的设备;你只需要一双好跑鞋。这个想法正在改变)”说明“跑步需要好鞋”这个想法在发生改变,以及下文第三段“But here is the amazing part: Tarahumara runners don’t wear running shoes. (但令人惊奇的是:塔拉乌马拉的跑步者不穿跑鞋)”举例来说明或许跑步不需要穿鞋子,因此B项“一些研究人员建议,也许你根本不需要鞋子”符合语境,故选B。
22.上文“They follow their prey over long distances, sometimes, for days, until the animals became exhausted. (他们跟随猎物长途跋涉,有时长达数天,直到动物筋疲力尽)”说明他们会跑很长的路是他们生活的一部分。因此C项“因此,对于塔拉乌马拉人来说,跑很长的距离成了日常生活的一部分”符合语境,故选C。
23.上文“In a recent study, researchers used a video camera to examine how athletes run when they are barefoot. (在最近的一项研究中,研究人员使用摄像机检查运动员赤脚跑步的情况)”说明研究人员分析运动员赤脚跑步时脚部的运动特点,A项“研究显示,赤脚跑步者是脚中部着地”是脚部运动特点之一,故选A。
24.下文“Walk into a sporting goods store today and you will find sections that are devoted to the shoes using the simplest structure. With a thin sole and heel, they are designed to be the shoes that feel like no shoes. (今天走进一家体育用品店,你会发现一些区域专门销售结构最简单的鞋子。由于鞋底和鞋跟很薄,它们被设计成感觉没有鞋穿的鞋子)”说明制鞋公司在鞋子的设计上有了变化,因此F项“作为对这项研究的回应,制鞋公司开始重新考虑跑鞋的设计”符合语境,故选F。
Passage 7
Human Being or Human Doing?
During my seemingly-endless career as a high school teacher, not even once have I woken up in the morning, realizing that it’s the beginning of a new week, joyfully posted a Wechat Moment and said “Thank God! It’s Monday again!”
25 . I learned this through a series of recent events where some people of my age whom I have known for years all bragged about their being super busy and took huge pride in working all the time. Although I can relate to their ambition to change the world, I am not quite sure whether that world in their mouth will change for the better or the worse.
Welcome to hustle culture Now we all live in a society that encourages us to equate our work with our intrinsic value as human beings. 26 . Workers should love what they do and then promote that love on social media, thus taking the standard of a qualified employee to a whole new level.
It is not hard to view hustle culture as a swindle And the vast majority of people beating the drums of hustle-mania (狂热) are not the people who do the actual work. Sooner or later, employees will have to decide for themselves if they embrace or reject this culture of overwork.

A.However, the gloomy employment prospect in recent years has significantly reduced the bargaining power of workers.
B.Apparently, that makes me slightly different from people of my generation.
C.After all, persuading a generation of workers to work their heads off is convenient for those at the top.

E.In this new work culture, enduring or even merely liking one’s job is no longer enough.
F.Furthermore, all that nonstop work will lead to exhaustion and burnout, which can have lasting harmful consequences.
【答案】25.B 26.E 27.C 28.A
25.由后文“I learned this through a series of recent events where some people of my age whom I have known for years all bragged about their being super busy and took huge pride in working all the time. Although I can relate to their ambition to change the world, I am not quite sure whether that world in their mouth will change for the better or the worse. (我是通过最近的一系列事件了解到这一点的,在这些事件中,一些我认识多年的同龄人都在吹嘘他们超级忙,并且一直以工作为荣。虽然我能理解他们改变世界的雄心壮志,但我不太确定他们口中的世界会变得更好还是更坏。)”可知,作者与很多人不同,故B选项“Apparently, that makes me slightly different from people of my generation. (显然,这使我与我这一代人略有不同)”能引起下文,符合题意。故选B。
26.由上文“Welcome to hustle culture (过劳文化). Now we all live in a society that encourages us to equate our work with our intrinsic value as human beings. (欢迎来到过劳文化。现在我们都生活在一个鼓励我们把工作和我们作为人的内在价值等同起来的社会里。)”可知,本空要说跟这种新的工作文化有关的话题,由后文“Workers should love what they do and then promote that love on social media, thus taking the standard of a qualified employee to a whole new level. (员工应该热爱自己的工作,然后在社交媒体上宣传这种热爱,从而将合格员工的标准提升到一个全新的水平。)”可知,本空要说这种新的工作文化的要求,故E选项“In this new work culture, enduring or even merely liking one’s job is no longer enough. (员工迟早要自己决定是接受还是拒绝这种过度工作的文化。)”可知,本空要说跟“员工决定”有关的话题,由后文“It is no longer considered embarrassing to re-post whatever their companies have posted on Wechat. On some level, one has to respect the hustlers who see a dismal (令人沮丧的) system and understand that success in it requires total, shameless buy-in. (转发他们公司在微信上发布的任何内容不再被认为是尴尬的。在某种程度上,人们必须尊重那些看到一个糟糕体系的骗子,他们明白,要想在这个体系中取得成功,就必须彻底、无耻地买进。)”可知,员工没有能力决定自己的态度,故A选项“However, the gloomy employment prospect in recent years has significantly reduced the bargaining power of workers. (然而,近年来就业前景黯淡,大大降低了工人的议价能力。)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选A。
Passage 8
Globalization is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place. Globalization also captures in its scope the economic and social changes that have come about as a result
When did globalization begin? 29 As with future globalizing booms, new technologies played a key role in the Silk Road trade. Advances in metal working led to the creation of coins; advances in transportation led to the building of roads connecting the major empires of the day.
Unquestionably, these types of exchanges were accelerated in the Age of Exploration, when European explorers seeking new sea routes to the spices and silks of Asia bumped into the Americas instead. 30 New ship designs and the creation of the magnetic compass were key to the explorers’ successes.
The web of globalization continued to spin out through the Age of Revolution, when ideas about liberty and equality spread like fire from America to France to Latin America and beyond. 31
With the Information Age globalization went into overdrive. Advances in computer and communications technology launched a new global era and redefined what it meant to be “connected.” Modern communications satellites meant the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo could be watched in the United States for the first time. 32 In the modern era economic success or failure at one focal point of the global web can be felt in every major world economy.
A.Along with Chinese silk, Roman glass, and Arabian spices, many ideas and the secrets of paper- making also spread via these pathways of trade.
B.This digital revolution massively impacted economies across the world as well: they became more information-based and more interdependent.
C.It rode the waves of industrialization, colonization, and war through the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, powered by the invention of factories, railways, steamboats, cars, and planes.
D.The Silk Road, an ancient network of trade routes across China, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean used between 50 B.C. and 250 C. E. , is perhaps the most well-known early example of exchanging ideas, products, and customs.
E.Trade and idea exchange now extended to a previously unconnected part of the world.
F.Again, technology played an important role in the maritime trade routes that flourished between old and newly discovered continents.
【答案】29.D 30.F 31.C 32.B

Passage 9
What I Think of Boxing as a Sport
Boxing is a popular sport. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. It could be the toughest of all sports to survive. It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer. 33 .
It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer. This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves. 34 They do that because the boxer comes from their own country, and if “their” boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it.
35 Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets, a kind of strong hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences.Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring. Besides, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing. They are usually in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.
To conclude, I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing. 36 We can celebrate more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes in our society. I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.
A.However, boxing can be a very dangerous sport.
B.Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer.
C.In boxing, fighters are required to hit a moving target.
D.Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition.
E.Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes.
F.I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV.

Passage 3
How to Survive High School
It may feel impossible to survive even a day of high school, let alone three years. However, there are a lot of things you can do to make your high school experience one of the best times of your life.
9 During high school, you may feel under pressure to fit in. You need to try your best to fight the negative feelings and learn to have a change. High school actually gives you an opportunity to discover a real YOU and grow as a person, but it's important that any change should come from within.
Make friends with a variety of people. Try to break out of your comfort zone by starting a conversation with people, especially strangers. 10 Over time, you'll develop a friend group filled with unique individuals that like you for who you are and add a lot of value to your life. But do remember — Stay away from the ones who hold negative attitudes towards everything.
Spare regular time for exercise. 11 However, even if you're not involved in a sport, try to exercise every day. Though you may feel like your study schedule is jam-packed, remember that staying fit will help improve your school performance.
Don't avoid interacting with your teachers. You don't have to be a teacher's pet, though. 12 If possible, spend a few minutes before or after class talking with your teachers about things related to their subject.
With these tips to survive high school, you will surely be proud of graduating as an all-round approaching adult.
A.Let yourself be who you really are.
B.Learn to change and impress your friends.
C.Everybody has something to contribute to your growth as a person.
D.Pressure from friends is one factor that turns teenagers into risk-takers.
E.Try your best to be kind and friendly to everybody you take a class from.
F.Joining a school sports team is also a great way to meet like-minded people.
Passage 4
The worst time to look for a job is when you feel desperate and must have a new one immediately. 13 If you are not in need of an immediate career change, here are ways you can improve your long-ter career prospects today:
Identify at least two different roles. You do not have to be qualified for these positions today, nor do they have to exist in your company. However, these roles should be related to your current skill set. They are career options that look interesting. 14 Pay close attention to what appeals to you, and write it down. This will give insight into your motivations and targets. Subscribe to a career specific magazine. Knowledge is power in the workplace. All businesses must stay relevant to their customers in order to win the competitions and increase revenue (收益), Reading about industry trends, advancements and success stories keeps you in touch with market conditions. This information allows you to see which companies and professionals are leading the pack. You can follow their examples in your own workplace. 15
Do exceptional work. In any role, there is a way to perform at your best. Look for ways to deliver a top performance. Show up early, be flexible to new assignments, have a positive attitude, cooperate with other departments, pay attention to the little details.
Be professionally curious. Talk to people about their careers. Learn more about how success measured in other roles, departments and companies, Ask people their thoughts on different industries. 16 People hire people. You never know what connections may be relevant when you start your next job search, so develop a habit of making good connections no matter where you go. Take the time to learn about others, and be helpful when you can.
As in all things in life, getting in front of a difficult task early is always less stressful than reacting to a career surprise. Changing jobs is to be expected. No matter how secure you feel today, the time will come when either you or your employer decide it is time to change.
A.lf you associate with distinguished people, you are likely to find yourself with better opportunities.
B.Challenge yourself to expand your business knowledge through interactions with people at regular time.

Passage 5
28 . It is no longer considered embarrassing to re-post whatever their companies have posted on Wechat. On some level, one has to respect the hustlers who see a dismal (令人沮丧的) system and understand that success in it requires total, shameless buy-in.
If we are doomed to overwork until we die, we may at least die with dignity. Stop pretending to love Mondays!
A.However, the gloomy employment prospect in recent years has significantly reduced the bargaining power of workers.
B.Apparently, that makes me slightly different from people of my generation.
C.After all, persuading a generation of workers to work their heads off is convenient for those at the top.
D.Hustle culture can negatively affect people’s personal relationships as they favor the hustle over the connections with others.
E.In this new work culture, enduring or even merely liking one’s job is no longer enough.
F.Furthermore, all that nonstop work will lead to exhaustion and burnout, which can have lasting harmful consequences.
Passage 10
Students’ Journey to Empower Rural Heritage
From Aug. 18 to 22 a team of 15 Tsinghua University students, representing diverse backgrounds from China, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, set foot on an overseas research exploration focusing on rural revitalization(振兴) in Indonesian villages, particularly within Nusa Tenggara Barat(NTB).
With the diverse cultural heritage, Indonesia is home to over 83,000 villages, each radiating its own charm and character. 37
The research mission took the students to Sukarara and Sade villages, two of NTB’s tourist destinations. 38 Sukarara and Sade are a world apart from the busy cities to which most of us are accustomed. The villages are a living test to Indonesia’s rich culture and its devotion to preserving traditions. The Revitalizing these villages goes beyond mere economic development. 39 The weaving skills and architectural techniques of Sukarara and Sade villages are not only beautiful, but they are also an inseparable part to the identity of these communities. It’s essential that they strike a balance between progress and preservation.
As the journey came to an end, the students carry with them not only the memories of their experiences there, but also the responsibility to make a positive impact on these remarkable places. 40 They are optimistic that Indonesian villages can experience meaningful development, ultimately leading to increased opportunities for employment and an improved quality of life.
A.While these villages possess undeniable fascination, many remain underdeveloped.
B.This effort includes the knowledge exchange between the students and local villagers
C.Both were selected for revitalization efforts led by the Village Revitalization Team.
D.In Sukarara, a local tradition requires girls master weaving skills before marriage
E.They decide to be a bridge between tradition and progress, united for their growth
F.It’s about preserving the cultural heritage and ensuring traditions being passed down
