Passage 1
I didn’t realize it, but during that short walk home I had lost a whole lot of weight and my eyes had grown dull and colorless. When my mom saw me she screamed out in surprise. Staring at me in disbelief, she asked, “Are you Fugui?”
Looking at my mom, I forced a smile and nodded my head. Shocked, she uttered something else, but I was no longer paying attention to her. I pushed the door open and went into my room. Jiazhen, in the middle of combing her hair, was also taken back when she saw me. She gazed at me with her mouth gaping. As soon as I thought of how I had beaten her when she came to persuade me to go home the night before, I fell to the ground and, kneeling before her, muttered, “Jiazhen, I’m finished.”
After speaking those words I began to cry out loud. Jiazhen rushed over to help me up, but being pregnant with Youqing, how could she support me? She called my mom over, and the two of them pulled me onto the bed. I looked like a corpse. They were scared to death and began patting me on the shoulder and rocking my head.
My mother appeared dumbstruck; she stared at me with a look of intensity and asked, “What did you say?”
“I’ve lost everything,” I repeated.
The look on my face convinced her. My mother sat down on the floor and, wiping her tears, said, “If the upper beam is no straight, the lower ones will not go straight either.”
Even then my mother still loved me. She didn’t blame me. Instead she blamed my father.
Jiazhen also cried. She patted me on the shoulder and tried to console me. “As long as you don’t gamble anymore, everything will be all right.”
I had nothing left. Even if I had wanted to gamble, I wouldn’t have had any money to stake a bet. I heard Dad in the next room shooting off his foul mouth. He still didn’t know that he was penniless — he was simply annoyed at being disturbed by the two women crying. As soon as she heard my father’s voice, Mom stopped crying. She stood up and walked out, with Jiazhen following her. I knew that they were going into my father’s room, and after a while I heard my dad begin screaming, “Bastard!”
It was just then that my daughter, Fengxia, pushed the door open and came in. She closed the door and in a shrill voice said, “Dad, hurry up and hide! Grandpa’s going to beat you.”
I just stared at her without moving a muscle. She then came over and tried pulling me away by the hand; when I wouldn’t budge she began to cry. Seeing Fengxia cry was like having a knife pierce my heart. Even at such a young age, Fengxia was trying to protect her dad. Just looking at her made me feel like I deserved to be cut to pieces.

Passage 2
I passed one of my US colleagues and gave her a friendly greeting. Her reply was anything but friendly.
“What?"
“Er. You all right? ", I tried again.
She looked at me blankly. Then suddenly the cloud seemed to lift from her mind.
"Oh", she said, "You mean, how am I doing?" I thought you meant I had something on my face!”
As a British person coming to Beijing, I knew there would be cultural and language barriers between Chinese people and myself.
What I wasn't expecting were the cultural and language barriers between other English-speaking foreigners and myself.
Before the 2012 London Olympic Games, the Daily Mail newspaper published a guide to British English for Americans. Some of their examples were: Those are 'chips that go with your burger, instead of fries. You'd like some potato chips? Those are crisps. And: The best way to travel around the city during the Olympics will be by the underground, the rail network commonly known as the tube. It is not the subway ---that is a pedestrian(行人的) underpass.”
Any conversation I have with an American is proof of why a guide like this is necessary. British people usually know the American versions of words from TV or films (sorry-movies), but Americans never seem to have enough knowledge about British English.
The trouble is, it's not just Americans. When I speak English to non-English speakers I never know whether they have learned British or American English. When they say “chips”, for example, do they mean “French fries” or “potato chips”?
I can't help thinking back to the Daily Mail article: When you talk about pant in Britain, that means underwear. Trousers is the more appropriate term.
However, even though British English may have come first, around the world, the American way of spelling is getting more popular
Last month a survey released by US social media platform Steemit showed that English publications now largely use the American spelling, swapping words like “centre” for “center”. So it comes as no surprise that everyone I know just says “pants”.

A.show how she gets along with American colleagues in the office
B.explain how to clear up misunderstandings between colleagues
C.introduce the differences between British and American English

6.The underlined sentence "the cloud seemed to lift from her mind" means________.
A.she became confident of herself
B.she was not sure what to do next
C.she felt excited for what she heard
D.she came to understand the situation
7.Which of the following is most probably the author's idea?
A.British people don't care much about American English
B.Non-English speakers can't tell British English from American English
C.Non-native speakers seem to prefer American English to British English
D.A knowledge of differences between American and British English is very important in communication
8.The author is__________ language differences
A.pleased at B.troubled by C.careless about D.fascinated with

Passage 4
Do you have bright ideas? Ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes but we don’t often make the idea come true. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for school children over 16. And there were eleven prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called “Sunshine Superman”. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine records only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is accurate and this is very important for research into way of using its power.
You can do so much with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning!
The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more school children for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power”!

Passage 5
Most teachers assign novels for students to read not write. But many teachers nationwide are not only asking students to read novels but also giving them a month to write them. Yes, you read that right: one month.
However, students participating in November’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) do not complain about being overworked. Instead, they have been known to ask, “Can we work on our novels today?” That’s because, above all, NaNoWriMo is meant to be fun. An exercise in “seat-of-your-pants” novel writing, it has almost no rules.
The Office of Letters and Light is the nonprofit behind the event. It believes this carefree approach encourages writers to take imaginative risks and truly enjoy their work. Founded in 1999, the adult version of the event requires only that you commit yourself to making an attempt at novel writing and submitting a novel of 50,000 words, no matter how good or bad they are, by the end of November.
Since 2005, NaNoWriMo has entered many classrooms, including those of National Writing Project teachers, through its Young Writers Program. In addition, teachers receive a classroom kit featuring a progress chart, stickers to mark word counts, and buttons for writers who cross the finish line.
About 1,800 classrooms and 45,000 kids and teens participated last year. The rules for under-18 writers are the same as those for adults. But there is one important exception: young writers can pick their own “reasonable yet challenging” word length. If a student elects to write, say, 18,000 words and achieves this goal in a month, he or she is a winner. Awards include a “handsome winner’s certificate” and a promotional code to receive a free bound proof copy of the finished novel.
The Young Writers Program also facilitates Script Frenzy, a similar scriptwriting (剧本写作) event that happens each April and challenges participants to write a 100-page script in 30 days.
While young writers work primarily as individuals, teachers are also encouraged to write along with them.
16.It can be inferred that students usually ________ after participating in NaNoWriMo.

C.look courageous D.become distracted
17.By “seat-of-your-pants” in paragraph 2, the author means ________.
A.the novel writing activity gives its participants pants as awards
B.the participants have to stick on their seats for long writing novels

D.the novel writing activity needs new rules for participants to follow

Passage 6
Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of construction workers at a building site near her house in the upscale Koramangala district of Bangalore, India.
“Their feet were bare. Cracked. Hard. Dirty. Bleeding,” reflects Sia, now 17. “They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for them.” And it was at that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast to her own privilege. Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need, epitomized (体现) by its motto: “Donate a sole, save a soul.”
The idea, which started as a dinner conversation with her parents, quickly grew. After she spread the word with posters and WhatsApp groups, enquiries from people who wanted to help came flooding in. For months, Sia was juggling schoolwork and her new passion project. “I was up till 2 a.m. creating Excel sheets to see which apartment buildings we could tackle for donations and contacting people.”
In its first distribution drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number stands at around 28,000 across four countries, including the United States, China and Liberia, thanks to the hard work of a core team of about 80 volunteers.
But the organization’s growth wasn’t without its challenges. When it came to looking for collaborators, such as a company that would do the repairs and clean up the footwear to look like new free of charge, Sia faced one obstacle after another before finding a partner in India’s Pressto Cobbler.
“Being a 13-year-old, I did face a lot of bias because at my age, people were less willing to hear me out,” says Sia.
In recognition of her impact, in 2021 Sia was given the Diana Award, given to people aged nine to 25 in memory of the late Princess of Wales. Passage 8
In the dim light of an early autumn evening, Alexander, a hunter: known as much for his solitude as for his skill, ventured into the untamed (原始的) heart of the jungle. Each step he took was measured and careful, a respect for the ancient wilderness where every breath was a story, and man was but a fleeting shadow.
For years, whispers of a tiger, not just any tiger but one whose fur caught the last rays of the sun, had reached Alexander. A creature so splendid and fearsome, it was said to be more myth than flesh. On this day, as the shadows lengthened and the jungle whispered its age-old secrets, Alexander sought not just the tiger, but a confrontation with the very essence of the wild itself. As dusk settled, painting the world in colors of gold and shadow, the boundary between predator and prey seemed to dissolve. The air was heavy with anticipation, the kind that precedes storms and stories.
Then, in a clearing where the jungle seemed to hold its breath, the tiger appeared. It was as if the sun had woven itself into the fabric of its being, its fur a blend of flame and night. For a moment, the world shrank to the space between the hunter named Alexander and the legend made flesh before him.
Their gazes locked, a silent understanding passing between man and beast. Here was Alexander, a man who had walked through shadows to stand in the light of a legend, and the tiger, an embodiment of the wild’s untouchable majesty. In that eternal moment, Alexander saw not a prey but a sovereign of nature, a being whose right to wander the dusk was as undeniable as the setting sun.
With a respect born of countless sunsets and the silent tales they told, Alexander slowly lowered his rifle (步枪). The act was not one of defeat but of profound respect-a recognition of the bond that ties every living thing to the pulse of the earth. The tiger, its gaze still locked with Alexander’s, seemed to acknowledge this unspoken pact. Then, it turned and melted into the shadows, leaving behind a trail of twilight.
Alexander left the jungle that night without a trophy (战利品), but his soul was alight with a tale of fire and twilight. He had sought a legend and found a truth far greater: in the wild’s heart, where shadows and light dance, there lies a respect so deep it transcends the hunt. This encounter, a dance with the untamed, would echo in Alexander’s heart long after the jungle’s whispers faded into the dawn.
28.What was Alexander’s primary reason for venturing into the jungle?
A.To find a place to set up camp.
B.To hunt a tiger rumored to have a fur like the setting sun.
C.To escape from the challenges of modern life.
D.To meet other hunters and share stories.
29.What decision does Alexander make when he finally encounters the tiger?
A.He captures the tiger to prove its existence.
B.He shoots the tiger to claim his trophy.
C.He attempts to trap the tiger but fails
D.He lowers his rifle, choosing not to shoot the tiger.
30.The author’s writing style reflects Hemingway’s influence through ________.
A.complex language. B.long sentences.

B.True courage is demonstrated through dominance over nature.
C.There is a profound respect that exists between man and nature.
D.Technology has distanced man from understanding the natural world.
Passage 9
An Excerpt from Around the World in 80 Days — By Jules Verne
①“We set out for Dover and Calais in ten minutes,” Fogg announced.
②A puzzled grin (咧嘴笑) appeared in Passepartout’s round face. “Monsieur is going to leave home?”
③ “Yes,” replied Phileas Fogg. “We are going around the world.”
④ Passepartout’s eyes widened. He raised his eyebrows, held up his hands and seemed about to collapse. “Round the world!” he murmured.
⑥ “In eighty days,” responded Mr. Fogg.
⑥ “So we don’t have a moment to lose.”
⑦ “But the cases?” asked Passepartout.
⑧ “We won’t have any cases,” Fogg replied. “Only a bag with two shirts and three pairs of stockings for me in it, and the same for you. Bring down my raincoat and traveling cloak, and some strong shoes, although we will do little walking. Hurry up!”
⑨ Passepartout tried to reply, but he could not. He mechanically began to make the preparations for departure. Around the world in eighty days! Was his master a fool? No. Was this a joke, then? They were going to Dover. That was good! They were going to Calais. That was good again! After all, Passepartout, who had been away from France for five years, wouldn’t be sorry to set foot in his own country again. Perhaps they would go somewhere as far as Paris, and it would do his eyes good to see Paris once again.
⑩ By eight o’clock Passepartout had packed the bag. Then, he went down to see Mr. Fogg. Mr. Fogg was completely ready. Under his arm was a book containing timetables showing the arrival and departure of steam boats and trains. He checked his bag again and ensured everything he needed was in it.
⑪ “Take this bag,” Fogg said, handing it to Passepartout. “Take good care of it because there are twenty thousand pounds in it.” Passepartout nearly dropped the bag, as if the twenty thousand pounds had been in gold and almost weighed him down. They left the house and at the end of Saville Row they took a taxi and drove rapidly to Charing Cross.

Passage 10
The train was at a standstill, some twenty minutes outside Kolkata, when an unexpected stroke of luck presented Piya with an opportunity to go for a seat beside a window for some fresh air. She had been sitting in the stuffiest part of the train compartment, on the edge of a bench, now, moving to the open window, she saw that the train had stopped at a station called Champahati.
Looking over her shoulder, Piya spotted a tea-seller on the platform. Reaching through the bars of the window, she called him with a wave. She had never cared for the kind of chai, Indian tea, sold in Seattle, her hometown in the USA, but somehow, in the ten days she had spent in India she had developed an unexpected taste for milky, overboiled tea served in earthenware cups. There were no spices in it for one thing, and this was more to her taste than the chai at home.
She paid for her tea and was trying to get in the cup through the bars when the man in the seat opposite her own suddenly turned over a page, jolting her hand. She turned her wrist quickly enough to make sure that most of the tea spilled out of the window, but she could not prevent some from spilling over his papers.
“Oh, I’m so sorry!” Piya was very embarrassed: of everyone in the compartment, this was the last person she would have chosen to injure with her tea. She had noticed him while waiting on the platform in Kolkata and she had been struck by the self-satisfied tilt of his head and the way in which he stared at everyone around him, taking them in, sizing them up, sorting them all into their places.
“Here,” said Piya, producing a handful of tissues. “Let me help you clean up.”
“There’s nothing to be done,” he said testily (暴躁地). “These pages are ruined anyway.”
For a moment she considered pointing out that it was he who had knocked her hand. But all she could bring herself to say was, “I’m very sorry. I hope you’ll excuse me.”
“Do I really have a choice?” he said. “Does anyone have a choice when they’re dealing with Americans these days?”
Piya had no wish to get into an argument so she let this pass. Instead, she opened her eyes wide and, in an attempt to restore peace, came out with, “But how did you guess?”
“About what?”
“About my being American? You’re very observant.”
This seemed to do the trick. His shoulders relaxed as he leaned back in his seat. “I didn’t guess,” he said. “I knew.”
36.In the first paragraph, Piya was relieved when she got a window seat because it meant that ________.
A.there was more room for her luggage
B.she no longer had to suffer from a lack of air
C.there was less chance that she would miss her stop
D.she didn’t have to stand for the rest of the train journey
37.Piya found that the tea or chai she had drunk in India ________.
A.was disappointingly weak in taste
B.reminded her of her home in Seattle
C.would have tasted better if served fresh
D.was preferable to the chai she had had before
38.Piya asked “But how did you guess?” in order to ________.
A.find out what the man really thought about Americans
B.ensure the man realized that she had apologized
C.try to calm the situation down by starting a conversation
D.make sure the man knew he was being rude

5.The author mentioned her conversation with an American co-worker at the beginning to ________.
A.show how she gets along with American colleagues in the office
B.explain how to clear up misunderstandings between colleagues
C.introduce the differences between British and American English
D.describe what her life looked like after she came to Beijing
6.The underlined sentence "the cloud seemed to lift from her mind" means________.
A.she became confident of herself
B.she was not sure what to do next
C.she felt excited for what she heard
D.she came to understand the situation
7.Which of the following is most probably the author's idea?
A.British people don't care much about American English
B.Non-English speakers can't tell British English from American English
C.Non-native speakers seem to prefer American English to British English
D.A knowledge of differences between American and British English is very important in communication

13.The writer holds that people seldom _________.
A.have bright ideas B.make their bright ideas come true
C.make their life easier D.think of inventing something
14.What’s the use of Simon West’s animated road signs? _________

B.To warn people on the roads of the danger ahead.
C.To add to the beauty of a city.
D.To help make a car trip more exciting.
15.The writer seems to be encouraging the British industry to _________.

C.stop asking school children for suggestions
D.pay more attention to school children’s inventive power

14.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning!(他使用的图片会随着你走近或远离它们而移动。这不是一个新想法。但是在道路标志上使用这些图片是新的。“我们发现人们很可能会看到移动的标志,”Simon说。所以现在,你真的可以看到石头落下,火车移动,马奔跑或汽车从悬崖边缘掉下来。真是个警告!)”可推知,Simon West的动画路标可以用来警告路上的人前方有危险。故选B项。

A.enjoy themselves B.overload themselves
C.look courageous D.become distracted
17.By “seat-of-your-pants” in paragraph 2, the author means ________.
A.the novel writing activity gives its participants pants as awards
B.the participants have to stick on their seats for long writing novels
C.the participants are free to write whatever novels they can imagine
D.the novel writing activity needs new rules for participants to follow
18.What can be learned about the rules for adolescent writers?
A.They should cross the finish line before participating.
B.They can lengthen the duration of their writing process.
C.They can decide on their novels’ word counts themselves.
D.They should submit novels on their teachers’ recommendation.
19.The passage is mainly aimed at ________.
A.explaining the objectives of an event
B.giving a general introduction to an event
C.illustrating the benefits of novel writing
D.attracting teachers to join a writing program
【答案】16.A 17.C 18.C 19.B

根据第五段的“The rules for under-18 writers are the same as those for adults. But there is one important exception: young writers can pick their own “reasonable yet challenging” word length. (年轻作者可以选择自己的合理但具有挑战性的单词数量。)”可知,青少年作者可以自己决定所写的小说的字数。故选C。
19.推理判断题。根据第一段的“Most teachers assign novels for students to read not write. But many teachers nationwide are not only asking students to read novels but also giving them a month to write them. Yes, you read that right: one month. However, students participating in November’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) do not complain about being overworked.
Awarded by a UK-based charity of the same name, it’s one of the most prestigious honours a young person can receive for social action or humanitarian work. But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says.
20.The underlined word “upscale” most probably means ______.
A.shabby B.deserted C.dynamic D.prosperous
21.One of the biggest challenges of Sole Warriors is that ______.
A.local people lacked trust in and patience with teenagers like Sia.
B.just about 80 volunteers came to help Sia in the organization’s infancy.
C.few companies are willing to do the repairs without financial incentives.
D.Sia is not good at operating the organization due to her lack of experience.
22.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.All for one, one for all. B.Walking in someone else’s shoes.
C.Where there is a will, there is a way. D.Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
23.Which group of words can best describe Sia’s qualities?
A.patient, self-disciplined and modest B.curious, generous and knowledgeable
C.energetic, ambitious and sympathetic D.sensitive, independent and passionate
根据第二段中“And it was at that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast to her own privilege.”(就在那一刻,西娅意识到这与她自己的特别待遇形成了令人不安的对比。)和划线单词所在句子“Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of construction workers at a building site near her house in the upscaleKoramangala district of Bangalore, India”(西亚·戈迪卡 (Sia Godika) 13 岁时,在印度班加罗尔 upscale住宅区科拉曼加拉区她家附近的一个建筑工地上,她注意到了建筑工人的孩子光着脚。)
But the organization’s growth wasn’t without its challenges.

【答案】36.B 37.D 38.C
