But in my hotel room I felt ___2___ and bored. The theatre was only about five blocks away from the hotel. How could I get lost? Hence, I decided to ___3___ it. I gathered my room key and set off. Now I was a woman all alone at night. Warning bells began to sound and my heart ___5___ in my throat. Was I at the right theatre? Had I misread the date of the event?
I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theatre. I hurried into the theatre. As I sat there, heart racing, ___6___ film, I muttered a prayer to ___7___ my anxieties. A local blues-rock band was the opening act and their performance drew my attention. Enthusiasm for the band's performance soon ___8___ all my worries from my mind and I began to relax.
After the band, the film began and I understood the presence of the bikers after a conversation with the staff. For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary. But for many people around the world, especially those in impoverished (贫困的) areas, having dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn’t possible. A Brazilian dentist Felipe Rossi has devoted himself to helping changing that situation.
Growing up in USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home — Balsabo in Brazil — converted his initial plan. “All locals didn’t have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open.” Felipe Rossi recalled. “A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning. fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity’ program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is “struggling to survive” because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. “Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face”. Felipe said with a strong will.

At a conference on self-driving cars, Mike Harp, a government official, asked a seemingly simple question about what happens when his own car meets a driver-less vehicle. “If I honk (按喇叭), will it do any good?” Harp wanted to know. Unfortunately, manufacturers didn’t have an answer. “We haven’t reached that point of deciding how and whether it would be appropriate for vehicles to react and in which way to honking,” said one of them. The brief exchange highlights a thorn in the side of automakers and policymakers alike: Self-driving cars will have to share the road with human drivers, likely for decades to come. Those vehicles must therefore respond and adapt to the peculiarities and mistakes of humans behind wheel.
Self-driving technology has already come a long way. Cars being tested on the road today use cameras and radar, for example, to detect the movements of nearby cyclists and pedestrians. There are already driver-assist technologies built into some cars that monitor the speed of vehicles around you, detect potential accidents before they occur, and automatically slow or stop the car to avoid a wreck. In a world where all cars drive themselves, the technology could operate at peak efficiency. Supporters of self-driving cars say that speed limits could be raised and fatal crashes largely avoided as no traffic laws are broken and poor drivers become a thing of the past.
But the change to driver-less vehicles is expected to be gradual and will likely start with ride-sharing services, as the costs of personally owning a self-driving car remain extremely high. That means man and machine will have to play nice on roadways. “There are so many interesting situations,” such as honking a horn, Harp said. When “another car with a driver meets a self-driving car without a driver in there and they realize that, it will frighten some people. How that’s going to be dealt with will be part of the fun part of this process.
Any driver can tell you that driving involves a lot of social interaction, particularly the hand gestures and eye contact of fellow drivers. Much of that interaction between drivers will eventually be digital as cars increasingly collect data and share it with the vehicles around them. If a car speeds up, slows down or prepares for a stop, for example, that would be communicated immediately and electronically to the other vehicles on the road. Like self-driving technology, however, it will be years before the vehicle-to-vehicle communication is common.
That challenge is being taken into account as driver-less vehicles are tested on public roads. But the honking issue is particularly tricky because it’s subject to interpretation. It’s going to be really hard for a driver-less vehicle, even if it hears the honk, to figure out what that honk means.
28. In paragraph 1, “a thorn” refers to__________.
A. the issue that human drivers have peculiarities and make mistakes
B. the prediction that self-driving cars will be common in the future
C. the fact that driver-less cars co-exist with cars driven by humans
D. the technology that ensures driver-less cars are safe on the road
29. Which of the following can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Most people don’t advocate self-driving technology.
B. Inter-vehicle communication is superior to inter-personal interaction.
C. Social interaction will decrease among drivers behind the wheel.
D. More data is needed to make self-driving technology a reality much sooner.
30. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. The simple question about self-driving cars we still can’t answer
B. A golden opportunity for driver-less cars we can’t afford to miss
C. Hidden secrets of self-driving cars we can’t reveal
D. Potential risks of driver-less cars we can’t ignore
C 29. C 30. A

根据第一段中“The brief exchange highlights a thorn in the side of automakers and policymakers alike: Self-driving cars will have to share the road with human drivers, likely for decades to come.(这段简短的对话凸显了汽车制造商和政策制定者面临的a thorn:自动驾驶汽车将不得不与人类驾驶者共享道路,这种情况可能会持续几十年)”可知,“a thorn”指的是后文中自动驾驶汽车与人类驾驶汽车将共存这一事实。
根据倒数第二段中“Any driver can tell you that driving involves a lot of social interaction, particularly the hand gestures and eye contact of fellow drivers. Much of that interaction between drivers will eventually be digital as cars increasingly collect data and share it with the vehicles around them.(任何司机都可以告诉你,驾驶涉及很多社交互动,尤其是其他司机的手势和眼神交流。
通读全文,结合第一段中“At a conference on self-driving cars, Mike Harp, a government official, asked a seemingly simple question about what happens when his own car meets a driver less vehicle. ‘If I honk (按喇叭), will it do any good?’ Harp wanted to know. Unfortunately, manufacturers didn’t have an answer.(在一次关于自动驾驶汽车的会议上,政府官员迈克·哈普问了一个看似简单的问题:当他自己的车遇到无人驾驶汽车时会发生什么。“如果我按喇叭,会有作用吗?”哈普想知道。不幸的是,制造商们没有答案)”可知,文章主要围绕一个关于自动驾驶汽车的简单问题展开,且目前还没有答案。故A项“The simple question about self-driving cars we still can’t answer(关于自动驾驶汽车我们仍然无法回答的简单问题)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选A项。
D
Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient institution, which has occurred ever since men were organized into units larger than the family. In the past human race managed to survive it. Why should it not continue to survive even if wars go on occurring from time to time? Moreover, people like war, and will feel frustrated without it. And without war there will be no adequate opportunity for heroism or self-sacrifice.
Modem technology has changed this. Either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration (通过仲裁) in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (意识形态) would prevent war. I believe this to be a big error. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic (武断的) statements that are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their followers believe in them so fanatically that they are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between different countries, but between man and the atom bomb.
31. From the passage we can learn that war now is ______.

根据文章第二段“Modem technology has changed this”(现代科技改变了这一点)以及“For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat.”(目前,造成最严重危险的是核武器,但不久之后,细菌或化学武器可能带来更大的威胁。)
根据文章第二段“Either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. ”(要么人会消灭战争,要么战争会消灭人。目前,造成最严重危险的是核武器,但细菌或化学武器不久可能会带来更大的威胁。如果我们成功地废除了核武器,我们的工作也还没有完成。除非我们成功地废除了战争,否则这是永远不会实现的。)可知,只有成功废除战争,才能算做完成人类的工作,由此可推知,如果人们选择在现代进行战争,他们最终将自我毁灭。故选D。
33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“All ideologies are based upon dogmatic (武断的) statements that are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their followers believe in them so fanatically that they are willing to go to war in support of them.”(所有的意识形态都建立在武断的陈述之上,往好了说,这些陈述是可疑的,往坏了说,这些陈述是完全错误的。
根据全文内容,特别是第二段“To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration (通过仲裁) in accordance with agreed principles of law .”(要做到这一点,我们需要说服人类以一种新的方式看待国际问题,而不是将其视为武力的较量,在这种较量中,胜利属于最善于杀人的一方,而是通过根据商定的法律原则进行仲裁。)

Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages. They include movement of hands, face, or other parts of the body. Gestures benefit our lives a lot. Take language learning.
In some languages, certain syllables (音节) within words are pronounced with markedly more weight than others, called lexical stress. Languages such as English commonly feature lexical stress. For example, the word “accent” involves more emphasis on the first syllable, “ac”, than the second, “cent”. Native speakers of Chinese, however, don’t use lexical stress and therefore find it difficult to learn languages that feature it.
Making any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress, which has been proved by Xing Tian’s team. They selected 124 native Chinese speakers, who watched videos of people performing hand movements that were synced(同步的) to recordings of the same English words. In addition, they also found when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it.
The research involved several experiments, which makes it difficult to combine the results. Nevertheless, Tian estimates that the use of gestures helped identify lexical stress between 10 and 15 percent more accurately compared with no gestures at all, and how much help depends on the nature of gestures.
A follow-up study conducted by another team exposed the same Chinese speakers to Russian words and got similar results. “Our findings highlight the functional role of gestures in enhancing speech learning, suggesting practical strategies for language teaching and learning,” the researchers write in their paper.
The benefits of gestures extend far beyond teaching and learning. Since gestures are deeply integrated into our daily lives, they deserve more of our attention.
40. What do gestures mean?
_________________________________________________________________________________________
41. What did Xing Tian’s team find in their study?
_________________________________________________________________________________________
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Gestures help learn lexical stress, but the degree to which they help depends on the complexity of the lexical stress.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
43. Besides what is mentioned in the passage, how do gestures benefit you in your life? (In about 40words)
_________________________________________________________________________________________
40. Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages.
41. Any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress. Besides, when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it.
42. Gestures help learn lexical stress, but the degree to which they help depends on the complexity of the lexical stress.
Gestures help learn lexical stress, but how much help depends on the nature of gestures.
43. Gestures make it easy for me to convey feelings and better connect with others. For example, when I want to express excitement, waving my hands or nodding vigorously can help me communicate the emotion effectively. That also allows me to build stronger relationships with others.
根据第一段“Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages.(手势指的是用可见的身体动作来传达重要信息的交流方式)”可知,手势指的是用可见的身体动作来传达重要信息的交流方式。故填Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages.
根据第三段“Making any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress, which has been proved by Xing Tian’s team.(做任何手势都可以帮助学习者识别词汇重音,Xing Tian的团队已经证明了这一点)”及“In addition, they also found when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it.(此外,他们还发现,当更明显的手势与重读音节相匹配时,参与者特别擅长识别它)”可知,Xing Tian的团队发现:任何手势都可以帮助学习者识别词汇重音。 Any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress. Besides, when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it.
根据第四段“Tian estimates that the use of gestures helped identify lexical stress between 10 and 15 percent more accurately compared with no gestures at all, and how much help depends on the nature of gestures.(Tian教授估计,与完全不使用手势相比,使用手势识别单词重音的准确率提高了10%到15%,而有多大的帮助取决于手势的性质)”可知,第一句中最后of the lexical stress错误,手势有助于学习单词重音,但有多大的帮助取决于“手势的性质(the nature of gestures)”,而不是“词汇重音(the lexical stress)”。故填Gestures help learn lexical stress, but the degree to which they help depends on the complexity of the lexical stress./Gestures help learn lexical stress, but how much help depends on the nature of gestures.
根据文章第一段“Take language learning.(以学习为例)”及最后一段“The benefits of gestures extend far beyond teaching and learning. Since gestures are deeply integrated into our daily lives, they deserve more of our attention.(手势的好处远远超出了教和学。由于手势深深地融入了我们的日常生活,它们值得我们更多的关注)”并结合全文可知,文章介绍了什么是手势语,手势语在教与学中的重要性,此外,还可以从“手势语可以帮助我们更好的表达情感,与他人交流”方面进行举例说明,例如,当我想表达兴奋时,大力挥手或点头可以帮助我有效地传达情绪。这也让我与他人建立了更牢固的关系。故填Gestures make it easy for me to convey feelings and better connect with others. For example, when I want to express excitement, waving my hands or nodding vigorously can help me communicate the emotion effectively. That also allows me to build stronger relationships with others.

24. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By posing a contrast.
B. By reporting an event.
C. By assuming a situation.
D. By making an appeal.
25. What motivated Felipe to offer dental treatments to Brazilians?
A. The support from his parents.
B. The passion for dental health.
C. The encounter with local s lacking dental care.
D. The professional skills and knowledge from college.
26. Which of the following can best describe Felipe Rossi?
A. Hopeful and diligent.
B. Faithful and ambitious.
C. Intelligent and creative.
D. Charitable and dedicated.
27. What do we know about Porsorriso?
A. It gives free oral treatments to anyone in need.
B. It is cooperated by Felipe Rossi and the local authority.
C. It is financially supported by corporations and individuals.
D. It holds regular fundraisers to educate people about dental care.

But the change to driver-less vehicles is expected to be gradual, and will likely start with ride-sharing services, as the costs of personally owning a self-driving car remain extremely high.
B the prediction that self-driving cars will be common in the future
C. the fact that driver-less cars co-exist with cars driven by humans
D. the technology that ensures driver-less cars are safe on the road

Time or Money?
Would you rather have a higher salary or the freedom to work from anywhere in the world? According to a survey, seven out of ten surveyed readers would consider accepting a lower salary for more perks (额外收入) and benefits — one in ten would definitely do so. ____35____.
For today’s workforce, especially Gen Zs and millennials (千禧一代), perks extend far beyond the traditional benefits package. They are putting a lot of focus on work-life balance, career advancement, and the company’s culture and values. Among all, a flexible work arrangement tops the list of those values. ____36____. The ability to control when and where they work not only boosts productivity but also helps prevent burnout. This shift enforces companies to demonstrate that they value outcomes and results over rigid schedules. In return, employees feel trusted, valued, and empowered, performing at their best when given the flexibility to balance their personal and professional lives.
____37____. For women, especially working mothers, unclear boundaries between home and work can make them feel like they are always working, which increases the risk of burnout. Moreover, remote work can intensify (增强) the challenges associated with career advancement, as fewer in-person interactions can lead to being overlooked or sidelined. ____38____. This belief could negatively affect their chances for promotions and leadership opportunities.
Looking ahead, flexible work arrangements are here to stay and will likely continue to evolve. ____39____. Organizations should ensure equitable opportunities consistent with flexible work models, such as offering personalized arrangements instead of one-size-fits-all solutions.

Since gestures are deeply integrated into our daily lives they deserve more of our attention.
