Scientists can help us to have more and better meats to eat by cloning only the superior animals. I don’t think that we should worry so much about genetically-engineered food. Angela Fernandez from Mexico I don’t know whether the tomatoes we find in supermarkets are genetically manipulated or not. What I do know is that they are very bad! A tomato grown with sun and soil is much better. In the case of strawberries, actually, most strawberries we can find are very tasty. I guess, however, they have been genetically manipulated, too. Vera Sorokina from Russia If we manipulate vegetable genes, we can also do with human genes. So, it may be possible that a substance which is left in food could get into a human body while the person is eating. Then, is it possible that this substance could modify the person’s genetic structure? Pinar Müfftler from Turkey I don’t agree with the idea that scientists should not grow genetically-engineered food because it is not safe. If they want to make progress, they should do experiments. It’s important to keep trying. If they don’t keep trying, they will never be able to develop new technologies. Maybe these technologies won’t be successful in the beginning, but if scientists keep trying, they will develop new ways. 21. Of the people above, who is obviously against genetically-engineered food? A. Pinar Müfftler from Turkey. B. Martín Ramírez from Argentina. C. Vera Sirotkina from Russia. D. Angela Fernandez from Mexico. 22. As far as Pinar Müfftler is concerned, . A. developing such food is a better way to solve world hunger B. experimenting on such food shouldn’t be allowed C. new technologies will make such food safer to eat D. this kind of food is much better and tastier 23. What do we infer about Martín Ramírez? A. He doubts whether such food is safe. B. He worries that the crops will spoil. C. He doesn’t like vegetables and fruits. D. He is in favour of cloning animals. B One summer day as I was heading to the teaching building, I heard someone call my name. I turned around and saw Philip, a counselor (顾问) at our admissions office, standing with another young man. Philip introduced me to him, Stephen, and reminded me that Stephen would be taking one of my classes. Stephen looked at me. With a somewhat painful expression, he asked if my class was going to be hard and if he would be able to pass. I introduced all the things that he would be expected to learn. As we talked, I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with fear. I told him to do all of his assignments, and to hand them in on time. Rather than being overwhelmed (压倒) by all of the work, I told him the most successful students made a master calendar of all the assignments so they could plan their workload. As the fall semester went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. It had taken him longer to finish the assignments than most young people. Family members, including his mother, kept reminding him that he was a failure. But he kept at it and didn’t take them to heart. He told me that before coming to our college, no one believed he could manage it. Stephen didn’t become an A student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignments on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing course after course, he began to gain a measure of self-esteem. On his graduation day, he walked up to me, and said, “Thank you.” 24. What can we learn about the author according to the passage? A. He wouldn’t have met Stephen without the introduction of Philip. B. He told Stephen how to deal with his studies. C. He helped Stephen get an A in his class. D. He didn’t believe that Stephen could study in college. 25. What does the passage mainly tell us about Stephen? A. He was an average student but hard-working. B. He was an excellent student, but didn’t have self-esteem. C. He was a little stupid and didn’t do well at school. D. He was far from a top student because of his failure. 26. What lesson can we learn from the passage? A. A good beginning is half done. B. One bite at a time. C. Haste makes waste. D. Look before you leap. 27. According to Stephen’s questions to the author, what do we know about Stephen? A He wasn’t very confident about himself. B. He didn’t want to attend the author’s class. C. He had never been an A student. D. He couldn’t pass the author’s exam. C Museums have regained their popularity among young people because of social media, but one person shared on Twitter that people shouldn’t use such ways for their photos. Milo Atienza Parada, an Instagram user, said that people have been going to museums for the sake of taking selfies(自拍)to be posted on their social media. Although there is nothing wrong with it, he still thinks that museums are places of art appreciation(欣赏). Last month, the National Museum of the Philippines opened its newest building to the public — the National Museum of Natural History. It houses the country’s collections of plants and animals. According to its Facebook post, visitors are not allowed to engage in photography. They are also not allowed to take videos or touch museum objects. However, Parada has noticed that many people have been touching artworks during their visit. Besides, the museum has been turned into a place to take photos. “For visitors who only wish to enjoy artworks, taking selfies bothers them,” said Parada. “They will feel angry when seeing some people taking selfies with great artworks they want to enjoy.” But some museums are now accepting the selfie phenomenon(现象). The Artists’ Network shared that the popularity of selfies is an important factor in making people visit museums. The Frick Collection in New York City allows people to take selfies with the artworks. “If they share those images on social media, museums will get a much appreciated’ word of mouth’ result. Search for information about museum selfies on the Internet and you’ll be surprised by all the fun ways people put themselves and objects of art and history together. And that makes other people visit these museums in person,” Heidi Rosenau, the Frick’s communication director said. 28. Why is Parada against taking selfies in museums? A. It may put pressure on museum management. B. It affects the popularity of social media sites. C. It may take people’s focus away from artworks. D. It damages artworks that should avoid flash photography. 29. What can be learned about the mentioned museum from Paragraph 2? A. Many visitors are blind to its rules. B. Many visitors disagree with its rules. C. It should set up some photo-taking areas. D. It needs to spend more on protecting artworks. 30. According to Paragraph 4, taking selfies in museums can ________ A. leave some special memories for visitors B. offer a new chance to express people’s creativity C. draw people’s attention to the protection of artworks D. promote the artworks and the museums to the public 31. What is the text mainly about? A. The influences of social media on the changes in museums. B. Some benefits and harm of taking selfies in museums. C. Some common behaviors among visitors to museums. D. Different creative ideas for taking selfies in different museums. D New glove can translate sign language instantly through an app, researchers say California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. Unlike its past counterparts, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, simultaneously teaching a machine how to recognize them. The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone. The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm (计算程序) recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second. The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same. Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores. 32. Who is the new glove intended for? A. Translators. B. Deaf people. C. English learners. D. Sign language users. 33. What does Paragraph 4 mainly say about the new glove? A. Its reliability. B. Its components. C. Its working principle. D. Its broad applications. 34. How do researchers improve the glove’s correctness of recognition? A. By connecting it to smartphones. B. By lengthening the time of catching gestures. C. By inputting more letters and words in English. D. By catching information from participants’ faces. 35. What will researchers do with the glove in the future? A. Bring it to market. B. Update its outlook. C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance. Green roofs have been around for thousands of years, long before modern housing was developed. From the simple grass-covered roofs above caves to the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, they remained an important part of architecture. ____36____ They bring enormous environmental benefits and offer solutions to some pressing ecological challenges of our time. In the design of a green roof, there are key factors that count. The first step is to install (安装) a protective layer over the roof to prevent water damage. ____37____ It’s essential to choose high-quality materials, as once the green roof is completed and the building is in use, replacing the protective layer becomes difficult and expensive. Next, a drainage (排水) layer, which is often made of pebbles or a special mat, is placed on top. It helps water flow off the roof instead of pooling on it. Then, a growing medium, like soil or other similar materials, is spread over the drainage layer. ____38____ Now it’s time to choose plants for the roof. Some plants have shallow root systems and don’t need much water. ____39____ Sedum and chives are good examples of such plants. They are not only water-efficient but tough and long-lasting. ____40____ It’s important to think about your budget. On average, it costs $25 to $30 per square foot to install a green roof. This doesn’t include the cost of installing or repairing the normal roof underneath. And there is labour cost to cover. If a traditional roof costs $30 per square foot, installing a green roof could easily double that expense. A. This is where the plants will grow. B. However, green roofs come at a high cost. C. Today, green roofs are gaining more attention. D. These features make them ideal for green roofs. E. As a result, they led to the popularity of green roofs. F. Green roof materials can range from grass to solar panels. G. The layer also stops plant roots growing into the roof structure. I’ve lived in a small town for all 16 years of my life. Massive waves surged against large rocks that formed a waterproof jetty(防波堤). People said this beach was known for its dangerous currents. I was overcome with fear. Nothing scared me as much as water. Just the sight of the sea made me sick to my stomach. I’d always loved water and been a good swimmer until last summer, when I’d decided to climb up to the highest diving board at the pool. I’d hopped from that height and hit the water with an incredible impact and I blacked out. The next thing I knew, I was being pulled out of the pool. From then on, I was absolutely terrified of water. “Jason, are you coming?” my friend, Matt, called. Matt was also a good swimmer. As teenagers, we had attended the life saving class and swum a lot. “Yeah,” I said. “Just enjoying the view,” from dry land, I added silently, worried they might regard my fear pitiful if they knew. Suddenly I heard shouting in French. People were running into the sea, fully clothed. That’s odd, I thought. I glimpsed something moving up and down in the waves, past the end of the jetty. That’s a little boy out there! The would-be rescuers fought against the tide, but with the water’s tow(拖拽), they’d never get to him in time. I soon realized the boy was close to the jetty! Maybe I could help from there. I raced down the beach, out onto the jetty, and it hit me: Water! My palms got sweaty and my stomach felt sick. I stopped short. The people in the water weren’t making any progress. I was the only one who saw that going out on the jetty was the fastest way to reach the drowning boy. But I was extremely terrified. The boy was about 25 yards away from the jetty. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Jason, you can do it!” I heard Matt say on the jetty while I was desperate in the water. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 乐平三中高二下学期3月月考英语试卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 How much is the shirt? It cannot be denied that the rise of modern technology has often come at the cost of the natural world. However, it’s sometimes possible for the two sides to exist in harmony. Actually, many of the world’s greatest inventions have been inspired by nature. For example, the Wright brothers, American aircraft engineers, took inspiration from the flight of birds, while underwater sound wave technology was inspired by the way whales and dolphins communicate. Meanwhile, robotics engineers often draw inspiration from the animal kingdom to create robots that can deal with challenging environments. It’s not just animals that have inspired useful inventions. The University of Hong Kong developed a tiny, energy-efficient machine. It was inspired by the design of tree seeds. Other plant-inspired inventions include green plastic and life-saving medicine. Like many people, I feel it’s time for technology to “return the favor”now. That is why I’m currently studying to become an environmental engineer. My dream is one day to create an invention that will significantly help deal with climate change. A Martín Ramírez from Argentina I think it is okay for scientists to grow genetically-engineer food because they can develop better food and this can help with the hunger problem all around the world. 21. D 22. C 23. 28. C 29. A 30. D 31. They are also not allowed to take videos or touch museum objects. However, Parada has noticed that many people have been touching artworks during their visit. Besides, the museum has been turned into a place to take photos.(根据其脸书帖子内容,参观者不允许拍照,也不允许拍摄视频或触摸馆内展品。 故选A。 根据文章第四段““If they share those images on social media, museums will get a much appreciated’ word of mouth’ result. Search for information about museum selfies on the Internet and you’ll be surprised by all the fun ways people put themselves and objects of art and history together. And that makes other people visit these museums in person,” Heidi Rosenau, the Frick’s communication director said.(“如果他们在社交媒体上分享这些照片,博物馆将获得备受赞赏的“口碑”效应。 B。 D New glove can translate sign language instantly through an app, researchers say California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. D 33. C 34. D 35. 根据文章第二段“The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them.(该设备有助于消除手语使用者和非手语使用者之间的沟通障碍。 根据文章第四段“The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone.(手套上装有由“导电纱线”制成的薄而可拉伸的传感器,这些传感器沿每根手指延伸,并将动作转换为信号。 根据文章第六段“The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”.(研究人员还在参与者的眉毛之间和嘴巴两侧放置了传感器,以“捕捉作为美国手语一部分的面部表情”)”可知,研究人员在参与者的眉毛之间和嘴巴两侧放置了传感器来捕捉作为美国手语一部分的面部表情。 根据文章最后一段“Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores.(研究人员表示,为了让这款手套实现商业化并在商店出售,它需要学习更多的词汇,并能够更快地翻译手语)”可知,研究人员还有很多工作要做,以使手套具有商业价值。 Green roofs have been around for thousands of years, long before modern housing was developed. 36. C 37. G 38. A 39. D 40. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version: The boy was about 25 yards away from the jetty. As I stood at the edge of the Jetty, my heart pounding in my chest like a drum. There’s no time for me to think about more. Sucking in a deep breath, I threw myself into the water. As soon as I jumped in, I felt like I was back in that pool, breathless, struggling, terrified. I tried to focus, but fighting the force of the water wasn’t easy. At some point, I even felt like I wouldn’t make it. I could feel my muscles burning. “Jason, you can do it!” I heard Matt say on the jetty while I was desperate in the water. Feeling a new sense of determination welling up inside me, I pushed myself harder and finally I reached the boy. I swam with all my strength and fought to get us back to land. Matt jumped into the water. I felt strong arms lift me. And, as we made our way to safety I realized something incredible: I was no longer afraid. I turned my head and saw the boy was hugged tightly by his mother. I looked out to the sea. Weary as I was, the water had never looked so beautiful. 词汇激活 行为类 ①(心脏)剧烈地跳动:pound/beat ②集中:focus/concentrate ③拥抱:hug/embrace ④举起:lift/ hold up 情绪类 ①害怕的:afraid/frightened ②疲惫的:weary/exhausted 【点睛】[高分句型1] As soon as I jumped in, I felt like I was back in that pool, breathless, struggling, terrified. Like many people, I feel it's time for technology to return the favor. Now that is why i'm currently studying to become an environmental engineer.
