This weekend I had the pleasure of seeing the Latvian animated film Flow in the theater. I’d never heard of it, but all of the other options were sequels (续集) or Christmas movies. Flow had a great trailer (预告片), excellent reviews, and won many awards. I was told.
It is about the adventures of a black cat, a yellow dog, and several other animals that band together to survive a catastrophic flood. There are no people in the film. In fact, there is no dialogue at all in the hour and a half.
You would think that a movie without any human characters or dialogue would be boring. Well, Flow is anything BUT. On the contrary, I was often on the edge of my seat, terrified for the danger these little guys faced. They’re constantly escaping enemies and rising water. Eventually, our black cat finds himself in a new land. At the start of the movie he is alone, but by the end he is surrounded by new friends.
What, if anything, does this movie “mean”? Clearly, one of the basic themes is unity — different species that initially don’t get along eventually learn to help each other survive. But I think the fact that humans are completely absent seems intentional. The animals pass through run-down, abandoned towns, implying that humanity may have been wiped out by a disaster. Combined with the flood, this suggests a metaphor about climate change and sea level rise. The movie’s metaphors are subtle: water is an ever-present symbol in the film, and it is constantly flowing forward, pushing the action and our characters. With the title literally named Flow, temporariness seems to be the main message: things constantly changing, the world moves on. We often can’t control storms of life. What we can control are our own actions. You can choose to fight the current or go with it and make the best of what you find down river.
Or it could mean something else completely different to you! Like the best poems, this movie is open to multiple interpretations.
4. What initially motivated the author to watch the film Flow?
A. Recommendations from strangers. B. Its positive reception and many awards.
C. Curiosity about an unknown movie. D. Its unique theme concerning animals.
5. Which of the following is a distinctive feature of Flow?
A. It involves more than human characters. B. It contains no spoken dialogue.
C. It is a short animation within 90 minutes. D. It is primarily a Christmas-themed story.
6. In the author’s opinion, what does humans’ absence from the film imply?
A. The loss of humanity. B. The difficulty of survival.
C. The unpredictability of life. D. The unity of diverse species.
7. Where is the text probably from?
A. A textbook on animation. B. An eco-tour journal.
C. An editorial on global warming. D. An entertainment website.
C
A “memory breakdown” is often said to be the major cognitive problem of our time. In a recent piece in The Chronicle Review, Daniel Mercer argued that “students can’t remember even simple facts without checking their phones”, and many schools have quietly lowered expectations for memorizing dates, formulas and vocabulary.
Yet complaints about weak memory are hardly new. In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Latham blamed that cheap printed books would destroy students’ power to remember, because they no longer needed to keep long passages in their heads. Over the decades, similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool has entered classrooms.
Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to use their memory. Many students now treat their phones as an “external brain”, much as earlier generations treated the family bookshelf. At the same time, the use of digital calendars, search engines and cloud storage continue to rise. This points to a change not in whether people can remember, but in what they believe is worth remembering. “Students can still memorize,” Mercer wrote. “They’re just deciding to memorize different things.”
This leads to a deeper question: What kind of memory do we truly need, and why? Psychologists often distinguish between recall — producing information with no help — and recognition, which is using clues to find what we once knew. In classic “change blindness” experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking to has been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows that relying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managing limited mental resources.
Could today’s young people be developing useful memory strategies that we have not yet learned to value? What about their skill at searching huge databases in seconds, or at linking ideas across videos, chats and online documents? These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider — with the history of past “memory breakdown” in mind — how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways.
8. What does the underlined word “denunciations” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Origins. B. Reminders. C. Criticisms. D. Indicators.
9. What does the growing use of digital tools suggest according to Mercer?
A. People no longer need to train their memory.
B. People are changing the way they use their memory.
C. Schools are forcing students to rely on external devices.
D. Modern technology is destroying traditional learning tools.
10. Why does the author mention the “change blindness” experiments?
A. To display that people are easily fooled by visual tricks.
B. To prove that using outside cues can be a reasonable strategy.
C. To demonstrate that face recognition is more important than tasks.
D. To illustrate that most memories are formed without our awareness.
11. What will probably be discussed next?
A. Challenges facing the young generation.
B. More valuable lessons taught by history.
C. Ways to support memory in the digital age.
D. Effects of relying on external memory tools.

A team of psychologists from the University of Chicago conducted an experiment to compare the effects of natural sounds and common white noise on people’s sustained attention.
In the study, 212 adult participants were randomly divided into two groups. The nature sound group completed a 40-minute attention task with recordings of forest birdsong and gentle rainfall playing in the background. The control group performed the same task with standard white noise — a steady, uniform sound widely used in workplaces to reduce surrounding distractions. The task required participants to monitor a stream of numbers on a screen and press a button whenever a specific rare pattern appeared. Both accuracy and reaction speed were recorded as key measures of attention performance.
Overall, the nature sound group scored 12% higher on average in attention accuracy than the control group, with no significant difference in reaction speed between the two groups. When researchers divided participants by their self-reported daily distractibility, the performance gap grew much wider. Among people who often struggled to stay focused in daily life, those in the nature sound group performed over 21% better than similar participants in the control group. For those with naturally strong concentration, the improvement was small and not statistically meaningful.
The researchers also tracked participants’ mood states before and after the task. Both groups reported similar levels of relaxation and positive feelings after finishing the test. This result indicated that the attention improvement was not driven by a better mood, but by the natural sounds themselves, which help the brain enter a gentle state of focus without requiring extra mental effort.
“Many people turn on white noise when they need to concentrate, assuming it is the most reliable choice,” said Dr. Lena Marlow, lead researcher of the study. “But our findings suggest natural sounds are a more effective option, especially for those who struggle with distraction. Small adjustments to our daily sound environment can bring noticeable improvements to work and study efficiency.”
12. What is a feature of the nature sound group in the experiment?
A. They finished a shorter version of the task.
B. They worked with natural sound recordings.
C. They were tested only on reaction speed.
D. They were chosen from office workers.
13. Which group showed the most obvious performance improvement?
A. The nature sound group with strong natural focus.
B. The control group with strong natural focus.
C. The nature sound group with high daily distractibility.
D. The control group with high daily distractibility.
14. Why did the researchers measure participants’ mood states?
A. To rule out mood as the cause of the results.
B. To judge how relaxing different sounds are.
C. To test the influence of the task on feelings.
D. To measure the mental effort of the task.
15. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. Mood Changes Influence People’s Attention Performance
B. White Noise Works Well in Reducing Surrounding Distractions
C. Natural Sounds Beat White Noise for Sustained Attention
D. Attention Tasks Test Adults’ Reaction Speed

Nowadays, staying positive has become a popular mindset. ____16____ But what happens when we take positivity to an extreme? Could being blindly optimistic lead to disappointment? While looking on the bright side is generally seen as a virtue, new research suggests that “toxic positivity” might actually harm our mental health.
Toxic positivity occurs when people deny their real emotions and force themselves to stay optimistic. Gitanjali Trevorrow-Seymour, a professional coach, explains that humans are naturally meant to experience a wide range of emotions, from joy and gratitude to sadness and disappointment. ____17____ Like many things in life, mental wellbeing is all about balance. The danger lies in labeling feelings as “good” or “bad”. When we desperately avoid “negative” emotions, we end up suppressing our real feelings. This suppression places extra stress on the body, which can eventually lead to anxiety or even physical illness.
____18____ If we only show our “happy” selves, our social interactions can become shallow and inauthentic. When a friend is going through hard times, responding with “Try to be positive!” may be well-intentioned, but it often dismisses their feelings. Instead of feeling comforted, they may feel forced to put on a brave face, which is mentally exhausting. True support involves acknowledging their pain rather than attempting to fix it immediately.
____19____ It is OK to feel upset, frustrated or heart-broken when things go wrong. Our painful feelings carry important messages about what matters to us. Ignoring them means we lose chances to know ourselves better.
So, should we avoid positive affirmations entirely? Not necessarily. ____20____ The key is to accept the full range of human experience rather than bury hard feelings under false cheerfulness.
A. It also damages our connections with other people.
B. We should permit ourselves to feel bad from time to time.
C. No single feeling should occupy our mind non-stop.
D. People are often told to push away unpleasant feelings.
E. Many social media posts advocate this optimistic attitude.
F. We can still seek hope without refusing our true inner state.
G. It is harmful to share our negative feelings with our friends.

Even before I reached the tent, I knew there would be trouble. My little brother Andy was following me, with a sleeping bag, a flashlight, and his toy bear. My friends Wade and Brad thought Andy would ruin everything. He would get scared in the middle of the night and have to be taken back to the house. Their complaint continued.
Andy promised that he wouldn’t ruin anything. He wormed his way into the tent and settled in the far corner. Night was settling in, too, with the woods around us fading toward black. The house, with its porch light on, seemed a long way from us.
“Time for ghost stories,” Brad announced as soon as I closed the tent. He told a story about vampires, but it only made us fall over laughing. When it was Wade’s turn, he told a story of three guys who were camping in a tent. He described our situation exactly-except for Andy. When he was describing a scary creature, somewhere outside, a branch broke. The hairs on my arms shot straight up. “These guys were crawling into their sleeping bags, right?” Wade continued. “Just then a terrible cry came out of the darkness.” And out of the woods behind us was a cry, loud, frightening, and strange. The hairs on my head shot straight up too.
“What was that?” Brad asked as the cry came again. We all looked at each other in horror, speechless. Wade suggested someone should go out to check, but no one dared. “What if it’s something trapped or hurt?” Andy said anxiously. We focused our flashlights on Andy, whom we’d forgotten, sitting in the corner with his arms around his bear. Andy would adopt every lost or hurt animal in the world if Mom would let him.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
“I’m going to see.” Andy ran out of the tent and disappeared in the darkness.

C 9. B 10. B 11. C
根据上文“In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Latham blamed that cheap printed books would destroy students' power to remember, because they no longer needed to keep long passages in their heads. (19世纪末,英国教育家亨利·拉瑟姆指责廉价印刷书籍会摧毁学生的记忆力,因为他们不再需要将长篇段落记在脑海中。)”可知,此处blamed表示批评、指责,下文“similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool has entered classrooms(每当有新工具进入课堂时,类似的denunciations就会再次出现)”中similar说明denunciations与上文blamed含义相近。
根据第三段“Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to use their memory. (Mercer认为,与其说是简单的能力丧失,不如说我们正在目睹人们选择使用记忆的方式发生了转变。)”以及“Students can still memorize. They're just deciding to memorize different things. (学生仍然能够记忆。他们只是决定记住不同的东西。)”可知,Mercer认为数字工具的日益使用表明人们正在改变使用记忆的方式,而非丧失记忆能力。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In classic “change blindness” experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking to has been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows that relying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managing limited mental resources. (在经典的 “变化盲视” 实验中,人们无法察觉正在交谈的陌生人已经被悄悄换成了另一个人,因为他们的注意力集中在任务上,而非对方的面孔。这表明依赖外部提示和语境并不总是一种弱点;它可能反映了一种管理有限心理资源的不同方式。)”可知,作者提及“变化盲视”实验是为了证明使用外部线索可以是一种合理的策略,而非弱点。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider — with the history of past “memory breakdown” in mind — how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways. (这些新的记忆习惯促使我们重新思考——考虑到过去“记忆衰退”的历史——我们如何以更灵活、更具前瞻性的方式理解和支持人类记忆。)”可知,文章结尾提出了以灵活、前瞻性方式理解和支持记忆的方向,接下来最可能讨论的是在数字时代支持记忆的具体方式。
D
B 13. C 14. A 15. C
根据第二段中“The nature sound group completed a 40-minute attention task with recordings of forest birdsong and gentle rainfall playing in the background.(自然声音组完成了一项40分钟的注意力任务,背景播放着森林鸟鸣和轻柔雨声的录音)”可知,自然声音组的特点是在实验过程中伴随自然声音录音进行任务。
根据第三段中“Among people who often struggled to stay focused in daily life, those in the nature sound group performed over 21% better than similar participants in the control group.(在日常生活中经常难以保持专注的人群中,自然声音组的参与者比对照组中类似的参与者表现高出21%以上)”可知,日常容易分心且处于自然声音组的参与者表现出了最明显的提升。
根据第四段中“Both groups reported similar levels of relaxation and positive feelings after finishing the test. This result indicated that the attention improvement was not driven by a better mood, but by the natural sounds themselves, which help the brain enter a gentle state of focus without requiring extra mental effort.(两组在完成测试后都报告了相似的放松和积极情绪水平。这一结果表明,注意力的提升并非由更好的情绪驱动,而是由自然声音本身驱动的,这些声音帮助大脑进入一种温和的专注状态,而无需额外的脑力消耗)”可知,研究人员测量参与者情绪状态是为了排除情绪作为注意力提升的原因。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A team of psychologists from the University of Chicago conducted an experiment to compare the effects of natural sounds and common white noise on people’s sustained attention.(芝加哥大学的一组心理学家进行了一项实验,比较自然声音和常见白噪音对人们持续注意力的影响)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了一项对比自然声音和白噪音对持续注意力影响的实验,结果表明自然声音在提升注意力方面优于白噪音。
E 17. C 18. A 19. B 20. F
前文“Nowadays, staying positive has become a popular mindset. (如今,保持积极乐观已经成为一种流行的心态)”提到保持积极已成为一种流行的心态,E项“Many social media posts advocate this optimistic attitude. (许多社交媒体帖子倡导这种乐观态度)”承接上文,对这种流行心态的背景进行补充,逻辑通顺。
【17题详解】
前文“Toxic positivity occurs when people deny their real emotions and force themselves to stay optimistic. Gitanjali Trevorrow-Seymour, a professional coach, explains that humans are naturally meant to experience a wide range of emotions, from joy and gratitude to sadness and disappointment. (所谓有毒的积极心态,就是人们否认真实情绪,强迫自己保持乐观。专业指导师吉坦贾利・特雷沃罗‑西摩解释道,人类天生就会体会多种多样的情绪,有喜悦、感恩,也有悲伤、失落)”提到人类本就会体验从喜悦到悲伤等多种情绪,后文“Like many things in life, mental wellbeing is all about balance. (和生活中的许多事情一样,心理健康的关键在于平衡)”指出心理健康的核心是平衡,C项“No single feeling should occupy our mind non-stop. (没有任何一种情绪应该不间断地占据我们的大脑)”衔接前后,呼应情绪多样性和平衡的核心观点。
【18题详解】
根据后文“If we only show our “happy” selves, our social interactions can become shallow and inauthentic. When a friend is going through hard times, responding with ‘Try to be positive!’ may be well-intentioned, but it often dismisses their feelings. Instead of feeling comforted, they may feel forced to put on a brave face, which is mentally exhausting. True support involves acknowledging their pain rather than attempting to fix it immediately.
后文“It is OK to feel upset, frustrated or heart-broken when things go wrong. Our painful feelings carry important messages about what matters to us. Ignoring them means we lose chances to know ourselves better. (遇到不顺时,感到沮丧、失落或心碎都是正常的。痛苦的情绪会传递重要信号,让我们明白什么对自己至关重要。忽视这些情绪,我们就失去了更好地认识自我的机会)”提及遇到不顺时感到低落是正常的,痛苦的情绪能帮我们更好地认识自己,B项“We should permit ourselves to feel bad from time to time. (我们应该允许自己时不时感受糟糕的情绪)”作为本段主旨句,契合下文接纳负面情绪的表述。
【20题详解】
前文“So, should we avoid positive affirmations entirely? Not necessarily. (那么,我们是否应该完全摒弃积极的自我肯定?未必如此)”指出我们不必完全回避积极的自我肯定,后文“The key is to accept the full range of human experience rather than bury hard feelings under false cheerfulness. (关键是接纳人类全部的人生体验,而不是用虚假的乐观掩盖痛苦的感受)”强调关键是接纳全部感受,不要用虚假乐观掩盖痛苦。F项“We can still seek hope without refusing our true inner state. (我们仍然可以追寻希望,同时不拒绝自己真实的内心状态)”衔接前后,给出折中方案,说明正确对待积极心态的方式。

“I’m going to see.” Andy ran out of the tent and disappeared in the darkness. A wave of panic washed over me the moment he faded into the woods. Without hesitation, I sprinted after him, my heart stuck in my throat. Cold night wind whistled through the woods, and the sharp, sorrowful cry floated from afar. Tracking the wavering beam from Andy’s flashlight, I found him rooted under a huge tree. I directed my flashlight upwards, only to find a helpless little creature behind leaves, letting out piercing cries out of terror.
Andy said it was a baby monkey caught between the branches, and it was crying for its mother. Eyes filled with pity, Andy turned to me, pleading that we should set it free. We called over Wade and Brad, who finally gathered up courage to join our rescue. With joint efforts, we carefully brought the frightened baby monkey safely down. Soon, its mother emerged from nowhere. The little monkey leaped excitedly into its mother’s arms. As they disappeared into the dark forest, it struck me that true bravery lies not in being fearless, but in daring to reach out with kindness even when you tremble with fear.
