When Robert was about two years old, he was trying to take a bottle of milk
from the refrigerator. However, when he got the bottle, he carelessly dropped it off
Suddenly the kitchen floor became sea of milk
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him directly or
punishing him, she said, "Robert, I have hardly seen such a huge puddle(水坑) of
milk. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we
clean it up?" He did as his mother suggested.
After a few minutes, his mother said, "You know, Robert, whenever you make
a mess like this, you have to clean it up. So, how would you like to do that? We
could use a sponge(海绵), a towel(毛中) or a mop. Which do you prefer?"He chose
the sponge and together they cleaned up the milk
His mother then said, "You know, you failed when you carry a big milk bottle
with two tiny hands. Let's go out in the back yard, fill the bottle with water, and see
if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it." The little boy finally
learned that if he carry the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could
carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!

Do you know the sun's warmth is a kind of useful
energy? Want to try using it yourself? Let's do a cool project
-making a solar tower!
You can try this project at home. You just need some
tape, a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books
Now, we're going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a
piece of square paper, In the second stage, cut off the tops and bottoms of the cans,
place the cans on top of each other and tape them together. Next, use a pin to
connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books
which are 5 cm apart from each other. So there's a gap (间 隔) at the bottom.
allowing the air to enter the tower.
Now, all we have to do is set the whole thing near a window, where there's
direct sunlight. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it
The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn
around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of
the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How
amazing!

When thinking of the Arctic(北冰洋), some
people may imagine an icy land of white snow. And
other people may imagine it as the last really clean
place left on Earth. In fact, we have polluted the
deepest oceans with plastic rubbish, and now, CNN
says,"It's theArctic's turn."
German scientists have recently found
microplastics in Arctic snow.
Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists
found 1,8o0 pieccs of microplastics per liter (升) of snow. That may cause terrible
air pollution.
九年级英语练习(一)第9页(共14页)
How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists. "It's clear
that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air. They fall off plastic
objects and are moved by the wind. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the
groumd as snow."
Are they bad for us? We do know that our bodies cannot take in"large" pieces
of microplastics. Howevcr, if the plastics are small enough. they can find ways intc
our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's
more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer
risk.
Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world
Research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans,
damaging ecosystems along the way. When we wash clothes with plastic fibers, they
start in our wastewater. The wastewater then flows into rivers and out to sea. They
are eaten by sea animals there. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're
eating the plastic as well.
61. What can we learn from what CNN says in Paragraph 1?
A. Arctic has already been polluted by plastic
B. Arctic is the last clean place left to the earth.
C. Arctic is always a pure(纯净) land with white snow
D. Arctic is still a beautiful icy land with clean air
62. What can we infer about the sources of Arctic microplastics?
A. They mainly come from local Arctic pollution
B. They are carried by air from distant regions(地区)
C. They are from melting glaciers(冰川l).
D. They are transported by wind after breaking off plastic objects.
63. What does the underlined word"contribute" in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?
B. increase
C. provide
A.reduce
D. prevent
64. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To tell readers not to eat sea animals.
B. To tell readers not to travel to Arctic.
C. To tell readers to use less plastic products
D To tell readers to protect sea animals in Arctic
65. Which is the best title for this article?
