At the end of a perfect July afternoon in 2016, Raymond awoke from an accident only to find that he’d damaged his neck and could no longer walk or fully use his hands.
But that’s just the beginning of Raymond’s story. A year later, sad with the lack of rehab (康复) resources available for people like himself in New Orleans, the former broadcast engineer decided that his hometown needed an adaptive gym to cater for those with injuries and disabilities (残疾). Based on the need, Raymond financed the establishment (建立) of Split Second Fitness in 2021, with specially designed workout equipment and therapy programs that allow clients to grow stronger without the aim (意图) of making money.
The inspiration for Split Second Fitness came to Raymond as he spent three months at a rehab center in Sacramento, which redefined his understanding of recovery. “I knew I had to get back home and figure out how to do that,” says Raymond, who spent three years raising funds (资金) and learning how to run an organization.
Seated bikes help move disabled users’ legs; yoga instructors help stroke survivors increase flexibility and range of motion; mental health experts facilitate the hard transition to a new way of living… “Anybody’s life can change in a split second like mine did,” explains Raymond. “What our organization is really centered around is ‘How do we give you hope?’ and ‘How can we help you transform that hope into action steps for you to create a better tomorrow?’”
“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability” he says. “Because if I can give you something to look forward to, it will help you get out of the painful process and help you get back on track to a happy and healthy life.” Raymond, who insists he’s just getting started, says that he plans to open similar gyms across the nation. “I want to be remembered as someone who moved the needle on disability advocacy issues.”
4. What do we know about Split Second Fitness?
A. It is open to everyone. B. It is made up of many gyms.
C. It is financed by TV programs. D. It is run on a non-profit (盈利) basis.
5. What inspired Raymond to set up Split Second Fitness?
A. A live broadcast. B. A rehab experience.
C. A request from a fitness center. D. A suggestion from a former workmate.
6. What can we learn about Split Second Fitness from paragraph 4?
A. Its goal and mission (使命). B. Its facilities (设备) and staff.
C. Its background and change. D. Its challenges and difficulties.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A Life with a Disability: a Painful Process
B. Hope in action: a Road to Self-discovery
C. Gyms: Making You Healthier and Stronger
D. Instructors (教练): Helping you become energetic

根据第三段中“The inspiration for Split Second Fitness came to Raymond as he spent three months at a rehab center in Sacramento, which redefined his understanding of recovery. (Raymond在Sacramento的一家康复中心度过了三个月,这段经历重新定义了他对康复的理解。)”可知,Raymond建立Split Second Fitness的灵感来源于他的康复经历。故选B。

When people talk about suddenly remembering old memories , the memories they’ re referring to are usually episodic (情景的) memories. As the name suggests, this type of memory stores the scenes of our life.
Another type of memory that can also be suddenly remembered is semantic memory. Our semantic memory is the storehouse of our knowledge, containing all the facts we know.
Usually, the recall of episodic and semantic memories has easily identifiable triggers (诱因) in our context. Context includes our physical surroundings as well as the aspects of our mental state, such as thoughts and feelings. For example, you’re eating a dish at a restaurant, and its smell reminds you of a similar dish your mom used to make. This is episodic memory. When someone says the word “Oscar”, the name of the movie that won the Oscar recently flashes in your mind. That belongs to semantic memory.
These memories had obvious triggers in our context, but sometimes, the memories that flash in our minds have no identifiable triggers. They seem to flash across our minds out of nowhere; therefore, they’ve been called mind-pops (闪念).
Mind-pops shouldn’t be confused with insight, which is the sudden pop ping up of a potential solution to a complex problem in the mind. Thus, mind- pops are semantic or autobiographical memories that suddenly flash in our minds without an easily identifiable trigger.
Mind-pops may comprise any piece of information, be it an image, a sound, or a word. They’re often experienced by people when they’re engaged in mundane tasks like mopping the floor or brushing teeth. Such ordinary and unexciting routines tend to inspire something in our mind. For example, you’re reading a book, and suddenly, the image of your school corridor pops into your mind for no reason. What you were reading or thinking at the time had no connection to your school.
I do experience mind-pops from time to time. But when I tried to look for cues in my con text that may have triggered my mind-pops, I would fail. Maybe such mind-pops are completely random.
8. Which of the following might be episodic memory?
A. You predict a heavy rain is on the way.
B. A good idea flashes into your mind suddenly.
C. A song reminds you of your middle school graduation.
D. You think of a round shape when hearing the word “circle”.
9. What is a feature of mind-pops?
A. They have obvious triggers. B. They come out without warning.
C. They appear in the form of images. D. They often bring long- lasting memories.
10. What does the underlined word “mundane” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Careful. B. Dull. C. Necessary. D. Challenging.
11. What is the aim of this passage?
A. To explore human inner thoughts. B. To point out the memory formation.
C. To distinguish different memory scenes. D. To explain some similar memory phenomena.
C 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据第三段“For example, you’re eating a dish at a restaurant, and its smell reminds you of a similar dish your mom used to make. This is episodic memory. (例如,你在餐馆吃一道菜,它的味道让你想起了你妈妈以前做过的类似的菜。这就是情景记忆.)”可知,情景记忆就是类似的物质环境和精神状态引起我们曾经的记忆,所以C项“一首歌让你想起中学毕业”属于情景记忆的范畴。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“These memories had obvious triggers in our context, but sometimes, the memories that flash in our minds have no identifiable triggers. They seem to flash across our minds out of nowhere; therefore, they’ve been called mind-pops (闪念). (这些记忆在我们的环境中有明显的触发点,但有时,在我们脑海中闪现的记忆没有可识别的触发点。它们似乎不知从哪里在我们脑海中闪过;因此,它们被称为闪念。)”可知,闪念是在脑海中闪现的记忆,没有可识别的触发点,突然在我们脑海中闪过。故选B项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后面的例子“like mopping the floor or brushing teeth (从事拖地或刷牙)”以及“Such ordinary and unexciting routines tend to inspire something in our mind (这些平凡无奇的日常往往会激发我们的思想)”可知,刷牙、拖地是单调的日常工作,由此推断B选项词义与画线词词义接近。
根据第一段“When people talk about suddenly remembering old memories , the memories they’ re referring to are usually episodic (情景的) memories. As the name suggests, this type of memory stores the scenes of our life. (当人们说突然想起旧记忆时,他们指的通常是情景记忆。顾名思义,这种类型的记忆存储了我们生活中的场景。)”以及第二段“Another type of memory that can also be suddenly remembered is semantic memory. Our semantic memory is the storehouse of our knowledge, containing all the facts we know. (另一种可以被突然记住的记忆是语义记忆。我们的语义记忆是我们知识的仓库,包含了我们所知道的所有事实。)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了什么是情景记忆、语义记忆、闪念及其与顿悟的区别等,由此推断文章的目的是解释一些相似的记忆现象。故选D项。
D
Researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research analyzed historical food prices across various food categories and countries globally, looking at the impact of climatic changes on food inflation (通货膨胀) and the potential implications of future climate change. They found that annual food inflation will rise by 3.2 percent per year and overall inflation by 1.18 percent per year by 2035. And all nations will be impacted, while hot regions and summers will see the most significant consequences.
“Looking at over 27,000 observations of historical data, we found that increases in temperatures can increase food prices, particularly in hot regions and seasons,” said Max Kotz, a co-author of the study, “under future climate conditions, these impacts could become large, threatening the price stability commands of central banks, such as the ECB ( European Central Bank), which aims to keep inflation below 2 percent.”
The report highlighted how rising or unstable prices endanger human welfare and economic and political stability, pointing to United Nations data showing that the cost-of-living crisis in 2021/22 resulted in 71 million more people falling into poverty globally. The study found that increases in temperatures, particularly in hot regions and during summers, lead to heightened inflation levels, which are more pronounced in lower latitudes (纬度) like Africa and South America. Regions at higher latitudes experience seasonal peaks, mostly in the summer months.
Data showed a 1℃ rise in average monthly temperatures affects prices for nearly a year, similarly to extra rainfall. However, price impacts resulting from extreme drought are only temporary. Researchers examined the extremely hot European summer of 2022, when heat and drought had far-reaching effects on agriculture and the economy. “We estimate that the 2022 summer heat extreme increased food inflation in Europe by about 0.6 percent,” said Kotz.
Researchers claimed that future warming projected for 2035 would multiply the impacts of such extremes by up to 50 percent. These effects are particularly relevant for currency unions with a 2 percent inflation target, such as the Eurozone, and will continue to increase with future global warming.
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Natural consequences of climate change. B. The link between food price s and climate.
C. Food prices in hot regions during summers. D. The impact of food inflation on food prices.
13. What might the rising prices lead to according to the researchers’ report?
A. Massive poverty. B. Human welfare.
C. Environmental crisis. D. Economic stability.
14. Why is the European summer of 2022 mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To give an example of the research findings. B. To provide reasons for the researchers’ doubt.
C. To show practical significance of the research. D. To state researchers’ methods for data analysis.
15. What is the researchers’ attitude toward food inflation?
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
B 13. A 14. A 15. D

根据文章第二段“The report highlighted how rising or unstable prices endanger human welfare and economic and political stability, pointing to United Nations data showing that the cost- of- living crisis in 2021/22 resulted in 71 million more people falling into poverty globally. (报告强调了不断上涨或不稳定的价格如何危及人类福利以及经济和政治稳定,并指出联合国的数据显示,2021/22年的生活成本危机导致全球新增7100万人陷入贫困。)”可知,持续增长的价格全让人类福祉,经济稳定及政治稳定陷入危机,且联合国2021/22的数据显示生活成本危机使全球新增7100万人陷入贫困。由此可知,持续的增长可能会导致大规模的贫困。故选A。
根据文章第四段“However, price impacts resulting from extreme drought are only temporary. (然而,极端干旱对价格的影响只是暂时的)”以及“Researchers examined the extremely hot European summer of 2022, when heat and drought had far- reaching effects on agriculture and the economy. (研究人员调查了2022年欧洲极端炎热的夏季,当时炎热和干旱对农业和经济产生了深远的影响。)”可知,提到2022年的欧洲夏季是为了举例说明极端干旱对价格的影响只是暂时的这一结论。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Researchers claimed that future warming projected for 2035 would multiply the impacts of such extremes by up to 50 percent. These effects are particularly relevant for currency unions with a 2 percent inflation target, such as the Eurozone, and will continue to increase with future global warming.(研究人员声称,预计2035年的未来变暖将使这种极端天气的影响增加多达50%。这些影响对欧元区等通胀目标为2%的货币联盟尤其重要,并将随着未来全球变暖而继续增加。)”可知,研究人员认为这样的影响会随着全球气温上升而成倍增强,再根据全文全球变暖会导致全球粮食价格通货膨胀,从而增加大们的生活成本,威胁经济和政治的稳定,可知,研究人员对此非常的关心且担忧的,故选D。

When you sit at your desk, you may constantly be confronted by chaos. ____16____ Here an expert shares about some useful strategies to keep our messes at bay and her decluttering philosophy — getting rid of unnecessary possessions and distractions.
____17____ “What becomes clutter and where your clutter collects can say a lot about what’s going on with you.” Thus the first thing you should keep in mind is to understand your clutter. When you understand the reasons behind your clutter, it’s a lot easier to know what to keep and what to get rid of.
When it comes to organizing, don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you start off with too big a goal, you might get discouraged if the job takes too long. ____18____ Instead, start with something less challenging. You can also work within short time restrictions. All in all, setting realistic goals and breaking tasks up into manageable portions can really help.
Once you’ve chosen an area to declutter, make a list of everything you have in that space. Then comes the hardest part: figuring out what to get rid of. At this stage, please look at your items with neutral eyes. ____19____
Admittedly, it’s easy to be organized the day after decluttering, when tidiness is still top of mind. But what happens when you come home from a trip and are too tired to unpack your luggage? Or when you get the flu and are too sick to clean up? ____20____ In other words, make a system that works for you even when you’ve got to work or when you’ve got a cold.
A. Everyone’s clutter tells a personal story.
B. So don’t restore your entire garage in one afternoon.
C. The key is to create practices that can be easily maintained.
D. It can help you let go of things you don’t need but feel attached.

For 8-year-old Perryn Miller and his family from Holly Ridge, North Carolina, Christmas was anything but relaxing. Their troubles were far more depressing than the regular holiday headaches. Earlier last year, the Millers lost their home to Hurricane Florence. They’ve been staying in a small house ever since.
Last December, the family travelled to Utah to visit their relatives, where they were hoping for a brief break. That was when Perryn started experiencing headaches. His parents, Jacob and Jaimee, received shocking news that their little boy had cancer after a trip to the emergency room. Doctors diagnosed Perryn with glioblastoma multiforme, a rare and aggressive form of brain disease. The family has remained in Utah ever since, so Perryn can go through chemotherapy and radiation at Primary Children’s Hospital. He’s already proved what a little fighter he is by making it through surgery.
His parents are obviously heartbroken, but they say they’re also moved by the outpouring of support they’ve received. Just over two weeks after creating a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Perryn’s medical expenses, they’ve already received nearly $50,000.
For Perryn, though, there was one thing missing in his recovery: the comforting presence of his dog, Frank. Perryn has a deep bond with Frank. Every afternoon, Frank would go to the side of the road to wait for Perryn who would come home on the school bus. However, the 8-month-old German dog had been left behind in North Carolina while they were visiting their relatives in Utah, and it was being looked after by their neighbor. It is 2,300 miles from Holly Ridge, North Carolina to the house of Perryn’s relatives. Under normal circumstances, it takes 52 hours to drive to get to the Primary Children’s Hospital. Perryn’s story quickly spread on social media, where it caught the eye of a former truck driver, Bob Reynolds, who was a stranger to the Millers at that time.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Bob Reynolds decided to offer Perryn an amazing gift. To help Perryn recover soon, he quickly contacted them through the Internet and told them about his plan. The Millers felt that the journey was too far and it was snowing heavily, making it very difficult to drive. So they thanked Bob and told him not to do that. However, Bob said he used to drive along that route, and told them not to worry about him. Finally, the Millers agreed that Bob drove the dog to them.
Then after thorough preparation, Bob set out. After overcoming numerous difficulties, Bob drove 2,300 miles within nearly 60 hours to reunite Perryn with his companion Frank! The Millers were deeply grateful. They said, “Bob deserves all the praise in the world for what he did to brighten a sick little boy’s heart during such a difficult time.” As for Bob, he humbly explained, “I never questioned why I was doing it. I just knew something had to be done.” Bob’s generosity didn’t end there. He’s promised to make the trip again when it comes time for Perryn and his family to go back home!

“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability,” he says.

But when I tried to look for cues in my con text that may have triggered my mind-pops I would fail.
A Careful. B. Dull. C. Necessary. D. Challenging.
11. What is the aim of this passage?
A. To explore human inner thoughts. B. To point out the memory formation.
C. To distinguish different memory scenes. D. To explain some similar memory phenomena.
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
