As a young person, I never thought of myself as a sports enthusiast because I was quite clumsy. But there was one thing I enjoyed: running. It felt like I was soaring (翱翔) through the air. Sadly, this changed when I hurt my knee two years ago. I had to stay in be d for two weeks and even walking a short way was hard for me. I was so upset that I cried as I moved to the car for several days.
When therapy (治疗,疗法) wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a blessing because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away (动摇) by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3-4months of practising hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds (减轻体重) from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms.
Also, practising yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practising with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life!

C
About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy --- who could not have been more than 7 or 8 years old ---replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident(小事件) stuck in my mind because it confirmed(证实) my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.
The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it is certainly different. Children as they once were on longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on innate biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information indiscriminately to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
46. According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.
A. a sure sign of a mental problem in children
B. a mental state present in all humans, including children
C something that can’t be avoided in children’s mental development
D. something hardly to be expected in a young child
47. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world _________.
A. through connection with society B. gradually and under guidance(引导)
C. naturally without being taught D. through watching television
48. According to the author, that today’s children seem adultlike results from __________.
A. the widespread influence of television
B. the poor arrangement of teaching content
C. the fast pace of human scientific development
D. the rising standard of living
49. What does the author think of communication through print for children?
A. It enables children to gain more social information
B. It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.
C. It helps children to read and write well.
D. It can control what children are to learn.
50. What does the author think of the change in today’s children?
A. He feels their adultlike behavior is so funny
B. He thinks the change worth our attention
C. He considers it a rapid development
D. He is extremely upset about it
D 47. B 48. A 49. D 50. B

As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school. D. something hardly to be expected in a young child(在如此小的孩子身上很难想象的事情)符合以上说法,故选D项。
Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders. B. gradually and under guidance(引导)(在引导下循序渐进)符合以上说法,故选B项。

Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it is certainly different. Children as they once were on longer exists. Why? B. He thinks the change worth our attention(他认为这个改变值得思考)符合以上说法,故选B项。
An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. He earned his doctor degree and became a physicist.
Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted — and because he overcame health problems that could have interfered with his studies.
As a young person in Vienna, Austria, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein and Max Planck.
But after World War Ⅱ, his mother advised him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1955 and moved to the United States soon after. In the U.S., he had a successful career studying blood, became a full professor and led the hematology (血液学) department at Brown’s medical school from 1985 to 1994. He helped establish a research program in hematology and directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics.
“It was something like a wish that was never fulilled, that always stuck in the back of my head,” he said. “Once I’m finished with medicine, I really don’t want to spend my life just sitting around and maybe doing a little golfing or doing something like that. I wanted to keep active.
At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes at Brown University. He was planning to just take a few classes that interested him. But by 2007, he had earned enough credits to join the doctoral program.
Physics professor Brad Marston soon realized how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. “He already had a scientific way of thinking that younger students have to develop,” Marston said. “One thing that’s really true about Manfred is he perseveres.”
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the U.S. contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life.
He said his advice is: Do what you love to do.
51. Why does Steiner attach great importance to this degree? (no more than 10 words)
52. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? (no more than 7 words)
53. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 7 words)
54. What is Marston’s comment on Steiner after he joined the doctoral program? (no more than 10 words)
55. What do you think of Steiner? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
51. Because he longed for it and overcame serious health problems./He worked hard toward it and overcame serious health problems. /Because he earned what he wanted and overcame health problems.
52. It is about Steiner’s achievements in medicine./His achievements in medicine./What he achieved in medicine.
53. Steiner always regrets not learning physics./Not learning physics made me regretful. /Steiner felt sorry for not learning physics. /Not learning physics made Steiner feel sorry. /It means he will never forget it / his wish / his dream. /Learning physics was always Steiner’s wish/dream. /The wish wasn’t forgotten. /Steiner never forgot his wish. /Steiner kept his wish in his mind. /His dream/wish was always kept in his mind. /Learning physics was always his wish/dream.
54. He took the subject seriously and worked hard at it./He was serious about the subject and persevered.
55. (Open) I think he is admirable. Because he has a dream and has worked hard for it all his life.

根据第二段中“Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted — and because he overcame health problems that could have interfered with his studies.( Steiner重视这个学位,因为这是他一直想要的——而且因为他克服了可能会干扰他的学习的健康问题。)” Because he longed for it and overcame serious health problems./He worked hard toward it and overcame serious health problems. /Because he earned what he wanted and overcame health problems.
根据第四段中“In the U.S., he had a successful career studying blood, became a full professor and led the hematology (血液学) department at Brown’s medical school from 1985 to 1994. He helped establish a research program in hematology and directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000. (在美国,他的血液研究事业非常成功,1985年至1994年,他成为布朗医学院的正教授,并领导了血液科。他帮助建立了一个血液学研究项目,并指导该项目,直到他2000年从医学退休。)”可知,本段主要是关于Steiner在医学方面取得的成就的。故答案为It is about Steiner’s achievements in medicine./His achievements in medicine./What he achieved in medicine.
根据第三段“As a young person in Vienna, Austria, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein and Max Planck.(在奥地利维也纳,年轻的Steiner在阅读了关于Albert Einstein和Max Planck的书后,想成为一名物理学家。)”和第四段中“But after World War Ⅱ, his mother advised him that studying medicine would be a better choice. (但是在第二次世界大战Ⅱ之后,他的母亲建议他学医是一个更好的选择。)”以及划线词句前文“It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, (这就像是一个从未实现的愿望,)”可知,Steiner梦想是做个物理学家,后来,听从母亲的建议从事了医学,但是他的梦想并没有磨灭。从而推知划线部分“that always stuck in the back of my head”意为“Steiner为没有学习物理而感到遗憾,他永远不会忘记自己想成为一名物理学家的梦想”。 Steiner always regrets not learning physics./Not learning physics made me regretful.

以及Marston 所说“One thing that’s really true about Manfred is he perseveres. He took the subject seriously and worked hard at it./He was serious about the subject and persevered.
通读全文,尤其根据第一段“An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. He earned his doctor degree and became a physicist.(一位89岁的老人终于实现了他为之奋斗了20年的目标。他获得了博士学位,成为了一名物理学家。)”可知,本文主要讲述了Steiner有个想做物理学家的梦想,后来听从母亲的建议从事了医学,但退休后,这位老人最终实现了他的梦想,成为了一名物理学家的故事。故答案可以为I think he is admirable. Because he has a dream and has worked hard for it all his life.

Also practising yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practising with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life!
