As a boy, he had to hike for more than an hour every day across rough hills to collect water from the nearest source. But over time, he realized that during the rainy season, drops of water would gather in the large leaves of banana trees. One day, he and his father built a canal system with the leaves to collect water. He moved to Lima at the age of 25. Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. The idea was to deploy the method he learned in his hometown on a larger, better-adapted scale, which would provide free, independently sourced and easily accessible water to those who needed it most. He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. The nonprofit provided the materials for free, and the community built the infrastructure (基础设施) themselves. At the highest point of Los Tres Miradores, there is a curious set of large structures that is like a fleet of ships in the sky. They are so-called “fog catchers”. The 40 fog catchers there provide enough water for 180 families, whether to bathe, clean, drink (after being filtered at home) or to irrigate crops on small garden patches. Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions. German researcher Lummerich says, “They are cheap, easy to construct. In a world searching for water supply systems, it is one important approach that can make an essential difference locally. It could make the difference between having water and not having water available.” There are some issues, however. For one, fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. At the same time, fog catchers must be properly cleaned and maintained to stay effective. Most crucially, appropriate climate conditions are required. Fog isn’t everywhere. 24. Why did Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005? A. To raise money for the poorest residents. B. To construct the infrastructure for the city. C. To build a canal system for his hometown. D. To offer water to people who need it badly. 25. What does the underlined word “deploy” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Employ. B. Abandon. C. Design. D. Explore. 26. What is the problem with fog catchers in urban areas? A. High expenses. B. Public opposition. C. Technical faults. D. Space limitation. 27. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text? A. A practical application of fog catchers in cities B. The development of a climate organization C. A creative method of improving water supply D. The importance of infrastructure construction 【答案】24. D 25. A 26. D 27. (他开始安装上世纪80年代开发的传统捕雾器模型。)”可知,此处讲述了Cruz产生该想法是因为被当地的水资源贫乏情况震惊,他有了想法后便着手解决该问题。由此可知,这种想法应该是将之前在家乡学到的收集水的方法“使用”到新的环境中,划线词意思应该是“使用”,与employ意思相近。故选A。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“For one, fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. (首先,捕雾器需要空间,这在城市里并不容易找到。)”可知,在城市地区,捕雾器的问题是空间限制。故选D。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文结合倒数第一段的“Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions. C。 C The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies, writing by band has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful— both in school and in life. Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand. Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks — both on a computer and by hand. The study found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate. In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said. Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) “those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time. “In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.” 28. What can we learn from Berninger’s first study? A. It focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer. B. It indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper. C. It found that good essays are made up of long sentences. D. It discussed the importance of writing speed. 29. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling? A. Spelling improves one’s memory of words. B. Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability. C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas. D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas. 30. What is the significance of having a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, as mentioned by Virginia Berninger? A. It allows students to rely solely on spell checks. B. It is unnecessary in the age of computer technology. C. It is a requirement for all students to pass their fifth-grade exams. D. It enables students to choose the correct spelling from computer suggestions. 31. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage? A. Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms. B. Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching. C. Computers can help people with their choice of words. D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade. 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. The study found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.(Berninger和她的同事们进行了一项研究,考察了学生用电脑和用手完成各种写作任务的能力。研究发现,当参与者用笔和纸写作时,他们写的文章更长,句子更完整,单词产出率更快。)”可知,Berninger的第一项研究考察了学生用电脑和用手完成各种写作任务的能力,并且发现参与者用手书写时有更好的效果。由此可知,该研究关注的是用手书写和用电脑写作的不同。故选A。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write.(在最近的一项研究中,Berninger研究了拼写在学生写作技能中的作用,发现孩子们的拼写能力与他们的写作能力有关。)”可知,拼写能力与写作能力密切相关。故选B。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.(但是,在孩子的拼写能力达到大约五年级水平之前,他们不会具备在计算机给出的选项中选择正确拼写的知识。)”可知,达到大约五年级水平的拼写能力可以让孩子具备从计算机建议选项中选择正确拼写的知识。故选D。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful— both in school and in life.(然而,尽管今天的教育者在教学中使用了越来越多的技术,但许多人认为基本的书写技能对于学生在学校和生活中的成功仍然是必要的。)”和第二段中的“it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand(继续教授书写并帮助儿童掌握书写技能非常重要)”并通读全文内容可知,本文主要讨论了书写技能的重要性,并强调教授书写技能非常有必要,由此可推知,书写技能在今天的课堂上仍然有一席之地。故选A。 D According to a study published this week, habitual napping (打盹) appears to be associated with a large brain volume in adults although experts stressed that further research was needed. It reduces the cost caused from the lost time and the fatigue-related errors. The work followed previous studies that suggested a brief doze could improve people’s ability to learn. Arianna Huffington, a co-founder of Huff Post and the founder and chief executive of Thrive Global, said, “Given the latest science on the effectiveness of napping and the clear link between employees feeling well rested and their productivity, it’s long past time that businesses embrace short naps at work.” Some businesses, including Thrive Global, have already introduced facilities for employees to take naps. Google introduced sleep pods as far back as 2014 and companies like Nike and Ben & Jerry’s introduced nap rooms. The practice has even been adopted by the NHS, with a growing number of hospitals introducing sleep pods for staff in an effort to help them get more rest. Employees, it seems, are enthusiastic. Sean Greenwood, of Ben & Jerry’s, said, “If a quick nap gets employees more involved and creative, we’re happy to provide that for our team members.” Unfortunately, the practice of napping still suffers from our collective concept that sleep equals weakness and laziness. However, the performance-enhancing benefits of naps have been no secret to many leaders throughout history. It also gives the higher-ups the chance to acknowledge the 24/7 culture and come up with top-down solutions that encourage workers to take care of themselves in and out of work. While sleep experts stressed that a daytime doze could be beneficial, they said it was crucial to get enough shut-eye at the end of a day. It is the late stage of sleep, sometimes missed by early risers, that strengthens the nerve circuits that make for learning and memory, allowing the brain to make and consolidate new neutral connections. Additionally, prioritizing sufficient sleep during the regular nightly sleep period is essential for overall well-being. 32. What is paragraph 1 mainly about? A. Work stress. B. Learning abilities. C. A research finding. D. The brain volume. 33. What is Arianna Huffington’s attitude toward napping? A. Dismissive. B. Approving. C. Unclear. D. Critical. 34. Why are so many companies mentioned in the passage? A. To advocate enough rest. B. To praise creative employees. C. To compare the differences. D. To present the current situation. 35. What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows? A. The approaches to shut-eye. B. The importance of napping. C. The secrets to well-being. D. The benefits of memory. 【答案】32. C 33. But the price-five dollars was too high for Jack. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family. Jack couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about. Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his shabby shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?” “I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on such things. It should be kept for a while.” Jack respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that hairpin. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Jack suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Jack knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Every day after school, Jack started his plan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Finally, the time came! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Every day after school, Jack started his plan. Cold and hungry, Jack wandered the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the plan. It was the hairpin in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually. Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count them. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Jack rushed for the shop to buy the hairpin. The moment he got the beautiful hairpin, he rushed home and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly into her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes. It was an unforgettable experience, which all the family members will remember. 购买:buy/purchase ③.递给:hand sth. to sb./give sth. to sb. 情绪类 ①.疲劳的:exhausted/tired out ②.开心的:happy/delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1]. The importance of infrastructure construction C The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. In a more recent study Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. C It is a requirement for all students to pass their fifth-grade exams. D According to a study published this week, habitual napping (打盹) appears to be associated with a large brain volume in adults although experts stressed that further research was needed. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Host A Movie Night Summer will soon be here, with fewer commitments like homework. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
