The Apollo Missions
“That's one small step for a man. One giant leap for mankind.”
— Neil Armstrong
Apollo’s Goals
The national effort that enabled Astronaut Neil Armstrong to speak those words as he stepped onto the lunar surface fulfilled a dream as old as humanity. Project Apollo’s goals went beyond landing Americans on the moon and returning them safely to Earth.
Apollo 13
Apollo 13 has been called a “successful failure,” because the crew never landed on the Moon, but they made it home safely after an explosion crippled their ship. When the associated heater was turned on during flight, the tank exploded depleting almost all of the power from the command module and forcing the crew to use the lunar module as a lifeboat. Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert came home safely thanks to the mission control team’s improvised procedures and their own ability to implement them.(Launch: April 11, 1970; splashdown: April 17)
Apollo 14
Notable for the return of America’s first astronaut, Alan Shepard, to space, Apollo 14 also was probably the smoothest lunar landing to that point. The crew spent more than nine hours outside the lunar module and set up a number of experiments. Shepard set a new distance record by walking more than 9,000 feet on the lunar surface, pulling a hand cart to carry their tools and samples.(Launch: Jan. 31, 1971: lunar landing: Feb. 5: splashdown, Feb. 9)
Apollo 15
For the first time, humans drove a car on the Moon. The first of the Apollo “J” Missions-designed for longer stays on the Moon - the mission carried a lunar rover, which Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin used while they were on the surface for more than I8 hours. They traveled more than 17 miles in the rover, setting up experiments and collecting 170 pounds of samples. Before leaving the lunar surface, Scott conducted an experiment to test Galileo’s theory that objects in vacuum, without air resistance, would fall at the same rate. He dropped a geological hammer and a feather, which hit the ground at the same time, proving Galileo right.(Launch: July 26, 1971, lunar landing: July 30: splashdown: Aug. 7)
1. Why has Apollo 13 been called a “successful failure”?
A. Apollo 13 finally exploded as planned in space.
B. All the crew succeeded in landing on the Moon.
C. The crew managed to escape from a severe accident and returned to Earth.
D The crew finished the experiment although they failed to land on the Moon.
2. Which of the following is True according to the passage?
A. It took five days for Apollo 14 to reach the Moon.
B. The lunar rover was used as a lifeboat for space travel.
C. Shepard tested Galileo’s theory successfully on the Moon.
D. Apollo 15 remained in space for the shortest period of time.
3. Which of the following column is this article most likely to be found?
A. Booming Science B. Exploring the Unknown
C Mechanical World D. Transforming Moon

Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing abandoned books. It aroused his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low-income families.
Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutiérrez’s community library is a true representation of how one man’s garbage can be another’s treasure.
Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a passionate reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez.
Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of and is home in southern Bogota, his home in southern Bogota, his home in southern and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books! As word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him thousands more books to grow his library.
Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through garbage cans for reading materials. Today, the Gutiérrez family does not merely want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.
Gutiérrez’s journey to give back to his local community is an amazing example of how every one of us can improve the lives of those around us. How might we take a leaf out of Gutiérrez’s books and impact the less fortunate around us?
4. What inspired Gutiérrez to rescue unwanted books?
A. The abandoned Anna Karenina. B. Leo Tolstoy’s life.
C. Children’s living conditions. D. A community-library.
5. Why did Gutiérrez start “The Strength of Words”?
A. To create a harmonious neighborhood. B. To give his mother sufficient books.
C. To facilitate children’s reading. D. To improve the community life.
6. What can best describe Gutiérrez?
A. Devoted and talented. B. Adventurous and generous.
C. Passionate and well-educated. D. Dedicated and caring.
7. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Desire for reading B. From garbage to treasure
C. Gutiérrez’s kindness D. An amazing model of education

In Japan’s northeast Miyagi county, residents can find life partners via a government-sponsored, Artificial Intelligence-driven matchmaking service. Throughout the land, there are public and company-sponsored singles parties and “life design workshops” meant to urge young adults to make a concrete timeline for marriage and family. The city of Tokyo even teaches basic dating skills, such as the art of conversation.
Japan has the fastest-aging population of any post-industrial nation on earth. The current total birth rate -- the average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime -- is1.3, well below the “replacement level” of 2.1 kids per woman, which is broadly accepted as the rate needed to ensure a stable population.
A periodic survey by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research found close to a fifth of men and about 15% of women expressing disinterest in marriage. Almost a third of men and a fifth of women in their fifties in Japan have never been married.
The country’s leadership is convinced that more marriages are the answer, so Japan’s new Children and Families Agency set to launch in April, will offer “marriage support service” in each of Japan’s 47 counties.
But many experts say the only way Japan can really save itself is by getting rid of the “male breadwinner, female carer” norms (准则) that continue to support policymaking and corporate management. “Post-industrial countries(like Sweden) that made it possible to balance work and family have not suffered large declines in birth rates,” Harvard sociologist Mary Brinton noted in arecent presentation.
Professor Masahiro Yamada, a sociologist at Chuo University, is doubtful whether Japan will escape its existential crisis. “It’s not a problem of matchmaking. It’s an issue of more men with unstable incomes,” he said. “Even among regular workers, relative incomes are falling.”
Lower incomes are far more of a discouragement to marriage in East Asia than in the U.S. or Europe, Yamada says, as Asian men put more emphasis on unilaterally(单方面)earning enough to support children. A truly effective policy, he argues, would double or triple investment in families instead of seniors. “Japan is going to sink, right along with its birth rate,” he warned. “And South Korea and China will be right behind us.”
8. What’s the function of AI-driven matchmaking service?
A. To offer a platform for seeking life partners.
B. To update the country’s basic dating service.
C. To sponsor residents to attend singles parties.
D. To teach young Japanese how to go on dates.
9. What can we learn from paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Birth rate in Japan is higher than aging rate.
B. Japan’s population structure is out of balance.
C. Most of the Japanese dislike children or seniors.
D. Women are less likely to marry than men in Japan.
10. What does Masahiro Yamada think of the matchmaking service?
A. It leads to an increase of income.
B. It touches the surface of the issue.
C. It saves Japan from the present crisis.
D. It departs from Japan’s existing norm.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Can Japan increase its birth rate?
B. Will the service catch on in Japan?
C. Will Japanese men’s incomes rise?
D. Can Japanese balance work and family?
D
Mosquitoes carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make the annoying insects into partners in the fight against the disease.
For years public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is temporary,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, “Because mosquitoes are extremely tough little insects, and their populations can quickly rebound.”
Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is a complete departure from traditional ways of controlling malaria.
To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It’s passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. “If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a tough job.
To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes.
It turned out the malaria-fighting antibodies which gene-edited mosquitoes produced worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host.
James’ team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be conducted on an island or in another isolated location.
But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that naturally occurring methods for reducing malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and release a species that can’t be recalled once it’s released into the wild?” she asks.
12. What can we know from the second and third paragraphs?
A. Mosquitoes reproduce quickly.
B. Mosquitoes depart from malaria.
C. Mosquitoes are malaria-fighting warriors.
D. Mosquitoes’ populations are under control.
13. According to the text, which of the following are attractive to the malaria pathogen?
A. Mice. B. Parasites. C. Mosquitoes. D. Gene-edited mosquitoes.
14. What is environmentalists’ attitude toward this new approach?
A. Tolerant. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations
B. Controlling Malaria by editing Mosquitoes’ genes
C. Curing Malaria with Gene-edited Mosquitoes
D. Preventing Malaria with a new vaccine

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Apple’s vitamin and mineral content, its easy availability, and its inexpensiveness are the reasons why it’s the second most-consumed fruit in the world.___16___ But what about the calories and nutritional value in it? Can we consume apples in endless numbers and still stay fit?
A medium-sized apple contains up to 95 calories. However, the sugar content—about 19g—is still less than the 21g you get in a regular-sized chocolate bar.___17___ The fiber present in fruits and vegetables helps control blood sugar levels naturally. It slows down digestion and stops the blood sugar levels from rising as they would after you consume candy.
Eating one medium-sized apple gives you your daily dose of 14% vitamin A and 11% of vitamin C, both that your immune system needs the most. Antioxidants like vitamin A and C save the body from damage caused by unstable atoms. _______18_______ If we consume darker apples more, we can get an antioxidant that protects the body from diseases and a good amount of indigestible fiber our gut’s good bacteria feed on, so it’s a win-win deal!
_____19_____ Consuming one or two apples on a daily basis is good for your health. But if you’re diabetic, you should restrict the consumption to not more than a small-sized apple a day as apples are a high-sugar fruit. If you stay alert and take a proper diet, your body will benefit a lot. But if you eat endlessly, even the healthiest food in the world would damage your body and increase the number of doctor visits._____20_____
A So act smartly and stay safe.
B. How many apples can you eat in a day?
C. Therefore, you should watch out for the food quality.
D. How can we guarantee that we will get this fruit continuously?
E. Plus, this sugar is less harmful to your body since it comes with fibers.
F. They reduce the risks of illness and aging, giving you healthy and smooth skin.
G. Since it comes in many varieties and different tastes, people never get bored of it.

At this festive time of the year when November turns to December and Christmas approaches, an incident from the past surfaces in my mind, a moment that inspired me to always seek out opportunities to lend a helping hand.
It was nearly twenty years ago, a period when my children were still in their teenage years full of vitality and constantly evolving preferences. I had grown tired of attempting to predict their Christmas wishes, so each year, we took a long car trip to a Shopping Mall. There, I gave them each an envelope stuffed with cash, allowing them to choose exactly what their hearts desired: This specific year, I had thoughtfully saved an extra hundred dollars, intending to treat myself to a few gifts. However, as I walked the length of the Mall, I found myself unable to find anything that truly resonated (产生共鸣) with me.
As we finally climbed into the car, ready to depart, I started the engine and began navigating towards the main road. It was then, amidst the hum of traffic and the glow of streetlights, that I caught sight of her — a homeless woman standing by the roadside. She looked much older than her age. She was dressed in a torn, threadbare coat. er gray hair was tangled (缠结) and clumped together in a messy mass. Her face was chapped (皲裂的) from the winter wind. But the thing that struck me most was her eyes. She had the saddest eyes that I had ever seen.
“Mom, look at that lady,” one of my children said softly, her voice tinged with concern.

D. The crew finished the experiment although they failed to land on the Moon.
C. Mechanical World D.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing abandoned books. It aroused his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage.(20 年前,Gutiérrez在垃圾堆里发现了一本列夫・托尔斯泰的《安娜・卡列尼娜》,自那以后,他的生活便彻底改变了。那是在他夜间驾驶着垃圾车穿行于富人区时,看到了那些被丢弃的书籍。这唤起了他从垃圾中拯救书籍的愿望)”可知,那本被丢弃的《安娜・卡列尼娜》激励他去拯救那些没人要的书。故选A。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low-income families.(最终,他把自己的藏书变成了一个社区图书馆,供低收入家庭的孩子们使用)”以及第四段中的“Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of and is home in southern Bogota, his home in southern Bogota, his home in southern and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books!(如今,他那名为“文字的力量”的临时社区图书馆占据了他位于波哥大南部的家的大部分空间,这里也是图书馆的所在地。馆内藏有各类书籍,包括非虚构类作品。在他收藏的两万多本书籍中,从学校教科书到故事书,应有尽有!)”和第五段中“They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.(他们想为学生创造空间,让他们花时间阅读)”可知,Gutiérrez把收集的书变成了一个社区图书馆,里面有很多适合孩子们的书,并且他想为学龄儿童创造阅读的空间,由此推断Gutiérrez创办“The Strength of Words”是为了方便孩子们阅读。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low-income families.(他过去常常每天早上把 50 到 60 本书带回家。最终,他把自己收藏的书变成了一个面向低收入家庭孩子的社区图书馆)” 可知他每天早上从垃圾中收集书,还把书变成社区图书馆帮助低收入家庭的孩子,这体现了他的奉献精神,结合第五段“Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through garbage cans for reading materials. Today, the Gutiérrez family does not merely want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.(尽管为他的社区做了这么多,Gutiérrez还不满足于结束一天的工作。他继续在垃圾桶里寻找阅读材料。今天,Gutiérrez家族不仅仅想在社区里建立图书馆。他们想为学生创造空间,让他们花时间阅读)”可知,他为社区做了很多事还不满足,继续收集书籍,想为孩子们创造更多阅读空间,这体现了他是有爱心的。故选D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,尤其是第二段中“Gutiérrez’s community library is a true representation of how one man’s garbage can be another’s treasure.(Gutiérrez的社区图书馆真实地展现了一个人的垃圾如何能成为另一个人的宝贝)”可知,文章主要讲述Gutiérrez从垃圾中收集被丢弃的书,将其变成了对孩子们有帮助的社区图书馆,就像一个人的垃圾变成了另一个人的宝藏一样。故B项“From Garbage to Treasure(从垃圾到宝藏)”最能概括本文主旨。故选B。

Lower incomes are far more of a discouragement to marriage in East Asia than in the U.S. or Europe Yamada says, as Asian men put more emphasis on unilaterally(单方面)earning enough to support children.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. A

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Japan has the fastest-aging population of any post-industrial nation on earth. The current total birth rate -- the average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime -- is1.3, well below the “replacement level” of 2.1 kids per woman, which is broadly accepted as the rate needed to ensure a stable population.”(日本是世界上人口老龄化速度最快的后工业化国家。目前的总出生率——一名妇女一生中生育的孩子的平均数量——为1.3,远低于每名妇女生育2.1个孩子的“更替水平”,这一水平被广泛接受为确保人口稳定所需的水平。)根据第三段“A periodic survey by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research found close to a fifth of men and about 15% of women expressing disinterest in marriage. Almost a third of men and a fifth of women in their fifties in Japan have never been married.”(美国国家人口与社会安全研究所(National Institute of Population and Social Security Research)的一项定期调查发现,近五分之一的男性和约15%的女性表示对婚姻不感兴趣。在日本,近三分之一的50多岁男性和五分之一的女性从未结过婚。)可知,日本老龄化严重,生育率低,人口结构不平衡。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段第二句“It’s not a problem of matchmaking. It’s an issue of more men with unstable incomes.”(这不是做媒的问题。
根据第一段第一句“In Japan’s northeast Miyagi county, residents can find life partners via a government-sponsored, Artificial Intelligence-driven matchmaking service.”(在日本东北部的宫城县,居民可以通过政府资助、人工智能驱动的婚介服务找到生活伴侣。)说明日本引进婚介服务旨在促使年轻人结婚生子,并结合下文二三段对日本人口情况的介绍,及后文专家对于解决出生率低的问题的探讨可知,本文主要针对日本能否提高出生率的问题进行了讨论。故选A项。

Mosquitoes carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make the annoying insects into partners in the fight against the disease.
For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
A. So act smartly and stay safe.
【答案】16. G 17. E 18. F 19. B 20. A

【16题详解】
根据上文“Apple’s vitamin and mineral content, its easy availability, and its inexpensiveness are the reasons why it’s the second most-consumed fruit in the world.(苹果富含维生素和矿物质,易于获得,价格低廉,这些都是它成为世界上第二大消费水果的原因)”以及后文“But what about the calories and nutritional value in it? Can we consume apples in endless numbers and still stay fit?(但是它的热量和营养价值呢?我们能吃无数个苹果还能保持健康吗?)”可知,本句与上文并列,都是在说明苹果受欢迎的原因。故G选项“由于它有许多种类和不同的口味,人们永远不会厌倦它”符合语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“A medium-sized apple contains up to 95 calories. However, the sugar content—about 19g—is still less than the 21g you get in a regular-sized chocolate bar.(一个中等大小的苹果含有高达95卡路里的热量。然而,它的含糖量——大约19克——仍然比你从常规尺寸的巧克力棒中获得的21克要少)”以及后文“The fiber present in fruits and vegetables helps control blood sugar levels naturally. It slows down digestion and stops the blood sugar levels from rising as they would after you consume candy.(水果和蔬菜中的纤维有助于自然控制血糖水平。它减缓消化,阻止血糖水平上升,就像你吃糖之后一样)”可知,上文提到苹果含糖,后文则提到了纤维,可知本句属于过渡句,进一步解释这种糖对身体的影响,E选项中fibers对应后文中The fiber。故E选项“另外,这种糖对你的身体伤害较小,因为它含有纤维”符合语境,故选E。
【18题详解】

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “I see her,” I replied, slowing the car to a stop. I opened the car door and stepped outside. As I approached the homeless woman, she looked up, her sad eyes meeting mine with a mixture of hope and skepticism. I felt a pang of guilt wash over me as I realized how easily I had forgotten about the less fortunate during this festive season. “Excuse me,” I called out gently, “We have some money and some food in the car. Would you like some help?” My children, sensing the significance of the moment, hustled over in a rush as well, their faces alight with curiosity and compassion.
The woman hesitated for a moment, but eventually agreed. Her voice trembled as she whispered, “Thank you, thank you so much.” My children quickly grabbed the bags of food and the envelope of money that I had prepared, handing them to her with genuine smiles. The woman clutched the gifts close to her chest, her eyes brimming with tears of appreciation. “God bless you,” she murmured, with heartfelt sincerity. In that brief encounter, I felt a profound sense of fulfillment, knowing that we had made a small but meaningful difference in someone’s life during the holiday season.
