A Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated by all Chinese people. Not everyone celebrates the festival in the same way, with the biggest differences between northern and southern China. Festival Foods In the northern cities of China, people generally eat dumplings. They are called jiaozi in Chinese, which means the turn of a lunar new year. Additionally, because they are shaped similarly to a type of ancient money, jiaozi are also regarded as a symbol of wealth. As compared to the north, people from some southern areas traditionally eat rice cakes (niangao in Chinese), which are made of sticky (黏的) rice flour. Niangao can be interpreted as that people move up to a higher position year after year. Festival Decorations It is a common tradition to put up Spring Festival couplets (对联) and “Fu” characters, but some decorations differ a bit between northern and southern China. In the north, the red “Chinese knot (结)” is also hung, representing happiness. However, in the southern areas, people like to use kumquats, a fruit like a very small orange, for decorations. Due to their yellow colour, they are usually a sign of wealth and harvest. Red Envelope In northern China, people usually give red envelopes to the children of their relatives or close friends only. However, people in southern China not only give red envelopes to the children of their relatives and friends, but also to their colleagues and acquaintances. In some southern areas like Guangdong Province, a company manager or a shop owner may also give red envelops to staffs on the first working day of the New Year, wishing for a fortune and giving them a strong sense of team spirit. 1. Why are dumplings seen as a symbol of wealth? A. They look like a type of ancient money. B. They have the meaning of getting to a higher position. C. Only rich families could afford them in ancient times. D. The name for “dumplings” meant money in the past. 2 Which celebration might NOT be practised in southern China? A. Making and eating rice cakes. B. Hanging red Chinese knots in the room. C. Giving red envelops to colleagues’ children. D. Placing kumquats in the room. 3. Why do company managers in southern area give red envelops to their staffs? A. They want to award their staff for their good performance. B. They wish to encourage their staffs to work harder. C They wish that they all will make a lot of money. D. They want to show their companies are very rich. A 2. B 3. 根据第二段的“Additionally, because they are shaped similarly to a type of ancient money,  jiaozi  are also regarded as a symbol of wealth.(此外,因为它们的形状类似于古代的一种钱,饺子也被视为财富的象征。)” 故选A。 根据第五段的“In the north, the red “Chinese knot” is also hung, representing happiness. However, in the southern areas, people like to use kumquats, a fruit like a very small orange, for decorations.(在北方,红色的“中国结”也被挂起来,代表幸福。然而,在南方地区,人们喜欢用金橘,一种像非常小的橘子的水果,作为装饰。) ”可知,在中国南方,房间里是不挂着红色的中国结的。故选B。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段的“In some southern areas like Guangdong Province, a company manager or a shop owner may also give red envelops to staffs on the first working day of the New Year, wishing for a fortune and giving them a strong sense of team spirit.(在一些南方地区,如广东省,公司经理或店主也会在新年的第一个工作日给员工发红包,希望他们发财,并给他们强烈的团队精神。)” C。 B Aeron McQuillin, 18, Bailey Campbell, 17, and Billy Tarbett, 15, were on their way to a supermarket in Fonthill, Ontario, when they spotted a woman on the side of the road with smoke coming out of her car. They quickly found the problem and determined the car was too dangerous to drive. The driver couldn’t afford a tow truck (拖车). So, Billy suggested that they push the car. The woman lives more than five miles away. Dan Morrison, who also stopped to help, told CNN the driver's jaw dropped on hearing the teens' offer. Bailey told CNN they just wouldn't want to be stuck like that, so they insisted. The three bought bottles of water and a speaker and started their journey. Morrison drove behind them with his hazard lights (警示灯) on for safety. Bailey said they faced several problems. The first was a big hill 300 yards from the start. Halfway through, they took a break and the battery died. After more than two and a half hours of pushing, they finally delivered the car back home. Bailey described the motorist as both thankful and amazed. They exchanged hugs, and everyone went home for some much-needed rest. The teens never got the woman's full name. Morrison took a couple of pictures of the teens, hoping to turn them into hometown heroes on social media. His Facebook post went viral, with positive comments coming in from as far away as Australia. 4. Who proposed pushing the woman's car? A. Dan Morrison. B. Billy Tarbett. C. Aeron McQuillin. D. Bailey Campbell. 5. Why did Morrison take a couple of photos of the teens? A. To meet the teens' request. B. To record their good deeds. C. To praise them on social media. D. To make himself go viral on social media. 6. How can we best describe the journey? A. Tough. B. Joyful. C. Adventurous. D. Thrilling. 7. What did the teenagers do with the motorist after delivering the car back to the destination? A. They told the driver their names. B. They had a rest at the driver's home. C. They drank some water at the driver's home. D. They each put their arms around the driver. 4. B 5. C 6. C 7. And this means that they try and avoid foods that have too much sugar or artificial ingredients Sugary drinks can be one of the main items that moms avoid, and that is because they are bad for their children’s teeth and health. A new study, however, is showing that a sugary drink in the morning may not be so bad after all, at least not for girls. According to Medical Xpress, consuming sugary drinks before class has been shown to improve math scores, but only in girls. It has little impact on boys. This was shown through a study that was published in the journal Health Economics. It found that sugary drinks had a direct impact on the behavior and math scores of children in preschool. It seems a little early to be offering the children sugary drinks, but let’s find out what they discovered. To complete the study, researchers looked at more than 450 children, and the children in the study were given a sugary drink or an artificially sweetened (人工加糖的) drink and then they collected data before and after they had drunk it. When it came to boys and their behavior, they found that one sugary drink did seem to have a “relaxing” effect on them at first, but it didn’t last long and then they were more restless. The sugary drink did not result in any difference in a girl’s behavior. They then looked at math scores, and it showed that consuming a sugary drink had a negative impact on boys’ math scores, but it had a positive impact on the math scores of the girls. “There are still a lot of schools that sell and hand out sugary drinks to students, and while this may seem to benefit girls, it could be making things more difficult for young boys,” says one of the researchers. 8. What is moms’ attitude to children’s drinking sugary drinks? A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unfavorable. 9. What effect do sugary drinks have on children according to the study? A. They make girls relaxed. B. They help girls stay healthy. C. They benefit girls in math. D. They supply boys with more inspiration. 10. What can we infer from the researcher’s words? A. Schools should be careful about selling sugary drinks to students. B. Sugary drinks have attracted more school girls than school boys. C. School girls should drink more sugary drinks before class. D. School boys should drink more sugary drinks than school girls. 11. What can be the best title for the text? A. School girls may be much better at math than school boys B. Sugary drinks prove to be harmful to our health C. School children are consuming too many sugary drinks D. Sugary drinks may help improve girls’ math scores 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第一段中“Sugary drinks can be one of the main items that moms avoid, and that is because they are bad for their children’s teeth and health.(含糖饮料可能是妈妈们避免的主要项目之一,因为它们对孩子的牙齿和健康有害)”可知,妈妈们不支持孩子喝含糖饮料。 根据第二段中“According to Medical Xpress, consuming sugary drinks before class has been shown to improve math scores, but only in girls.(据Medical Xpress报道,上课前喝含糖饮料可以提高数学成绩,但只针对女生)”及第三段中“This was shown through a study that was published in the journal Health Economics.(发表在《健康经济学》杂志上的一项研究表明了这一点)”可知,研究表明,含糖饮料使女孩在数学方面受益。 根据最后一段研究人员说的话“There are still a lot of schools that sell and hand out sugary drinks to students, and while this may seem to benefit girls, it could be making things more difficult for young boys(现在仍有很多学校向学生出售和分发含糖饮料,虽然这似乎对女孩有利,但可能会让男孩的处境更加困难)”可知,含糖饮料会使男孩的处境更加困难,所以学校在向学生出售含糖饮料时应该谨慎。故选A项。 通读全文,结合第二段中“A new study, however, is showing that a sugary drink in the morning may not be so bad after all, at least not for girls.(然而,一项新的研究表明,早上喝一杯含糖饮料可能并不是那么糟糕,至少对女孩来说不是)”可知,本文主要讲述了一项研究结果,含糖饮料对女孩提高数学成绩有益,故D项“含糖饮料可能有助于提高女孩的数学分数”适合作为文章标题。故选D项。 D Programs that drive the digital experiences today seem to turn to contents that are popular, and they are unable to tell facts from fictions. And due to the fact that anyone can post anything they want online, unconfirmed reports and irresponsible and unchecked contents are common in the online world. The problem is so common that the British newspaper The Independent has a whole page contributed to news about fake news, along with Mashable’s social media and a growing number of others. During the past days when most kids used textbooks that had been edited and reviewed responsibly before they were used, the need for students to check their sources was not great. Today, it’s different. Students use the Internet for research, and teachers and parents can’t keep them away from bad contents all the time. And they’re on their own as they get older. They have to master information literacy, the skills of recognizing bad information, identifying good information, and understanding the difference between the two. There are people and organizations dealing with the problem and developing information for Internet searchers, both adults and children. The website of Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, has provided Internet searchers with extra information at the top right of their results page. The move was intended to make people slow down and think twice before accepting search results as facts. Fake news is here to stay. We all need to fight. We can start with awareness and a few rules: don’t make the web full of bad information: don’t spread or share information if you aren’t sure about it. And be mindful of how we use information: practice information literacy. And human curiosity is of great importance in this fight against misinformation. Curiosity drives learning and makes people question information. We need everyone to join in researching and questioning for the truth. 12 What problem is described about the online world? A. We are given too much information. B. Useless results often show up first online. C. The Internet includes much fake information. D. Fake news is spread purposely to attract searchers. 13. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about? A. The need for information literacy. B. Different generations’ learning style. C. How networks affect today’s students. D. Why fake contents exist on the Internet. 14. What does the website of Encyclopedia Britannica do for searchers? A. It marks the facts. B. It provides more details. C. It corrects the search results. D. It alarms searchers if necessary. 15. Which of the following would the author agree with? A. It is hard to clean up all fake news. B. We can’t speak freely in cyberspace. C. People should be forced to follow the rules. D. We should keep curious to discover the truth. 【答案】12 C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第一段“Programs that drive the digital experiences today seem to turn to contents that are popular, and they are unable to tell facts from fictions. And due to the fact that anyone can post anything they want online, unconfirmed reports and irresponsible and unchecked contents are common in the online world.(如今,推动数字体验的程序似乎转向了流行的内容,它们无法区分事实和虚构。由于任何人都可以在网上发布任何他们想要的东西,未经证实的报道以及不负责任和未经核实的内容在网络世界中很常见)”可推知,第一段中描述的问题是网络上存在很多虚假信息。故选C。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“During the past days when most kids used textbooks that had been edited and reviewed responsibly before they were used, the need for students to check their sources was not great. Today, it’s different. Students use the Internet for research, and teachers and parents can’t keep them away from bad contents all the time. And they’re on their own as they get older. They have to master information literacy, the skills of recognizing bad information, identifying good information, and understanding the difference between the two.(在过去的日子里,大多数孩子使用的教科书在使用之前都经过了认真的编辑和审查,所以学生们不太需要检查它们的来源。今天,事情不同了。学生使用互联网进行研究,老师和家长不能一直让他们远离不良内容。随着年龄的增长,他们只能靠自己。他们必须掌握信息素养,识别好坏信息的技能,并理解两者之间的区别)”可知,第三段主要讲述了信息素养的重要性。故选A。 根据第四段中“The website of Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, has provided Internet searchers with extra information at the top right of their results page. The move was intended to make people slow down and think twice before accepting search results as facts.(例如,大英百科全书网站就在搜索结果页面的右上方为互联网搜索者提供了额外的信息。此举旨在让人们在接受搜索结果为事实之前放慢脚步,三思而后行)”可知,大英百科全书网站为搜索者提供了更多的细节。故选B。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“And human curiosity is of great importance in this fight against misinformation. Curiosity drives learning and makes people question information. We need everyone to join in researching and questioning for the truth.(在与错误信息的斗争中,人类的好奇心非常重要。好奇心驱动学习,让人们质疑信息。我们需要每个人都参与到对真相的研究和质疑中来)”可推知,我们应当保持好奇心以发现真相。故选D。 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余无关选项。 If you are making the time to exercise, that is a good thing indeed! This made Emily feel torn (为难) between her passion and her responsibilities Each day, Emily trained herself for hours. C Only rich families could afford them in ancient times. D. The name for “dumplings” meant money in the past. 2. Which celebration might NOT be practised in southern China? C. They wish that they all will make a lot of money. D. They want to show their companies are very rich. B Aeron McQuillin, 18, Bailey Campbell, 17, and Billy Tarbett, 15, were on their way to a supermarket in Fonthill, Ontario, when they spotted a woman on the side of the road with smoke coming out of her car. The woman lives more than five miles away. Dan Morrison, who also stopped to help, told CNN the driver's jaw dropped on hearing the teens' offer. D. D School boys should drink more sugary drinks than school girls. 11. What can be the best title for the text? A. School girls may be much better at math than school boys B. Sugary drinks prove to be harmful to our health C. School children are consuming too many sugary drinks D. Sugary drinks may help improve girls’ math scores D Programs that drive the digital experiences today seem to turn to contents that are popular, and they are unable to tell facts from fictions. 12. What problem is described about the online world? A. We are given too much information. B. Useless results often show up first online. C. The Internet includes much fake information. D. Fake news is spread purposely to attract searchers. 13 What does the third paragraph mainly talk about? If you are making the time to exercise, that is a good thing indeed!
