Why do We Yawn?
Do you yawn (打哈欠) ? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
15. What does the underlined word “contagious” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Able to spread quickly. B. Able to breathe easily. C. Able to change easily.
16. Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race?
A. They are too tired or too bored. B. A yawn can let good things in. C. A yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
17. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Different ideas about yawning. B. The good of yawning. C. The bad of yawning.
18. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ________ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

When people across China are preparing for the Spring Festival, a Chinese AI app is becoming popular around the world. The Chinese AI app DeepSeek became the most popular free app on the Apple App Store worldwide, ahead of ChatGPT from OpenAI, Gemini from Google, and Llama 2 from Meta.
In January 2025, the Chinese AI company DeepSeek introduced its new open-source model (开放源代码模型), DeepSeekR1. Because this model has made progress by using deep learning methods that let the AI develop reasoning skills by itself, it can work as well as the best models from big companies like OpenAI. It can answer math questions, write computer codes, and even explain difficult texts in simple ways. Ms. Li, an English teacher, said, “Its five clear steps to solve problems, just like a patient teacher.”
What surprises the world most is that the cost for users will be lower than that of other companies. The app quickly caught the world’s attention: Marc Andreessen, a famous business expert in Silicon Valley, wrote online, “DeepSeekRl is one of the most amazing and exciting developments I’ve ever seen.”

Protect the Traditions: Let’s Do Our Part!
In recent years, my hometown has changed a lot. New buildings and modern facilities make life easier, but some traditional cultures are disappearing. For example, old houses are replaced by new ones, and young people know less about traditional festivals and skills.
To protect our culture, we can take some steps. First, it’s a good idea for school to teach students about traditional customs and crafts. Second, it’s better for the government to protect old buildings and turn them into museums. Third, why not celebrate traditional festivals in fun ways, like lantern shows or dragon boat races. Finally, I suggest that we use the Internet to share our culture with more people.
In short, while our hometown is developing, we should also protect our traditions. Let’s work together to keep our culture alive!
