M:That’s incredible.Where is it now?
W:The man who discovered it brought it to a museum. Before, the remains of these huge whales had only been uncovered in Peru,Chile, and the USA,and they dated back to around twelve to thirteen million years ago. This tooth is the first one of its kind to be found outside of the Americas, and the animal lived much more recently.I’d love to go to see it.
M:Who was the guy that found it?
W:Just some guy who had gone to the beach. He knew the tooth was something important.
M:Wow.Imagine finding something like that.I’m not sure I’d even know what it was.
W:Scientists calculated that the whale it belonged to was about 60 feet long and weighed 88,000 pounds.
M:I can’t believe there were animals that big in our oceans once!

My wife’s birthday falls at the beginning of spring when the winter chill still hangs over the approaching warmth.
On that day,I came home from work, stopped her from entering the kitchen and asked her to dine out.“Has Lily called?” she asked.I shook my head. The atmosphere at the dinner was oppressive. My wife kept glancing at her phone, showing no signs of appetite.
Early the next morning,my wife got up,dark rings encircling her eyes.We only have one child. When Lily still lived at home, every year when her birthday approached,we would start the grand preparations days in advance. And after she left for college,my wife would call her countless times from morning till night. How could she ignore all our love and utterly forget her mum’s birthday? On the way to work,I texted Lily,“Your mum didn’t sleep well last night.”
Another day concluding,we were about to go to bed when there was a sound of a key rattling in the lock.In came our daughter, face red with cold, birthday cake in hand.“Sorry,Mum.Happy birthday!” she said, tears welling up.Immediately,my wife pulled Lily into a hug, complaining,“You silly girl, why do you come all the way back at such a time? Don’t you know it is cold outside?”
Lily just stayed two hours in case of missing her classes.Seeing Lily boarding the train,my wife started blaming me for that message, yet in a better mood.I did feel I handled this matter perfectly both for my wife and my child’s growth.
Later,I called my parents and told them about it.I never thought they would respond with a long silence, and then said:“How many times have you forgotten our birthdays? Has either of us ever complained?”

The world is drowning in plastic waste. The huge piles in landfill sites are growing fast. Therefore,it is most urgent to move away from the traditional linear economic model and change to a fully circular economy. To help this transformation,Igus,a Germany-based manufacturer of high-performance plastics, has been developing and investing in the work of recycling plastics for many years. The company is now showing the world a new product, the “igus:bike”,which is the world’s first urban bike produced almost entirely from recycled polymer(聚合物).
Igus CEO Frank Blasé first got the idea while vacationing on a Florida beach.A conversation with employees at a rental company made him aware of the challenges of maintaining beach bicycles. The continuous exposure to sand, wind, and saltwater caused the bikes to rust(生锈) rapidly. Many had to be replaced in as little as three months. The “igus:bike” is zero maintenance and rust-free.It can be left outdoors in all weather and does not require lubricant oil to reduce friction between parts.Since it does not attract sand, dust,or dirt, the bike can be cleaned in seconds.
The “igus:bike” will also help relieve the world’s plastic pollution problems. The company says a single adult bike gives new life to about 35 pounds of single-use plastic that would otherwise block our landfills or waterways. For example, the first prototypes were made of material from old fishing nets.Currently,90% of the “igus:bike” is made using plastic.Igus believes future versions will be made entirely from plastic.
The plastic bikes are expected to come to market soon.An adult model, made entirely from recycled plastic, will cost about $1,430.A slightly cheaper version made using new plastic is also in the works.Igus also plans on sharing its technology with other bicycle manufacturers.“We want to enable the bicycle industry to produce plastic bikes,” says Blasé.

Tomatoes are common in daily life.Cathie Martin,a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years.Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomato has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS,are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage.Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them.Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO.Martin added two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon.Soon her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS.Even better, the tomatoes remained fresh almost twice as long as normal tomatoes.Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes.Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like.We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s.But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so,many people have concerns about them.Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway,on September 7,2022,the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.

Ways to Have a Productive Wednesday
Monday and Tuesday have already come and gone, and it’s officially the middle of the workweek.Congratulations on making it halfway through! Here’s how to make your Wednesday go as smoothly as possible. Before you know it,Friday will already be knocking on your door.
Prioritize(优先) the difficult assignments. 36 Writer and essayist Nicolas Cole writes about what unproductive people do,including “accidentally” canceling “their hardest tasks”.“Unproductive people find every reason in the world to prioritize making another to-do list over digging into their hardest tasks.Productive people do the opposite,” Cole writes.
Don’t be a computer zombie(僵尸),but head outside for a walk. While letting your eyes glaze over as you struggle through the day can be a tempting option, you’ll probably need to take some time away from your desk to truly focus. 37
Hands off the phone! More time scrolling through social media feeds(讯息) on your phone means less time crossing things off your to-do list.Try hiding your phone somewhere that isn’t in plain view as you work at your desk. 38 Also turn off certain announcements so you have fewer opportunities for distraction.
Hit a roadblock?Think of yourself as someone else. 39 Put some space in between you and your problems to help decrease your anxiety. If that doesn’t work for you, imagine that your friend is in the situation instead.
40 Whether you love your job or are just getting by,work shouldn’t be your everything.Revisit that page-turner you stopped reading a while back, spend time with family or friends,or get back in touch with your hobby at a class after work.
A.It might just be out of sight, out of mind.
B.It can create a relaxing Wednesday routine.
C.Do something to enjoy life outside of work.
D.If you work, you have a sense of completeness.
E.So go outside for a quick walk and a breath of fresh air.
F.Don’t put them off,for you won’t be able to bury them forever.
G.Science says that thinking of yourself in the third person can help you prevent stress.

37.答案 E
解析 上文建议出去走走,不要长时间坐在电脑前。因为花些时间放松有助于提高专注力。选项E“所以出去散散步,呼吸一下新鲜空气”与上文意思一致,为上文内容的总结。故选E。
38.答案 A
解析 上文建议在工作时把手机藏在一个不容易看到的地方。下文同样是减少分心的方法。选项A“也许只是眼不见,心不念”承上启下,符合语境。故选A。
39.答案 G
解析 根据上文“Think of yourself as someone else.”

Jessie had two days’ leave in January this year. She surfed the Internet for cheap travel deals and found the most impressive to be a two-day trip to Dublin.Jessie had never visited Ireland so she knew this was the destination for her.
She arrived in Dublin and headed for her hotel. She was excited. When she found her hotel, she paid her money for both nights in advance. The receptionist(接待员) said that was possibly the smartest thing she had done since she decided to take the trip.Jessie dropped her bags in her room and immediately went out to check out some of the sights. It was getting late as Jessie wandered in the streets and decided that even though she was starving, she would rather wait to have dinner later after having a drink.
She headed into the closest pub.Jessie noticed a rather strange-looking man staring at her from across the room.He walked to her table and asked her in his most polite manner if she would like to have a beer. After about ten seconds of thought,Jessie came to the conclusion that she would and accepted the offer. But she proposed that she should treat him to some fruits. The man smiled and accepted.
Their conversation was mainly about places they had been and places they wanted to go to.Jessie soon found out that he was traveling alone too and as soon as he started mentioning that he was staying in the same hotel as her,Jessie swiftly rose from her seat to get another drink.
Searching through her bag Jessie found that her wallet was gone! Immediately she realized she took the wrong bag.Her wallet was in another bag.Jessie didn’t panic at first until it hit her that without it,she had not one penny in hand. She was starving.Worst of all,she had generously proposed a treat to the man.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Without explaining the situation,Jessie ran back to the hotel.
The man was still there.
参考范文
Without explaining the situation,Jessie ran back to the hotel.Seeing Jessie dashing inside, the receptionist was curious and inquired what had happened.Jessie told her the embarrassing situation in the pub and the receptionist burst into laughter. She said Jessie shouldn’t have worried too much and could have called her for help.Jessie expressed her gratitude and ran to her room and wallet as soon as possible. She must go back to the pub or she would be regarded as a cheat.Luckily the pub was near and soon Jessie got there.
The man was still there. When he saw Jessie again he was completely puzzled. He stood up but didn’t know what to say.Jessie smiled, told him the whole situation, and explained that she didn’t want to be treated as a cheat, which made him burst into laughter too.But he jokingly told Jessie “If I hadn’t proposed an offer of beer, you wouldn’t have realized that you didn’t bring money with you.So treat me to two beers please!” They both laughed.Of course they became friends.
