Most Famous Libraries in the World
Trinity College Library
Designed by Thomas Burgh, the library is the largest in Ireland. Construction on the Long Room, the library’s 65-meter-long main hall, began in 1712 and lasted 20 years. The original structure only had books on the lower level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling was raised to accommodate even more books. Today the Long Room holds 200,000 of the library’s oldest books.
Stuttgart City Library
Opened in 2011, the German library is a splendid light-gray cube consisting of glass blocks designed by Eun Young Yi. Inside it, you’ll find an airy central room, above which sits a multi-story stepped reading room lined with bookshelves. The library towers over the nearby buildings.
Library of Parliament
Taking the form of a Victorian Gothic chapter house complete with 16 flying buttresses, the 1876 Library of Parliament is one of Canada’s prized architectural treasures — it’s on the ten-dollar bill. Architects Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones took inspiration from the British Museum Reading Room for the structure, lining the central hall with delicate wood shelves and wood carvings.
Rampur Raza Library
Founded in the late 18th century, the Indian library is home to a massive collection of Islamic and Asian texts and objects. The pink structure that houses the collection today was built in 1904 by Nawab Hamid Ali Khan as a mansion of Indo-European style, The Rampur Raza Library was later shifted to this grand building in 1957.

Half a year ago, Lacey Scott was shopping for supplies at a local pet store in Kansas City, Missouri. When she was in that location, a bored face of a little goldfish attracted her attention, and she didn’t stop staring at it the entire time she was there.
Lying at the bottom of a dark fish tank, the sad fish didn’t appear to have much of a wish to survive. Lacey learned from a store clerk that the fish was ten years old and had spent a long time in that depressing tank.
“I couldn’t take my mind off him. I couldn’t bear the thought of a fish who had wasted so much of its life and would end up dying in a pet store,” Lacey said.
Lacey approached the store owner and asked if she could take the small fish home with her.
What no one realized was that the small fish’s best days were still to come: all it needed was a second chance.
Lacey returned home and built a pond out of various materials for the fish she named “Monstro”. She changed his water every day to keep it clean and fresh, and fed him with only the fish food. Monstro, on the other hand, did not appear to be enjoying his new living environment, not even moving to have his meal.
Despite this, Lacey did not give up on him and continued to provide him with specialized care. “I found him swimming for small amounts of time after a month,” Lacey said. “And it was at that point that I realized things began to change.”
Monstro’s body began to change as well. The gray scales (鱼鳞) that made him seem unwell began to change colors. His small body began to shine, showing that his condition had improved greatly.
Lacey put Monstro into a much larger tank once he had fully recovered, where he continues to live in the greatest possible way.
24.Why did the goldfish at the pet store catch Lacey Scott’s attention?
A.He was a rare type of goldfish.
B.He looked sad and was tired of life.
C.He looked energetic, colorful and lovely.
D.He was so old that he could hardly move.
25.How was the fish when he just arrived at Lacey’s home?
A.He tried to jump out of the pond.
B.He adapted to his new life very quickly.
C.He seemed not to be fond of his new home.
D.He appeared to be dead and floated on the surface.
26.When did Lacey start to find Monstro’s change?
A.The fish began to swim in the pond.
B.The fish started to eat a lot of food.
C.The fish’s scales began to change colors.
D.The fish came to the surface to breathe.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.A goldfish bought by a woman recovers from his injury.
B.A woman builds a new pond for an active goldfish.
C.A kind woman saves a goldfish from being killed.
D.A goldfish adopted by a woman starts a new life.
C
Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people.
According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster.
When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.
This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life.
28.Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe”?
A.Practice. B.Provide. C.Suggest. D.Explore.
29.What is the function of paragraph 2?
A.To clarify a concept. B.To lead in the topic.
C.To make a conclusion. D.To provide evidence.
30.How does nature help people according to the two major theories?
A.Refresh oneself. B.Live a better life.
C.Improve urban environments. D.Deal with stressful issues.
31.What can be inferred according to paragraph 4?
A.It is not easy to get in nature.
B.Nature treatment is still unpopular.
C.Most patients prefer nature treatment.
D.Doctors usually recommend nature to patients.
D
People hate mosquitoes due to their blood-sucking tendencies. Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been researching ways to keep them away. A team of researchers from Virginia Tech in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors attract mosquitoes.
After analyzing the mosquitoes’ behavior, the researchers discovered several chemicals in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”. Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and the other with the scent (气味) of flowers, can keep the insects away.
The team also found that what matters to mosquitoes is not just the chemicals, but rather the combination of chemicals with each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel (驱除) mosquitoes by using another kind of soap. The findings were “remarkable”, said senior author Clement Vinauger in a news release, adding that he would choose a coconut-scented soap to keep mosquitoes away
How these insects manage to find humans has also made scientists curious. According to a new study published in Current Biology, researchers built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans. The pads were heated to imitate sleeping humans. They found that the insects can track scents up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid, which is usually produced by bacteria on human skin. The smell of one participant wasn’t attractive to the insects, and researchers believed it was due to the person’s diet, which is a mainly plant-based food.
By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent (驱蚊剂) With more studies, scientists believe changing a person’s diet could one day make them “mosquito-proof”. This is especially beneficial for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria, CNN reported.
32.What did the researchers from Virginia Tech try to find out?
A.What soap scents can help avoid mosquitoes.
B.How many soap flavors attract mosquitoes.
C.Why mosquitoes prefer certain soap flavors.
D.What kind of people attracts mosquitoes most.
33.How did researchers study mosquitoes’ ability to track humans?
A.By making volunteers fall asleep.
B.By heating pads with human scents.
C.By watching mosquitoes in the natural world.
D.By building a canteen shared with mosquitoes.
34.Which of the following may attract mosquitoes most?
A.The scent of flowers. B.Combination of different smells.
C.A person with a plant-based diet. D.Carboxylic acid
35.What is the best title of the passage?
A.How to Kill Mosquitoes? B.What Kind of Soap Is Most Useful?
C.Using Soap Is of Great Significance D.Soap Science Beats away Bug Bites

With the sports meet approaching, we could hardly concentrate on our daily routine. Every day, we spent much of our spare time 57 (talk) about the weather for fear that the sports meet might be postponed again. Then finally came the big day, when the sports meet was held as 58 (schedule). The sports meet was pretty impressive. One of the highlights 59 (be) the parade before the start of the race. Students were marching past the podium with slogans high up in their hands, while spectators were screaming 60 (crazy). Shortly after the parade was over, the race started. Well known for running in junior high school, I 61 (recommend) to enter for the 3000-meter running race, representing my class.
Time was ticking away. Before I knew it, it was my turn to step onto the track. But all of 62 sudden, I felt a bit panicky. As I hadn’t received any training recently, I puffed and panted halfway. I was about 63 (quit) when my classmates cheered me on all the way. Anyway, I made it to the finishing line. Unable to earn a single point for my class, I was 64 low spirits. A few weeks ago, when my mom and I were shopping,we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And,right then and there,my mom said,“I know the perfect song and dance.I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t,”my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week.Oh,and just to be clear,it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer (演员).My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,”I said on our way home,“are you sure this is such a good idea?”
“Of course!” she said.“If we want your school’s Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.”
“I know volunteering is important,” I said.“But couldn’t you help out in another way instead?”
She laughed.“Don’t be silly. We’ll have great fun!”
“OK,everyone,”my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday.“We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair.”
“Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest hat.
“I’m super excited to be here with you!”my mom said.“I’m going to teach you a fun little songanddance number I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh,please,oh,please,I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill (演习) or a power outage (停电),or anything to stop my mom for completely embarrassing herself—and me!
But obviously,my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
