Have you ever wished you could talk to the “you” from the future? Well, now there’s a new AI project called Future You that’s trying to make that happen.
First, Future You uses AI to ask you questions about who you are, what your life is like now, and what you want to do in the future. Then it collects all the information and creates a picture of you when you’re 60 years old. So you can ask this “future you” questions and get advice for what’s to come.
Future You can even show you a picture of what you might look like at 60. A scientist said, “The system makes the pretend version (虚拟版本) really seem like the real deal. Future You is a lot more detailed (详细的) than just thinking about your future self in your head.”
The website of Future You says it’s meant to help you think more about the long term by making you feel more connected to your future self. If you feel more tied to that future you, you’re more likely to make good choices for your future, like with money, school, or your health. Scientists tested Future You on 344 people. The ones who talked to Future You for 10 to 30 minutes felt less worried and more motivated about the unknown future.
But Future You isn’t perfect. A professor said, “We don’t know if people actually did anything different or changed how they act because they talked to their future self.” Also, the AI can only show one possible future, not different ones. In the end, as an article in Forbes (《福布斯》) said, “It’s all just pretend.” So we can’t believe everything Future You says as if it’s completely true.
3. What does Future You do first?
A. It shows users a picture of their future.
B. It collects users’ information and future plans.
C. It asks users questions about their past experiences.
4. How does the scientist like Future You in Paragraph 3?
A. Realistic. B. Boring. C. Questionable.
5. What does the underlined word “motivated” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 困惑的 B. 焦虑的 C. 有动力的
6. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A. AI: A Perfect Tool to Know your Life
B. Forbes: A New Way to See the Project
C. Future You: A New Way to See the Future
C
“Thank you for your email I’ve left to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins (企鹅) and don’t work for the school anymore. I’ll be out of the office… until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email that a Chinese student studying in the UK got from her teacher. And this email has become really popular online recently.
You might think this email is quite strange, but knitting sweaters for penguins is actually a kind thing to do. The project started because of a bad oil spill (石油泄漏) near Australia in the late 1990s. During that time, the number of baby penguins went down a lot and their health got worse too. When little penguins got covered in oil, they would try to clean themselves with their beaks (喙). But if they ate the oil, it could be very dangerous and even kill them.
To deal with this problem, the Penguin Foundation (企鹅基金会) asked people who can knit to make sweaters for the penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm while they were being cleaned and stop them from eating the oil.
This method has worked well. In 2001, another oil spill happened near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the penguins in that area were saved successfully.
However, some protection groups are worried that these sweaters might make the penguins feel more stressed in their bodies. In reply to these worries, the foundation said that the sweaters are just a short-term way to help. They won’t be used once the penguins get better.
7 How does the writer introduce the topic of the passage?
A. By showing a message. B. By introducing a teacher.
C. By presenting part of an email.
8. Why did the project of knitting sweaters for penguins start?
A. To make penguins look cute. B. To help penguins troubled by oil spills.
C. To protect penguins from climate change.
9. When did another oil spill happen near Phillip Island?
A. In 1990. B. In 1998. C. In 2001.
10. What is the attitude of some protection groups towards the sweater?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Unclear.

Do you remember the days when you had to look up words in a big, heavy dictionary on your bookshelf? Well, those days are almost over. But don’t be sad! Because we all have our own special “dictionary” that we carry with us all the time. It’s not the kind you can touch on your phone or hold in your hands. ___11___ Our mental (心理的) dictionary is a lot like a regular (常规的) dictionary. It has all kinds of information about words. Because of this, everyone’s mental dictionary is a little bit different in size. Scientists found that a 20-year-old who speaks American English usually knows about 42, 000 different words. By the time they’re 60, they might know around 48, 000 words. ___15___
Remember, the words you say and the mental dictionary you have are what make you special and different from everyone else.

B. And some people know even more!
C. But our mental dictionary is just for us.

It’s not hard to tell if the plate I’m washing belongs to my grandfather. If it’s his, there won’t be any food left on it. He grew up always making sure his plate was super clean. But my younger brother is completely different. I usually help my family wash the dishes after dinner. Whenever I wash his plate, I always find some food left on it. Anyway, I really enjoy washing the dishes because the feeling of warm water on the plates makes me feel good.
About a year ago, the dishwasher in our home broke down. So I said I would help wash the dishes by hand. At first, washing the dishes really annoyed (使恼怒) me. I was in a hurry to finish them because I had a lot of things to do. But even though it might sound a bit silly, washing the leftover food off the plates and bowls changed me. And when we finally got a new dishwasher, I still kept washing the dishes by hand after dinner.
I always start with the dinner plates. I’ve learned to turn them over and wash the bottom. Then I wash the bowls that were used. After the bowls, I wash the dishes that were used for cooking and serving.
Washing dishes by hand every day has been a lot more peaceful and has taught me things I didn’t expect. For about fifteen minutes each day, I can slow down and forget about everything else. My mind, eyes, and hands just focus on this simple job that always turns out okay. Now I can stop thinking about all my schoolwork and just enjoy doing this easy task.

This method has worked well. In 2001, another oil spill happened near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the penguins in that area were saved successfully.
However some protection groups are worried that these sweaters might make the penguins feel more stressed in their bodies. In reply to these worries, the foundation said that the sweaters are just a short-term way to help. They won’t be used once the penguins get better.

Because we all have our own special “dictionary” that we carry with us all the time. It’s not the kind you can touch on your phone or hold in your hands. ___11___ Our mental (心理的) dictionary is a lot like a regular (常规的) dictionary. It has all kinds of information about words. It knows what letters are in a word, how to say it, and what it means. It knows if a word is a noun (名词), a verb (动词), or something else.___12___ A regular dictionary is good for everyone to learn the same words and meanings. ___13___ It’s made up of all the things we’ve learned and experienced in our lives.

By the time they’re 60, they might know around 48, 000 words. ___15___
Remember, the words you say and the mental dictionary you have are what make you special and different from everyone else.
