Want to read a perfect children’s book? Explore some recommendations from trusted critics.
My Brother Is Away (Sara Greenwood, illustrated by Luisa Uribe)
It’s never easy to explain that a family member is kept in prison, and it can be especially hard for children. This touching book draws on the author’s own childhood to tell the story of a young girl whose brother is in prison. What does she say to her friends who have seen him on the news? And will he still love her? A gentle and hopeful story for kids about very adult situations and complex feelings. (For ages 5 to 8)
Eyes that Kiss in the Corners (Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho)
This book is brilliantly written because it focuses both on how the characters’ eyes look and on how they see. Focusing on a young girl who takes pride in her “eyes that kiss in the corner and glow like warm tea”, Joanna Ho’s lyrical intergenerational story combines with Dung Ho’s warm and often magical imagery to bring us a celebration on how we see the world — and how we see ourselves. (For ages 4 to 8)
Rez Dogs (Joseph Bruchac)
When COVID-19 hits, Malian is visiting her grandparents. It is in Malian’s grandparents’ stories that she learns how the people of her native community have always taken care of one another. Written in poetry, this book shows us the pandemic through a child’s eyes and helps remind us that responsibility and caring for one another is something we all can do. (For ages 8 to 12)
Listen to the Language of the Trees (Tera Kelly, illustrated by Marie Hermansson)
If you know about the “Wood Wide Web”, you know that trees communicate through the fungi that connect their roots. Still, did you know how they support one another with extra food? How they can tell their offspring (后代) apart from other trees? How they can warn other trees when insects attack? Then, consider this outstanding book for kids on the topic. (For ages 4 to 8)

I’m Vasco Salazar, a thirteen-year-old living in a coastal town in Portugal, where many make their living from fishing. My father, Paulo, is a fisherman, as were generations before him. Fishing is in my blood. I often wonder about my future: will I become a fisherman like my father, or will I pursue my dream of studying at university? I already help with the nets and catch, and my cousin Alfonso, who is nineteen, shares thrilling ocean adventure tales. My parents say he makes these stories more exciting to impress and encourage me to follow in his footsteps.
Fishing is hard and dangerous work, they warn. You spend your days wet, salty, and smelling of fish. “Explore different possibilities before deciding your path,” my father advises. “You were named after Vasco da Gama, the explorer who made Portugal a sea-trading power. Seek your own path.” Last week, as we waited for the fishing boats to return after a week at sea, the weather was calm and clear. When my father’s boat arrived, Alfonso and I pulled in the nets, heavy with a week’s worth of fish. Later, I helped my mother prepare a fish soup for dinner.
The following day, my father sent me to ask Carlos, the lighthouse keeper, about the weather. From his high viewpoint, Carlos has a keen understanding of the weather and life. He greeted me warmly, eager for company. “I want to be a fisherman,” I told Carlos, “but I also love learning. Maybe I’d be good at teaching or something else.” Carlos gestured broadly to the horizon. “It’s a big world with many opportunities. If you choose fishing now, you might limit yourself and miss out on education. Explore your options. Fishing will always be here.” We fell silent, and I asked about the weather. “When you can see the westernmost islands from here,” Carlos explained, “rain is coming.” Sure enough, fat raindrops soon began to fall.
After the storm, we searched the beach for washed-up treasures. Among the seaweed and debris, I found a chain with a compass. “Look!” Alfonso shouted. “A compass! Now Vasco can explore the world.” In that moment, I realized Carlos was right. I could always return to fishing, but the world was waiting for me to explore.
41.What does Vasco mean when he says fishing is in his blood?
A.He enjoys eating fish. B.He has natural talent for fishing.
C.Fishing is his family tradition. D.He spends a lot of time near water.
42.Why does Alfonso share thrilling ocean adventure tales with Vasco?
A.To inspire Vasco to become a fisherman. B.To convince Vasco to study at university.
C.To entertain Vasco with fictional stories. D.To teach Vasco about the ocean.
43.Why does Vasco’s father tell him he was named after Vasco da Gama?
A.To make fun of his first name.
B.To persuade him to explore his own future.
C.To help him feel more important than Alfonso.
D.To teach him a lesson in the history of Portugal.
44.Which is most likely to happen in the future?
A.Carlos will warn Vasco about the dangers of the sea.
B.Alfonso will quit fishing and become a lighthouse keeper.
C.Vasco’s family will leave Portugal.
D.Vasco will go to the university.
45.Which of these is the main conflict in this story?
A.Familiar against unfamiliar. B.Man against nature.
C.Old against young. D.Good against bad.

Do you think artificial intelligence (AI) should be banned in schools? To improve the new development of education, experts and officials believe that generative AI tools should be safely and appropriately applied in schools rather than being banned.
Zheng Qinghua, president of Tongji University, emphasized the importance of taking the opportunities and meeting challenges presented by AI-empowered education. He suggested that young people should be guided to improve their understanding of the knowledge created by technology. Meanwhile, their motivation for learning should also be encouraged.
AI technology has become increasingly important for getting and spreading knowledge, impacting teaching, learning, and school management. Zheng emphasized the widespread use of various models such as Emie Bot, an AI chatbot product developed by Baidu, among college students in China. The tool can write essays, solve science problems, and help students with assignments and tests.
Furthermore, a survey conducted by the online learning platform Study showed that 89 percent of students had used ChatGPT for homework assistance, raising concerns about academic honesty. Instead of merely relying on AI to provide answers or complete homework and tests, people should focus on using AI to develop students’ innovation and integrate professional skills, enabling them to solve real-world problems, said Zheng.
According to Colin Bailey, president of Queen Mary University of London, as ChatGPT grows rapidly, the focus should not be on whether to use AI in education, but on how to use it safely, effectively, and appropriately. Banning AI in schools is not the solution, Bailey concluded. Bailey also warned about the potential harm caused by poorly designed AI.
Efforts to regulate (监管) AI have come out around the world, such as the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights in the US and a pro-innovation approach to AI regulation in the UK. In China, measures for managing generative AI services have been carried out. Chen Jie, vice-minister of education, emphasized the need for cooperation among education and research institutions to address AI-related issues like privacy leaks and bias.
46.What is Zheng Qinghua’s attitude towards using AI in education?
A.Supportive. B.Opposed. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
47.What is the primary concern raised by the survey conducted by Study?
A.The privacy leaks of using AI tools.
B.Dishonest behavior in the students’ homework.
C.The students’ reliance on AI tools to learn.
D.The students’ preference for AI chatbots to human teachers.
48.What is Colin Bailey’s suggestion on AI tools in schools?
A.Prohibiting them due to academic issues.
B.Protecting them from the potential harm.
C.Applying them in a proper and efficient way.
D.Using them without restrictions.
49.The underlined word “address” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ______.
A.Tackle B.React C.Wipe D.Mount
50.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The unique approach of China in regulating AI.
B.The global agreement on the ban of AI in education.
C.The worldwide efforts to establish regulations on AI services.
D.The international cooperation in addressing AI-related issues.

During the 2025 Spring Festival movie season, an extraordinary event occurred: Ne Zha 2 became a massive hit in Chinese cinemas. By February 3rd, its box office earnings had surpassed 4 billion yuan (about $550 million), breaking previous records. This animated sequel quickly gained popularity, even outperforming famous films like YOLO(热辣滚烫) and The Wandering Earth 2 (流浪地球2). Guo Fan, director of The Wandering Earth 2, shared an exciting poster online to celebrate this achievement, which also highlighted the rapid growth of China’s animation industry.
The film’s success changed how cinemas operated across the country. To meet the huge demand, theaters introduced 1, 000-seat screening halls for the first time, with some scheduling nearly 100 shows daily. Tickets sold out rapidly both online and at ticket counters. Meanwhile, related merchandise sparked a shopping craze. Items featuring characters like Shen Gongbao (申公豹) and Shi Ji Niangniang (石矶娘娘) flew off shelves. Limited-edition blind boxes disappeared within hours, and crowdfunding for collectible figures raised ten times the expected amount, proving fans’ love for the film.
Rooted in Chinese mythology, Ne Zha 2retells ancient stories with a modern twist. Magical realms, legendary weapons, and iconic figures like Ao Bing (敖丙) are woven into a story that deeply resonates with young audiences. The film’s central theme— “fighting against fate”—strikes a chord with teenagers facing pressures in school, family, or society. As one college student said after watching the film, “It’s not just about gods and demons. It’s about how weshould fight for our own future.”
The film also explores new relationships between characters. Ne Zha and Ao Bing, once enemies, now balance competition with friendship. Visually, Ne Zha 2 sets a new standard for Chinese animation with over 1, 900 carefully designed special effects shots. Scenes like flaming lotus flowers clashing with water dragons leave audiences amazed, showing that Chinese animation can compete with global giants like Disney or Studio Ghibli.
Beyond box office success, Ne Zha 2bridges ancient culture and modern creativity. By mixing cultural pride with advanced technology, it inspires a new generation to value tradition while embracing innovation. The rebellious spirit of Ne Zha—a “little devil” challenging old rules—not only entertains but encourages young people to think critically and pursue their dreams.

Florence Chia-ying Yeh, also known as Ye Jiaying, was a well-known expert in Chinese classical literature. On Nov 24, she passed away in Tianjin at the age of 100.
Yeh learned classical poetry and English from a young age. In college, she focused on poetry from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. After graduating, she taught at several universities in China and abroad.

Even in her 90s, Yeh continued teaching to share Chinese poetry with as many people as possible. At the age of 92, she chose 218 ancient poems for children and recorded videos of her interpretations (解读) and readings the following year.

Yeh learned classical poetry and English from a young age. In college, she focused on poetry from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. After graduating, she taught at several universities in China and abroad.
Yeh faced many struggles in her life. She lost her mother at the age of 17 and her eldest daughter passed away when Yeh was in middle age. “The study of poetry is not a goal that I pursue (追求), but a strength that supports me through difficulties,” she wrote at age 87.
