Not long ago, video clips of Zhang Jianna directing foreigners have gone viral online. Her fluent English and confident behavior have deeply impressed the viewers.
The 49-year-old Zhang is a migrant worker from a rural village in Hebei province. With only a high school diploma, she had previously worked as a restaurant server. In 2012, she took on the role of a sanitation worker in the embassy area of Sanlitun in Beijing’s Chaoyang district.
One morning, a foreigner approached her, gently tapped her shoulder, and spoke a long string of unfamiliar words to her. Standing there, her mind going bewildered and blank, Zhang didn’t know how to react. The special experience profoundly moved Zhang, making up her mind to learn English.
“My goal is quite simple. I just want to help whenever someone is in need, whether it’s asking for directions, inquiring about visa procedures, or telling them about the embassy area I am responsible for,” said Zhang.
At the age of 40, without a tutor, she began learning English from her children’s textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases commonly used for giving directions. With no fixed study hours, she utilized every spare moment. While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would note down new knowledge points and review them until thoroughly understood. Over the years, she filled over a dozen notebooks with her notes.
“Learning English at an older age, I would easily forget the words I learned the previous day, which is the biggest challenge,” Zhang said. However, she persisted, reviewing words at night and then repeating them one more time the next day morning.
To date, she has accumulated a vocabulary of around 3,000 English words, enabling her to converse fluently with foreigners. “Growing up in a rural area without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel incredibly accomplished,” said she.
24.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Zhang got a university diploma.

Governments around the world are increasingly worried about the effect of using the Internet on young people’s mental health. And studies have shown that spending too much time on screens and social media may increase feelings of anxiety and sadness. However, according to a new study, for older adults, properly using the Internet might bring many benefits and should perhaps be encouraged.
Researchers from Hong Kong investigated the effects of using the Internet on the mental health of adults aged over 50. Data from more than 87,500 people in 23 countries was used in the study. The study found that using the Internet was connected with fewer symptoms (症状) of sadness or depression (抑郁), greater life satisfaction, and ameliorated self-reported health.
When researchers looked at the data from people in the US, England, and China in a little more detail, they discovered that the increased use of the Internet was connected with better mental health. Interestingly, they found that certain groups of older adults benefited more from the use of the Internet than others. For example, older adults who did fewer social activities or took part in less physical exercise experienced greater positive effects. Similarly, people with disabilities and those with higher education levels also got stronger benefits. The positive effects were stronger among people who used the Internet every day.
The researchers stressed that the Internet can be an excellent place for older adults to learn new things, connect with others, and access important services and information. They described the Internet as a cheap and effective way to improve older adults’ mental health, especially those who live outside towns and cities.
For these individuals, the Internet can make it easier to access resources and social opportunities that may be difficult to reach. This shows that the Internet is not only a tool for communication but also a valuable resource for supporting mental well-being among older populations.
28.How does overusing the Internet affect young people’s mental health?
A.It damages their physical condition. B.It brings them happiness and benefits.
C.It makes them feel worried and unhappy. D.It helps them stay connected with others.
29.What does the underlined word “ameliorated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Proved. B.Improved. C.Cured. D.Affected.
30.What did researchers find from the study?
A.More older adults surfed online than younger ones.
B.Many countries encouraged people to use computers.
C.Using the Internet promoted all people’s physical health.
D.Using the Internet is good for some groups of older adults.
31.How does the Internet benefit older adults in rural areas?
A.It helps them save money. B.It keeps them physically active.
C.It improves their mental health. D.It allows them to travel more easily.

根据第三段“Interestingly, they found that certain groups of older adults benefited more from the use of the Internet than others. For example, older adults who did fewer social activities or took part in less physical exercise experienced greater positive effects.(有趣的是,他们发现某些老年人群体比其他人从使用互联网中受益更多。例如,较少参加社会活动或较少参加体育锻炼的老年人体验到更大的积极影响)”可知,研究人员从这项研究中发现使用互联网对某些老年人群体有好处。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The researchers stressed that the Internet can be an excellent place for older adults to learn new things, connect with others, and access important services and information. They described the Internet as a cheap and effective way to improve older adults’ mental health, especially those who live outside towns and cities.(研究人员强调,互联网可以成为老年人学习新事物、与他人联系、获取重要服务和信息的绝佳场所。他们认为,互联网是改善老年人心理健康的一种廉价而有效的方式,尤其是那些居住在城镇以外的老年人)”可知,互联网改善老年人的心理健康,使农村地区的老年人受益。故选C。

In Chinese literature, there might be no other characters more rebellious than the Monkey King Sun Wukong from Journey to the West and Nezha from Investiture of Gods. With magical power, they defied the hierarchy, fighting against unjust destinies. That’s why the two are so popular with Chinese people, writers, artists and, in particular, filmmakers.
Ne Zha 2, an animated movie by director Yang Yu, the sequel to Ne Zha (2019), has been shown overseas in countries, including Australia, New Zealand and the United States, and will show in others such as Japan, Singapore and South Korea. Opening on Jan 29, the start of the Spring Festival holiday, it made Chinese box office history, with earnings surpassing 10 billion yuan ($1.37 billion) by Thursday, topping China’s all-time best-selling movies list. It also makes Ne Zha 2 among the top 20 highest-grossing films in global cinematic history.
Despite their similar determination to resist, compared to the Monkey King, the story of Nezha in Chinese mythology is more tragic in tone. His identity as the child of mortals has given people more space to adapt his story to different eras especially after the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), though its rebellious core has never changed.
It is said that the mythology surrounding Nezha spread across China in the wake of the arrival of Buddhism.
In Buddhist works, Nezha often appears together with his father, carrying a magical miniature pagoda. His duty is to help him guard the Dharma, ward off evil spirits, and protect people. As Dharma protectors and Yaksha deities typically have fierce visages, symbolizing their resolution against malevolence, Nezha was often portrayed with a formidable and wrathful countenance.
Buddhist texts about Nezha’s unusual relationship with his parents are missing. Researchers found in the retellings and discussions of existing early materials from the Song Dynasty (960-1279) that Nezha once dissected his own body and returned his flesh to his mother and his bones to his father.
As Buddhism continued to spread, ancient China absorbed and adapted the religion, and folk beliefs evolved. Nezha’s portrayal gradually departed from its Buddhist origins and took on a more distinctly Chinese character.
From a fierce Yaksha god to a Chinese deity, this change opened up space for development of Nezha’s image with colorful interpretations of stories in the following centuries. Nezha has gradually become a classic literary character in China, blending elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
32.What is the main reason for the popularity of Sun Wukong and Nezha in Chinese culture?
A.Their magical powers B.Their defiance of unjust destinies
C.Their tragic stories D.Their roles in Buddhist texts
33.According to the passage, what is a significant achievement of the movie Ne Zha 2?
A.It became the highest-grossing film in global cinematic history.
B.It earned over 10 billion yuan, topping China’s all-time best-selling movies list.
C.It was the first Chinese animated movie to be shown overseas.
D.It introduced Nezha to Western audiences for the first time.
34.How is Nezha’s story different from the Monkey King’s in Chinese mythology?
A.Nezha’s story is more tragic in tone.
B.Nezha’s story lacks a rebellious core.
C.Nezha’s story is less adaptable to different eras.
D.Nezha’s story is not influenced by Buddhism.
35.What does the passage suggest about Nezha’s portrayal over time?
A.It remained consistent with its Buddhist origins.
B.It became more aligned with Taoist beliefs.
C.It evolved into a distinctly Chinese character.
D.It lost its connection to folk beliefs.

33.细节理解题。由文章第二段中“Opening on Jan 29, the start of the Spring Festival holiday, it made Chinese box office history, with earnings surpassing 10 billion yuan ($1.37 billion) by Thursday, topping China’s all-time best-selling movies list. There were usually about 30 signs, and I could only 45 a few Chinese characters of the dishes each time. If I could 46 in time, I could have asked a Chinese classmate to help translate some of the names of the available dishes for me, and I could have taken the 47 to make new friends who may help me gain more understanding of Chinese culture.
Things changed when I had to 48 how to fix the clogged (堵塞) toilet in my apartment. But what worried me was that I couldn't explain the problem to the repair team over the 49 . Instead of calling the team, I went down and tried to talk to the man watching the building's entrance, I explained the problem in my 50 , then mimed (用哑剧动作表现) a toilet bowl. It turned out that I was a 51 mime performer, so I took out my phone to translate my words. Eventually, the person helped call the repairman and fixed my toilet.
Having 52 a lot, I have realized that just because some features of the culture were different from what I was used to didn't mean they were 53 . There are no shared languages in the world. But people 54 cultures can communicate with each other if you put in some efforts. And most people will help you with their 55 as long as you are respectful and patient.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was spring in 2018. The whole school was bathed in beautiful sunshine when Kelly Mattison, an English teacher in J.K.F High School, suddenly saw Dylan Belscher anxiously walking up and down, his right hand in his pocket. It was nothing like the everyday Belscher she had come to know. Mrs Mattison wondered if something had happened.
Belscher was an average student, but not an average person. Generally, his smile would spread across the classroom. From a young age, he had started working part-time to help support his family. He had struggled to grow up, and although he was a tough boy, he was also positive and generous. He was always willing to help and was popular among his classmates. Recently, however, he had changed. He now worked longer hours, trying to earn more money. It seemed every dollar, even every cent, meant a lot to him.
That morning, when Belscher noticed a dollar on the floor, excitement and opportunity took hold of him. Looking around to make sure no one was looking, he quickly bent down, picked up the dollar and put it into his pocket. However, immediately after putting the dollar in his pocket, Belscher began to feel uneasy. As the day progressed, he began to feel worse and he couldn’t even concentrate during class. The one dollar bill felt like a fire burning in his pocket. He kept thinking about Mrs Mattison, who always taped (粘贴) lost items on the whiteboard and asked students to do the same.
He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear his deskmate call his name.
“Are you OK, Belscher?” His deskmate, Megan Rose, asked.
“Sure...” Belscher paused, unable to complete the sentence. His heart began to race and his mind went blank. “Why...why are...you...asking?”
Rose was curious. “Your face is so red!” she whispered.
The whisper exploded like a bomb, and Belscher felt as if the whole world was watching him and could see inside his pocket. Belscher was so overcome with embarrassment and guilt that he rushed out of the classroom. Even the bright spring sunshine wasn’t strong enough to wash away his shame.
Paragraph 1: Just then, Mrs Mattison approached, “What’s up, Belscher?”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The next day, moved by what she had heard, Mrs Mattison posted the story on her blog.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Just then, Mrs Mattison approached, “What’s up, Belscher?” Belscher hesitated for a moment before he admitted, “I misbehaved and kept a dollar I picked up. I am sorry.” He couldn’t hold back his tears. Mrs Mattison listened attentively and then she smiled warmly. “That’s OK, my boy. But why?” Belscher told her what had happened. His family was not rich and, to make things worse, his mother had fallen seriously ill. “I needed money, and even a dollar means a lot,” Belscher said. Mrs Mattison listened in silence. Patting Belscher on the back, she said gently, “Everything will be OK, dear!”
The next day, moved by what she had heard, Mrs Mattison posted the story on her blog. Rose was the first to spot it and the whole class was willing to help Belscher. More social media users began responding, offering their support in various ways. With more concern and help pouring in, Belscher’s mother started to gradually recover and the shining smile gradually returned to his face. As the beautiful spring sunshine kissed every lovely face around him, Belscher realized that the love of others was his constant companion and that his honesty had encouraged many acts of kindness.

B.Zhang gets a position as a sanitation worker.
C.Zhang used to communicate with the foreigners.
D.Zhang wants to be an English tutor for her children.
25.What’s the main factor that motivated Zhang to learn English?
A.The curiosity for a language. B.A desire to promote her income.
C.A skill required by her leader. D.A special encounter with a foreigner.
26.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “utilize” in Paragraph 5?
A.Made use of. B.Set aside. C.Figured out. D.Abused.
27.Which of the following can best describe Zhang?
A.Hard-working and creative. B.Forgetful and brave.
C.Persevering and determined. D.Optimistic and ambitious.

D

Paragraph 2: The next day, moved by what she had heard, Mrs Mattison posted the story on her blog.
