The speaker will tell us about their jobs. These talks will take place outside school hours. I have arranged two talks so far. The first will be by a woman called Ellie Brown. She will be speaking on the second of November. Ellie’s done lots of interesting jobs, including being a teacher. She now works as a travel writer. She is going to tell us about her schooling and about some of the travels she offered to talk about Brazil or Thailand, but we finally agreed that she’d tell us about her most recent trip, which was to Australia. She has got lots of great photos to show you. The second talk by a man named Harry Fowler is not actually going to be on Tuesday, the seventh of December, but on the next day, the eighth. Harry works as a camera operator and has a lot of experience making documentaries. He’s going to tell us about filming wildlife shows. If any of you are keen to know more about his work, you can buy his book Behind the Lens after his talk. Wild Places for Outdoor Adventures in Canada
Best for geological wonders: Gros Morne
Despite being home to landscapes so breathtaking, Newfoundland and Labrador remains one of Canada’s most overlooked provinces. Taking pride of place on its west coast is UNESCO-listed Gros Morne National Park. The park’s calling card is an ancient treasure — the Tablelands, a plateau pushed up by tectonic (地壳的) plate shifts and one of only a few places in the world you can walk on the earth’s mantle (地幔).
Best for soft adventure: Thousand Islands
One of Canada’s smallest national parks, Ontario’s Thousand Islands is located in a region of the same name, and made up of 21 islands and numerous smaller islands in the St. Lawrence River. Formed from the worn-down peaks of ancient mountains, much of it is open for camping — a popular, family-friendly option here.
Best for a national park pilgrimage: Banff
Canada’s first national park, Banff sits in the palm of the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains and has drawn travellers to its natural hot springs since it first opened in 1885. Those mineral baths also inspired the construction of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a 135-year-old, Scottish baronial-style castle. The action here centres around the skiing town of Banff, but the mountains are home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears.
Best for wildlife: Jasper
Banff’s northern, lesser-visited neighbour. Jasper, is double its size and the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. A hiker’s region of wild peaks, it’s hard not to bump into wildlife here. Elk, big horn sheep, and wolves are abundant. Time your visit for spring or autumn when wildlife-watching is at its peak. Non-hikers can enjoy cable-rides for valley views and star-gazing at night — Jasper is the second-largest Dark Sky Preserve, in the world.
21.What makes Gros Morne National Park attractive geologically?
A.The availability of camping. B.The Tablelands, an ancient plateau.
C.The presence of natural hot springs. D.Its location in Newfoundland and Labrador.
22.Where can you find a family-friendly camping option in Ontario?
A.In Banff National Park. B.In Jasper National Park.
C.In Thousand Islands Park. D.In Gros Morne National Park.
23.What do Banff and Jasper have in common?
A.Their hot season is spring. B.Their hot springs attract tourists.
C.They have a history of over 100 years. D.A wide range of wildlife can be found there.

The father of an 8-year-old boy says his son is now the youngest person to climb California’ s El Capitan. After four days of guided climbing, Joe Baker and his son Sam reached the top of the cliff (悬崖) face inside Yosemite National Park last week.
“We made it!” Joe said. “What an amazing week! I’m so proud of Sam. He completed the youngest rope climbing of El Capitan! In a few years he might be back breaking more records.”
Rock climbing has been a favorite pastime for the Baker family. Though Sam’s mother didn’t join the climbing, she is also a crazy climber. The family set up a website to record Sam’s adventures and collect money to make films that inspire parents to adventure with their kids. Sam began training at least 18 months ago and did well in a test run. They began the climbing on October 25 and reached the top on 28. They made the journey with the help of two guides.
But their achievement has not been without controversy (争议): as the climbing made headlines around the world, some members of the Yosemite climbing community began to say publicly that what the pair had done was not actually called climbing. The Bakers used a technique known as “jugging” which needs using handheld devices to slide up a fixed rope that’s been placed by a guide, without touching the rock face.
Reaching the top can not be so simple. The climbing takes many days, which means carrying up all necessary food, water and other heavy equipment. It also involves setting up and sleeping on a small platform that’s suspended (悬) thousands of feet in the air. The rock face is very exposed, a term (术语) used to describe a place that’s steep (陡峭的) and unprotected.
24.What do we know about Sam from the first two paragraphs?
A.He is the best climber in California.
B.He has been trained by his father.
C.He is the youngest climber reaching the top of El Capitan.
D.He is planning another mountain climbing with his father.
25.Why did the Bakers found a website?
A.To record their happy life.
B.To encourage families to experience adventures.
C.To show off Sam’s climbing experience.
D.To advise parents to climb El Capitan with their kids.
26.What’s some members’ attitude to the achievement of Joe and Sam in paragraph 4?
A.Supportive. B.Impressive. C.Unconcerned. D.Doubtful.
27.What can we learn about the climbing from the last paragraph?
A.It is challenging and fun. B.It needs some courage.
C.It requires high-tech equipment. D.It affects most climbers’ sleep.
根据第一段中“The father of an 8 year old boy says his son is now the youngest person to climb California’s El Capitan. (一位8岁男孩的父亲称,他的儿子现在是攀登加州酋长岩最年轻的人)”可知,Sam是攀登上酋长岩顶部年龄最小的攀登者。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The family set up a website to record Sam’s adventures and collect money to make films that inspire parents to adventure with their kids. (这家人建立了一个网站来记录Sam的冒险经历,并筹集资金制作电影,激励父母和孩子一起冒险)”可知,Baker一家建立网站是为了筹集资金制作电影,以鼓励家庭去体验冒险。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段中“But their achievement has not been without controversy (争议): as the climbing made headlines around the world, some members of the Yosemite climbing community began to say publicly that what the pair had done was not actually called climbing. (但他们的成就并非没有争议:当这次攀登成为世界各地的头条新闻时,约塞米蒂攀岩社区的一些成员开始公开表示,这对父子的行为实际上不能称之为攀岩)”可知,一些成员对Joe和Sam的成就持怀疑态度。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Reaching the top can not be so simple. The climbing takes many days, which means carrying up all necessary food, water and other heavy equipment. It also involves setting up and sleeping on a small platform that’s suspended (悬) thousands of feet in the air. The rock face is very exposed, a term (术语) used to describe a place that’s steep (陡峭的) and unprotected.(到达山顶并非易事。攀登需要很多天,这意味着要携带所有必要的食物、水和其他沉重的装备。还包括在数千英尺高空中的一个小平台上搭建并睡觉。岩壁“无保护”,这是一个用来描述一个陡峭且没有防护的地方的术语)”可知,攀登酋长岩并非易事,要面临诸多困难,由此推知,攀登酋长岩需要勇气。故选B项。

Every year, the release of new phones brings consumers to the market looking to upgrade their phones to the next best thing. However, the problem of electronic waste, or e-waste, isn’t so well-known despite the threat it poses to the environment. E-waste is the term used for electronics that have been thrown away. Although buying the latest device may initially be a good decision, in the long run, the constant purchase of electronics will affect the health of our planet.
E-waste is common in the U. S., as landfills (垃圾填埋场) are filled with old electronics. According to an EPA report, materials in these landfills account for 70 percent of dangerous materials. In the commercial district Agbogbloshie, Ghana, most electronic waste is burned or thrown in acid, seriously damaging the environment with poisonous emissions in the air.
At the individual level, there are solutions that help reduce the amount of e-waste. The next time something goes wrong with your smart phone or you think your phone is too old, consider checkıng if it can be overhauled instead of buying a new one. Additionally, before throwing away your old device, donate it to schools, charities or non-profit organizations that can find a use for the product.
Teaching students about e-waste in schools is a way for the community to bring greater attention to the issue. E-waste relates to many different careers, and the future generation can learn early about the harm of e-waste and how it should be regarded in each field. There are also many resources online, including lesson plans, for teachers to use when they educate students about the topic.
As the effects of climate change grow more and more serious, it’s our responsibility to help the planet and prevent issues such as e-waste. As the 5G revolution begins, it’s important to remember to recycle old smart phones and understand that a difference can be made at the individual level.
28.What is the author’s main concern in the text?
A.New technology is hard to apply. B.The problem of e-waste is ignored.
C.People refuse to upgrade their phones. D.Few people care about the environment.
29.Why does the author mention Ghana in Paragraph 2?
A.To warn of harmful emissions. B.To explain the waste of resources.
C.To show the seriousness of e-waste. D.To show the wide use of landfills.
30.What does the underlined word “overhauled” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Restored. B.Replaced. C.Cleaned. D.Suspended
31.What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A.The prospects of future e-waste. B.The responsibility of communities.
C.Online resources on reducing e-waste D.The education of students about e-waste.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.D

由文章第二段“E-waste is common in the U.
由文章第三段中“At the individual level, there are solutions that help reduce the amount of e-waste. The next time something goes wrong with your smart phone or you think your phone is too old, consider checkıng if it can be overhauled instead of buying a new one. (在个人层面,有一些解决方案有助于减少电子垃圾的数量。下次当你的智能手机出现故障,或者你觉得手机太旧了,考虑检查一下它是否可以overhauled,而不是购买新手机。)”可知,个人层面减少电子垃圾的数量,考虑检查一下它是否可以修理,而不是买新的,所以overhauled意思是“修复”。与Restored“修复”意思相符。故选A。
由文章第四段“Teaching students about e-waste in schools is a way for the community to bring greater attention to the issue. E-waste relates to many different careers, and the future generation can learn early about the harm of e-waste and how it should be regarded in each field. There are also many resources online, including lesson plans, for teachers to use when they educate students about the topic.

When a new trend (趋势) swept through school, every kid wanted in. The latest must-have item? Superhero-style jerseys (球衣), decorated with bright colors and the logos of everyone’s favorite heroes. They were cool and expensive. Almost everyone pre-ordered one, except Dylan.
Dylan lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Hargrove, in a small house. Money was tight, but they made do. When Dylan saw the jerseys at school, he couldn’t help but want one. Mrs. Hargrove looked at the price tag online and said gently, “I’m afraid we can’t afford one right now.” Dylan’s face fell, but he forced a smile, “That’s okay, Grandma. I understand.”
But Mrs. Hargrove couldn’t bear to see him disappointed. That night, after Dylan had gone to bed, she sat down with her knitting needles (针) and a plan. She stayed up all night and made a homemade jersey with all the love she had. By morning, she was tired but satisfied, holding the finished product with a smile.
At breakfast, she presented the jersey to Dylan. Dylan’s heart sank when he saw the jersey. It was a bright, hand-knitted sweater with a superhero picture that wasn’t exactly perfect. But he saw the look in his grandmother’s eyes and knew he couldn’t hurt her feelings. “Thanks, Grandma,” he said, forcing enthusiasm into his voice. “It’s great.”
On Monday, Dylan put on the homemade jersey and went to school. As soon as he entered the classroom, some kids started to laugh at him. Dylan tried to ignore them, but the comments kept coming. By lunchtime, he couldn’t take it anymore and ran home, tears streaming down his face. Mrs. Hargrove held him close, her heart broken for him.
Meanwhile, Mr. Pickford, Dylan’s beloved teacher, heard about what had happened. He was known for his kindness and his special ability of turning bad situations around.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mr. Pickford decided to take action. He organized a special class activity called “The Value Behind Clothes”. In the class, he asked each student to share the story behind a special piece of clothing they owned. Some talked about the dresses their mothers made for their birthdays, while others shared the significance of the worn-out items passed down from their grandparents. Mr. Pickford then asked Dylan to come to the front and show his jersey. In a trembling voice, Dylan told the whole class how his grandma had stayed up all night to make this jersey for him because they couldn’t afford the expensive store-bought ones. His words touched the hearts of his classmates, and many of them hung their heads in shame for their earlier behavior.
After the class, the students’ attitudes changed completely. They started to appreciate the effort and love put into every piece of clothing, no matter how it looked. Some students even asked Mrs. Hargrove to teach them how to knit. The next week, a “Handmade Clothes Day” was organized in the school. All the students wore their self-made or family-made clothes with pride. Dylan’s jersey became the most special one among them. From then on, instead of being laughed at, Dylan was admired for having such a loving grandmother and the unique jersey filled with love. The school atmosphere became warmer, and everyone learned the true meaning of kindness and respect.
