Can plants grow on the moon? Here’s the good news. Scientists at the University of Florida have grown plants in soil from the moon.
The moon soil was collected by NASA’s astronauts over 50 years ago. The soil is so valuable that it took the scientists 11 years to get NASA’s agreement to use it. NASA didn’t give them much soil—just 12g. Some of the soil was taken from the top layer (层) of the moon’s surface, and the rest came from deeper layers. The moon soil doesn’t have many nutrients—things that help plants grow. It has a large amount of iron, and is full of tiny pieces of glass.
For their scientific test, the scientists chose a plant called thale cress, which can grow in very little soil. They got the moon soil wet with water mixed with nutrients. Then they added the seeds. To compare, they also planted the seeds in volcanic ash (火山灰).
After two days of watering, the scientists saw green plants in every soil layer. “All of the seeds grew. I can’t tell you how surprised we were!” said one of the scientists. As time went on, the scientists began to notice differences. The plants grown in the moon soil weren’t as healthy as those grown in volcanic ash. They were smaller and grew more slowly, and some leaves turned red. The plants grown in the top layer moon soil did the worst of all.
Anyway, showing that plants can grow on the moon is a really good starting point. It is the first step toward growing plants for food and O₂on the moon one day. By studying changes in the DNA of the plants grown in the moon soil, scientists may find new ways to help plants grow better on the moon. It is actually a huge step in achieving humans’ long-time dream of living on the moon.
44. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. The astronauts collected the moon soil 11 years ago.
B. It was difficult for the scientists to get the moon soil.
C. NASA gave most of the moon soil to the scientists.
D. Many nutrients can be found in the soil from the moon.
45. Why did the scientists choose thale cress?
A. It is a common plant. B. It can live for a long time.
C. It can grow without water. D. It doesn’t need too much soil.
46. How was the growth of the plants (from good to poor)?
a. the plants grown in volcanic ash
b. the plants grown in the top layer moon soil
c. the plants grown in the deeper layer moon soil
A. c>a>b. B. a>b>c. C. a>c>b. D.b>a>c.
47. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The value of the results of the scientific test.
B. Humans’ dream of living on the moon.
C. New ways to help plants grow better on the moon.
D. Changes in the DNA of the plants grown in the moon soil.

Probably you grew up with a stop-snacking mom. That is a mom who tells her kids that snacks are bad. They will make you fat and hurt your teeth.
Well, Mom may be right about most things. 56 There is actually an acceptable way to snack for better health. The following tips help you to snack the right way.
Make your own snacks.
57 Most of those snacks have too much sugar and salt in them. Instead, fresh home-made snacks may be a healthier choice. The right snacks can keep you from eating too much at dinner and keep you from getting fat.
Eat things that offer you enough energy.
Things like bread and crackers are processed (消化) quickly by your body. 58 If you are truly a big fan of bread, how about having some cheese to go along with it, and you’ll get a winning snack.
Be careful of your hunger signals.
59 But you might not really be hungry at all. Your body might just be telling you to take a rest. Have some water before you pull out a snack. That might be all you really need.
With one or two snack breaks during the day, you will probably find that you eat less at lunch and dinner. And eating less is a great way to start losing weight. Sorry about that, Mom. 60
A. It is easy to mistake being tired for being hungry.
B. Therefore, it’s wise to stay away from snacks.
C. They won’t give you enough energy to last very long.

六 、读写综合。
(一)阅读并回答问题。
You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard (胡须) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman sits on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote (纸币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang died at the age of 94 on Feb 1, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit of Lijiang River—being positive and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example on the back of the 5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.

In South Korea, most children have skiing during the winter holiday. In the summer holiday, some students go on a short trip inside the country. Many schools hold activities to make holidays colourful, such as holding a volunteering activity to the countryside.
In Japan, during holidays, some school children spend their time in school clubs. There are many clubs, like tennis, basketball, art and dancing clubs. Other children may go to theme parks with their friends or have a short trip with their families.
