Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked,
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words. Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone. Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

(2024·江苏镇江·中考真题)“Take a seat, kids!” Miss King announced. As kids ran towards the campfire, Miss King turned to Quill, “I’ll leave for a while, just bring the kids watermelons and tell them a story.” “Sure.” said Quill, his hands becoming wet. Quill was good at showing kids how to climb rocks, but he was not a good storyteller.
Quill asked in a low voice, “What kind of story do you like?” A boy named Caden answered, “A ghost story!” Alice rolled her eyes and other kids also shouted, “Quill will tell a lovely story, Caden.” “A ghost story!” Caden insisted. Just then, Quill felt a pull from Emma, the quietest in the group, “I’m afraid of ghost stories.”
“What am I going to tell?” Quill thought and then said slowly, “I’m going to tell…a…a toast story.” Caden protested. “A toast story? I want a ghost story!” “You’ll see,” Quill said, “Long long ago, there was a piece of bread... named Bob.” Some kids smiled. Quill talked faster, “One day, Bob was put onto a wooden platform. Bob started crying.” “Bread can’t cry!” Caden shouted. Quill’s ears turned red.
“What happened next?” Emma asked. Quill had no idea, but he quickly looked at Caden, “Cade n is going to tell us.” Caden sat up, “Am I?” “Yes, it’s a group story.” Quill answered. Caden said in a scaring voice, “Bob was sure this was the end of his day. Then, a long, shiny thing appeared over him.”
“A knife!” Alice shouted. “Alice, it’s your turn.” Quill said. Alice added, “Then something dropped. The knife spread it all over Bob.” “Salad cream.” said Emma and pulled Quill’s T-shirt. Alice continued, “Suddenly, a giant hand lifted Bob towards a big hole. Bob screamed, ‘Help!’ ”
Caden wanted to cut in, but Alice stopped him. Quill smiled at Emma. Emma took a deep breath, and said, “Bob screamed again. The hand was surprised and dropped Bob. Bob ran away.”
“So, the bread is free.” Caden cut in.
“Not finished!” Emma shouted, “Just then, a bread truck appeared. Bob ran towards it. But something big followed him.”
“What was that?” a kid asked. Emma sat forward. Caden could feel his own breath, as if he was also there with Bob. SNAP! Emma clapped her hands. Everyone jumped up and asked, “What happened?” “A dog ate him.” Emma said, laughing.
In the rest of the night, all the kids were talking about that dog.

In the bright moonlight, Jack is walking home. Suddenly, he finds a hawk (鹰) lying beside a box. Very curious, he begins to check it.
The hawk seems to be in pain. One of its wings looks broken, touching the ground. Its eyes look scared. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps (包裹) it carefully round the hawk. Then he carries it home.
“I can’t take him into the house,” he thinks. “My mum doesn’t like animals in the house!”
Thinking for a while, Jack decides to hide the hawk in the garden shed (棚子). He secretly puts the hawk down on the floor with his T-shirt. Looking at the hawk, he says, “It’s your home now. Call you Falco, OK?”
After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don’t allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can’t fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco.
In the early morning, Jack takes some bread to feed Falco and goes back to his room secretly. After breakfast, Jack goes to the garden shed, holding a small bowl of water.
In the shed, he finds Falco sitting quietly in a corner, the bread still on the floor. Falco’s eyes are open, but not bright now. Jack puts the water in front of Falco. At first, Falco ignores (忽视) it, then he begins to drink. Jack sits quietly, looking at him, imagining Falco flying in the endless blue sky. But now he is trapped on the earth. “How can I help you return to the sky, Falco?”
When Jack leaves the shed, his brother Jim is waiting for him outside.
“What’s so interesting in the shed?”
“Nothing.”
“Tell me the truth, Jack. I think you haven’t forgotten my broken rocket!”
Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.
“Jim, please don’t say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket.”
“My rocket isn’t important, Jack. But Falco is!”
Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco.
Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can’t fly.
One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, “Falco is well enough to fly again!” Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad, but he knows they are right.
One evening, Jack and Jim are sitting in their room. It is a cool and quiet evening. Suddenly, he hears a cry from far away. A familiar (熟悉的) cry. A bird is flying in circles across the sky. It’s Falco! Jack watches it fly, happy and wild.

(2024·江苏扬州·中考真题)One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare (敢于) not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter?” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
John took me to the stable. Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it, for I was tired.

(2025·江苏镇江·一模)I often wondered why Sir Oliver, the oldest horse in the stable, had so short a tail—only about twenty centimetres long—and one day I asked him, “Did you have an accident?”
“It was no accident!” he said angrily. “My long and beautiful tail was cut off when I was a young horse. At that time, some owners thought it was fashionable!”
“How terrible!” I said.
“Yes, terrible and cruel,” said Sir Oliver. “Now I can never brush the flies off my sides or back legs, and all because of fashion. Some owners cut off the tails of their dogs to make them look brave, or cut their pretty little ears to make them look fashionable. They don’t cut off the ends of their children’s ears, do they? Why do they think it’s all right to do these things to their animals?”
Mr Gordon was never cruel, and he would not stand by and watch others be cruel to animals. We were riding home one morning when we saw a big man driving towards us in a small carriage, pulled by a beautiful little pony (小马). As he got to the Park gates, the pony turned towards them. Without warning, the man pulled the pony’s head round so roughly that the little animal almost fell over. Then he began to whip (抽打) the pony angrily. The animal tried to move forward, but the man held it back and continued to whip it.
“Sawyer!” shouted my master.
The man looked up. He was a builder who often came to the Park to do work. “He’s too fond of going his own way!” he told my master. “He’s not supposed to turn in through your gates; the road is straight on.”
“You often drive that pony to my house,” said my master. “It only shows that the horse is intelligent and remembers these things. How could he know you weren’t going there today? I’ve never seen a horse beaten so cruelly or with so much anger. What will people think of you, Sawyer? As well as hurting the horse, you hurt your own good name—do you want people to think of you as a cruel, bad-tempered man?”
We went home slowly, and I could tell by his voice that the master was unhappy at what we had seen.

(2025·江苏泰州·一模)Cassy made a plan for her and Emmeline. No one wanted to go to the attic (阁楼) in Legree’s house because everyone thought it was full of ghosts and Legree was afraid of ghosts. “Uncle Tom, my poor, poor friend!” Tom opened his eyes. “Master George! You remembered me! It’s going well,” said Tom and then he closed his eyes forever. (2025·江苏扬州·一模)I knew I was all right now. Nobody else would come a-hunting after me. I got my traps out of the canoe and made me a nice camp in the thick woods. When it was dark I sat by my camp fire, feeling pretty satisfied but by and by, it got sort of lonesome, so I went and sat on the bank and listened to the current crashing along, and counted the stars and drift logs and rafts that came down, and then went to bed. There was no better way to put in time when you are lonesome, you can’t stay so, and you soon get it over.
And so for three days and nights. No difference. But the next day I went exploring around the island. I went fooling along in the deep woods till I judged I wasn’t far from the foot of the island. I had my gun along, but I had shot nothing, it was for protection. About this time I almost stepped on a good-sized snake, and it moved quietly and smoothly through the grass and flowers, and I was after it, trying to get a shot at it. I clipped (疾驰) along and all of a sudden I bounded (跳) right on to the ashes of a camp fire that was still smoking.
My heart jumped up among my lungs. I never waited to look further, but unlocked my gun and went sneaking back on my tiptoes as fast as I could. Every now and then, I stopped a second among the thick leaves and listened, but my breath came so hard that I couldn’t hear anything else. I moved quietly along another piece further, then listened again and so on. If I saw a stump (树桩), I took it for a man; If I stepped on a stick and broke it, it made me feel that a person had cut one of my breaths in two and I only got half.
There was no time to be fooling around. When getting to the camp, I got all my traps into my canoe again to have them out of sight. I put out the fire and threw the ashes around to look like an old last year’s camp, and then climbed a tree.
I suppose I was up for two hours but I didn’t see or hear anything—l only thought I heard and saw as much as a thousand things. Well, I couldn’t stay up there forever. So at last I got down, but I kept in the thick woods and on the lookout all the time. All I could get to eat was berries and what was left over from breakfast.

My mother counted out the coins the Captain owed her. I picked up the papers wrapped in cloth. Then we heard a noise. It was the sound of the blind man’s stick-tap, tap-tapping on the road outside the inn. It came nearer and nearer. Then it stopped. It started again, but this time it was moving away.

It was December and the snow was falling quietly outside. The four March sisters were sitting around the fire in the parlor (客厅). They were knitting socks for soldiers. There was a war and everyone had to help.
Meg was the oldest of the four sisters. She was sixteen. She was very pretty and she loved pretty clothes. Jo was fifteen. She was very tall and thin. She was different from Meg. She didn’t care about dresses or hairstyles. She was a tomboy (假小子). Beth was thirteen. She was very shy and quiet and she seemed to live in a happy world of her own. The youngest, Amy looked like a snow princess with her blue eyes and blonde hair. She loved beautiful things and she was a little vain (虚荣的). She also thought that she was a very important person.
“Christmas isn’t Christmas without any presents,” Jo said sadly. “I hate being poor!” Meg said, looking at her old dress.
“Some girls have lots of nice things, and other girls have nothing at all,” said Amy. “I don’t think it’s fair.”
“But we’ve got Father and Mother, and each other,” said Beth. The four sisters looked happy for a moment when they remembered this.
Then Jo said, “But we haven’t got Father.”
Their smiles suddenly disappeared. Mr March was far away with the soldiers.
“Mother says our men are suffering and we mustn’t spend money for pleasure,” Meg said. “That’s why we can’t have presents this year.”
“Well, each of us has a dollar to spend,” said Jo. “What can the army do with four dollars? Nothing! I don’t expect anything from Mother but I’d like to buy a book for myself.” Jo loved reading and she had a passion for books.
“I wanted to spend mine on some new music,” said Beth. She played the piano and she loved singing.
“I’m going to buy a box of drawing pencils. I really need them,” said Amy. She wanted to be an artist.
“Mother didn’t say anything about spending our own money,” cried Jo. “We work hard for it, so let’s buy what we want and have a little fun.”
It was true. The two older sisters had jobs. Meg worked as a teacher for the King family and Jo looked after Aunt March, their father’s rich, bad-tempered old aunt. Beth and Amy helped with the housework.

(2025·江苏宿迁·一模)During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island (岛屿), I could see the other islands, and I said to myself, ‘‘Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”
So I decided to make myself a boat, I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole (洞) in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why didn’t I think before I began work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make, I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.
I kept food and tools (工具) at both my houses, and also wild goats (山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats’ milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn (玉米) fields. And so many years went by.

(24-25九年级上·江苏扬州·期中)Scrooge lived in Jacob Marley’s old apartment. It was very rundown (破旧). And it was so gloomy (阴暗的) that nobody else wanted to live there. The rest of the rooms were offices. That evening, the fog and frost hung over the black gateway to the house. And the yard was so dark that Scrooge had to feel his way along with his hands. There was nothing strange about the knocker on the door of the house. Scrooge saw it every night and every morning. But tonight, when Scrooge put his key in the lock, he saw Marley’s face instead of the knocker. It was definitely Marley’s face. Scrooge stared at the face. And it became a knocker again. Scrooge was scared but he put his hand on the key again. He quickly turned it. Then he walked inside and lit a candle. After that he closed the door with a bang. The sound echoed (回响) through the house like thunder. But Scrooge was not frightened by echoes. He locked the door and walked across the hall and slowly up the stairs. It was very dark because Scrooge only had a candle. But darkness didn’t worry Scrooge. Darkness is cheap, and Scrooge liked cheap things. But before he shut the heavy door of his apartment, he looked in every room. There was nobody in the sitting room or the bedroom. Scrooge closed his door, and then locked it. Then he took off his cravat and put on his dressing—gown and slippers.
Finally he sat down in front of the fire to eat his gruel. Suddenly he heard a loud clanking (叮当声) sound. It came from downstairs. I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced. I would go out and see the sunrise, with the first light of day shining on the moving water.
Then Captain Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I knew these forests were under the sea.
During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits (潜水服) that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We must go through a door into the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. At one hundred metres deep, the suits worked very well, and we could still see quite well. Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.

As he went along the road, he thought, “Today at school I will learn to read at once. Tomorrow, I will begin to write. The day after tomorrow, I will... Then, with what I will learn, I will make a great deal of money, and with the money I will buy a new cloth coat for my dad Geppetto. No! It should be all made of gold and silver. That poor man really deserves (值得) it!”
Suddenly, he heard music that sounded like fifes (横笛) and the beating of a big drum. He stopped and listened. The sounds came from the end of across street.
“What can that music be? What a pity that I have to go to school, or else...” Pinocchio said. And he remained irresolute (犹豫不决的). “Should I go to school? Or should I go to the place where the music came from?” he said to himself. He thought for a while, and then he made a decision.
The faster he ran, the nearer came the sounds of fifes and the beating of a big drum. At last, he found himself in the middle of a square quite full of people, who were all crowded (拥挤的) round a building.
“What is that building?’ asked Pinocchio, turning to a little boy.
“Read the poster—it is all written—and then you will know.”
“I would read it willingly, but it so happens (碰巧) that today I don’t know how to read.”
“Well. I will read it to you. The writing on that poster is: The Great Puppet (木偶) Theatre.”
“Has the play begun?”
“It is beginning now.”
“How much does it cost to go in?”
“A dime (一角).”
Pinocchio was very curious. Without any shame, he said to the little boy, “Would you lend me a dime?”
“I would lend it to you willingly,” said the little boy, “but it so happens that today I cannot give it to you.”
“I will sell you my jacket for a dime.” Pinocchio said.
What can I do with a jacket made of flowered paper? If there were rain and it got wet, it would be impossible to get it off my back.”
“Will you buy my shoes?’
“They will only be of use to light the fire.”
“How much will you give me for my cap?”
“A cap made of bread crumb (屑)? There will be a risk of the mice coming to eat it when it was on my head.”
“Will you give me a dime for this new spelling-book?”
“No. I don’t buy from boys.”
“I will buy the spelling-book for a dime,” called out a hawker (小贩) who sold old clothes. He had been listening to the conversation.

“Who goes there?” asked Captain Smollett.

“Captain Silver?” said the captain. “Who’s he?”
“When you deserted the ship, I became the captain, sir,” replied Silver.
“I am willing to come to an agreement. Can I come in?” Silver asked. But Captain Smollett refused.
“It’s a cold morning to sit outside on the sand,” said Silver.
“An honest man can sit on his ship. It’s your choice. You are either my ship’s cook and an honest sailor or Captain Silver, a mutineer (反叛者) and a pirate (海盗). Well, what do you have to say?”
“We are going to find the treasure,” said Silver. “So give us the map. Here are our conditions: you can either join us when we find the treasure and we’ll leave you in a safe place on the journey home. Or you can stay here, with half the ship’s supplies (补给), and I’ll tell the first ship we see where you are.”
“Is that all?” asked the captain.
“If you refuse our conditions,” replied Silver, “then we will fight you to the end.”
“No,” said Captain Smollett. “We can’t accept your conditions. Now, listen. Here are my conditions: you and your pirates must come to the fort, one by one and unarmed (缴械). You become my prisoners and I will let you have a fair trial (审判) in England. If you don’t accept this, then I’ll kill you all. You can’t find the treasure. You can’t sail a ship. You can’t fight—Gray here escaped from five of you on the ship. These are my last words. I’ll kill you the next time I meet you. Now, get out.” Silver looked at the captain angrily.
“I will break your wooden fort to pieces within an hour,” he shouted. And he stumbled (蹒跚而行) down the hill, and disappeared into the woods.
“They are going to attack,” said the captain, coming back in. “We’re outnumbered (寡不敌众), but we have the protection of the fort.” The captain then gave his orders.
“Doctor, take the door, but do not let them see you. Hunter, take the east side, Joyce, the west. Mr Trelawney, you’re the best shot—you and Gray take this north side with the five gun holes. Shoot when you see anyone. Hawkins, you and I will load the guns and help where we’re needed.” The pirates climbed inside the fence. The squire and Gray fired again and again; three men fell, two were dead, and the third ran back to the woods.
After shooting for a while, we rushed outside, and fought them in the open with our swords. We killed more of them. The rest of the pirates ran away. When the fighting was over we went back inside. The numbers were now reduced from seven of us against nineteen pirates to four against nine.

Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.
“Jim, please don’t say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket.”

(24-25九年级上·江苏连云港·期中)Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms. The sound of waves hitting the sides of the Nautilus, which we couldn’t hear when it was under the water.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up we walked further.

(24-25九年级上·江苏宿迁·期中)As soon as it stopped snowing, Pinocchio set out for school with his fine spelling-book under his arm.

The book was sold there and then. Pinocchio got a dime. While poor Geppetto, his dad, was shaking with cold in his shirt at home in order that his son should have a spelling-book.

“Who goes there?” asked Captain Smollett.
“Captain Silver,” answered Long John Silver. “I’ve come to make an agreement.”
