“A good book is easy to find. ” That is the message on a sign at Hernando Guanlao’s home in the Makati area of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
Guanlao has turned his home into a free public library. Visitors can borrow the books inside for free. Guanlao hopes his library will inspire people to read, especially the young. The 72-year-old said that his library includes books that all students can enjoy — from young children in kindergarten to older students in grade 12.
Guanlao’s library has books for readers of all interests. He spoke to reporters at his home, which is filled with thousands of available books.
He calls his library Reading Club 2000. It contains many different kinds of books, or genres (体裁) . Genre is a group of artistic, musical, or literary works that share a particular style, form, or content. Some genres in literature are poetry, non-fiction (or real stories) , and fiction (or imaginary stories) . Then there are “sub-genres” such as cookbooks, science fiction, and mystery, to name just a few.
He started his library more than 20 years ago when he set 50 books on the walkway in front of his home. Guanlao’s collection has grown greatly over the years — thanks to a continuous supply of books from donors.
Speaking of donors, he said, “They just leave boxes of books outside my house.” He has also started donating books himself. He sends reading materials to public schools in far-away communities.
Guanlao’s efforts come at a time when reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. The Programme for International Student Assessment reports that reading scores in the Philippines are among the lowest in the world. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development runs that programme. Students in the Philippines are also facing learning delays in math and science.
Guanlao is firm about his goals: “My mission (使命) is to give away used and donated books to others at no cost,” he said, “and to promote education through literature.”
24. Who are the main targeted readers of Reading Club 2000?
A. The youth. B. Literary lovers.
C. Middle-aged and old readers. D. Community book donors.
25. Which statement about Guanlao’s library is UNTRUE according to the text?
A. The book classification is very detailed.
B. The library continuously buys books for public schools.
C. The collection of the library is constantly expanding.
D. Rich books can satisfy various reading tastes.
26. What was the original intention behind the establishment of this private library?
A. To increase social influence.
B. To enrich the cultural atmosphere.
C. To respond to the government's call.
D. To help with the backward education situation in Philippines.
27. What is Guanlao like?
A. He is a self-disciplined teacher. B. He has a strong sense of social responsibility.
C. He is an industrious volunteer in the library. D. He is traditional and conservative.
C
Here is a situation: you and a new acquaintance(相识的人) are having a conversation. The conversation has a pleasant atmosphere. You leave, satisfied. Hours later, a thought appears. “Ugh, I really shouldn’t have said that.” You can’t stop replaying the conversation over and over, picking out moments when you sounded like a babbling (胡言乱语的) baby. You finally conclude that you’re a fool who doesn’t know how to communicate.
What you’ve experienced is the liking gap, a theory that explains that people commonly underestimate how well they’re liked after communicating with another person. Researchers published the first study on it just a few years ago in Psychological Science. To find and demonstrate the liking gap, the researchers looked at several scenes where people were just getting to know each other: as strangers got acquainted in a lab, as freshmen got to know their roommates, and as strangers got to know each other in a workshop. In each scene, researchers asked each person how much they liked the person they talked with, and how much they thought their conversation partner liked them. Across the board, people rated their “perceived liking” lower than they were actually liked. The liking gap usually exists between newly acquainted people, but researchers say it also exists between friends who haven’t communicated with each other for a long time.
The liking gap exists because we can’t ask people how much they like us after a conversation. We have to run back over the conversation and reevaluate everything we said, wondering how it sounded to a stranger. Those guesses are often influenced by an inner talk that’s rather negative. As the researchers learned, people underestimate how well-liked they are, even in situations where the person they’re talking with gives signals(smiles or hand gestures) that they like the conversation. Because we are too absorbed in thinking about what we’re saying and how it sounds to notice those signals, the liking gap still exists.
The liking gap is important for us to understand the influence we have on other people. People like us more than we realize, which in turn means we have more influence than we realize.
One comfort is that, in the case of the college roommates, researchers found that the liking gap narrowed with time. While you may feel stupid around new people or just people you haven’t contacted for years, it is scientifically demonstrated that the feeling won’t continue. As you get to know someone better and feel more confident in your communication with them, the gap gets smaller.
28. How do you feel at last in Paragraph 1?
A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Surprised. D. Cheerful.
29. How did the researchers prove the existence of the liking gap?
A. By comparing people’s answers. B. By observing people’s expressions.
C. By researching the content of the talks. D. By judging the views people expressed in the talks.
30. Why does the liking gap continue to exist even though positive signals are given?
A. Because we are interested in the words.
B. Because we pay much more attention to ourselves.
C. Because our inner talks disagree with those positive signals.
D. Because our conversation partners give those signals out of politeness.
31. What can we infer about the liking gap according to the passage?
A. It makes people feel stupid all the time. B. It reduces people’s influence on others.
C. It lets people underestimate their influence. D. It leads to less communication among people.
D
While tortillas (玉米粉圆饼) come to mind when Mexico is mentioned, every January 6, Mexicans’ love of bread reaches the highest point with the cutting of oval brioche (奶油蛋卷) decorated with candied fruit known as king cakes to celebrate a special festival.
Just hours before Mexicans took their first slices, hundreds of shoppers packed amid the overwhelming smell of fresh-baked bread inside the Ideal Bakery, one of Mexico City’s oldest bakeries, to buy their king cakes, known as “rosca de reyes”.
Among the big crowd was Dalia Hernandez, a 34-year-old homemaker who was thrilled to go to the bakery. “I really like coming to the bakery. Last year, only my husband came, but this time we all came because it is part of a family tradition,” she said. “The tradition of the cakes has lived on and we are so crazy about them because they are part of our culture, our identity as Mexicans.”
The king cakes have their origins in 14th-century France and Spain and got to Mexico Later. Even though the king cake is a seasonal treat eaten only during the early days of January, it’s something enjoyed by all levels of Mexican society, keeping demand high, said Oswaldo Tapia, chef for the company NTD Ingredients.
Mexico has added its own touches, making it in an oval shape and often filling it with cream. Traditionally, Mexicans had decorated their king cakes with acitron, a candied element from a particular type of cactus (仙人掌). But the government prohibited that in 2005 due to the impact on the species. Other fruits are now substituted for it.
The figurine (小雕像) of a baby is hidden inside the cakes. The person who finds the figurine in their slice is supposed to buy tamales (玉米粉蒸肉) for everyone present on February 2, another feast day.
Inside the Ideal Bakery Wednesday, Ana Morales, a 54-year-old businesswoman, recalled running through the building’s patio as a child. Her family lived in an upper part of the building so she awoke each morning to the smell of baking bread.
“This place is fascinating, beautiful,” Morales said. “Coming today for a real rosca de reyes is to live a beautiful festival. The truth is whoever doesn’t eat rosca de reyes doesn’t know Mexico. This is the taste of Mexico. It is a tradition and a privilege to be able to still enjoy bread.”
32. Why are Mexicans crazy about the king cakes according to Dalia Hernandez?
A. Because they regard the king cakes as a cultural symbol of Mexico.
B. Because they are easily influenced by family members.
C. Because they believe the king cakes can help them fight against bad things.
D. Because they consider the king cakes as the best food for a family get-together.
33. What can we learn about the king cakes from the passage?
A. Poor Mexicans can barely afford them.
B. They cannot be enjoyed all year around.
C. They come in a variety of shapes in Mexico.
D. They were introduced to Mexico in the early 14th century.
34. What was the problem with the king cakes decorated with acitron?
A. They were not as delicious as expected.
B. They were not attractive in appearance.
C. Acitron could not be widely found in Mexico.
D The growth of a special plant was affected.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce a special Mexican food.
B. To show the Mexican way to bake bread.
C. To explore the origin of a popular Mexican food.
D. To prove the popularity of a Mexican food worldwide.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

He spoke to reporters at his home which is filled with thousands of available books.

【答案】28. B 29. A 30. B 31. C

C Because they believe the king cakes can help them fight against bad things.
D. The growth of a special plant was affected.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce a special Mexican food.
B. To show the Mexican way to bake bread.
C. To explore the origin of a popular Mexican food.
D. To prove the popularity of a Mexican food worldwide.

【导语】本文是说明文。文章介绍了技术压力这一现象,以及如何通过一些策略来应对技术压力。语篇鼓励考生正确处理生活中的问题,关注身心健康。
【36题详解】
空前“Are all the emails and social media notifications making you anxious or getting you down? Is having to learn yet another new piece of software stressing you out? Are the boundaries between family life and work life unclear because of technology?(所有的电子邮件和社交媒体通知是否让你感到焦虑或沮丧?不得不学习另一款新软件会让你感到压力吗?由于科技的发展,家庭生活和工作生活之间的界限变得模糊了吗?)”通过三个并列问句描述技术影响人们的场景;空后“The term is used to describe the negative psychological effect that using new technologies can have.(这个词用来描述使用新技术可能产生的负面心理影响。)”
空前“Technostress can be broken down into a few subcategories including techno-overload, techno-complexity and techno-invasion.(技术压力可以分为几个子类,包括技术超载、技术复杂性和技术入侵。)”提到了技术压力的几种子类别,故空处内容应涉及这些子类别。对比选项可知,A项中的“All of them”可承接上文,指代“techno-overload, techno-complexity and techno-invasion”,所以A选项“所有这些都会对健康产生重大影响。”起到承上启下作用。故选A项。
【38题详解】
空前“Some may feel tension in the body, which can lead to headaches and back pain.(有些人可能会感到身体紧张,这会导致头痛和背痛。)”提到了技术压力可能产生的一些问题。空后“That is why dealing with technostress is vital to overall health.(这就是为什么应对技术压力对整体健康至关重要。)”
空后“Acknowledge that it’s a sign of strength and courage to recognize a mental health challenge and take steps to manage it. Experts encourage people struggling with technostress to take steps in the workplace to get involved in how technology may be used.(承认这是一种力量和勇气的标志,认识到心理健康的挑战,并采取措施来管理它。专家们鼓励那些与技术压力作斗争的人在工作场所采取措施,了解如何使用技术。)”提到了对待技术压力的态度,是所有G项“首先要做的是接受有技术压力是正常的”能概括下文内容,符合语境。故选G项。
【40题详解】
空前“Taking time each day to get outside is also a great way. By all accounts, there’s almost nothing that aids in stress management so much as a few hours spent in the park, the woods or the mountains.(每天花点时间出去走走也是一个很好的方法。大家都说,几乎没有什么比在公园、树林或山上呆上几个小时更能帮助管理压力了。)”提到了花点时间出去走走,所以C项“对大多数人来说,这样的时间是现成的资源。”能承接上文,且Such time与空前的a few hours spent in the park, the woods or the mountains呼应。故选C项。

【答案】范文:
Learning A New Skill
The new skill I acquired was skating. The process is challenging but productive.
Initially, on watching the Winter Olympics Games in Beijing, I became enthusiastic about skating. From then on, I was determined to master this fascinating sport. However, at the very beginning, when I stepped on the ice, I stumbled over myself. Hard as I strive, I still fell over again and again. The moment I thought of the athletes on the field, I was inspired by their powerful spirits. Eventually, my persistence and painstaking efforts paid off. I can skate freely all by myself.
From the learning experience, I fully understand that only by diligent practicing can we overcome many kinds of difficulties. And eventually, we can have a good command of what we desire to learn.

77. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A few days later, the big day for the play arrived.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed? Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.
