Education in 2080 is distinctive from education in the 2020s. Until about 2035, the main function of education systems was to supply the economy with the next generation of workers. In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members. To make this a bit more tangible for you, I would like to give an example of what a child’s education looks like in 2080. Her name is Shemsy. Shemsy is 13, and she is confident and loves learning.
Shemsy does not go to school in the morning because schools as you know them no longer exist. The institution was abolished as it was widely thought of as more like a prison or a factory than a creative learning environment. Schools have been replaced with “Learning Hubs” that are not restricted to certain ages. They are where intergenerational learning happens, in line with the belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
Every year, Shemsy designs her learning journey for the year with a highly attentive “teacher-citizen”. Shemsy is actively engaged in designing her education and has to propose projects she would like to be involved in to contribute to and serve her community. She also spends lots of time playing as the role of play in learning has finally been recognized as essential and core to our humanity. Shemsy works a lot collaboratively. Access to education is universal, and higher education institutions no longer differentiate themselves by how many people they reject yearly. Variability between students is expected and leveraged (利用) as young people teach one another and use their differences as a source of strength. Shemsy naturally explores what she is curious about at a pace she sets. She still has some classes to take that are mandatory for children globally: Being Human and the History of Humanity.
We invite you to think about your vision for education in the year 2080, what does it look like, who does it serve, and how does it transform our societies?
4. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. There are different types of education.
B. The present education needs improvements.
C. Education and economy are closely associated.
D. The goal of future education is fundamentally different.
5. What do we know about the Learning Hub that Shemsy goes to?
A. It accepts students of all ages. B. It promotes competition.
C. It discourages individualized learning. D. It is all about play-based learning.
6. What does the underlined word “mandatory” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Tough. B. Satisfactory. C. Optional. D. Required.
7. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. An Example to All B. A Vision for Education
C. A Challenge for Education D. A Journey into the Future
C
Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing (冲洗)off raw poultry. Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria.
The do — not — wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.
But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.
The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌)and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.
To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.
8. People don't accept USDA's advice because____.
A. the advice is relatively new
B. cleaning seems more trustworthy
C. cooks clean the turkey before cooking it
D. heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food
9. What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?
A. Food packages carry germs.
B. Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli.
C. Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not.
D. Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.
10. Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?
A. Rinse off the turkey before it is heated.
B. Keep the turkey away from the lettuce and refrigerator.
C. Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.
D. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.
11. From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken?
A. Culture. B. Science.
C. Education. D. Medicine.
D
To study the behavior of wild animals, scientists routinely tag them with solar-powered GPS location trackers. But such devices’ battery capacity limits how long they operate, often bringing an early end to vital conservation work. Solar-powered trackers break easily, making them a poor choice for devices strapped to larger mammals—and they don’t work for night creatures.
So biologist Rasmus Worsoe Havmoller of the University of Copenhagen and his colleagues turned to another abundant power source: kinetic energy generated by an animal’s movements. It is also lighter and cheaper to make than its battery-powered counterparts. The design “is creative and exciting,” says Mark Hebblewhite, a habitat ecologist at the University of Montana. The proof-of-concept kinetic tracker works by means of a magnetic pendulum (摆钟) that swings around a copper coil, generating electricity as it moves.
Their kinetic tracker, which Havmoller’s team recently tested on domestic dogs, a wild pony and a European bison, could theoretically survive for the entire life span of an active animal. The dogs and bison in the study were active enough to create the energy to transmit one location signal per day for 14 days and 17 days, respectively. One of the wild pony’s trackers lasted at least 146 days but didn’t produce enough power for daily transmissions, the researchers reported in PLOS ONE. The limited power generated by the animals’ movements means the technology isn’t ready for prime time just yet, says ecologist Emily Studd of British Columbia’s Thompson Rivers University, who wasn’t involved in the study.
When researchers want to keep close tabs on animals, they often need GPS fixes more than once a day. But Studd says that “with a bit more development, this could be a game changer for wildlife animal research and monitoring.”
12. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The capacity of solar-powered GPS location trackers.
B. The limitations of solar-powered GPS location trackers.
C. The importance of conservation efforts for wild animals.
D. The challenges faced by scientists in tagging wild animals.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. The copper coil.
B. The kinetic tracker.
C. The tagged animal.
D. The solar-powered tracker.
14. What can we learn from the research?
A. The dogs had a low level of activity.
B. The kinetic tracker often functions improperly.
C. The research needs more scientists to get involved.
D. High levels of activity may lead to consistent transmissions.
15 What can be a suitable title for this text?
A. Trackers and Animals Can Coexist
B. New Wildlife Trackers Run on Animal Power
C. Kinetic Trackers Outperform Solar-powered Trackers
D. Technology Progress Contributes to Wildlife Conservation

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.

And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.”
根据最后一段中的“To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees.”
15. What can be a suitable title for this text?
A. Trackers and Animals Can Coexist
B. New Wildlife Trackers Run on Animal Power
C. Kinetic Trackers Outperform Solar-powered Trackers
D. Technology Progress Contributes to Wildlife Conservation
B 13. B 14. D 15. B
根据第一段“To study the behavior of wild animals, scientists routinely tag them with solar-powered GPS location trackers. But such devices’ battery capacity limits how long they operate, often bringing an early end to vital conservation work. Solar-powered trackers break easily, making them a poor choice for devices strapped to larger mammals—and they don’t work for night creatures. (为了研究野生动物的行为,科学家们经常给它们贴上太阳能GPS定位追踪器。但这类设备的电池容量限制了它们的运行时间,通常会使至关重要的保护工作提前结束。太阳能追踪器很容易损坏,这使得它们不适合绑在大型哺乳动物身上,而且它们不适用于夜间动物)”可知,本段主要从电池容量有限和易损坏两个方面介绍了太阳能GPS定位追踪器的局限性。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词所在句“The proof-of-concept kinetic tracker works by means of a magnetic pendulum (摆钟) that swings around a copper coil, generating electricity as it moves. (这个概念验证的动能跟踪器的工作原理是通过一个绕着铜线圈摆动的磁摆,当它移动时产生电力)”可知,此处介绍该动能跟踪器的工作原理,即当跟踪器随着运动的动物运动时,钟摆摆动,让跟踪器产生电力。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Their kinetic tracker, which Havmoller’s team recently tested on domestic dogs, a wild pony and a European bison, could theoretically survive for the entire life span of an active animal. The dogs and bison in the study were active enough to create the energy to transmit one location signal per day for 14 days and 17 days, respectively. One of the wild pony’s trackers lasted at least 146 days but didn’t produce enough power for daily transmissions, the researchers reported in PLOS ONE.
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“So biologist Rasmus Worsoe Havmoller of the University of Copenhagen and his colleagues turned to another abundant power source: kinetic energy generated by an animal’s movements.
How to communicate complex information?
Did you ever have to read a presentation where you felt like you’re lost in confusing terms, data and concepts? Are you giving others this same experience? ___16___ But there are ways you can simplify your presentation and reengage your audience. Here’s how you can get complex information across.
Use interactive content. It gets the readers more involved in your presentation by letting them play an active part. ___17___ Beyond that, questionnaires and chatbots provide personalized and specific answers to readers as part of your presentation. Making your presentation interactive used to be hard, but now you can just use Storydoc. Go make your first interactive presentation. It’s easy as pie.
___18___ No one will read a presentation with a thousand words. Do everyone a favor and use images. Images can be super effective at communicating complex information and save you a lot of needless text. In fact, visual representation of data and concepts can often convey what words cannot. Use diagrams and images to illustrate your points and simplify the complex.
Narrate your content. ___19___ Whether it’s through text to speech Al or video bubbles, centering your presentation around a story can help guide your audience through the complexity, making it more digestible, engaging, and memorable.
Use examples and fables. They can help explain clearly the complexity of ideas for they are what we’ve already known and understood. ___20___ More importantly, the real secret lies in selecting examples that are not just familiar but also deeply relevant-those are the ones that will truly ring with your listeners
A. Show, don’t tell
B. Make every word count.
C This makes the complex concepts less new and more familiar
D. If you don’t sound excited, the listeners won’t feel excited either
E. Storytelling is another powerful tool for communicating complex concepts.
F. Communicating complex information is a common challenge in presentations
G. For example, allow them to choose the content route they wish to take and control the pace.
F 17. G 18. A 19. E 20. C
根据空前“Did you ever have to read a presentation where you felt like you’re lost in confusing terms, data and concepts? Are you giving others this same experience? (你是否曾经读过一篇演讲,感觉自己迷失在混乱的术语、数据和概念中?你会给别人同样的经历吗?)”可知空前就交流中可能出现的术语、数据和概念的混乱提出了两个问题,根据空后“But there are ways you can simplify your presentation and reengage your audience. Here’s how you can get complex information across. (但是有一些方法可以简化你的演讲并重新吸引你的听众。下面是如何传递复杂信息的方法。)”可知此处指出有一些可以传递复杂信息的方法,空处承上启下,所以空处应该提出传递复杂信息这个话题,F项Communicating complex information is a common challenge in presentations.
It gets the readers more involved in your presentation by letting them play an active part. (使用交互式内容。这会让读者更积极地参与到你的演讲中来。)”可知本段的建议是使用交互式内容,根据空后“Beyond that, questionnaires and chatbots provide personalized and specific answers to readers as part of your presentation. (除此之外,问卷调查和聊天机器人为读者提供个性化和具体的答案,作为你演讲的一部分。)”可知此处仍然讲的是交互式内容的好处,空处呈上启下,所以空处应该就空前所提到的交互式内容举出例子,G项For example, allow them to choose the content route they wish to take and control the pace.
根据空后“No one will read a presentation with a thousand words. Do everyone a favor and use images. (没有人会读一篇一千字的报告。帮大家一个忙,使用图片。)”可知此处讲的是要善于运用图片而不是篇幅较长的文字来展示自己所讲的内容,所以空处的建议应该是运用展示而不是讲的方式来传递复杂信息,A项Show, don’t tell(展示,不要告诉)指出要用展示的方式,概括了本段的主旨大意,符合上下文语境。故选A项。
可知本段的建议是运用讲故事的方式来传递复杂信息,根据空后“Whether it’s through text to speech Al or video bubbles, centering your presentation around a story can help guide your audience through the complexity, making it more digestible, engaging, and memorable. (无论是通过文本到语音还是视频气泡,以故事为中心的演讲都可以帮助引导观众理解复杂的内容,使其更容易理解、更吸引人、更难忘。)”可知此处讲的仍然是通过讲故事的形式来传递信息的好处,所以空后应该对这一建议所能采用的方法进行进一步的解释,E项Storytelling is another powerful tool for communicating complex concepts.
根据空前“Use examples and fables. They can help explain clearly the complexity of ideas for they are what we’ve already known and understood. (使用例子和表格。它们可以帮助我们清楚地解释思想的复杂性,因为它们是我们已经知道和理解的。)”可知本段的建议是使用例子和表格来传递复杂信息,根据空后“More importantly, the real secret lies in selecting examples that are not just familiar but also deeply relevant-those are the ones that will truly ring with your listeners. (更重要的是,真正的秘诀在于选择那些不仅熟悉而且非常相关的例子——那些能真正引起听众共鸣的例子。)”可知此处依旧讲的使用例子的好处,空处承上启下,所以空处应该讲的是运用例子和表格来传递复杂信息的好处,C项This makes the complex concepts less new and more familiar.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw the shock and disbelief on their faces. I couldn’t help but approach Luella, tightly holding her hands and saying, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded at me, still appearing puzzled by the devastating sight. My family volunteered to help hers clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees from the yard. To uplift Luella’s spirits and bring her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Yet now, they were all gone. Determined to restore the beauty that once thrived, I suggested that we rebuild the garden. Luella agreed delightedly. With each bulb carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the sprouting of a new friendship between us, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give. You may receive something unexpected in return.
