Professor Simard from University of British Columbia explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. As far as Simard is concerned, actually the opposite is true: trees survive through their cooperation, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”. Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how moribund trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest. “We didn􀆳t take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly. “Trees move nutrition into the young trees before they die, but we never give them a chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future. 1.Which statement would Simard agree with? A.Trees support each other. B.Trees compete for nutrition. C.Trees depend on their needs. D.Trees cooperate with the fittest. 根据第二段中“As far as Simard is concerned, actually the opposite is true: trees survive through their cooperation, passing around necessary nutrition ‘depending on who needs it’.” A。 2.Why are the networks of neurons in brains mentioned in Paragraph 3? A.To explain the importance of fungi networks. B.To introduce the function of neuron networks. C.To illustrate how Nitrogen and carbon are shared. D.To show how the forest ecological system works. 根据第三段中“This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.” D。 3.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Energetic. B.Ancient. C.Previous. D.Dying. 根据第四段中“She explains how moribund trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow.” D。 4.What does Simard call on people to do? A.Protect tree societies. B.Cut down old trees. C.Get nutrition from nature. D.Improve our environment. 根据最后一段中“If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.” 故选A。 Ⅱ. Changing the definition of a library Now that the Internet provides us with direct access to all kinds of information, some people say we don􀆳t need public libraries. 1 .  Finnish designers have used the new concept of a useful public space. 2 .The library opened its doors at the end of last year.  Antti Nousjoki, one of Oodi􀆳s architects, said the idea is to make the place “an indoor town square”. 3 .According to Tash Reith⁃Banks of The Guardian, this is quite different from the normal idea of libraries- “stale (陈腐的) and silent”.  Of course, Oodi still serves as a traditional library, with a catalogue of about 100,000 books. 4 . But considering the fact that Oodi has attracted almost a million viewers during the past four months, with around 7,500 daily visitors, it􀆳s providing more than just books.  While most libraries around the world offer Internet access and other services, Finnish libraries often differ themselves in services, including access to e⁃publications, power tools and even karaoke. 5 .Its multi⁃function rooms are designed to accommodate both noisy and quiet activities. It also offers devices like a 3D printer and recording studios.  “Oodi has been designed to give citizens and visitors a free space to actively do what they want to do —not just be a consumer,” said Nousjoki. A.Oodi goes even further B.It attracts many visitors with each new month C.Oodi has many advantages over traditional libraries D.Since opening, Oodi lends out 5,000 books each day E.Library Oodi pushes the boundaries (边界) of what a library can be F.This may be why some public libraries are finding new ways to serve the public G.The building was designed without inner support columns(柱子), so the inside is mostly a large open space 【语篇解读】 这是一篇说明文。 1.答案与解析:F 上文“Now that the Internet provides us with direct access to all kinds of information, some people say we don􀆳t need public libraries.” 2.答案与解析:E 根据上文“Finnish designers have used the new concept of a useful public space.”与下文“The library opened its doors at the end of last year.” 3.答案与解析:G 上文“Antti Nousjoki, one of Oodi􀆳s architects, said the idea is to make the place ‘an indoor town square’.”中的an indoor town square与G项内容“The building was designed without inner support columns(柱子), so the inside is mostly a large open space.” 4.答案与解析:D 由上文“Of course, Oodi still serves as a traditional library, with a catalogue of about 100,000 books.” 5.答案与解析:A 根据上文“While most libraries around the world offer Internet access and other services, Finnish libraries often differ themselves in services, including access to e⁃publications, power tools and even karaoke.”和下文“Its multi⁃function rooms are designed to accommodate both noisy and quiet activities. It also offers devices like a 3D printer and recording studios.” $$
