B As a freshman, I stepped into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them. When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from the course wouldn't count toward my major. By the end of the class, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course, Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic. But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn't even on the waitlist. That's when the teacher asked for a volunteer to hand in the first workshop story. Silence covered the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they like me, had never written one before. Seizing (抓住) my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class?” He said he would. So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. Years later, I'd completed a degree in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent asked to read the first 50 'pages of my draft (草稿). Bút I wasn't comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done. Throughout graduate school, I'd been advised many times not to contact agents until I have a complete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year. So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels. Determination, focus, perseverance (坚持) — the qualities that I consider important in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I'd only concentrated on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes. 4. What made the author finally decide to take the course? A. The popularity of the course. B. Her curiosity about story writing. C. Her confidence in her writing skills. D. The need to get credits for her degree. 5. The author volunteered to write the first workshop story to_________. A. challenge herself. B. impress the teacher. C. show her talent. D. win a place in the class. 6. Why did the author send her first three chapters to the agent? A. Her friends advised her to do so. B. Her story was attractive to readers. C. The agent asked her to turn in the work. D. She wanted to get the chance of publication. 7. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. Action speaks louder than words. B. Reading enriches the mind. C. Success comes to those who will and dare. D. Chance favors only the prepared mind. C Pu’er is the home of the world-known tea of the same name. Since other tea-growing centers in Pu’er may have a larger output, more famous brands and heritage surrounding the history of the Tea-horse Ancient Road, Jingmai, also in Pu’er, nay not be people’s first choice to look for the best Pu’er Tea. However, being cut off from the outside by rivers, this mountainous area has become a perfect place for an ancient planting technique, growing too trees under forest, known as the “under-story” method, which filters (过滤) sunshine while ensuring water. Nan Kang, former head of Mangjing village, said, “Compared to modern plantations, we’ll surely produce less tea in the ancient forest. But we have to respect our tradition and belief. Birds eat insects to protect the tea and the fallen leaves from trees provide fertilizer. Everything improves the other, but also limits each other. It is the way of nature.” Nan is an old-time Blang leader’s grandson. Following an old leader named Pa Aileng, his ancestors came to settle near the Jingmai Mountain centuries ago. It is believed that Pa Aileng found that tea leaves made his people recover from diseases they suffered from during their moving to other places, so the hero is also considered as a “tea ancestor”. Blang people chose a mountain to remember him. They call it Peak Aileng. “We Blang people believe tea has its own spirit,” Nan says, “The first planted tea tree in every field is called the Tea Spirit Tree. That means the field has an owner. And the symbol also makes everyone follow moral codes and protect the plants.” Now, this mountain of tea, also a storehouse of the time-tested traditions of local ethnic groups, attracts global attention. The Tea-drinking Habit of Blang People D Children do not laugh for joy. Scientific studies, including my own, show that there is something much deeper than joy in a child’s laughter. I find that it is closely connected to brain and personality development: children laugh for very different reasons at different stages of development. Laughter begins soon after birth. Babies learn to laugh because they want to copy their parents expressions, and to receive attention and praise from them. This is the way babies learn everything at first: through copying and receiving attention and praise of adults around them. But as they grow, they learn to distinguish their own person from their parents and the world around them. Once they begin to behave on their own — from age 2 to 5 — they begin to feel something new for the first time: certain things may seem cold, strange, or out of place, and this shocks, confuses and amazes them. This is where laughter comes in: after a moment of hesitation, they understand that what seemed frightening or unexpected is actually harmless. For instance, a child laughs when they see their father with a funny clown nose. Why? Because for a second they felt embarrassed: that nose is not a “live” nose. When they understand it was just dad’s joke, they calm down and laugh. They may also laugh when their older brother makes a silly face, and the process is the same. From age 5 or 6 and up, children learn to handle abstract (抽象的) ideas, meaning they can grasp and “get” jokes. Before that, they are at the earlier stage of being self-centered, which hinders their understanding of others’ reasoning. But once they overcome it, their laughter process is the same as that of adults. These three stages of laughter development are good indicators of child’s mental growth and development. 12. Why do babies laugh soon after birth? A. They are expressing their happiness. B. They are showing their personality. C. They are learning their parents’ behavior. D. They are giving praise to their parents. 13. What’s the babies’ mental process of laughing from age 2 to 5? A. They feel amazed, understand and laugh. B. They feel harmless, hesitate and laugh. C. They hesitate, feel frightened and laugh. D. They understand, feel shocked and laugh. 14. Why does the author mention the father and the brother in paragraph 4? A. To give examples. B. To provide methods. C. To make comparisons. D. To offer suggestions. 15. What does the underlined word “hinders” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Forms. B. Deepens. C. Reflects. D. Prevents. Our phones hold our memories, music, movies, and more, which is why we take great care to keep them damage-free. ___16___ When water is involved, even a few drops can seriously damage your phone. It was the great Christmas shopping time. I asked my son and daughter to go together, but they preferred to play at home. People were busy buying gifts for their beloved ones. It seemed that the bigger the gifts were the better they would be. I shook my head sadly and walked on. I was shopping alone trying to pick up some thick winter socks to warm my frozen feet. As I rounded the corner in the store I saw a Christmas tree full of paper angels (天使). On each angel was the name of a needy child whose family couldn’t afford to buy them a gift that year. Shoppers who picked an angel could buy a simple toy or gift. The store would wrap it and send it to the child that Christmas. Around the tree I saw a teenage boy and girl picking out several angels. Their mother was smiling while she watched them. I walked up next to her and started talking with her. She told me that her children started this several years ago when she first explained to them what the Charity Angel tree was for. Each offered to give up one of their toys that year so that a needy child could have one. It didn’t stop then, though. But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn't even on the waitlist. That's when the teacher asked for a volunteer to hand in the first workshop story. Silence covered the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before. 4. The Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in Pu’er was named as a World Heritage Site, becoming China’s 57th entry on the list. 8. What is Jingmai famous for in planting Pu’er Tea? A. A larger production. B. The advanced technology. C. Its transport system. D. Its unique planting method. 9. What can we learn about the “under-story” method from the text? A. It is widely used in China. B. It was invented by Nan Kang. C. It follows the laws of nature. D. It makes sure to produce more tea. 10. What was tea firstly used as by Nan Kang’s ancestors? A. Medical treatment. B. Gifts for friends. C. Main food. D. A kind of nice drink. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. The Export of Pu’er Tea B. A Tea Planting Tradition to Treasure C. The Modern Plantations of Pu’er Tea D. The Tea-drinking Habit of Blang People 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段中“However, being cut off from the outside by rivers, this mountainous area has become a perfect place for an ancient planting technique, growing too trees under forest, known as the “under-story” method, which filters (过滤) sunshine while ensuring water.(然而,由于河流与外界隔绝,这个山区已经成为一种古老种植技术的理想之地,这种技术被称为“下层”方法,可以在过滤阳光的同时保证水分。)” 根据第三段中“Compared to modern plantations, we’ll surely produce less tea in the ancient forest. But we have to respect our tradition and belief. Birds eat insects to protect the tea and the fallen leaves from trees provide fertilizer. Everything improves the other, but also limits each other. It is the way of nature.(与现代种植园相比,我们在古老森林里生产的茶叶肯定会少一些。 根据第四段中“It is believed that Pa Aileng found that tea leaves made his people recover from diseases they suffered from during their moving to other places, so the hero is also considered as a “tea ancestor”. (人们认为,Pa Aileng发现茶叶可以使他的人民在迁移到其他地方时所患的疾病得以康复,所以这位英雄也被认为是“茶祖”。)”可知,Pa Aileng发现茶叶使他的人民从他们在迁移到其他地方时所患的疾病中恢复过来,因此这位英雄也被视为“茶祖”。因此Nan Kang的祖先最初将茶叶用作医疗治疗。故选A。 根据第一段“Pu’er is the home of the world-known tea of the same name. Since other tea-growing centers in Pu’er may have a larger output, more famous brands and heritage surrounding the history of the Tea-horse Ancient Road, Jingmai, also in Pu’er, nay not be people’s first choice to look for the best Pu’er Tea.(普洱茶是世界著名的普洱茶之乡。 B。 D Children do not laugh for joy. A. Forms. B. Deepens. C. Reflects. D. Prevents. C 13. A 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“Laughter begins soon after birth. Babies learn to laugh because they want to copy their parents expressions, and to receive attention and praise from them.(笑声在出生后不久就开始了。婴儿学会笑是因为他们想模仿父母的表情,并得到父母的关注和称赞)”可知,婴儿出生后不久就会笑是因为他们在学习父母的行为。故选C。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Once they begin to behave on their own — from age 2 to 5 — they begin to feel something new for the first time: certain things may seem cold, strange, or out of place, and this shocks, confuses and amazes them. This is where laughter comes in: after a moment of hesitation, they understand that what seemed frightening or unexpected is actually harmless.(一旦他们开始独立行动(从 2 岁到 5 岁),他们就会开始第一次感受到一些新事物:某些事物可能看起来很冷、很奇怪或不合时宜,这让他们感到震惊、困惑和惊讶。这就是笑声的来源:经过片刻的犹豫,他们明白那些看似可怕或出乎意料的事情实际上是无害的)”可知,2岁至5岁婴儿在第一次感受到一些新事物时会惊讶,接着他们会明白那些看似可怕或出乎意料的事情实际上是无害的,然后他们会大笑。由此可知,2岁至5岁婴儿笑的心理过程是:惊奇、理解并大笑。故选A。 根据第四段“For instance, a child laughs when they see their father with a funny clown nose. Why? Because for a second they felt embarrassed: that nose is not a “live” nose. When they understand it was just dad’s joke, they calm down and laugh. They may also laugh when their older brother makes a silly face, and the process is the same.(例如,当孩子看到父亲的滑稽小丑鼻子时,他们会笑。为什么?因为他们一瞬间感到尴尬:那鼻子不是“活”鼻子。当他们明白那只是爸爸的玩笑时,他们会冷静下来,笑起来。当他们的哥哥做鬼脸时,他们也可能会笑,过程是一样的)”可推知,第四段在举例子解释2岁至5岁婴儿笑的心理过程,故选A。 【15题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“From age 5 or 6 and up, children learn to handle abstract (抽象的) ideas, meaning they can grasp and “get” jokes. Our phones hold our memories, music, movies, and more, which is why we take great care to keep them damage-free. ___16___ When water is involved, even a few drops can seriously damage your phone. If you’ve dropped your phone in water, what do you do? Don’t be scared. It’s easy to get into fear, not knowing what to do, when we think we’ve destroyed our phone by dropping it in water. But many newer smartphones are waterproof (防水的). That may reduce many concerns about accidental drops. ___17___ As soon as you realize your phone has fallen in water, fish it out as quickly as possible. Power your phone down. The most important thing to do to fix a phone that got water in it is to dry it off as quickly as possible and don’t turn it on under any condition. ___18___ Remember running any electrical charge through a wet electrical circuit (电路) will certainly cause problems, because water is well-known for being able to send charges between points on the circuit that can't deal with it. ___19___ There are a number of ways you could have gotten a wet cell phone, but one of the most common — and most unclean — is dropping your phone into your toilet. Once the worst has happened, your should clean it. It is important to clean it thoroughly after making sure it’s powered off. Disinfecting wipes (消毒湿巾) should do the trick, or you can use an alcohol-based cleaner applied to a cloth. You mustn’t use pure alcohol or apply any other household cleaning materials directly to your phone. ___20___ A. Clean your wet phone. B. Air out your wet phone. C. But sometimes, accidents do happen. D. That could cause additional harm to your device. E. If it’s still on, turn it off immediately and leave it off. F. Drying out a phone is pretty easy, but it does take a bit of time. G. However, any device will be damaged if left underwater too long. 【答案】16 C 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 根据空前“Our phones hold our memories, music, movies, and more, which is why we take great care to keep them damage-free.(我们的手机保存着我们的记忆、音乐、电影等等,这就是为什么我们非常小心地保持它们不受损坏的原因。)”可知我们非常小心地保持手机不受损坏的原因是因为手机保存着我们的记忆、音乐、电影等等,根据空后“When water is involved, even a few drops can seriously damage your phone. If you’ve dropped your phone in water, what do you do?(当涉及到水时,即使是几滴也会严重损坏你的手机。如果你把手机掉进水里,你会怎么做?)”可知如果手机上弄上水即使是几滴后果也很严重,空处承上启下,所以空出应该指出即使是我们精心保护,有时意外也会发生,C项But sometimes, accidents do happen.(有时意外确实会发生。) 【17题详解】 根据空前“But many newer smartphones are waterproof (防水的). That may reduce many concerns about accidental drops.(但是许多新款智能手机都是防水的。这可能会减少人们对意外发生的担忧。)”可知因为许多新款智能手机大多具有防水的特点,所以即使是掉入水中也不必太过于担心,根据空后“As soon as you realize your phone has fallen in water, fish it out as quickly as possible.(一旦你意识到你的手机掉进水里,尽快把它捞出来。)” However, any device will be damaged if left underwater too long.(然而,如果在水下停留太久,任何设备都会损坏。) 18题详解】 根据空前“The most important thing to do to fix a phone that got water in it is to dry it off as quickly as possible and don’t turn it on under any condition.(要修理进水的手机,最重要的是尽快把手机擦干,在任何情况下都不要开机。)” If it’s still on, turn it off immediately and leave it off.(如果它仍然开着,立即关闭它,让它关闭。) 根据空后“There are a number of ways you could have gotten a wet cell phone, but one of the most common—and most unclean—is dropping your phone into your toilet. Once the worst has happened, your should clean it.(弄湿手机的方法有很多种,但最常见也是最不干净的一种就是把手机掉进马桶里。一旦最坏的情况发生了,你应该清理它。)”可知本段主要与清洗掉进马桶的手机有关,所以小标题应该是清洗手机,选项A Clean your wet phone.(清洗湿了的手机。) 故选A项。 根据空前“It is important to clean it thoroughly after making sure it’s powered off. Disinfecting wipes (消毒湿巾) should do the trick, or you can use an alcohol-based cleaner applied to a cloth. You mustn’t use pure alcohol or apply any other household cleaning materials directly to your phone.(重要的是要彻底清洁后,确保它的电源关闭。消毒湿巾就可以了,或者你也可以用酒精清洁剂擦拭抹布。您不能使用纯酒精或将任何其他家用清洁材料直接涂抹在手机上。)”指出要使用消毒湿巾进行彻底清洁,但不能将纯酒精或将任何其他家用清洁材料直接涂在手机上,所以空处指出为什么不能直接将纯酒精或将任何其他家用清洁材料涂在手机上的原因,D项That could cause additional harm to your device.(这可能会对您的设备造成额外的伤害。)指出不能直接使用纯酒精或将任何其他家用清洁材料的原因,而且D项中的That指代空前的use pure alcohol or apply any other household cleaning materials directly to your phone. At only 9 years old, Miyu Ananthamaya Pranoto is showing other girls of her age that they can achieve so much more than they may ___21___ . I asked my son and daughter to go together, but they preferred to play at home. People were busy buying gifts for their beloved ones It seemed that the bigger the gifts were the better they would be. Each year since the kids had saved money they earned throughout the year and bought more and more children the gifts they wouldn’t have otherwise. It had become a family tradition. I smiled when she finished, and walked over to the tree. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Waving to the two happy children, I left the store, planning what to do next Christmas. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I smiled when she finished, and walked over to the tree. Feeling eager and excited, I reached for the paper angels. “Who will be the child?” I whispered. “In spite of my struggle, I would like to offer her a simple Christmas gift.” At this time, the teenage boy and girl whose mother I talked with just now approached me, showing me their gifts which were wrapped by the store, broad smiles on their faces. Definitely, their virtue really made a big difference to me. I really admired them for their being so caring and kind to help needy children. After a while, we said goodbye with a hug. Waving to the two happy children, I left the store, planning what to do next Christmas. On my arrival at my home, I was greeted by my son and daughter. As soon as I sat down, I poured out the Charity Angle tree to them in detail. What’s more, I explained to them the gift that I chose. After listening with great interest, they shouted, “From now on, we will save money and buy gifts for more children”. We agreed to make it a family tradition at the Christmas shopping time every year. Obviously, it was small acts of kindness that add up, which is significant to our society. 伸手去拿:reach for/reach out for ②.提供某人某物:offer sb sth/provide sb with sth ③.大声说:shout/exclaim 情绪类 ①.赞赏:admire/appreciate ②.兴奋的:excited/thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1] At this time, the teenage boy and girl whose mother I talked with just now approached me, showing me their gifts which were wrapped by the store, broad smiles on their faces.
